Summer registration opens April 17 See page

Registration opens on Wednesday, April 17, at 8 a.m.

Here are some tips to make the process go smoothly.

Set up your account: Create or update your Willamalane account before registration opens. Log in to manage your family members’ information and edit your saved payment cards. If you’re signing up for summer camp, complete your 2024 Camp Prerequisites in advance.

Find your classes: Browse the Willamalane website and this rec guide to find programs you want. Add them to your “wish list” online to make them easy to find when it’s time to register. The “all activities” page on the new website lists the classes in the same order as this guide, so they’re easy to find!

Figure out payments and scholarships: Update your payment card information and check expiration dates. Discounts and scholarships are also available for specific Willamalane programs. Find more information about eligibility requirements online.

Register: Please note that registration for summer camps is only available online or in person.

For more information and helpful tips, visit willamalane.org/register

Are You In-District?

Most class listings include two prices. The first, labeled ID for in-district, is the price charged to district residents. The second price, labeled OD, is for those out-ofdistrict. The price difference reflects the support residents provide in taxes paid to Willamalane. For information on district boundaries, see the map on pages 6–7.

Fees and Refunds

Fees are due when you register. Refunds must be requested at least three working days prior to the start of an activity.

Land Acknowledgment

This land acknowledgment is to bring awareness to the first peoples of this land we call home. It is important to understand the history that has brought us to reside on the land and to seek to understand our place in that history.

We are located on Kalapuya Ilihi, the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. The Kalapuya people were dispossessed of their indigenous homelands following the treaties between 1851 and 1855. Then the Kalapuya people were forcibly removed to the Grand Ronde Reservation west of Salem. Today, Kalapuya descendants are primarily citizens of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, they continue to make important contributions to their communities, our local community, the state of Oregon, and the world. We recognize these lands and waters and their significance for the Kalapuya people who lived and continue to live in this region.

We also express our respect to the many tribes that have ancestral connections to this land, and all Indigenous people who call this land their home.

This acknowledgment was adopted by the Willamalane Board of Directors on October 11, 2023.

Welcome to the new willamalane.org

Explore new features, including easier registration on any device.

Willamalane has a new website! Now you can explore easier registration, better mobile access, and new accessibility features. Last year, Willamalane conducted community and staff surveys, interviews, and assessments to inform the building of the new website. With this information, Willamalane focused on building a site that would work on your phone, integrate more seamlessly with Willamalane’s registration software, ActiveNet, improve key accessibility features, be easier to navigate, and allow for more timely improvements in the future. The new site achieves many of these goals, and more improvements will come soon.

More highlights include:

• Mobile access: The site is built and optimized for all devices.

• Viewing programs: You can browse a list of programs on the activities page. They are listed in the same order as this rec guide, making it easier to find what you want in the rec guide and on the website.

• Search: A search icon allows you to easily find what you need anywhere on the site, including program names you find in the rec guide.

• Translation feature: Click the globe icon and select “Español” to translate all website content into Spanish.

• Font sizes: Increase or decrease the font size using the three “A”s in the top bar. This feature is available on larger screen sizes.

• Park and facility pages: Search by name, filter by amenity, or hover over the park or map to learn more. Click a place for more details about amenities, addresses, detailed hours, and more.

• Finding schedules: You can find links to the court, swim center, and fitness class schedules on the main menu.

VIEWING PROGRAMS

Nothing has changed about Willamalane’s registration software, ActiveNet, or your account, but finding the programs you want should be much easier.

On most activity pages, you can see the activity’s name, location, days of the week, times, dates, ages, the number of spots available in the program, and a link to register or see more information if registration is full. The purple bar above the activity listing provides filtering options. You can use the search bar to filter by name, select the days of the week you are available (M-Su), type the participant’s age, or select “only open” to only show programs with available spots.

If you click the activity title, “Register,” or “Full. See details” links, a new browser tab will open. You will go straight to the activity in Willamalane’s registration system, ActiveNet. You can select “enroll” or the heart icon to add the program to your wishlist. Find more registration tips online!

FEEDBACK

Your feedback will help inform future improvements to the website. If you have any feedback about the new website or questions, please contact us online, send us your questions on social media, stop by the front desk, or call 541-736-4544.

GET READY, SPRINGFIELD — another fantastic year is ahead! Our recreation guide gives you a sneak peek at all the fun activities and events that are waiting for you. This annual report gives you a quick snapshot of 2023.

You’ll find photos and stories about significant projects Willamalane accomplished last year. Your continued trust and support allow us to bring our vision of “A healthy, active community where everyone belongs” to life. On page 30, you can find the most recent financial report to see how your tax dollars were invested in parks and recreation in Springfield.

This year, I encourage you to try something new, along with all of your favorite Willamalane parks and programs. Browse the rec guide to find what’s best for you and your family, or visit the brand-new willamalane.org. Let’s make 2024 one to remember while having fun and staying active! Financial Report FISCAL YEAR 2022–23

Willamalane is designated as a special tax district, which means the community members who live within district boundaries pay a unique tax that goes specifically to parks and recreation.

