Board Puts Pen To Paper For £25 Million Funding For Town Centre Projects Major investment in St Helens Town Centre has moved one step closer as agreements are

signed with government for £25m funding.

Last week members of St Helens Town Deal Board unanimously agreed to sign the Heads of Terms with government on a £25 million package of projects submitted to Ministers earlier this year through the Town Deal Fund.

Work is now underway on developing the detailed business cases for the exciting projects in the Town Investment Plan, which was created by the board members representing local public sector organisations, business leaders, members of the voluntary community and politicians.

Chairman of St Helens Town Deal Board John Tabern signed the agreement, and said: “I’m delighted we can put pen to paper on accepting the £25 million from the Town Deal Fund, our Town Deal Investment Plan has rightly been recognised by Government as a positive plan to reshape St Helens Town Centre.

The amount of funding we received constituted the highest ever award for a Labour controlled Local Authority, which is testament to the strength of the plan we submitted.

Now the real work starts to assess the best way to make the projects contained in the plan, a reality.

Whilst at the same time transforming the town centre and helping to open

up further opportunities for investment in our vision.”

The Town Investment Plan projects include expanding on Glass Futures, the innovative research facility which will be built next to the Totally Wicked Stadium, as well as creating new town centre living, creating a better-connected town centre with new walking and cycling routes, supporting healthy communities through the creation of a youth zone and health

innovation hub, improving digital infrastructure to help businesses grow online, and enhancing our rich local heritage through the development of a St Helens Heritage World.

In addition to the £25 million from the Town Deal Fund, the six projects outlined in the Investment Plan are set to generate significant match funding from local organisations and other funding sources, complementing the wider

regeneration which will be delivered via the council’s partnership with English Cities Fund.

Councillor David Baines, Leader of St Helens Borough Council, said: “Our success in winning an offer of £25m is testament to the quality of our bid and the hard work of the board and Chairman John Tabern.

Signing the Heads of Terms agreement is another milestone moment as we continue working together with the local private, public and third sector to transform St Helens town centre, and I’m looking forward to sharing more information about our progress in the months ahead.”

Lancashire Aims For More Funding For Transport Moves to support a bid for up to £50million for transport schemes in Lancashire have been given the green light by councillors.

The Government has made £4.8billion available through its Levelling Up Fund, which aims to give local authorities the opportunity to get 'shovel-ready projects' underway in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Members of Lancashire County Council's cabinet agreed on (Thursday 8

July) to back a proposal to create a bid for a share of the funding, and make up to £5million available in match funding.

It is expected the final bid would be submitted later this year. County Councillor Alan Vincent, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, said: "This is a really important step for the council and it's vital we make resources available to give this bid the best chance of succeeding.

"We can bid for up to £50million, which will go

a long way to supporting major transport schemes in the county, which in turn will benefit residents.

"The Levelling Up Fund has been designed to not just bring economic benefits to areas, but also help bind communities together by bringing inward investment and jobs, while also enhancing the local skills base and tackling health inequalities.

"We know that bids will be prioritised which invest in regeneration and growth and feel Lancashire has a

really good chance." County Councillor Charlie Edwards, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: "I'm rightly proud of the transport schemes we already have underway in the county, such as the building of the Preston Western Distributor Road and the M55 to Heyhouses Link Road.

"But I would also like to see Lancashire receive a fairer share of funding for our road network, and so we will be putting together the strongest bid we can to get more schemes off the ground.

"We will fight tooth and nail for this investment, as we know what a positive impact these schemes can have on people’s lives and ensure that Lancashire continues to grow.”

Preston City Council has also officially become a participant in the United Nations Climate Neutral Now Initiative, formalising its commitment to climate action and a net-zero world by mid-century. The recognition comes following the work Preston City Council has undertaken over the past ten years to reduce its emissions and its aspirations moving forward to become carbon neutral by 2030. Councillor Carol Henshaw, Cabinet Member for Climate Change at Preston City Council, said: "We are proud to have achieved this recognition from One Carbon World for our work to reduce carbon emissions and make the services we provide greener.

In 2019 we declared a climate emergency, and since then, we have been working hard to look at the services we provide and the energy we use. As an organisation, we have always been mindful of the changes happening to the climate and the role we can all play, so we have been striving to make our operations more ecologically friendly for a long time.

