Former Nottinghamshire school site set to get new lease of life A former primary school near Newark is set to provide new housing and improved community facilities for residents.

The vacant 1.2-acre Manners Sutton site, which closed as a school in 2021, is proposed to be split to maximise public benefit, with around half of the site intended for residential development and the remainder for community use.

This approach reflects the council’s commitment to sustainable growth, stronger communities, and making best use of public assets.

The proposal follows feedback from local groups and elected members highlighting a shortage of public open space and community facilities in Averham and neighbouring villages. By setting aside part of the land for community-led use, the council aims to create a space that supports social connections, health and wellbeing, and inclusive local growth. The housing element would help meet local needs, with all new homes required to meet current national and local sustainability standards.

The move aligns with the council’s Community Asset Transfer Policy, which allows land to be transferred at less than market value where there is clear evidence of social, economic, or environmental benefit, subject to due process. Any transfer would include a legally binding agreement to ensure those benefits are delivered and monitored.

“The Manners Sutton site offers a real opportunity to provide both much-needed housing and new community facilities for Averham. By working with local groups and inviting wider interest, we’ll make sure this asset delivers lasting benefits for residents and supports our sustainability and growth objectives.”

How officers saved distressed man's life through ‘grainy’ picture he sent to his friend Quick-thinking officers used their photographic memory to locate a distressed man who was threatening to take his life.

Officers were called on Monday 12 January just after 6pm following a concern for safety.

A man, in his 30s, was threatening to take his life and refusing to give his location.

However, he had sent his concerned friend a grainy picture of where he was.

Officers from Broxtowe’s Neighbourhood Policing Team and response officers were able to identify the location due to their local knowledge of the area.

They cross referenced the location against Google Maps. They then followed fresh footprints in the mud near the M1 where they finally located him.

He is now being offered welfare support.

Arrest after car stolen from hospital car park A suspect has been arrested following reports that a vehicle was stolen from a hospital car park.

Police were called when a 29-year-old woman returned to the Queen’s Medical Centre multi-storey car park after an overnight stay to find her car missing.

It’s believed the vehicle was taken as the victim waited in the hospital with her child on the evening of 27 November 2025.

Her car keys were left in their pushchair nearby to them during the stay.

She then became aware that her debit card – that was left in her vehicle - had been used at a host of shops across Nottingham without her knowledge.

Attempts to use the card totalled up to over £200 of charges, all of which were unsuccessful.

The missing car was recovered when it was reported to be blocking a driveway on

Hoyland Avenue, Lenton, on 30 November.

A suspect was then detained on Sunday (4 January 2026) following an extensive CCTV trawl and other inquiries.

The 33-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of fraud and theft of a vehicle.

She has been released under investigation pending further inquiries.

PC Lewis Orrill, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This has understandably been a distressing time for the victim, with the loss of her possessions timed with the anxiety that often accompanies any visit to hospital.

New technology helps police tackle illegal e-bikes in Nottingham city centre Police have unveiled a new tool in their crackdown on overpowered e-bikes in Nottingham city centre.

For the first time, officers are using a compact dynamometer to test the top speed of e-bikes, as well as private e-scooters.

Under UK law, the electric motor must disengage once the bike or e-scooter reaches 15.5 mph (25 kmph) for it to be ridden in a public place.

The new device, made by Swiss company Wenger and funded by the Office of the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner, is enabling neighbourhood officers to measure the peak speed of an e-bike or e-scooter without needing a full test track or laboratory.

It involves officers placing the twowheeled device onto the dynamometer and accelerating the back wheel, with a digital readout telling them how fast it can go.

Where it fails to comply with the law, the bike or scooter is seized.

Officers are using the new device as part of Operation Wrangel, which was launched by the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team in November to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour linked to the illegal use of two-wheeled vehicles.

The operation is particularly targeting e-bikes as feedback from the public suggests they are people's top concern when walking in the city centre.

PC Ben King, of the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team, said the new device is helping officers tackle an issue that has been a growing concern for some time.

He said: “Overpowered e-bikes and e-scooters are becoming a growing issue nationally and remains the number one concern raised by people in Nottingham city centre.

“Many riders modify their motors or install ‘speed unlockers’ to bypass factory limits, turning them into lightweight electric motorcycles without the required registration, insurance, or safety gear.

“We’re increasingly finding illegal modifications, and tools like this portable device make enforcement easier than ever.

