Favorite Teacher at Wilburton Public Schools (all grades): Judy Hulsey Judy was my Kindergarten teacher, so she was my first school teacher I ever had. She was compassionate and understanding of my shyness and was so loving. I love her so much and am so very glad that I had the privilege of being her student. There was always different people in each of those places, but I would say most of my time was spent with Laura Morgan, Michael Garner and Matt Dilbeck. 8. Memories of Wilburton High School: What I remember the most, was my time on band and choir trips. They were a lot of fun with some really great people. Some of which are still my close friends today. Life since WHS: Education: Received Bachelors of Arts from East Central University in 2005 Family: I am not married and have no children, but I am a very attentive aunt to my precious nieces and nephews. Memories of Wilburton High School: I have so many fond memories. My Volkswagen being picked up and moved. Game nights. The teachers that were so caring and involved. Working in the office with Susan was the best. I had so much fun with my friends and will always cherish my high school years. One memory that is very fine to me was while working in the office every day, I had the honor of reading a daily scripture and having a moment of silence “prayer” during announcements. What a blessing to be in a school that allowed us to read scripture and pray. I am so proud to be a graduate of WHS! Eastern Oklahoma State College sophomore Hannah Truitt was one of the two students to receive the 2015 Larry Stone Award. Stone was a popular football and basketball player at EOSC in the 1960s and was known for his commitment to his team and his selflessness. He was killed while serving his country on patrol in Vietnam. This award has been presented to one male and one female student since 1967 who exemplify the same characteristics as Stone. Both recipients embody the spirit of teamwork, citizenship, selflessness, determination and excel in their scholarly efforts as well as athletics.

Truitt, a WHS graduate with the class of 2013, was a sophomore speech and drama major. She was a member of the cheer squad for two years and a team captain for one. She has appeared in several theater productions at Eastern and received an Iren Ryan nomination for her role in “Hedder Gabler”. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and has been named to Who’s Who Among College Students. Hannah has volunteered to read to students in the local elementary school and Head Start program. Truitt graduated from Eastern with a 3.74 grade point average and is pursuing her bachelor’s degree at Northeastern State University. ) Truitt Receives 2015 Larry Stone Award Haley Blackwood, WHS Class of 2014, graduated from River Valley Cosmetology Institute in Poteau, OK and is working as a Stylist at House of Beauty in Wilburton. Haley Blackwood Graduates Three Generations of one family from Wilburton have not only officiated high school football games, but have officiated the annual All-State Game. The late Bill Johnson, his son Bob Johnson, and grandson Josh Anderson. Bill called the All-State game in 2004; Bob in 1999 and Josh in 2015.

Bill officiated for 22 years before his health forced him to quit. Bob has officiated for 30 years and counting. Josh has officiated for 14 seasons. Another of Bill’s grandsons, Jack Helt, is on his fifth season. Josh is from the WHS Class of 1998 , and Jack is a 1999 WHS graduate.

Josh also had the privilege of being on the crew from Wilburton that called the Class 5A State Championship game in December 2015. He is taking the season off, however, so he can watch his daughter play the drums in the Wilburton High School Purple Pride Marching Band. Three Generations Officiate at All-State Football Game Have you ever had a big dream of going somewhere far away or doing something really different? Wilburton graduate, class of 2000, Trent Hardaway fulfilled his longtime dream of running with the bulls in Pamplona Spain. Trent went alone on a 16 day trip to Europe with the highlight being the Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, which includes the Running of the Bulls. Trent read the book The Sun Rises by Ernest Hemmingway when he was a young teen and has wanted to experience this for himself ever since. Trent enjoyed visiting museums, the local food and even tried surfing. He was able to take in much of the local culture and traditions while on his trip. Local Runs with the Bulls in Spain The Wilburton High School Wrestling team competed in its first tournament, January 15-16, 2016 at Catoosa High School. There were a total of 171 wrestlers from 15 different schools. Wilburton had three wrestlers compete, Freshman Miguel McKinley and Montanna Patzack and Sophomore Zach Sims. Patzack was the only female wrestler in the tournament and finished 16th, wrestling against Heritage Hall, Bishop Kelly, Owasso, Pawnee, Thomas Edison and Newcastle. Our wrestlers earned respect from other schools and were given encouragement from other wrestlers about how much our team has learned since beginning High School Wrestling in October WHS WRETLING TEAM COMPETES IN FIRST TOURNAMENTW