I am very proud of the work everyone has done and the progress we've made despite the pandemic and the delays this has inevitably caused.

By making changes internally, we hope to inspire other businesses and organisations in the city to look at how they do things and see where they can cut their emissions to improve our carbon footprint as a city.

We are working hard to make Preston City Council a carbon-neutral organisation by 2030, and while there's a long way to go, this recognition is a positive step along that journey".

Over the past ten years, Preston City Council has taken steps to reduce its carbon emissions, including the installation of solar panels on the roof of Town Hall, switching to LED

lighting in council buildings and installing more energyefficient windows.

The city council are also undertaking projects to upgrade ICT equipment to greener alternatives and looking at how to make street cleaning and maintenance vehicles that the council operates more energy efficient. Climate Change also forms a key part of the renewed strategy for Community Wealth Building which was launched earlier this year. Part of the strategy is a commitment to drawing up a climate action plan which will outline the steps the organisation will take as it works toward its target of being carbonneutral by 2030. As part of the Lancashire County, Preston City Council and other local councils are now case studies in the

AgriCaptureCO2 project, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme, which aims to make it easier and more profitable for farmers to adopt regenerative agriculture practices. Preston City Council will work also be working closely with other local authorities and organisations in the city, such as Uclan, to share ideas and approaches on reducing carbon emissions. Newsagent Prosecuted

Bolton Council has welcomed the successful prosecution of a newsagent who was caught in possession of illegal cigarettes for supply.

Zeashan Muhammad Din was given a 14 month community order with 70 hours of unpaid work at Wigan & Leigh Magistrates’ Court last month following a raid by officers from Bolton Council’s Regulatory Services team in March 2019.

Officers visited AHZ News in Bolton, which is owned by Mr Din, after receiving intelligence that illegal cigarettes were being sold at the premises and uncovered packets of cigarettes found to be illegal to sell in the UK. Illicit tobacco is the term used to describe cigarettes and loose tobacco which are not in approved UK packaging and does not carry required health warnings.

The items were seized by officers and sent away

for testing where they were proven to be illegal and a prosecution case against the shop owner was prepared.

At Wigan Magistrates Court, Mr Din pleaded guilty to offences under The Standardised Packaging of Tobacco Products Regulations and the Trade Mark Act. Mr Din, who has previously been convicted of this offence, was also ordered to pay £2,000 costs and a £85 victim surcharge. Cllr Hilary Fairclough, Bolton Council Executive Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services said: “This case was brought to court thanks to the joint work of council officers and the police.

We hope this prosecution sends a clear message to any retailers in Bolton who are trading in these illicit products. “Tobacco sold in the UK must comply fully with packaging regulations.

This means it must be in plain packaging and carry the appropriate health warnings.

The trade in illicit tobacco, illegally brought in from abroad, poses even greater health risks than legal products.

“The council will not hesitate in taking legal action against retailers who don’t comply with the law.”

Council Brings A World Of Adventure To Believe Square Children are being invited to step into a world of adventure this summer as Wigan Council launches a series of imagination inspiring events.

Believe in Storytelling launched at Believe Square on Wednesday August 4 with families taking part in a range of fun and free activities based around the theme of Space.

Space is the first of four themes to be featured, with the following weeks changing to focus on Nature, Oceans and Magic.

Councillor Chris Ready, portfolio holder for Communities, said: “Families looking for fun, imaginative and inspiring events to go to during the summer holidays should look no further than Believe Square in Wigan.

“These activities are aimed at bringing out everyone’s imagination and inspiring children to have fun, dress up and enjoy thrilling storytelling sessions.”

Activities range from storytelling and drama to dance and crafts. All will be open to all gender identities, abilities, and access needs.

Sensory sensitive sessions will also be offered upon request.

Don’t Trash Oldham: Five People Fined More Than £5,700 As part of Oldham Council’s drive to clean up the borough we have successfully prosecuted five people.

The following cases were all heard recently at Tameside Magistrates’ Court: • Layek Hussain of Bamford Street, Oldham didn’t clean up a property she owned on Lime Street, Chadderton.

When she failed to comply with a Community Protection Notice ordering her to sort out the mess we prosecuted her. Ms Hussain was found guilty in her absence and was fined £1100, with prosecution costs of £475 and a victim surcharge of £110.