“We know members of the public have had enough of nuisance and illegal riding in the city centre and this device is helping us tackle the issue head on.”

The term ‘e-bike’ is a generic term used to describe all two-wheeled electric vehicles.

Some e-bikes are legal to use on a road or other public places just like a standard pedal cycle. These legal e-bikes must conform to the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) regulations.

EAPCs are legal to ride without a licence or insurance if the rider is aged 14 or over and the bike meets the following criteria: • the motor must have a maximum output of 250 watts • the motor must only assist while pedalling (not via a ‘twist and go’ throttle/ accelerator) • the electric motor must disengage once the bike reaches 15.5 mph (25 kmph) • the bike must display manufacturer information, battery details, maximum speed, and power output, either on a securely fitted plate or clearly marked on the frame.

If an e-bike does not meet these criteria, it is classed as an electric moped or electric motorcycle and must comply with relevant laws, including registration, insurance, helmet use, and appropriate licensing.

Under current UK law, private e-scooters cannot be ridden on public highways or in public spaces. They are only legal to use on private land with the landowner’s permission.

If you don't have the correct licence or are riding without insurance in a public space, you could face a Fixed Penalty Notice, which may include a large fine and penalty points

on your licence.

If you're using an e-bike that does not conform to the EAPC Regulations, on a road or in a public space, or an EAPC in an antisocial manner, you also risk the vehicle being seized.

To combat non-compliance in Nottingham city centre, neighbourhood officers seized 34 e-bikes for failing to comply with the law between 3 November last year and 5 January, with 24 riders facing subsequent court proceedings for having no licence or insurance.

Forty-eight education packs were also distributed as part of the operation over the same period.

Sergeant Dan Butler, who leads Operation Wrangel, said these numbers are continuing to rise as more enforcement days are held. He said: “The reckless use of e-bikes, off road motorcycles and e-scooters are more than just a nuisance to communities, they are being

used to commit serious criminal activity including drug supply, weapons offences and violence.

“The public can expect to see various operations targeting two-wheeled vehicles over the coming months and beyond, to provide a visible presence and disrupt offenders.”

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden welcomed the launch of Operation Wrangel. He said: “Overpowered e-bikes and illegal e-scooters might look like a nuisance on the surface, but in reality they are often being used to fuel serious crime and put innocent people at risk.

“That’s why I’m happy that the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner was able to fund the purchase of this vital tool, the use of which is backed by proactive operations like Wrangel, because neighbourhood officers need the right tools to deal with what communities are seeing on their streets.

“This new testing equipment gives officers the ability to take swift, decisive action against vehicles that are being used to intimidate residents, move drugs and avoid police.

“It’s a really practical example of how we’re investing in modern policing to keep Nottinghamshire safer, support our neighbourhood teams, and restore confidence in our city centre.”

Local authorities collaborate to strengthen fostering As the New Year begins, four local authorities across the East Midlands have continued their commitment to improving the lives of children in care. Through the Foster for East Midlands Councils (FFEMC) initiative they are working together to increase local fostering capacity and providing children with stable, nurturing homes close to their communities.

The four councils, Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Nottingham City Council, and Nottinghamshire County Council have established a collaborative hub to streamline recruitment, provide highquality support for foster carers, and ensure that children remain close to their schools, friends, and communities.

Among the early success stories are Sharnie and Zak, who became foster carers through the FFEMC initiative. The first child they cared for was just for a few days which exceeded expectations. Sharnie said that fostering “isn’t about being perfect, it’s about showing up with love.” The couple praised the guidance, training, and support provided

by FFEMC for giving them the confidence to open their home to a child in need.

Kerry and Neil describe fostering as “one of the most rewarding things we have ever done. You see children grow in confidence when they feel safe and supported.”

Shelly and Lyn, who have cared for over 100 children, say: “Every child brings something different. Knowing you’ve given them love, stability and positive memories stays with you forever.”

Notts woman turns to personal injury firm after spa chemical leak Express Solicitors is supporting swimmers with their legal action against a Nottingham spa after they were hospitalised due to a chemical leak last year.

Enid, who was a lifetime member of the spa and paid £800 for her membership, said: “I went to the gym to keep healthy and ended up getting gassed. It’s terrifying as now it has damaged my health instead of keeping me fit. The specialists say my damaged eyelid which was leaking pus is a direct result of my exposure.”

District Council unveils ambitious plans to enhance parks and green spaces Newark and Sherwood District Council has unveiled exciting new plans to further enhance parks and open spaces across the district, ensuring the much-loved community assets continue to thrive for years to come.

