New Business Creation Increased Despite Pandemic In the state of North Carolina 96,000 new businesses were started from January 1st, 2021 until the end of June 2021. This is an 80% increase statewide over the same period last year. 89% of those new businesses are still open, and 22% have reported that they created new jobs despite the pandemic. The North Carolina Secretary of State estimates that 95,600 more new businesses will be created by the end of 2021. “Our survey findings point toward a new era of entrepreneurship, with 81% of respondents indicating they launched their businesses in search of new opportunities, while just 12% report starting their new businesses as a result of job losses during the pandemic,” said Secretary Marshall. According to the article, new Wilkes County businesses increased in 2021 by 37% from the prior year. The Wilkes Economic Development Corporation supports start-ups and entrepreneurs in a variety of ways. For information on starting a new business, contact our office today by calling 336-838-1501.