• James Vance, of St Mary’s Gate, Rochdale, attended court and was convicted for a Duty of Care offence – waste taken from his property was found flytipped on Osborne Street, Oldham. Vance was fined £123 with a contribution of £100 towards costs, plus a £32 victim surcharge.

• Brett Peeler, of Honeywell Lane, Oldham, failed to appear in court after waste from his home was found

fly tipped on Holden Street.

Peeler was prosecuted for a Duty of Care offence in his absence and fined £660, with prosecution costs of £900, plus a £66 victim surcharge.

• Mohammed Rahmani, of Old Church Street, Manchester, failed to appear in court. Rahmani was prosecuted for failing to comply with a Notice to bring in his Waste Transfer Notes after it was found his business premises had no bins. He was given time to bring in proof of a waste contract for his business which he failed to do.

Rahmani was prosecuted and was fined £500 with £900 costs, with a £50 victim surcharge.

• Vasile Calin, of Ashton Road, Oldham, appeared in court after waste from his home was found fly tipped in the alleyway to the rear of his property. Calin was prosecuted for a Duty of Care offence and was fined £200, with prosecution costs of £531 and £32 victim surcharge.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Deputy Leader of Oldham Council

and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Prosecutions like this show Oldham Council is serious about cleaning up our borough. “We know residents don’t want to live in a tip and that’s why we are investing an extra £1.27m into cleaning up

streets as part of the Don’t Trash Oldham campaign.

“We are currently recruiting more enforcement officers who will be operating across the town. If they see littering, fly-tipping or dumped waste they’ll investigate and if evidence is found they’ll take action.

“Cleaning up waste costs all of us – money that could be better spent elsewhere.

“We all want a cleaner place to live so everyone needs to do their bit – dispose of your waste properly and if you pay someone to get rid of it for your check they have a waste carriers licence or you

could end up in trouble.”

From January 1 to June 30, 2021 we issued 157 fines for fly-tipping, with more pending.

Free Coronavirus Tests at Three Centres in Ribble Valley

Ribble Valley residents, visitors and workers can now take a free rapid coronavirus (Covid-19) test twice a week.

Alongside the vaccine rollout, regular testing is at the heart of plans to suppress the spread of coronavirus variants.

Everyone in Ribble Valley can now access free, regular, rapid coronavirus tests from the new lateral flow testing centre in Clitheroe and popup centres in Whalley and Longridge. Rapid testing has so far been available to those most at risk, or who need to leave home for work, including NHS workers, care home staff, teachers and schoolchildren.

Now rapid testing is being offered to everyone and people are encouraged to take regular tests to help prevent outbreaks.

One in three people with Covid-19 do not have any symptoms and may be spreading the virus without knowing it. Rapid testing detects cases

quickly, meaning those who test positive can isolate immediately.

And since rapid testing was introduced over 120,000 positive cases that would not otherwise have been found have been identified across the UK. Ribble Valley Borough Council leader Stephen Atkinson said: “As we continue to make good progress on the vaccine programme and with the roadmap to easing restrictions underway, regular rapid testing is even more important to make sure those efforts are not wasted.

“Around one in three people who have Covid-19 show no symptoms and as we return to the new normal regular rapid testing is going to be fundamental in helping us quickly spot positive cases and stop outbreaks.

“Reclaiming our lost freedoms and getting back to normal hinges on us all getting tested regularly.”

Riding, added: “Lateral flow testing is a simple way to keep yourself, friends, family, colleagues and customers safe.

“Taking a test is quick, easy and free – the tests are painless and you get the result within half an hour.

“They are another tool to help us maintain lower infection rates and I encourage everyone to take up the offer of these free rapid tests.”

The lateral flow testing centre in Clitheroe is based at the Council Offices car park in Church Walk. It is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm.

Pop-up centres operate at Longridge Civic Hall on Tuesdays and Fridays from noon to 6pm and Whalley Village Hall on Tuesdays from 9am to 4pm.

Oldham Council Approves Places For Everyone – A LongTerm Plan For Jobs, New Homes, And Sustainable Growth

Oldham Council has approved Places for Everyone setting out how we’ll build the much-needed quality, affordable homes Oldham desperately needs.

The plan also shows how we’ll create jobs and vibrant neighbourhoods so that our town and future generations can get on and do well.

The plan for our borough contains less greenbelt allocations than ever with brownfield sites providing the majority of Oldham’s future housing and employment space.

