Registration opens on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 8 a.m. Here are some tips to make the process go smoothly. Set up your account: Create or update your Willamalane account before registration opens. Log in to manage your family members’ information and edit your saved payment cards. If you’re signing up for youth programs, complete your School Year Pass 23-24 in advance. Find your classes: Browse the Willamalane website and this rec guide to find programs you want. Add them to your “wish list” online to make them easy to find when it’s time to register. Figure out payments and scholarships: Update your payment card information and check expiration dates. Discounts and scholarships are also available for specific Willamalane programs. Find more information about eligibility requirements online. Register: For the best experience, register online using a desktop computer. Most class listings include two prices. The first, labeled ID for in-district, is the price charged to district residents. The second price, labeled OD, is for out-of-district patrons. The price difference reflects the support residents provide in taxes paid to Willamalane. For information on district boundaries, see the map on pages 6–7.

Try new activities, explore the outdoors, and spend time with friends and family. Equipment is available on a first-come, firstserved basis. Parks Parks are more than just beautiful spaces; they provide a sense of belonging and community. With five recreational facilities, 45 parks, and more than 1,500 acres of natural areas you have endless opportunities to be active, connect with nature, and make unforgettable memories in Springfield. Stroll through the historic orchards at Dorris Ranch, or let your dog run free in the off-leash dog park at Lively Park. Try the mountain bike trails at Thurston Hills Natural Area or the skateboard park at Willamalane Park for an adrenaline rush. Created by voters in 1944, Willamalane is a special tax district, located within but separate from the city of Springfield, governed by a fivemember, elected board of directors and managed by an executive director. Willamalane has been nationally recognized as a two-time Gold Medal agency by the National Parks and Recreation Association. In 2022, Willamalane was awarded the prestigious CAPRA accreditation, recognizing its alignment with industry best practices and placing it among the nation’s top-tier park and recreation districts.

Water Fitness CLASSES

AI CHI: Enjoy relaxing movement in the shallow water of the warm pool. Improve your balance, mobility, and range of motion. AQUATONE: Build strength, flexibility, and endurance. This is a moderately-paced, shallow-water workout using low-impact exercises. This class is held in the warm pool. DEEP-WATER EXERCISE: Increase muscle tone, cardiovascular endurance, and range of motion. Flotation equipment supports you in the dive tank for this moderately paced workout. EXERCISE THAT FEELS GOOD: Improve strength, balance, flexibility, and energy. This shallow-water workout is moderately-paced and is kind to your joints. This class is held in the warm pool.

LAP SWIMMING

Willamalane Park Swim Center has an eight-lane, 25-yard lap pool that is 83 degrees and is 5–6 feet deep. Splash! at Lively Park has a six-lane lap pool that is 84 degrees and 4–5 feet deep, and is available for lap swimming and water walking. It has wide stairs with a handrail that facilitate an easy wheelchair transfer. A lift is available for access at both pools.

Private Swim Lessons Private lessons are great for students looking for a more customized swim lesson experience. Options include: • One-on-one private swim lessons • Semi-private lessons • Family private lessons Learn more at willamalane.org/lessons.

HIIT: High-Intensity Interval Training is a cardio-intensive, full-body workout but gentle on the joints. HIIT is held in deep water. HYDRO-FIT®: This aerobic-paced, deep-water class will increase cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and core conditioning.

EXERCISE ON YOUR OWN

Willamalane Park Swim Center offers three different pools for exercise on your own. In addition to the lap pool: • The warm pool is a shallow pool that is gently sloped from 3–5 feet deep and kept at 88 degrees. It has an easy entry ramp and an in-water handrail to provide stability for those needing extra support. This pool is perfect for water walking, exercising, and therapy. • The dive tank is a great environment for deep-water exercise and running. The pool is 83 degrees and offers wide entry stairs for easy access. Splash! at Lively Park has two different pools for exercise on your own. In addition to the lap pool: • The Springfield Utility Board Wave Pool provides a great environment for exercise in 86-degree water. Easily accessible from the beach at zero depth. Group Swim Lessons

LEVEL 4

Students swim with other kids in their level to grow their swim skills over eight-session classes. Classes are available at both pools. Learn more at willamalane.org/lessons.

WATERBABIES AND WATERKIDS

Ages 6–36 months. Instructors teach you how to work with your child in the water and prepare your young swimmer for a lifetime of water fun. Levels progress from beginning to advanced skill development. Swim diapers with elastic legs are required.

PRESCHOOL AGE: LEVEL 1–3 ages 3–4 years

PREREQUISITE: STUDENT CAN PERFORM STREAMLINE FRONT AND BACK FLOATS UNASSISTED WITH KICKS; UNASSISTED FRONT AND BACK GLIDES WITH KICKS; ROLL FROM FRONT TO BACK AND BACK TO FRONT FOR SWIM-ROLL-SWIM.

Students will add arm strokes and kicks to front and back floats, learn to change direction while swimming, and master the swim-roll-swim technique using an elementary backstroke.

LEVEL 5

PREREQUISITE: STUDENT CAN PERFORM FREESTYLE ARM STROKES WITH KICKS FOR 10 YARDS; ELEMENTARY BACKSTROKE WITH KICKS FOR 10 YARDS; AND SWIMROLL-SWIM BETWEEN FREESTYLE ARM STROKES AND ELEMENTARY BACKSTROKE WITH KICKS.

