Douglas E. Goe JD’81

Partner, Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliff LLP

In addition to being the partner-incharge in Orrick’s Portland office, Douglas Goe is the vice chair for the firm’s Public Finance Department in the Pacific Northwest. Doug focuses on public finance and municipal bond law including federal, state, and tribal tax and securities law issues.

Doug is the bond counsel for the Oregon University System and Oregon Health and Science University and About the award This award is presented for demonstrated leadership, integrity and a sense of civic responsibility to the state and to fellow Oregonians in the advancement of entrepreneurial ideals and values.

The award is presented on an annual basis to an individual in business or government who has shown leadership in

serves as the primary lead bond counsel for the Oregon Facilities Authority on higher education, hospital, and other conduit 501(c)(3) revenue bond issues.

He has served as bond counsel or underwriter's counsel to conduit revenue bond issuers in nine states and on nonprofit Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) bond financings in California, Florida, Oregon, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin. In December 2012, Doug helped design and served as underwriter's counsel on three series of revenue bonds which helped restructure more than $100 million of nonprofit debt for a CCRC located in Seattle, Washington. improving existing conditions, has worked to promote the values of entrepreneurship (innovation, creativity, productivity, quality of life), and has demonstrated action. The Glenn L. Jackson Leadership Award is in recognition of achievement by a leader who recognizes the importance of public-private partnerships and works to provide leadership in both sectors.

Commencement Speaker Jonathan O. Mayes, Esq. JD’87 Senior Vice President of External Affairs & Chief Diversity Officer, Albertsons Companies

Jonathan has received numerous awards, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Service Award from Willamette University, Alumnus of the Year at Warner Pacific College, and was honored by the Bay Area Minority Bar Coalition and the Charles Houston Bar Association. He’s a Certified Diversity Executive and speaks to audiences across the U.S. on topics such as diversity, equity and inclusion.

Jonathan is a professional musician, arranger, vocalist and band leader. He also is an accomplished endurance athlete, having participated in Ironman triathlons, ultramarathons, and over 70 marathons.

Jonathan Mayes is Senior Vice President of External Affairs & Chief Diversity Officer for Albertsons Companies, which employs over 270,000 associates and operates 2,300 stores across 38 states. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science from Warner Pacific College, in Portland, Oregon. He received a Juris Doctorate degree from Willamette University College of Law where he served as Vice-Chairman of the Moot Court Board and was inducted into the Order of the Barristers. Jonathan began his legal career at a California firm before becoming Senior

Counsel at Lucky Stores in 1991 and Senior Counsel at Safeway Inc. in 1994. He previously was Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Government Relations, Sustainability & Philanthropy, before being named to his current role in March 2017.

Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient Dame Susan Jocelyn Bell Burnell

Honorary Doctor of Science Dame Susan Jocelyn Bell Burnell is an astrophysicist from Northern Ireland who, as a postgraduate student, co-discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967, which is noted as “one of the most significant scientific achievements of the 20th century.” The discovery was recognized by the award of the 1974 Nobel Prize in Physics, but even though she was the first to observe the pulsars, Bell was excluded from the recipients of the prize. The paper announcing the discovery of pulsars had five authors. Bell’s thesis supervisor, Antony Hewish, was listed first, Bell second. Hewish was awarded the Nobel Prize, along with the astronomer Martin Ryle. Many prominent astronomers criticized Bell’s omission.

She also taught at the Open University (1973–87) and worked at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh (1982–91), before serving as professor of physics at the Open University (1991–2001). Bell Burnell was then appointed dean of science at the University of Bath (2001–04), after which she accepted a post as visiting professor at Oxford.

In September 2018, Bell Burnell was awarded the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. Bell Burnell is donating the entire $3 million prize money to the U.K.’s Institute of Physics to support refugees, minorities, and women in the field, to fight “unconscious bias.”

She has become an advocate for women and diversity in science.

She became the first female president of the Institute of Physics (IoP) in 2008 and went on to become the first female president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2014. In 2012, she chaired a working group for the Royal Society of Edinburgh whose goal was to increase the number of women in science, technology, and mathematics in Scotland.

Outside of Deloitte, Punit is a member of the boards of directors at United Way Worldwide, U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum and Japan Society. He was named an honoree to the 2012, 2013 and 2014 National Association of Corporate Directors “Directorship 100.”

Academic Regalia The style of academic regalia most commonly worn in the United States dates back to colonial times, although it was not formally adopted until near the end of the 19th century, when it was chosen as appropriate attire by the Intercollegiate Commission. It has remained the general standard in America since, although some variations occur at individual institutions.

The gown The gown has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, because it covers any dress of rank or social standing. In the United States, black is the traditional color for academic gowns, although some institutions allow holders of doctoral degrees to wear robes in the university’s colors. Gowns have pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree, long closed sleeves with a slit in the arm or wrist for the master’s degree, and full bell double sleeves for the doctor’s degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctor’s degree, the gown is often faced down the front with velvet, with

three bars of velvet across the sleeves usually in black or of a color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains.

The cap When Roman law freed a slave, it accorded the privilege of wearing a cap. And so the academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. The cap of scholarship is square to symbolize the book. The color of the tassel denotes the discipline.

The hood The hood is trimmed with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining designates the university or college from which the degree was granted.

Willamette University President Stephen E. Thorsett was raised in Salem. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics, summa cum laude, from Carleton College and his doctoral degree in physics from Princeton University. As an astrophysicist, he helped develop two of NASA’s orbiting telescopes, and he and his team discovered the oldest known planet, called Methuselah. He has held research and teaching positions at Caltech, Princeton and the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was dean of the science

division and founder of their California Teach program for training new math and science teachers.

Since 2011, Thorsett has been the president of Willamette University, where as a teenager he worked in the dishroom. At Willamette, his goals include strengthening the university’s historic connections to Oregon and the Northwest, solidifying its position as a leader in our region for rigorous, high quality undergraduate, management and legal education, and raising the resources needed to provide access to a Willamette education for the most talented high school graduates, regardless of their financial means. Thorsett lives in Salem with his wife, Rachel, also a physicist. Their daughter, Laura, is currently working with a research firm in Washington, D. C.

Sam began his career at Willamette in 1972, served as professor and VP of Academic Affairs, and retired from the James T. Matthews Chair of Mathematics in 2005. A beloved member of the community, he was also active in establishing a course in peace studies, and was a mentor to generations of students and a model of integrity, humor and kindness.

Professor of economics emeritus, Leonard served at Willamette from 1960 until his retirement in 1987.

Paulus was one of Willamette University College of Law’s most prominent graduates and a Willamette life trustee emeritus. A political powerhouse and trailblazer, Paulus advanced women’s rights, education and environmental protection. In 1976, she became the first woman to be elected to statewide office in Oregon as secretary of state.

Professor emerita of English and the first of the rotating associate deans, Bothun is remembered as a devoted and talented teacher who also advanced the cause of women on the faculty.

A United Methodist pastor and professor of sociology, he served as Willamette’s 22nd president from 1974-1980. As president, Lisensky led the university through formative changes, particularly related to campus facilities and grounds, including opening the doors of the new Graduate School of Administration, now known as the Atkinson Graduate School of Management.

Swindells was a Willamette University trustee from 1971 until 2001 when he became a Life Trustee. In his capacity as board chair from 1987 to 1995, he oversaw the sesquicentennial campaign, which exceeded its $50-million goal by $12 million. A generous supporter, his commitment to the university is reflected in buildings, scholarships and faculty support.