Cllr Arooj Shah, Oldham Council Leader and cabinet member for Economic

and Social Reform, said: “We listened and shared residents’ concerns about the loss of Oldham’s precious green belt – and we have left no stone unturned in exploring ways that we can protect it from development.

“In the last year alone, we have removed a further 1,800 homes from green belt allocations, deleted sites completely and massively reduced others.

“The Government says Oldham needs 12,800 homes by 2037 to meet our housing need – without a plan of how we will achieve that, all of our green spaces and green belt are at risk.

“We stand alongside residents in wanting to protect our green spaces but while government dictate how many homes we have to provide space for, Places for Everyone is the best outcome possible.”

Brownfield sites will provide 7,712 of the homes Oldham has been told it needs with green belt providing less than 20% of them (2,176 homes). We reduced pressure on the green belt thanks to strategic decisions made by Oldham Council, including the investment in redeveloping Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre, which will unlock

Changes To Wyre’s Cabinet Following the Lancashire County Council elections in May earlier this year, a number of changes to Wyre’s Cabinet have been made. Councillor Alan Vincent has been elected Deputy Leader of Lancashire County Council with responsibility for Resources, HR and Property. Councillor Vincent has therefore stepped down as Deputy Leader of Wyre Council and Portfolio Holder for Resources.

Taking his position on Wyre’s Cabinet and Deputy Leader position is Councillor Michael Vincent. Councillor Alice Collinson has also joined Wyre’s Cabinet as Portfolio Holder for Planning Policy and Economic Development.

Commenting on the changes, Councillor Michael Vincent said, “I sincerely look forward to taking on the role of Deputy Leader at Wyre and working with officers and councillors in my role as Resources Portfolio Holder.

“In my career as a councillor I have been fortunate enough to work on some fantastic projects and I look forward to continuing this as your Deputy Leader.”

Councillor Alan Vincent, commented, “I will deeply miss my role as Wyre’s Deputy Leader and Resources Portfolio Holder, but I look forward to my new role as Deputy Leader of Lancashire County Council. “I hope that I can help bring about great changes to the whole of Lancashire and add a Wyre perspective to the county’s Cabinet.”

Cllr Hannah Roberts, Cabinet Member for Housing said: “We know that Oldham desperately needs more and better homes for our residents – however the Government housing target of 680 homes a year is something that has been set nationally. We have repeatedly challenged this figure to no avail, so, we must work with what we have. “We are actively working to bring forward brownfield developments, working with landowners and looking for opportunities to make sites viable, we’re looking at land assembly to put together sites in the

best possible way and we’re using the resources we have such as the flexible housing fund. “New homes are also at the heart of our regeneration work in Oldham Town Centre. We’re being as proactive as we possibly can be to protect as much of our green land as we possibly can. “Not going forward with this plan only ‘kicks the can down the road’ and because we don’t currently have an adopted local plan, it continues to put our open spaces at risk.

“There are no easy choices here, but this is the best option we have. Without Places for Everyone, everything is up for grabs.”

Places for Everyone has been reviewed by elected members from the nine councils taking part in it (all GM local authorities except Stockport), and now the plan will go out to an eightweek public consultation between 9 August and 3 October. Residents will be asked whether the plan, and the evidence on which it is based, meet what are

called “tests of soundness”.

These include whether the plan promotes economic growth and makes provision for development; whether it is backed up by robust evidence; whether the plans are based on effective and achievable policies; and whether they are consistent with policies at a national level. Members of the public will also be asked whether the nine local authorities have provided the necessary evidence and complied with the requirements arising from the duty to co-operate, which places a duty on local planning authorities to engage constructively with one another to maximise the effectiveness of local plans.

Following the consultation, the plan would then be submitted to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government in January 2022.

Restoration Begins On The Iconic Darwen Tower!

Works are officially underway to restore and repair the landmark Darwen Tower, as part of the Darwen Town Deal.

Darwen Tower is a Grade 2 listed octagonal Jubilee Tower built in 1898 by public subscription to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

Whilst the location of the Tower is what makes it iconic and visible across the whole borough, it also makes it vulnerable too.

Sitting at the top of a hill on Darwen Moors has exposed the Tower to the elements over the years, and work is now required to restore the building to its former glory.

