Shining a light on fostering across Nottinghamshire Fostering banners are appearing across Nottinghamshire in the run up to Foster Care Fortnight as part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s ongoing commitment to recruiting more foster carers for local children.

Foster Care Fortnight is a national campaign celebrating the incredible impact foster carers make and aims to encourage others to consider fostering. For some of the county council’s existing foster carers, similar banners were the spark that inspired them to take the first step.

Paula, who has been fostering alongside her husband for more than 12 years, recalls seeing the banners while travelling home from work.

“I was on my way back from work, coming down the A614, and there were the banners at the side of the road with the words ‘Could you foster?’,” she said. “I’d never really thought about fostering before that.”

“It genuinely felt like somebody was sending me a sign. I spoke to my husband and said, ‘Shall we find out more?’, and that’s exactly what we did.”

Shock and sadness across Arnold after car driven into crowd in town centre

A murder investigation is under way after a car was driven into a group of people in Arnold town centre during the early hours of Saturday morning, leaving one man dead and several others injured.

The incident happened shortly after 1.10am on Saturday, 9 May, in the Market Place area of Arnold, one of the busiest nightlife locations in the borough of Gedling. Police say a red Vauxhall Astra mounted the kerb and struck a number of pedestrians following what detectives believe was an earlier altercation.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with ambulances, police officers and critical care teams treating the injured in the street before several people were taken to hospital.

One victim, now named as 26-year-old Tyler Fairman, suffered life-threatening injuries and later died in hospital. Nottinghamshire Police confirmed on Tuesday morning that a murder investigation had been launched following his death.

Illegal cigarettes seized in Nottingham Two shops have been closed after officers discovered large quantities of illegal tobacco.

Nottinghamshire Police supported Trading Standards officers to carry out enforcement operations at Sherwood Booze, in Mansfield Road, Sherwood, and Vape Zone in Upper Parliament Street, in Nottingham city centre.

A search of the Sherwood premises led to the discovery of a false wall within a shelving unit in a back room. Behind it were 308 packets of illegal cigarettes and 17 pouches of illegal hand rolling tobacco.

The hidden stash of illegal products had an estimated street value of £1,625, with an investigation finding packets were being sold for as little as £5.

Brands including Richmond, Lambert & Butler, Marlboro Gold, Benson & Hedges, Top Gun, Platinum Seven and Oscar were among the seized packets, having not been made to EU or UK regulations.

Undercover officers attended the shop a number of times between September 2025 and March 2026 and were sold illegal cigarettes on three occasions.

Nottinghamshire Police applied for a threemonth closure order and it was granted by magistrates on Thursday (7 May).

On the same day, Vape Zone, in the city centre, was also issued with a three-month closure order having been caught distributing and selling illicit tobacco.

Police and Trading Standards attended the premises in Upper Parliament Street and found a quantity of illegal cigarettes on the front counter.

The closure orders come as Nottinghamshire Police announces the deployment of highvisibility patrols to different sections of the city centre as part of major plans to make Nottingham 'a no-go area' for criminals to operate.

Operation Reclaim is a collaborative project to solve the biggest problems affecting the city including youth ASB, drug dealing,

weapon-carrying, illegal e-bikes and retail crime.

It will bring together key partners to ensure that the city becomes as hostile as possible for criminals to operate.

Partners include Nottingham City Council, the Violence Reduction Partnership, Nottinghamshire’s Office of the Police and Commissioner and It’s in Nottingham, which represents city centre businesses.

We will use the Home Office tactic called Clear, Hold, Build, which is a three-phrase approach to make the city safer, restore trust and confidence, and tackle organised crime groups and those causing the most harm to the city centre.

PC Dylan Scally, who oversaw the closure orders, said: “Premises that sell illicit cigarettes show a blatant disregard for the law and their customers.

“It signifies a conscious and reckless decision to put people’s health at risk by exposing them to cheap unregulated products with no legal market.

“One of the primary roles of Trading Standards is to ensure fairness in the market place for all traders. These shops are situated in areas where there are a number of other genuine businesses offering similar products.

“By continuing to sell illegal tobacco products at a significantly reduced price, the shops were gaining an unfair advantage over

law-abiding businesses.

