n today’s competitive market, many home buyers find that they have to extend their search to something they may have not have originally considered. It might be moving the boundaries of the area to live in, or looking at the option of an apartment over a house. Such considerations are explored in this issue. In Neighbourhoods, we look at the lesser known innerwest suburb of Earlwood. Its still close to the city and yet has the added value of space, parklands and an overall leafier feel. Alexandra Stamatiou-Buda, an agent at McGrath Leichhardt, says buyers in Earlwood come in search of character homes like those in Ashfield, Summer Hill and Dulwich Hill. “Here, they’re generally on a larger block of land and more affordable,” Stamatiou-Buda says. Meanwhile, in The Big Read, we look at those who have turned to apartments over houses today – and they tell us about why they are happy they made such a move.
What to see this Weekend
Once in a while, a home comes along that doesn’t just impress but truly takes your breath away. This resort-style Avalon Beach spread is a case in point. Designed by vendor Sarah Parry-Okeden’s Wild Orchid Spaces, the three-bedroom home is a head-turning fusion of textures, from rustic timber and dramatic dark joinery to beachy sandstone and warm metal tones. “At Wild Orchid Spaces, we work hard to achieve a beautiful synergy between the outdoors and in,” she says. Inside, find three spacious bedroom suites, a study, studio and rumpus room. Luxurious touches include underfloor heating, keyless entry, electronic gates and a Sonos sound system. Flowing from the main living zone is a showstopping entertaining space with a 20-seater dining table, kitchen, wood-burning fireplace and heated mineral pool. We love the island vibes of the thatched cabana and rattan pendant lights. Laura Mears of Belle Property Avalon is quoting a $5.3 million guide ahead of the May 8 auction. ELICIA MURRAY