These improvements have been made possible after the Darwen Town Deal Board successfully secured more than £750,000 of Government funding for ‘quick win’ Town Deal projects. From this, £225,000 has been awarded to restore the Tower, along with £70,000 of local fundraising efforts led

by Darwen Rotary and a £10,000 contribution from Blackburn with Darwen

Borough Council.

UK Restoration Services, specialist restoration contractors, and Mann Williams, consulting structural and civil engineers, have now been selected and the works have officially kicked off – including repairs to the rainwater disposal system, repairs to the deck of the upper observation level, improvements to access and more. Signage is going up around the site to inform residents and the many visitors to the Tower of the construction and repair works happening, and scaffolding is now in place.

The works are due to be completed in October 2021.

A short video is also being created to showcase the restoration works – keep an eye out for it very soon!

This investment in the restoration of Darwen Tower, alongside the re-roofing to the Clock Tower on Darwen Town Hall, completing at the end of July, means there is almost £500,000 worth of improvements to the heritage of Darwen

currently underway. These improvements will ensure that these iconic buildings are conserved and can continue to be enjoyed by many future generations.

Wayne Wild, chair of the Darwen Town Deal Board, said: It’s fantastic to see these works begin on Darwen’s much-loved landmark.

It’s safe to say that almost every single resident has enjoyed a walk to the Tower and its spectacular views at least once in their lives – and now they can continue to do so for many more years to come. The building is an important part of our town’s history and the Darwen Deal is really proud to be supporting these works.

These improvements will also help bring visitors to the town – something we’re really focused on as part of the Darwen Deal.

Ribble Valley’s ‘Little Gem’

Sculpture Trail Features In New Film One of Ribble Valley’s most successful cultural projects described as a ‘little gem’ by an international travel website is the subject of a new short film.

The Ribble Valley Sculpture Trail, situated along 1.5 miles of woodland and flower-rich grassland between Brungerley Park and Cross Hill Quarry in Clitheroe, was started in 1993, with the wood carving, Two Heads in a Tree, by Thompson Dagnall.

It now features 22 unique artworks reflecting the borough’s environment and heritage from some of the best artists in the UK, including the famous Sika Deer crafted in stainless steel by Clitheroe sculptor Clare Bigger and six ceramic pieces by Halima Cassell, whose distinctive geometrically-patterned work enjoys an international reputation.

The trail was the first sculpture trail in Lancashire and is now one of Ribble Valley’s most popular visitor attractions.

And now it is the subject

of a short film produced

by Ribble Valley Borough Council and Tom Pope of Tepee Creative that is going viral on social media.

Ribble Valley Borough Council’s arts development officer, Katherine Rodgers, said: “The aim of the sculpture trail was to make art accessible and create a free cultural activity that encouraged people to enjoy Brungerley Park, explore the outdoors and keep fit, and engage with the natural beauty of the area and its wildlife.

“The trail now features the work of several artists, who have gone on to enjoy international careers and critical acclaim, and attracts visitors from far and wide.

“Now, partly due to the pandemic, people are enjoying the outdoors more than ever and we have made this film to raise awareness about this fabulous trail for residents and visitors to enjoy in a stunning riverside setting.”

The Ribble Valley Sculpture Trail skirts the River Ribble and, as well as dramatic views of the Forest of Bowland, you can routinely spot kingfishers, herons, salmon, sandpipers, otters and bats.

It has many enthusiastic followers and is described on travel website TripAdvisor as a ‘little gem’.

Studies show that 57 per cent of people now go on more walks or walk for longer than they did before the pandemic.

A walk can improve your mood, is good for your physical health and you can discover something new on your doorstep that you wouldn't have previously found.

And with continuing uncertainty around international travel, Ribble Valley has found itself at the centre of a staycation boom, with much of the borough’s accommodation already booked for the summer.

A Beginner’s Guide To The Barbecue

Now that it’s officially summer, it’s time to get outside and grill. What’s that? You’re new to grilling?

You’re afraid to light a barbecue?

Well, have no fear. It’s not as complicated as it looks.

For those just finding their way around a grill, we’ll follow up with some of the first steps to throwing some food on the barbie. And for those who are already all fired up, we’ve got some ideas ready to go, as well as a slew of barbecue tips and tricks. And even if outdoor

grilling isn’t an option, try indoor grilling! Get Your Grill On! (How to Use your Barbecue) • If you’re using a charcoal grill, empty the ashes from your last grilling session.