“Such illegal trading will not be tolerated and we will continue to work closely with partner agencies to take action where necessary.”

Chief Inspector Kylie Davies, of Nottinghamshire Police, added: “Illegal tobacco products cause real harm to our communities and can also be linked to other more serious criminal offending.

“We regularly carry out test purchases at local premises to ensure they are complying with the law, and I am pleased to say that most of our retailers are acting in a responsible way.

“Those who are not can expect to face

Teenager Who Beat Childhood Cancer and Won Gold for Great Britain Honoured at Police Awards A Nottinghamshire teenager who survived a life-threatening childhood cancer diagnosis and went on to win medals for Great Britain has been recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony celebrating inspirational young people from across the county.

Sixteen-year-old William Swan-Dennis, from Collingham, has been named a finalist in the Rising Above Adversity category at the Nxt Gen Awards, launched by Nottinghamshire Police to honour exceptional young people who have overcome challenges and made a positive impact on others.

William’s story is one of extraordinary courage, resilience and determination. At just 21 weeks old, he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of liver cancer known as Hepatoblastoma and was given only three days to live.

During the early years of his life, William spent many months in hospital undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatment at Queen’s Medical Centre. The treatment, while necessary, caused damage to his hearing and led to years of ongoing medical care and monitoring.

When chemotherapy proved unsuccessful in stopping the fast-growing tumour, doctors transferred William to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he underwent a life-saving liver transplant at just 10 months old.

Although the transplant saved his life, the challenges did not end there. William has continued to attend regular hospital appointments throughout his childhood and teenage years, carefully managing his health while balancing school, family life and his love of sport.

Speaking about his health journey, William explained how his daily routine still involves careful monitoring and medication to ensure his transplanted liver remains healthy.

“Over the years, I’ve had to take some time off, go to the hospital, get some checks, and I had to keep making sure I had enough fluids, enough nutrients through my body,” he said.

“I had to have a feeder through my nose and keep on top of my medicines to make sure my liver doesn’t back out.”

William also showed immense bravery following the devastating loss of his older brother Thomas, who died from a brain tumour in 2020. Through grief and adversity, he continued to focus on moving forward and making the most of every opportunity.

His dedication and determination were rewarded when he competed at the British Transplant Games in Oxford during 2025.

The event, which celebrates the success of transplant recipients while promoting the importance of organ donation, saw William deliver an outstanding performance.

Despite facing significant health challenges from such a young age, William has built an inspiringly positive outlook on life and has channelled much of his energy into sport.

Following his success in Oxford, William was selected to represent Great Britain at the World Transplant Games in Dresden, Germany — a major international competition bringing together transplant athletes from countries across the globe.

He discovered a love for athletics and competition early on and has since become an accomplished competitor in transplant sporting events, where athletes who have received life-saving organ transplants compete against others from around the world.

Competing on the international stage proved to be a proud and emotional moment for the Nottinghamshire teenager. Surrounded by athletes who had each overcome major medical challenges of their own, William rose to the occasion and delivered an

exceptional performance.

He returned home with a gold medal in the long jump, alongside silver medals in darts and ball throw, proudly representing Great Britain and inspiring others with his achievements.

Reflecting on his sporting success, William said: “Ever since I was young, I just always thought sports was a fun thing to do.

“I didn’t think too much of it when I first got that invite, but once the dates got closer to going to Dresden, I thought I’ve actually got to throw myself out there, because it’s quite a big thing.

“I’m really, really happy to win the gold medal, but you also look at all the other people who’ve come a long way, come also to compete, and they’ve done brilliantly as well.”

William was nominated for the Rising Above Adversity Award by his mum, Angela Swan-Dennis, who described her son as an inspiration to everyone who knows him.

She said: “As a baby, you could see the determination and strength that has brought him far in life.

“Through adversity, he has grown stronger and fought back to health to become the best version of himself and is enjoying being alive.

“William has been through so much and is still dealing with so much, but does it with positivity. He truly is remarkable.”

The Nxt Gen Awards, first launched by Nottinghamshire Police in 2021, celebrate young people across the county who demonstrate courage, achievement, kindness and perseverance. The Rising Above Adversity category specifically recognises young individuals who have overcome significant personal challenges while continuing to inspire those around them.