The plans, which will be discussed at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday 20 January, consist of a number of phases over the next few years. The first phase, which could take place in 2026/2027, looks at £30,000 in investment for a number of Council-owned parks and green spaces, including those with the potential for prestigious Green Flag status.

Clay Lane in Newark and Thorpe Oaks/ Stirling Drive in Coddington have been identified for investment and development as possible Green Flag parks for the future, whilst Cherry Holt, Fairfax Avenue and the wider Hawtonville Estate in Newark would also benefit from new sensory planting, community orchards and increased tree cover.

The majority of the Council’s parks and open spaces are within Newark – including three of its five Green Flag parks, with the other two being in Ollerton and Clipstone However, to ensure that spaces within Towns and Parishes across Newark and Sherwood also benefit, a £100,000 Parks and Open Spaces Legacy Fund is also proposed, which with matchfunding from Towns and Parishes, could see a further £200,000 being invested in parks and open spaces across the District The final phase of the plans, which could take place in 2027/2028 subject to decision and consultation with communities, would see more than £500,000

invested into significant play infrastructure While the Council plans on consulting local residents first before any plans are approved, a new modern Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) could be installed on Cherry Holt Play Park, whilst two ‘pump-tracks’ for BMX’s and scooters could also be installed on Cedar Avenue in Newark and Turner Lane in Boughton.

If these plans are approved and delivered, the Council will have facilitated or delivered investment of more than £1.5 million on parks over the past few years. This includes £350,000 in 2023 across ten sites and a further £500,000 for the redevelopment of Sherwood Avenue Park, which recently regained its Green Flag status.

These improvements have provided modern, accessible play and fitness equipment, creating inclusive spaces for families and children with no admission costs.

Councillor Simon Forde, Portfolio Holder for Climate and the Environment, said: “We know that our parks and green spaces are really important to our residents and this programme of works forms part of our response to delivering what matters most to our community.

“We want to make sure the whole of the district is included and not just parks and open spaces the District Council owns. Once the Open Spaces Legacy Fun is open, we will want to work collaboratively with Town and Parish Councils, and focus on parks that could benefit from some sprucing up.

“The plans also respond directly to resident feedback and survey data highlighting the growing importance of parks and open spaces, particularly in the wake of the pandemic and ongoing cost of living pressures. This district has a strong link to our environment and open spaces, and we want to do more to make sure that not only are they protected but improved for future generations to enjoy.”

RBC to plant over 15,000 trees and shrubs to create Rushcliffe Woods Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) has acquired 54 acres or 30 football sized pitches of land to plant over 15,000 trees and shrubs to offset carbon from its operations and keep it on track to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The Council are one of only a handful across the country that are currently investing in a project of this nature, it will transform former agricultural land in Upper Broughton and start to create Rushcliffe Woods in the next eight weeks, offsetting in time over 230 tonnes of carbon a year.

Partners met on December 10 to plant one of the first trees that will start the creation of the vast site that will also include meadows and wetlands with the thousands of native broadland trees funded by grant applications.

The project will offset 64% of the Council’s current carbon output or 16 houses worth of carbon annually and plant trees supplied by partners Greenwood Community Forest, also in partnership with Defra and the Foresty Commission.

The site will also give the village its first

publicly accessible larger green space and assists with the Forestry Commission’s target to increase tree cover by two per cent in England to 16.5% by 2050.

Leader of RBC Cllr Neil Clarke said: “This is a significant moment in the journey of the longer-term sustainability of the Council’s carbon offsetting of its operations and make us on track to be carbon neutral by 2030.

“Since 2020 our Carbon Clever project has made considerable inroads into lowering carbon output such as with over £5m investment of measures at leisure centres in Cotgrave and Keyworth this year and now over 70% of our vehicle fleet running on electric or vegetable oil.

“We hope planting these thousands of trees and shrubs can be another way to highlight to organisations and businesses how to explore ways to offset their carbon operations and assist all the Borough to be carbon neutral by 2050.

“It’s also a key way to promote nature recovery and tree canopy coverage to also

Balancing ponds created to help offset heavy rainfall at Edwalton Golf Club

Edwalton Golf Club has now invested in new balancing ponds to help offset the impacts of heavy rainfall at the site and minimise the impact on its courses and the community.

Overseeding will now take place on two new ponds in the coming months so the new features blend into the site’s landscape which will hold rain water and provide overspill capacity from the neighbouring brook after heavier downpours.

