Abstract In 2008, Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) nests were built on 325 separate houses in Matsu, a small group of islands off the southeast coast of China administered by Taiwan. The most were found in Jieshou Village of Nangan Island. The peak of breeding occurred in the last 10 days of May with 458 active nests, and an adult population of about 916 individuals. The greatest number of eggs in a single nest was 9, with an average of between 4 and 5 eggs per nest. There were a total of about 2164 fledglings, and 172 pairs of swallows had a second brood after the first one had left the nest.
Although the active nests in the breeding season of 2009 is a
106 decrease compared with the nests of 2008, the number of fledglings of 2009 is 274 more than the number of 2008. In general, under the condition that there are less parents participating breeding, the successful breeding rate and the number of fledglings of 2009 are higher than 2008. The people of Matsu generally have a friendly attitude toward Barn Swallow; survey results indicated that as many as 80% of Matsu residents consider the Barn Swallow to be an auspicious animal. However, there is obvious unfamiliarity concerning knowledge of the swallow’s appearance and behavior, and people had some degree of uncertainty answering questions related to basic knowledge about swallows. More than 80% of the respondents supported the Lienchiang County Government to promote eco-tourism associated with the Barn Swallow.