William’s incredible journey from critically ill baby to international gold medallist has made him a shining example of resilience and determination, as well as a powerful advocate for the life-changing impact of organ donation.

Perfume thief jailed and banned from Bridlesmith Gate for three years A prolific shoplifter has been jailed after stealing hundreds of pounds worth of perfume from a city centre store.

Hazel McPhee, aged 38, of no fixed address, was identified by CCTV footage after targeting L’Occitane, in Bridlesmith Gate, twice in two weeks.

Magistrates’ Court the following day, she pleaded guilty to all three charges.

She was jailed for 40 weeks and handed a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), which prohibits her from entering Bridlesmith Gate or the M&S store for three years.

On 21 April, she stole three bottles of fragrance worth £200 and on 3 May she stole four bottles worth £270.

She also stole a £240 handbag from Fred Perry, also in Bridlesmith Gate, on 1 March.

McPhee, who has multiple previous convictions for shoplifting offences, including at Marks and Spencer in Albert Street, was arrested and charged on Thursday last week (7 May).

PC Phil Yates, of Nottinghamshire Police, said he was pleased that McPhee had received a custodial sentence. He said: “I am thrilled with this outcome particularly with securing a CBO. Having spoken to many businesses on Bridlesmith Gate, Hazel McPhee has been a persistent problem for them as she repeatedly targeted shops on this street to steal high value goods.

“When challenged by

staff she has often become verbally abusive, threatening violence or used violence against staff after they caught her stealing.

“The CBO will offer them all peace of mind that Hazel is now prohibited from even walking down the street, let alone entering their premises once she is released from prison.”

It is the oldest building used by Nottingham Trent University and houses the Nottingham School of Art and Design. Summer pollinator sites return across Rushcliffe to see local wildlife thrive Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) is again creating a number of summer pollinator areas across the Borough to encourage wildlife and habitats to thrive even further.

It follows on from the success of the scheme over the last five years and complements the national ‘No Mow’ in May campaign.

RBC has identified over 35 sites across the Borough that will grow from May to September this year, covering over three hectares, mainly on land it already owns and maintains or areas selected by local residents or Town or Parish Councils.

Some locations have been amended following further discussions with residents, local councillors and the Streetwise team who maintain the sites. All feedback is requested to be emailed to design-conservation@ rushcliffe.gov.uk The Council’s Streetwise team are now not mowing selected areas across Rushcliffe to help create natural corridors to support and enhance local wildlife.

This sustainable management of the open spaces helps to not only mitigate the impact of climate change but supports the Council’s Carbon Clever initiative and its commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030.

If weeds become an issue at the sites alternative methods of removal will be considered that will not affect habitats and the scheme does not include highways verges or sites operated by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Nottinghamshire Police’s Nxt Gen Awards returned in style, with a show-stopping evening featuring talented singers and carnival dance troupe performances.

Powerful videos brought each nominee’s story to life, showcasing remarkable achievements and personal journeys that moved the audience.

The red carpet was rolled out as guests enjoyed an evening of entertainment and hospitality, and could also enjoy circusstyle acrobat, street dance, and graffiti wall activities.

In total, 13 winners and runners-up were recognised on the night, honouring young people who have shown exceptional resilience, selflessness and talent, or who have overcome adversity to inspire others.

New inclusive play area opens in Shelford A new inclusive play area has officially opened in the heart of Shelford, enhancing local recreational facilities and helping to create a more connected, active community for residents of all ages.

The play area at Shelford Playing Field, West Street features equipment designed specifically for teenagers, alongside accessible play facilities suitable for people with disabilities of all ages. New outdoor gym equipment has also been installed, offering fitness opportunities for children, teenagers, adults and older residents alike.

These new facilities are supported by additional seating areas, providing welcoming spaces for visitors to relax, read, or enjoy the surroundings, promoting mental wellbeing as well as physical health.

Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) awarded Shelford Parish Council £35,000 of UK Shared Prosperity Funding (UKSPF) towards the project, also supported by FCC Communities Foundation, the Shelford Millennium Fund, Nottinghamshire County Council and the Parish Council.