• Both types of grills need to be pre-heated before you start cooking. Gas grills turn on easily (make sure the lid is open while you’re lighting the grill!), To light your charcoal grill, you’ll need a chimney starter. Please don’t light your charcoal with lighter fluid! It seems like a quick fix, but it can make

your food taste “chemical.”

Let the gas grill heat up for at least 10 minutes, and your charcoal grill for at least 20.

• After your grill is preheated, use a brass-wire brush to scrape the charred goo and gunk off of the grate. You’ll need to give it a good scrape at the beginning of grilling season. Then, during grilling season, a quick brush before and after grilling should do. After you grill your last meal for the summer or fall, leave the grease on the grate to prevent rusting over the winter. (If you don’t have one of those brushes, you can use some aluminum foil to do the trick!)

• Once your grill is clean, oil the grate by grabbing an oiled paper towel with some long tongs, and wiping it over the bars. You’ll need to use an oil with a high smoking temperature, like canola oil.

• Now that your grill is hot and the grate is clean, your food won’t stick to it as

much, and you’re likely to get those classic grill lines!

What to grill Sure, everyone knows steaks and burgers can go on the grill, but did you know that it’s also great for sandwiches and pizza? Here’s a list of ideas to get you started.

• Truly GRILLED grilled cheese. • Vegetables are easy to grill, just pick your favorite vegetable and give it a try! • Or try vegetable kebabs if you prefer yours on a stick. • Corn on the cob comes with its own “packet”… the husk! It’s perfect for throwing on the grill, once you have these simple directions! • Grilled sweet onions wrapped in bacon would make a great appetizer or party food. • Grilled pizza doesn’t have to be complicated!

• Beef tenderloin sandwiches with a garlic mayonnaise topper sound like a great lunch for a lazy summer day.

• Pork chops and caramelized onions are simple to make on your

grill!

• Grilled Teriyaki Beef Kabobs are seriously tasty, especially if you make your own teriyaki sauce! Yum! • Salmon is a firm fish with a naturally high fat content – perfect for grilling. Leaving the skin on during grilling protects the flesh from overcooking and falling apart. • Who can resist Classic Baby Back Ribs!

Barbecue Tips and Tricks • To avoid losing juices during turning, always flip your meat or vegetables using tongs or a spatula, rather than a fork.

• Try to limit the flips.

Ideally, you should flip each item once during the grilling process.

• Whatever you do, don’t press down on burgers or chicken (or anything) with a spatula while they’re grilling! This squeezes out the juices and once they’re gone … they’re gone! If you’re bored and need something to do with your hands, learn to juggle (but

not too close to the grill, please!).

• For great smoky flavor, soak some wood chips (hickory, oak, or other hardwoods but not treated lumber!) in water for a while, then throw them onto your charcoal and cover the grill, or if you’re using gas, put them into your smoker box following the manufacturer’s instructions.

• To infuse grilled foods with herb essence, toss herbs directly onto the charcoal while you’re grilling. Or, if you’re using a gas grill, soak the herbs in water, and place them on the grate before putting your food on top of them.

• If you want to baste your meat or vegetables, save this step for last. That way the sugars in ,your marinade or sauce won’t have time to caramelize or burn.

• If this all sounds too complicated, or if it’s raining or cold outdoors, you can grill indoors with a contact grill or use a grill pan.

Cumbria’s Summer Activity Programme Launches

With the school term about to end, Children and young people will be spoilt for choice of things to do this summer with Cumbria’s Summer Holiday Activity Programme.

200 different activities are on offer from more than 60 organisations through the school holidays. From

football camps and rock climbing to zoo visits and circus skills, the range of activities on offer is huge.

Funded by the Government’s Holiday Activity and Food Programme all the activities are free for families whose children receive benefitsrelated free school meals.

Over half of the activities

also have paid-for places available to all children and young people. Around a third have additional free places available for children in particular circumstances, eligibility depends on the organisation running the activity.

Some activities are for single days, others offer a

multi-week programme. All activities must be booked in advance.

in the District. A "stickle" is a hill with a prominent rocky top. Harrison Stickle's summit area is composed of the pebbly sandstone and breccia of the Pavey Ark Member. Several greenstone knapping sites have been found below the main peak, and following the strike of the tuff exploited at nearby Pike O'Stickle in the neolithic period.

