Jon Steiner ’63 Jon Steiner is a retired educator, humanitarian, photographer and adventure traveler. Steiner’s B.A. in French from Willamette University included a year of study at the Sorbonne. He earned an M.A. in French literature from the University of Kansas, and was granted a Fulbright Exchange to Morocco.

Throughout his 40 years of teaching, Steiner instilled a sense of appreciation for other cultures in his students both in the classroom and through numerous homestay exchanges in France. He founded Echanges France Amerique du Nord in order to facilitate travel and exchanges for his colleagues nationwide. Steiner served as advisor to the Willamette chapter of Beta Theta Pi for many years and was named director of volunteer development at the fraternity’s administrative office in Ohio. In retirement, backpacking and backroad travel around the world led Steiner to lifechanging encounters and humanitarian opportunities. Meeting impoverished students with seemingly impossible dreams, he acted to help them realize their potential. When his personal resources were insufficient, he formed a nonprofit, Water and Education Care International. In addition

to supporting secondary and university students, WE Care now plans community water projects in western Kenya, where drought and contaminated water often lead to outbreaks of cholera and typhoid.

Kara and Brandon met at Willamette through their community of friends, love for the outdoors, and work as resident assistants. Immediately after Willamette

In 2010, they returned to Seattle and were married. Brandon is a video producer for All of Kidz, a company that creates educational theater performances for elementary school students nationwide. To deliver more socially conscious educational programs, he often introduces topics of race and gender for deeper critical reflection. Kara serves as director of community engagement at the University of Washington Bothell, leading the institution to more proficiently educate students, engage faculty and deepen community impact through community-based learning and research. Kara rigorously engages in her development as a leader and

strives to develop leadership in others. Ardent fans of the Northwest, Brandon and Kara appreciate deep friendships with other Willamette alums in the area. They credit Willamette friends, faculty, staff and community for having helped shape their lives and outlook.

Colby R. Takeda ’11 In 2015, Colby Takeda became one of the nation’s youngest administrators when he opened The Plaza at Waikiki, an assisted living community in Honolulu, Hawaii. He has

since become a champion for intergenerational relationships. Takeda co-authored “It’s Just Aging,” which received the Book Award for Best Children’s Literature on Aging, and is an Argentum Senior Living Leader Under 40 and a Pacific Business News 40 Under 40 awardee. Following his exercise science studies at Willamette, Takeda received an M.B.A. from the University of Hawaii, and is currently a Master of Public Health candidate at the University of California, Berkeley. Reuniting While Giving Back As you join your classmates to mark a post-collegiate milestone, we hope you will be inspired to support the Willamette Annual Fund. Your gift to the annual fund will support the areas of greatest need, including scholarship support. While a student, you enjoyed an experience provided, in part, by those who came before you. Now, we ask you, as an alum, to continue the tradition of giving back by providing today’s scholars access to an exceptional Willamette education. Another wonderful way to honor your reunion milestone and form a lasting legacy is through the creation of a bequest, annuity or trust. If you have already included Willamette in your estate plans, please let us know so that we may welcome you as a member of the R.A. Booth Society.