RBC’s Deputy Leader Cllr Abby Brennan attended the official park opening last weekend alongside Parish Councillors and Ward Member Cllr Debbie Soloman, as the local community came together to celebrate the new facilities.

Cllr Brennan said: “We’re really pleased to support this meaningful project through UKSPF and it was fantastic to see residents of all ages at the opening, who were all delighted with the new accessible play and gym equipment.

From heartbreak to hope Families help create new bereavement space at QMC For Nicola and Paul Johnson, the memory of losing their daughter Phoebe is something they will never forget.

Phoebe died in 2021, just 10 days before her 18th birthday, following a road traffic collision. After a frantic journey to Queen’s

Paul recalls: “When the machines were finally switched off, we were left traumatised in the middle of a busy corridor. We were pouring our hearts out and needed to be able to do that somewhere private.”

Their experience is one that too many families have shared, being surrounded by noise, urgency and clinical activity at a moment when all they need is space, quiet and compassion.

This week, Nicola and Paul returned to QMC for a very different reason: the opening of a new Child Bereavement Suite, a space designed to ensure that no family has to go through those moments without privacy and dignity again.

Medical Centre (QMC), they were left facing the unimaginable news, in the middle of a busy hospital corridor.

Thanks to Nottingham Hospitals Charity, and the fundraising of bereaved families, the new suite offers a calm, non-clinical environment away from the busy wards and departments of the children’s hospital. It has been created from a former office within the hospital school and is the first dedicated bereavement

space serving the entire children’s hospital, bringing support together in one place for all families.

For Nicola and Paul, being at the opening was both emotional and meaningful, a reminder of their daughter, and a hope for other families.

The vision for the suite came from staff who have seen first-hand the need for a dedicated, sensitive space.

Alongside others who have experienced similar loss, they have helped raise funds to bring the suite to life, turning their grief into something that will support others in their darkest moments.

NUH Child bereavement nurse specialist, Lucy Lawton, was interviewed by the BBC about the new facility and said: “When a child is at end of life and dies, it doesn’t mean end of care for the child and their family.

“For us bereavement care is of the upmost importance and it needs to be in a sensitive and thoughtful environment. Myself and Helen Bailie, had the vision for the dedicated space for families, something on site but away from the business of the hospital.

“Having this room is one of the ways in which we can show our families how important they are to us and how their support matters.”

The suite has been made possible thanks to funding from Nottingham Hospitals Charity, with the generous fundraising efforts of bereaved families.

Kevin underwent surgery at NUH on 24 May 2024, and further tests confirmed he had stage one testicular cancer, with a 1.4cm tumour contained to one testicle.

“At one point I said I felt like a bit of a fraud,” Kevin explained. “But Lucy told me, ‘You are not a fraud, you’ve had cancer, and you’re lucky you caught it early. That shows the power of regular self-examination.’”

Kevin says there is still a stigma around men’s health, with many men reluctant to speak up when something feels wrong. His message is simple: “Check once a month for a couple of minutes, ideally in the shower.

“Use firm pressure, cup your testicles with both hands and know what’s normal for you. If something hurts or feels different, get it checked. And if you’re worried about bothering your GP, don’t. They would always rather you came forward." Looking to the future, now, Kevin remains positive: “I’m living like it never happened,” he said.

“I’ve got a great support network around me, and I want other men to know that checking yourself really can save your life.”

JOURNEY TO FOREST - ELLIOT ANDERSON For Elliot Anderson, he was just another lad from the North East who was obsessed with football in a city where the sport comes top of many people’s interests.

The difference being the Forest maestro possesses a natural ability for the game, forcing his way into a regular starting spot for England in the summer FIFA World Cup after starring in the Reds’ midfield since his arrival on Trentside in the summer of 2024.

But going back to the start for Anderson, there was a time when he enjoyed spending time with his friends before football would become a huge part of his life.

“I was football mad really, I think everyone is up in Newcastle and all everyone wants to do there is play football. I’d have school, go to training after and watch the games at the weekend. I loved biking and going out on my scooter with my mates. I used to go to the skate park after training and on the weekend and I used to go to a lot of family events and things like that.