The sites on Pike O'Stickle have been well described as the Langdale axe industry, but they have been found to be much more widespread than originally thought. The rock was roughly shaped

on site, and then traded across the country, where the final polishing could be undertaken. Such polished axes have been found in Buckinghamshire for example as well as in East Anglia.

The axes varied widely in size, shape and function, and most were designed to be fitted with either wooden or bone handles (using pointed butt ends or narrow waists).

The summit is a short rocky ridge with a cairn at each end, the northern one being higher. The view from Harrison Stickle is as good as the view of it — a

Plan Ahead Before Visiting Snowdonia Gwynedd Council is urging motorists to plan their visits in advance.

This follows numerous examples of irresponsible parking in the Pen y Pass

area of Snowdonia over the weekend. Councillor Gareth Griffith, Gwynedd

Council Cabinet Member for Environment said: “Over the weekend,

Gwynedd Council staff worked with colleagues from North Wales Police and Snowdonia National Park to deal with a significant number of parking offences in the Penypass area.

“Motorists who ignore parking restrictions on these narrow mountain roads are endangering other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians and cause serious access issues for emergency service vehicles.

“The Council’s parking enforcement team issued over 180

fixed penalty notices to motorists at Penypass on Sunday.

“We would urge motorists to plan their visit in advance before they set-off, to check the Snowdonia National Park website which offers regular updates of when their car-parks are full and to make use of the numerous car parks at Llanberis and Nant Peris.

“We would also strongly recommend that visitors use the regular Sherpa bus service which links all the main Snowdon car parks with the various summit paths.

By doing so, they will be reducing the volume of traffic for the benefit of local residents and visitors to the area as well as avoiding an unnecessary fixed penalty.

“As a Council, we are discussing the weekend incidents with partners from North Wales Police and Snowdonia National Park and considering if any further steps can be taken to prevent dangerous and illegal parking in this area.”

Yorkshire Air Museum

The Yorkshire Air Museum has burst back to life celebrating the wonder of Aviation, which we proudly proclaim as Yorkshire’s greatest invention! Did you know that the aeroplane was first invented in our own county?

Museum Director Barbara George explains: “Scarborough born nobleman George Cayley was so inspired by the passenger carrying hot air balloons of the Mongolfier brothers in France that he defined the principles for a ‘flying machine’ in 1799, designing the very first outline of a ‘conventional’ aeroplane with fixed wings, a ‘fuselage’ and using the acts of propulsion and lift as individual functions to make it fly.”

This ultimately led to the

creation of his full-size glider which, in 1853, made the first mancarrying flight at his family home at Brompton by Sawdon.

The Museum is proud to display the unique replica of this amazing craft which now takes take centre place in our huge hangar, strikingly mounted on a plinth, along with other iconic Yorkshire designed aircraft, such as the Blackburn Buccaneer, the last of a long line of aircraft from the company founded by Leeds born Robert Blackburn, and, of course, own unique WWII Halifax Mk. III bomber, “Friday the 13th”.

This is so named after the most successful Halifax, flying from its Yorkshire base at RAF Lissett near Bridlington.

BREAST SCREENING Can Help Save Lives By Detecting Cancer Early Every 3 years, the National Breast Screening Programme invites all women registered with a GP between the ages of 50 up to their 71st birthday for a mammogram.

Eligible women receive an invite letter informing them that they are due their breast screening and are advised to book an appointment.

1. What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that’s used to find breast changes in the breast tissue that could be due to cancer. It spots cancers that are too small to see or feel. Early detection saves Lives.

2. How do I get a mammogram? The National Breast Screening Programme invites all women between the ages of 50 up to their 71st birthday every 3 years for breast screening. Each GP practice is screened in turn and all women that are registered with a GP receive an invitation letter through the post informing them that they are due breast screening.

3. What happens next…?

If you choose to have your mammogram, you will need to make an appointment by calling our Breast Screening Office on 01282 805301 or using our online booking form via the following

website: www.elht.nhs.uk/ services/breast-imagingscreening-service. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, your appointment will be held at Burnley General Hospital. This will be either at the main department or on our mobile unit situated in the hospital grounds.

A letter or e-mail will be sent to you confirming your appointment. Also included will be directions detailing where to come on the day as well as additional Covid- 19 guidelines; please read these carefully.

The guidelines will include advice on visiting the hospital and the procedures in place to protect both you and the staff.