Willamalane is incredibly grateful to our community for entrusting the organization to be stewards of your tax dollars. Additional revenue supports maintaining parks and facilities and operating hundreds of programs. This revenue includes things like program and admission fees, grants, and sponsorships. Every dollar generated gets reinvested into our community and allows Willamalane to do more for Springfield.

The district operates on a fiscal year, so this financial report represents the last full fiscal year from July 1, 2022–June 30, 2023.

Note: These numbers have been confirmed by an outside auditor.

JANUARY

Woodland Wednesdays are monthly volunteer events to promote the health of natural areas. Hard-working volunteers removed English ivy, an invasive species, from over 300 trees at Eastgate Woodlands/Whilamut Natural Area! This incredible effort helps save trees in the riparian zone that protect habitat, water quality, and recreation areas.

2023 SPOTLIGHT: Volunteers

Last year, Willamalane volunteers dedicated their time to support Willamalane in many unique ways, from removing invasive species in parks to making events run smoothly.

The annual Health and Fitness Expo at Willamalane Adult Activity Center showcases hundreds of classes and programs offered by Willamalane that enhance your overall well-being. At the free event, attendees got to sample different classes and find new ways to move their bodies in healthy and fulfilling ways.

MAY

Willamalane staff, volunteers, and fellow gardeners grew more than 1,000 lbs of fresh produce at Thurston Community Garden for Willamalane’s food pantry in 2023! The food pantry also saw thousands more pounds from donation bins at summer events and Willamalane food drives in May and September.

2023 SPOTLIGHT: Park and Trail Upgrades

Throughout the summer, Willamalane parks and trails saw improvements in accessibility, access, and new amenities. This work is thanks to hardworking staff and volunteers who help make places throughout the district more welcoming and accessible for all.

The pickleball courts at Meadow Park were resurfaced with smooth, vibrant lines, so you’ll easily be able to tell if your opponent’s serve was out-of-bounds. This grant-funded project helped make the courts safer and more accessible for all to play pickleball.

JUNE

The 1Pass was extraordinarily popular in 2023 — that may be the understatement of the year. We learned a lot from this process and have worked to reimagine the sales process and improve your experience in 2024. Last year, Springfield Public Schools generously covered the cost of 4,000 cards for SPS students, and more kids than ever had access to fun destinations across Eugene and Springfield. Kids used their 1Pass cards to do something active more than 72,000 times!

On a sunny Saturday in June, more than 2,000 people visited Island Park to explore over 50 booths, enjoy live entertainment, play fun games, and meet furry friends.

2023 SPOTLIGHT: Summer Camps

Kids ages 3-13 enjoyed fun days with friends, playing sports, exploring the parks, and learning new things at Willamalane summer camps!

OakHabitat Restoration

We like big oaks, and we cannot lie! Oak prairie and savanna restoration efforts continued at Thurston Hills Natural Area last summer.

Over the past century, fire exclusion has allowed native and non-native vegetation, including conifers, to encroach into oak woodland and prairies. Over time, conifers are able to grow in the shade of the oak, eventually overtopping and outcompeting them for resources and reducing key habitats for wildlife.

To address this degraded habitat condition, Willamalane partners with Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council and Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board to save new and legacy oak trees by thinning out undesirable trees. The result will be a much more open woodland that will allow the Oregon white oak to receive sufficient sunlight to mature with full open-grown canopies.

For the first time since 2020, Willamalane’s afterschool childcare program, Kids Club, returned to all 11 Springfield elementary school sites! This colossal victory required immense collaboration, effort, and program changes. Still, there’s more work to do. Willamalane is committed to serving more families in Springfield.

2023 SPOTLIGHT: Facility Upgrades

Willamalane Park and Recreation District

COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

September 2023

Willamalane’s Board of Directors adopted a new comprehensive plan that strategically outlines the future of Springfield parks, facilities, and recreation programs for the next 20 years. Valuable input from more than 3,800 community members helped shape the plan, ensuring that the facilities and programs will align with the needs and aspirations of the residents. The comprehensive plan aims to positively impact the community by guiding the creation of engaging and inclusive spaces that promote health, well-being, and high quality of life for all district residents.

In 2023, Willamalane facilities get essential repairs, upgrades, and thorough deep cleanings. Highlights include:

• A new roof for Bob Keefer Center

• Fresh paint and new kitchen flooring at Willamalane Adult Activity Center, with a new accessible coffee bar coming soon!

• Improvements to both pools, including a new circulation pump for the warm water pool at Willamalane Park Swim Center

• A fresh coat of paint on the Tomseth House at Dorris Ranch

SEPTEMBER

After-school sports kicked off with the start of the new school year. Like Middle School Sports, After-School All-Stars is now league-based, so fourth and fifth graders can represent their school and get an introduction to recreational sports.