“We used to have soft footballs around the house and I just took to it really quickly. My older brothers used to go to what was called ‘Star Strike Soccer’ on the mornings of the weekend and I joined them there because it was at the local school. From then I was hooked and I loved it.”

Anderson would soon become a regular watching his boyhood club, Newcastle United, and his interest was quickly focused on the Magpies.

I knew I could go into a team so I took the step to come here and of course it’s a huge club. It’s definitely been the best thing I've done in my career and I love it here.

“I settled very quickly. £1.9 MILLION INVESTMENT SET TO TRANSFORM HISTORIC FOREST SPORTS ZONE Nottingham Forest Community Trust has announced a major £1.9 million redevelopment of the Forest Sports Zone, a facility at the heart of the community and located on the historic site of Nottingham Forest Football Club’s original home.

The redevelopment will see both existing pitches upgraded to modern, highperformance 3G surfaces. The current 3G pitch will be resurfaced with new materials and improved LED lighting, while the adjacent sand-based pitch will be fully reconstructed to create an additional allweather 3G pitch, increasing year-round capacity.

Alongside the pitch improvements, the changing room facility will be extended to include a new two-storey entrance, expanded office space and a dedicated community area, creating a welcoming and accessible hub for local people, clubs and organisations.

Since launching as the Forest Sports Zone in 2015, the facility has become one of the busiest community sports facilities in the UK, welcoming over 2,000 community members each week.

The venue plays a central role in physical activity, opportunity and connection across Nottingham, bringing together grassroots football, holiday clubs and health and

wellbeing programmes.

Located at the Forest Recreation Ground, the area is where Nottingham Forest Football Club first laid its foundations in the city, making it one of the most significant locations in the club’s illustrious history.

This redevelopment reinforces Nottingham Forest’s presence in the city beyond the City Ground, ensuring its heritage remains visible and relevant in the communities it serves.

Through this investment, Nottingham Forest Community Trust continues to connect with local communities creating a space where future generations can engage and access high-quality, inclusive provision.

This investment will ensure the facility continues to meet the needs of the community for years to come, while enhancing the quality of provision on a site with deep historical significance.

The project is being delivered through a partnership between Nottingham Forest Community Trust, Nottingham City Council and the Football Foundation, with funding contributions of £625,000 from the Trust, £1 million from the Football Foundation and the remaining balance from Nottingham City Council.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST WOMEN PART COMPANY WITH CARLY DAVIES

Nottingham Forest Women can confirm the Club has parted ways with Head Coach Carly Davies.

Davies was appointed in August 2023 and has played a significant role in the development of the Club since her arrival.

Following the transition to becoming a fulltime professional team, the 2024/25 season saw Forest Women win promotion to the WSL2 and win the National League Cup, in what was a domestic double for Carly’s side.

The current campaign in the second

tier has seen the team finish mid-table in a competitive league and after careful consideration, as the team continues to push towards the WSL, the Club has made the decision to begin a fresh cycle under new management.

YOUNG REDS EXIT PDL PLAY-OFFS

Nottingham Forest B Team bowed out of the PDL play-offs after losing 2-1 to Norwich City U21s at the City Ground on Monday.

The young Reds enjoyed a bright start to the game and were rewarded for their efforts when Fuad Smith opened the scoring in the 16th minute.

Jimmy Sinclair broke down the righthand side of the box and delivered an excellent ball into the path of Smith, who made no mistake from close range.

Forest continued to enjoy the better of the chances but were unable to build on their one-goal lead before the break.

Half-time: Forest B Team 1-0 Norwich City U21s Warren Joyce’s side continued to play on the front foot at the start of the second half, but another goal eluded the young Reds as the Canaries defended well.

Jake Glossop equalised for the visitors in the 56th minute with a powerful effort into the bottom corner.

As both sides fought valiantly for the winner, and Forest continued to create plenty of chances, it was Norwich who nudged ahead in the 71st minute.

Brandon Forbes headed home from the middle of the box after a smart move, and the Canaries moved ahead.

Forest gave everything in the closing stages to find an equaliser, but it continued to elude them and, despite valiant efforts, the young Reds’ season ended in defeat at the City Ground.