The ponds will hold water and release it slowly back in into the watercourse, preventing it from reaching the clubhouse which will also ensure it can minimise the risk of its café, lounge and facilities closing due to adverse weather.

New tarmac around the club house will also direct water away from the building and towards the ponds, meaning more golfers can enjoy its nine-hole main course, par 3 course, driving range and putting green.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Wellbeing and ICT Cllr Jonathan Wheeler joined ward councillors Cllr Gordon Wheeler and Hetvi Parekh to take a look at the investment.

He said: “Edwalton Golf Centre is a fantastic venue. Building on over £100,000 of investment last year, we really want to ensure it can operate even when we have challenges from the extremities of the weather so have now allocated a further £110,000 for this work.

“This latest investment will mean the courses and facilities are affected less by

heavy rain. It’s a really popular course for Rushcliffe residents and those from further afield and we encourage everyone to come and take a look around, enjoy a round of golf, use the driving range and all the facilities on offer.

“We have a lovely café where you can relax and catch up with your friends, enjoy a refreshing drink and tasty freshly cooked pizza from our kitchen.

“There’s also a pool table in the lounge area if you fancy a game of pool. The meeting room has free wifi and is available for anyone to hire, it’s a great spot for local groups.

“In the last 18 months we’ve also invested in new golfing equipment, course enhancements, new mowers, tee returfing, bunker refurbishment, and signage around the facility to encourage non golfers into the clubhouse.

“Five new electric golf buggies are in use replacing their previous petrol equivalents and helping to reduce carbon emissions at the course too.”

Cinderella at The Thea The Theatre Royal Nottingham’s Christmas pantomime is a cornerstone of the city’s festive calendar, and Cinderella, which ran from December 2025 through to early January 2026, more than lived up to that proud tradition. “Since my ear reconstructive surgery, I knew I wanted to be a surgeon.”

Olivia Howe, a Surgical Trainee, at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) was inspired to care after receiving reconstructive surgery at 10 years old.

Olivia was born without her right ear and was deaf on her right side. She was born with microtia and atresia which mean t she was born with a very small and malformed right ear, and she had no ear canal.

Olivia said: “At 10 years old I decided to undergo reconstructive surgery where they took cartilage from my rib and a skin graft from my leg to reconstruct my right ear.

“Since that first surgery I was so inspired by the surgeon, the day after my surgery I started operating on my teddy bears and I haven ’t really decided about any other career since.

“I had a total of three surgeries for my ear and in every one of them I was so touched by the expert care from all the clinicians involved , including the doctors, nurses, and the healthcare staff. “ I knew that I really wanted to make people feel how I felt in that moment of

being helped. ” Olivia is now in her second year of core surgical training and is applying to higher specialty training for general surgery .

She added: “Now that I am actually a surgical trainee it feels a bit surreal, from such a young age I dream t of being a surgeon and now I can finally call myself one.”

City Hospital Patient Honoured for Nearly 50 Years of Youth Work A Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust (NUH) patient’s lifelong dedication to youth work has been recognised in the King’s New Year’s Honours List.

Mark Greenhalgh, a 65-year-old youth work coordinator, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for almost 50 years of supporting young people across Nottinghamshire to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE).

Born in Manchester, Mark moved to Nottingham at the age of 10. He mentions his grandfather, a minister who also led youth work, as an early influence, showing that a commitment to helping others runs through his family.

Reflecting on his journey, whilst being cared for at City Hospital, Mr Greenhalgh said: “I was a bit of a tearaway myself, hot-headed and got in trouble with the police.

“Back in 1978, a youth worker encouraged me to help with a trip away for some young people, and I never looked back.”

Mr Greenhalgh was admitted to City Hospital shortly before Christmas after experiencing breathing difficulties. Less than a week later, he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

He is currently being cared for by staff on Hogarth Ward. He said: “It’s a good ward, and the staff here are great.”

Pictured with his wife of 44 years, Hilary Greenhalgh, Mark added: “If it wasn’t for that volunteer 50 years ago at the Boys’ Brigade who saw something in me, I wouldn’t be doing this.

“I’m a bit embarrassed by the attention, because community work like this takes so many people. But if a bit of publicity inspires more people to help young people, then that’s okay.

“I sometimes think, why should I receive this honour when so many of us are doing the same thing? This award is f or the youth worker who inspired me 50 years ago and for the rest of my team.”