4. What do I wear? It’s always easier to wear a two piece outfit because you will need to remove your top and bra. Please do not apply deodorant or talcum powder as this can affect the quality of the mammogram.

5. What to expect Your mammogram will be carried out by a female radiographer. Each breast is compressed in a special x-ray machine for a few seconds while an x-ray is taken. This compression can be uncomfortable for some women but any discomfort soon passes. The mammogram takes about 5 minutes and could save your life.

6. Getting your results……

You should receive your results in the post within 2 weeks of having your mammogram.

7. What next….? Most women will have a normal result and will be invited back again in 3 years for their routine mammogram.

In-between mammograms, you should be breast aware and check your breasts regularly. If you notice any changes or are suffering from any signs or symptoms you should contact your GP.

Bolton Wanderers 0-0 Barnsley (Wanderers win 5-4 on penalties).

Bolton Wanderers defeated Sky Bet Championship side Barnsley to progress to the second round of the Carabao Cup after beating the Yorkshiremen 5-4 on penalties at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Although Wanderers were probably the stronger side in the second half, nothing could separate either team after the regulation 90 minutes.

The penalty shootout was of high quality with each side emphatically finding the back of the net until Joel Dixon kept out Devante Cole’s strike.

Substitute Josh Sheehan struck home the winning spot-kick to put Ian Evatt’s side into the hat for Wednesday’s draw.

The Wanderers manager made six changes from that side that drew against MK Dons on Saturday with Ricardo Almeida Santos returning to the starting XI. Joel Dixon made his firstteam debut in between the posts, while Nathan Delfouneso, Kieran Lee, Lloyd Isgrove, and Liam Gordon came in for their first starts of the campaign.

Dixon was pressed into action early on to make a point-blank save from the head of Clarke Oduor.

Cauley Woodrow was then flagged for offside as he put the rebound into the net.

The visitors almost went ahead but for a vital save by Dixon who kept out Odour’s mis-hit from close range after the frontman got on the

end of a Jordan Williams' cross into the box.

Wanderers were presented with a good chance when Liam Gordon’s trickery played in Doyle, but the Irishman was robbed of possession as he tried to find an angle to shoot from.

Josh Benson picked up the game’s first yellow card when he brought down Kieran Lee just as the midfielder was in full flow.

A blatant foul to halt a Wanderers counter-attack.

Antoni Sarcevic’s ball back into the box after the Tykes’ failed to clear a Wanderers corner had Jack Walton scrambling towards his goal line but the effort eventually went wide.

Victor Adeboyejo was played in after the visitors

won the ball in midfield, but he fired wide after being placed under pressure by the returning Almeida Santos.

The best move of the game came after the half-hour mark when George Johnston turned away from his man on the edge of the box, to play a neat one-two with Sarcevic. The defender’s low strike didn’t have enough power to trouble the diving Walton though.

Callum Styles’ deflected drive from the edge of the box fell safely into the arms of Dixon. The former Barrow stopper had come into the team to put in admirable display between the sticks.

Sarcevic found the ball just outside the box after Delfouneso and Gordon

combined over on the left but the Wanderers skipper drilled his low left-footer across the goal and wide of the mark.

Walton punched away Isgrove’s inswinging freekick shortly after the restart as Wanderers commenced the second half on the front foot. Almeida Santos then saw a looping header go wide of the target from Isgrove’s corner.

Evatt made his first change ten minutes into the half when Amadou Bakayoko came on for Delfouneso.

Wanderers were firmly on top and with the introduction of Bakayoko certainly had their opponents on the back foot. Doyle was replaced

by Elias Kachunga after 65 minutes with Bakayoko

moving over to the middle of the front three.

Gethin Jones had his name taken, rather harshly, despite appearing to win the ball as Barnsley broke away through Cameron Thompson following a spell of pressure for the hosts.

A rare attack by Barnsley saw Thompson cross into the box for Cole, but the striker’s diving header at the near post was easily gathered by Dixon.

A quick free-kick from Kachunga found Lee and the midfielder’s cross was cleared behind for a corner.

Ian Evatt's men had the bit between their teeth in search of a late winner.

Wanderers made their final change with a straight swap when Josh Sheehan came on

for Lee with 12 minutes of the game remaining.

And Wanderers got the win they deserved thanks to a successful shootout with Sarcevic, Isgrove, Bakayoko, Kachunga, and Sheehan all netting.