The endangered oak prairie at Dorris Ranch saw some significant improvements this fall during controlled burns. Efforts like these are best practices for land management to help plants grow, remove invasive species, and make the area safer from wildfires. In the spring, Willamalane will plant native seeds and let nature do its thing, turning the prairie into a thriving ecosystem. Thanks to local partners and Willamalane staff for a safe and successful burn!

OCTOBER

Featuring glow-in-the-dark golf balls, 12-foot skeletons playing ping pong, and pumpkin spice-scented fog machines, Ghostly Golf was a hit with kids and adults alike!

On Wednesday, Oct. 12, the Willamalane Board voted unanimously to adopt the Willamalane Land Acknowledgment.

This land acknowledgment was written specifically for Willamalane with the help of Marta Clifford, Grand Ronde elder and an advisor for the district. The goal of this statement is to acknowledge that Willamalane has benefited from the forced removal of the Kalapuya people from their land. As a district, we are responsible for acknowledging this history and stewarding the land in a culturally sensitive manner. It is also important to remember that the Kalapuya people continue to reside here. Willamalane is committed to working with our partners and American Indian/Alaska Native people to best serve everyone in our community.

2023 SPOTLIGHT: Halloween Extravaganza

It was another amazing year for Willama-ween as the community came out to four unique, Halloweenthemed events in Springfield. Festivities kicked-off with Ghostly Golf and Haunted Lagoon with the finale of Haunted Hayride and Halloween Carnival. October was full of laughter, magic, music, and fun!

In October, two kind-hearted community members discovered this owl trapped in fishing line over the river. Thanks to their efforts, the owl was placed in the safe hands of Cascades Raptor Center to be rehabilitated and was released back to its home less than a month later.

2023 SPOTLIGHT: Wildlife in the Parks

Springfield’s parks and natural areas are an oasis for wildlife. Sharing spaces with wildlife comes with the responsibility of keeping your pets on leash, staying alert, and keeping a respectful distance. There’s no need to fear — the presence of wildlife means the land is serving both people and animals alike! These critters are important to maintain a healthy, balanced ecosystem for all to enjoy.

Willamalane and Long Tom Watershed Council, both members of the Urban Waters and Wildlife Partnership, are working to enhance stormwater management throughout our neighborhoods. The first project, located at Bob Keefer Center’s parking lot, highlights this commitment.

Rain gardens like this act as a natural filter, doing a fantastic job of capturing, cleaning, and slowing down stormwater runoff, safeguarding our local waterways, and creating a refuge for plants and wildlife.

4thGradeSwim Lessons 60thAnniversary

For the past six decades, Willamalane and Springfield Public Schools have provided water safety education to over 50,000 students in Willamalane’s fourth-grade swim lessons program. Through the program, all fourth-grade students in SPS elementary schools can participate in free swim lessons as part of the regular school curriculum, which eliminates cost and transportation barriers.

DeFazioTrailSystem Dedication

DECEMBER

In decades past, adult sports leagues were hugely popular in the district. In 2023, Willamalane returned to its roots and launched Willamalane Rec Sports. The re-imagined program’s first season consisted of mixed-gender basketball and volleyball leagues that competed indoors at Bob Keefer Center.

2023 SPOTLIGHT: Trips

Willamalane hosted a dedication ceremony at Thurston Hills Natural Area to recognize and honor Congressman Peter DeFazio’s commitment to community well-being and environmental stewardship. Congressman DeFazio was a pivotal supporter in the acquisition, trail development, wildfire mitigation, and habitat restoration of this beloved natural area.

During the ceremony, Willamalane unveiled a new kiosk at the north trailhead featuring an updated trail map, updated trail descriptions, and the newly dedicated “Peter DeFazio Trail System at Thurston Hills Natural Area.”

Each year, Willamalane travels across Oregon on day and overnight trips led by knowledgeable, well-traveled guides. Highlights in 2023 include:

• An Umpqua Valley wine tour

• A coastal dune buggy tour

• The Abby Bach Festival in Mt. Angel

• The Rose City Dog Show

BikeGiveaway

In December, The Hope Project generously donated bikes to kids in Springfield. Willamalane staff jumped at the opportunity to help transport, tune up, and distribute them. Plus, Lane Council of Governments also donated helmets and safety gear to make sure kids can stay safe on the roads.

ParkRangerProgram Expansion

The impact of Willamalane’s park rangers goes beyond enforcing rules and regulations. Rangers play an important role in educating the community, advocating for parks and natural areas, collaborating with law enforcement, connecting resources to those in need, and maintaining safe and clean parks for the community to enjoy.

Willamalane hired the district’s first park ranger in 2018. Since then, the park ranger program and its success have continued to grow. At the end of 2023, we added a Ranger Supervisor position and made plans to hire a third ranger.
