A Message from the Executive Director This season, I’m filled with gratitude. Thank you to everyone who participated in the May primary election.

The Willamalane Local Option Levy narrowly passed, and this additional funding will help us continue to provide exceptional park and recreation service.

Willamalane is committed to being good stewards of your tax dollars but not reliant on serial requests for future tax increases. Through partnerships, district reorganization, existing and new revenue streams, and the generous support of the Willamalane Park Foundation, the district’s financial outlook is bright. Willamalane is creating opportunities and efficiencies to support a long-term strong financial strategy. Our five-year financial plan is still underway, and we’ll provide regular updates at willamalane.org/transparency.

We’re carrying this tremendous momentum and gratitude into our programming and strategic plans as we approach Over the past year, Willamalane has been recognized as best-in-class, earning honors ranging from the Springfield one of the most special seasons at Willamalane! This fall, Area Chamber of Commerce’s Employer of the Year award your favorites will be back: Kids Club, preschool, youth sports, swim lessons, and trips. You’ll see more adaptive to being named one of only four finalists for the National and inclusive recreation programming (page 22), changes Gold Medal Award. The Gold Medal Award is widely to our Halloween events to make them more accessible considered the highest honor in the parks and recreation and inclusive (page 8), and expanded youth programming profession, recognizing excellence in park management, to meet the needs of our community (pages 15-20). programming, conservation, and community impact.

These recognitions reflect the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and community partners and inspire us to continue doing what we love most, enriching the lives of everyone we serve.

District Info Delivering exceptional parks and recreation to enrich the lives of everyone we serve.

Willamalane Park and Recreation District maintains and operates recreation facilities, community centers, pools, parks, trails, and natural areas in Springfield.

Created by voters in 1944, Willamalane is a special tax district, separate from the City of Springfield, governed by a five-member, elected board of directors and managed by an executive director. In 2022, Willamalane earned CAPRA accreditation, which signifies that the organization’s overall quality of operations, management, and service to the community are aligned with industry best practices.

In 2026, Willamalane was named as a finalist for the 2026 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management, widely considered the highest honor in the industry.

Inclusion Services Willamalane proactively works to foster welcoming parks, facilities, and programs, so that all of our community members and staff have access to the same opportunities and feel a genuine sense of belonging.

Pools Splash at Lively Park

Nestled in the Thurston area of Springfield next to Lively Park, the indoor waterpark offers something for everyone. Enjoy a wave pool, kiddie pool, water slide, lap pool, steaming spa pool, community room, and outdoor sun deck. The waves are activated during waterpark swim times only.

DETAILS:

Wave Pool: The Springfield Utility Board Wave Pool is set at 86 degrees and is easily accessible from the beach at zero depth. Waves are on during waterpark swims only.

Lap Pool: This six-lane, 25-yard lap pool is kept at 84 degrees and is 4-5 feet deep. It is available for lap swimming and water jogging. It has wide stairs with a handrail that facilitate an easy wheelchair transfer, and a lift is available. Find open exercise times online or at the front desk.

Willamalane Park Swim Center is Springfield’s central indoor pool, catering to swimmers of all ages and abilities. Enjoy a variety of amenities, including a steaming spa pool, fitness center, diving board, and large water slide that is open during recreation swims.

DETAILS:

Lap Pool: This eight-lane, 25-yard lap pool is kept at 83 degrees and is 5-6 feet deep. It is available for lap swimming and water jogging. A lift is available. Find open lap swim times online or at the front desk.

Warm Pool: This shallow pool is gently sloped from 3–5 feet deep and kept at 88 degrees. With an easy entry ramp and an in-water handrail, it is ideal for water walking, exercising, and therapy. Find open exercise times online or at the front desk.

Dive Tank: This pool is kept at 83 degrees and is great for deepwater exercise and running. There are wide entry stairs for easy access. Find open exercise times online or at the front desk.

Swim Lessons Students swim with other kids in their level to grow their swim skills. Classes are available at both pools. Learn more and see prices at willamalane.org/lessons.

WaterBabies and WaterKids ages 6–36 months Instructors teach you how to work with your child in the water and prepare your young swimmer for a lifetime of water fun.

Levels progress from beginning to advanced skill development.

Swim diapers with elastic legs are required.

LEVEL 3

Prerequisite: Student can perform front and back starfish floats unassisted; beginning kicks with floats; can jump in, recover for air.

Students learn new body positions for floats and kicks, practice independent forward movement using kicks and glides, and learn how to effectively roll from one position to another.

LEVEL 4

Prerequisite: Student can perform front and back floats unassisted with kicks and unassisted front and back glides with kicks.