Students will add bilateral breathing to arm strokes, will be introduced to backstroke, and build endurance with kicks.

LEVEL 6

PRESCHOOL 1 NO PREREQUISITE

PREREQUISITE: STUDENT CAN PERFORM FREESTYLE WITH BILATERAL BREATHING AND KICKS FOR 15 YARDS; BACKSTROKE WITH KICKS FOR 15 YARDS IN DEEP WATER.

Students will gain comfort and confidence in the water, practice submersion skills and blowing bubbles, and try assisted floats, kicking, and basic water safety skills.

Students will continue to develop freestyle and backstroke and will be introduced to advanced drills to enhance endurance and technique. Classes are held primarily in deep water.

PRESCHOOL 2

LEVEL 7/8

PREREQUISITE: STUDENT IS COMFORTABLE IN THE WATER; CAN SUBMERGE UNDERWATER WITH BUBBLE BOBS OR JUMPS; CAN PERFORM FRONT AND BACK STARFISH FLOATS WITH ASSISTANCE.

PREREQUISITE: STUDENT CAN SWIM FREESTYLE WITH BI-LATERAL BREATHING AND KICKS FOR 20 YARDS; BACKSTROKE WITH KICKS FOR 20 YARDS WITH GOOD FORM AND CONSISTENCY.

Students will practice submersion, floating, breathing, and kicking skills and learn to perform them independently. Students will continue learning basic water safety skills through drills.

Students will learn the butterfly and breaststroke with new drills and techniques. Students also enhance their freestyle and backstroke.

PRESCHOOL 3

PREREQUISITE: STUDENT CAN PERFORM STARFISH FRONT AND BACK FLOATS UNASSISTED; BEGINNING KICKS WITH FLOATS; CAN JUMP IN, RECOVER FOR AIR, AND GRAB THE WALL.

Students will learn new body positions for floats and kicks, practice independent forward movement using kicks and glides, and learn how to effectively roll from one position to another.

Students will gain comfort and confidence in the water, practice submersion skills and blowing bubbles, and try assisted floats, kicking, and basic water safety skills.

Become a Lifeguard Lifeguards are in high demand at Willamalane! All new Willamalane lifeguards are eligible for a $200 hiring incentive and are also eligible to earn a $100 bonus for every 200 hours worked. Employees can receive up to $500 in retention incentives annually for hours worked. AQUATIC HIRING EVENTS Join the pool squad and find the perfect job! At aquatics hiring events, lifeguard and swim instructor candidates will learn about the position, have a casual interview, and jump in the water. Please bring a swimsuit and towel to the event. Those who are a good fit for the job can receive a preliminary job offer at the event. From there, the new employees undergo necessary training on paid time, with all certifications paid for by the district. Candidates must be at least 15 years old. Connect with select group exercise classes, instructors, and workout buddies without leaving home! With an ALL-ACCESS Membership or a Virtual Fitness Pass, you can join in live classes offered online. Members receive a monthly email with links to class meetings. Check the website for details.

Cardio ACTIVE EXERCISE: Improve your strength, flexibility, and cardio fitness. This class includes standing and floor exercises. Equipment: mat, dumbbells, bands, 9-inch ball. LINE DANCE BASICS: Learn a fun, aerobic social dance with challenging and dynamic choreography. Dance to a wide range of musical genres. BEYOND BASICS LINE DANCE: Step up to the challenge with this intermediate class. Learn tags, restarts, dances in contra, and phrased dances. DANCE FITNESS II AND III: Love your workout with this combination of dance and fitness moves for serious fun. Dance yourself fit to pop, jazz, Latin, jive, Bollywood, and more! Dance Fitness II is a moderate-intensity class. Dance Fitness III is a high-intensity class. DANCE YOUR BONES STRONG: Dance to great music while strengthening your bones using scientifically-proven exercises. Equipment: mat.

HIIT & TONE II AND III: Build cardiovascular fitness and improve endurance with this challenging, full-body workout. HIIT & Tone II is a moderate-intensity class. HIIT & Tone III is a high-intensity class. Equipment: dumbbells, mat. ZUMBA®: Get down, feel great! Let the music free your body. The ultimate dance-fitness party will groove you into shape.

Flexibility & Balance 8 SILKEN BROCADE QI GONG: Balance mind, body, and energy through breath and movement. Based on Chinese Traditional Medicine. No experience necessary. This is a 30-minute class. BALANCE!: Improve your strength and agility in an enjoyable class. This class is all about strengthening your balance, which is an important part of staying independent as you age. Equipment: wear sturdy shoes. CHAIR YOGA: Combine traditional Hatha Yoga chair postures with some supported, standing poses for better breathing, stretching, and flexibility. FLEX & STRETCH WITH BANDS: This class uses bands of different resistances to enhance stretching, flexibility, and joint mobility and to promote relaxation and improved range of motion. Suitable for all levels. Equipment: bands, mat. GENTLE YOGA: Experience a relaxing yoga that feels good and includes stretching, strength, breathing, and mindfulness. Equipment: mat, towel, or blanket.

FITNESS

YOGA FUSION: This class integrates fast-paced Vinyasa-like yoga sequences with core exercises to provide a cardio and core strength workout. Restorative poses and mindfulness round out the practice so participants feel invigorated and refreshed at the end of class. All levels are welcome. Equipment: yoga mat.