Preschool Age: Levels 1–4 ages 3–4 years

Students build on foundational swimming skills by combining arm strokes with strong kicks and practicing arm strokes and elementary backstroke while learning to change direction and return to the wall.

No prerequisite

Students gain comfort and confidence in the water, practice submersion skills and blowing bubbles, and try assisted floats, kicking, and basic water safety skills.

PRESCHOOL 2

Prerequisite: Student is comfortable in the water; can submerge underwater with bubble bobs or jumps; can perform front and back starfish floats with assistance.

Students practice submersion, floating, breathing, and kicking skills and learn to perform them independently. Students will continue learning basic water safety skills through drills.

PRESCHOOL 3

Prerequisite: Student can perform front and back starfish floats unassisted; beginning kicks with floats; can jump in, recover for air.

Students learn new body positions for floats and kicks, practice independent forward movement using kicks and glides, and learn how to effectively roll from one position to another.

PRESCHOOL 4

Prerequisite: Student can perform front and back floats unassisted with kicks and unassisted front and back glides with kicks.

Students build on foundational swimming skills by combining arm strokes with strong kicks and practicing freestyle and elementary backstroke while learning to change direction and return to the wall.

School Age: Levels 1–9 ages 5–12 years LEVEL 1

No prerequisite

Prerequisite: Student can perform arm strokes with kicks, elementary backstroke with kicks, and change direction to return to the wall.

Students improve coordination and smooth transitions between swimming positions, practice rolling from front to back, and strengthen swim-roll-swim skills using arm strokes and elementary backstroke.

LEVEL 6

Prerequisite: Student can perform freestyle arm strokes with kicks for 10 yards; elementary backstroke with kicks for 10 yards; and swim-roll-swim between freestyle arm strokes and elementary backstroke with kicks.

Students add bilateral breathing to arm strokes, are introduced to backstroke, and build endurance with kicks. Classes are held in shallow and deep water.

LEVEL 7

Prerequisite: Student can perform freestyle with bilateral breathing and kicks for 15 yards; backstroke with kicks for 15 yards in deep water.

Students continue developing freestyle and backstroke and are introduced to advanced drills to enhance endurance and technique. Classes are held primarily in deep water.

LEVEL 8

Prerequisite: Student can swim freestyle with bilateral breathing and kicks for 20 yards and swim backstroke with kicks for 20 yards with good form and consistency.

Students learn butterfly and breaststroke using new drills and techniques in deep water.

LEVEL 9

Prerequisite: Student can swim freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke with good form and consistency.

Students gain comfort and confidence in the water, practice submersion skills and blowing bubbles, and try assisted floats, kicking, and basic water safety skills.

Students refine all four strokes and learn advanced skills, including flip turns, open turns, and dives (dives taught at Willamalane Park Swim Center only).

LEVEL 2

Private Lessons ages 3+

Prerequisite: Student is comfortable in the water; can submerge underwater with bubble bobs or jumps; can perform front and back starfish floats with assistance.

Students practice submersion, floating, breathing, and kicking skills and learn to perform them independently. Students will continue learning basic water safety skills through drills.

Equipped with a variety of weightlifting and cardio machines, this fitness center is ideal for independent workouts at your own pace. Open during regular hours of operation at Bob Keefer Center.

Willamalane’s fitness classes are taught by experienced, compassionate instructors. Land-based classes are 50–55 minutes unless otherwise noted. Water fitness classes are 45 minutes. Most classes are light to moderate intensity with modifications available. Students 14-17 years old must have a parent or guardian present.

CLIMB TIME

AGES 3+. Enjoy an evening of self-led climbing adventures.

Choices of ropes and auto belays make it easy for new climbers to navigate the wall and experienced climbers to find a new challenge. GRADES 4-5. Elementary School Sports is a fun and welcoming sports program for elementary-aged kids, regardless of skill or ability. During the six-week seasons, young athletes build skills, grow confidence, and learn to be part of a team. Coaches will focus on teamwork, communication, and good conduct while introducing the fundamentals of sports in a supportive, recreational environment. Teams practice on Mondays and Wednesdays at their elementary schools. Participants will wear a team jersey to represent their school during games, played on Thursday evenings at Bob Keefer Center. SKIN CANCER SCREENING

AGES 50+. Are you concerned about a suspicious mole, bump,

or skin discoloration? A dermatologist is available for a skin check. These five-minute appointments are ideal for evaluating specific areas of concern but unsuitable for consultations on chronic skin conditions. Please ensure that the spots you wish to have examined are easily accessible, as participants will not be able to disrobe. Space is limited. Register by Sept. 19.