The WHS Alumni Officers and Board of Directors would like to issue an apology to all alumni for the unfortunate withdrawal of the traditional alumni roll call at the 2015 Alumni Banquet. This was a last minute decision to pull the popular event and we appreciate the feedback that this event is widely accepted and should remain. There was much to celebrate last year and consequently events ran long and changes were made to best accommodate as much of the schedule as possible. There were no intentions of excluding any alumni from this unique event. Please be assured the roll call will continue every year as usual until all alumni have had the opportunity to be recognized by their prospective classes. The roll call will live on! Roll Call Will Live On

Alumni Game Day Activities The annual WHS Alumni Banquet is a labor of love and would not be the successful event it continues to remain if not for the support and generous efforts of local alumni volunteers. The association would like to share our appreciation to Joyce McClain, WHS Alumni Class of 1971, for the delicious cakes she created in tribute to our beloved alma mater at the 2015 banquet as we celebrated our Centennial. Joyce donated three large beautifully designed cakes to the association last year for an added sweet celebratory dessert!

Joyce reports she was a member of the first graduating class of the then newly constructed high school in 1971. She served as faculty with WPS for 22 years before her retirement in 2004 teaching mainly in the arts and family and consumer science. Joyce’s father, Don McClain, also WHS Alumni Class of 1948, like Joyce, spent his career in education teaching more than 40 years with a few years with WPS before moving on to higher education to finish his teaching career at Eastern Oklahoma State College. Don now serves on the Wilburton School Board. Both reside west of Wilburton just outside of city limits. Thank you McClain Family for so many years of continued support to Wilburton Public Schools! Sweet Donations WHS SCHOOL SONG Faithful and true hearted, let us boost for our old high. We revere her and defend her and her colors proudly fly. We will stand for her united and her deeds we’ll gladly tell. Her colors streaming, glad faces beaming. So here’s a cheer for her that we all love so well. Chorus Joyous and ever loyal let us boost for our old high. Let every heart sing, let every voice ring. There’s no time to grieve or sigh. It’s ever onward, our course pursuing. We defend her - her honors true. So united we will boost for her our old high school. Honors she has taken, on the track and with the ball. May she always stand the highest and her colors never fall. There’s no other that can match her when her team is on the field. Her boys the fleetest, her girls the sweetest. So here’s a cheer for her that we all love so well. Hand Stitched Digger Pride

The stunning WHS Alumni quilt raffled last year at the 2015 Banquet was a great success. The commemorative quilt was sponsored entirely by alumni contributions, their names and grad years all listed within the beautifully designed purple, grey and white quilt squares. The fundraising project was headed by local alumnus Melissa Smith, WHS Class of 2004 and all monies raised were placed in the general association fund. The quilt squares were designed and provided by Stitch-N-Stuff, a local alumniowned print shop on Wilburton Main Street. Owner Toni Miller-Hall, WHS Class of 1969, along with the help of her daughter Susan Rigsby, WHS Class of 1986 and Susan’s son Brett Rigsby, WHS Class of 2006, spent many hours on the breathtaking tribute to commemorate the 100th Year of the WHS Alumni Association. The quilt was constructed by Patti Manley, wife to local WHS Alumnus Rick Manley, Class of 1978. Patti spent many hours building the gorgeous Digger quilt by hand and she and husband, Rick, donated their time and all materials needed for the project. The quilt, raffled following the 2015 banquet, was taken home by lucky winner Genia Taylor, WHS Class of 1993, daughter to the late Nancy Taylor, long-term WHS faculty. Nancy taught with the WPS for 24 years and served as Wilburton High School Principal from 1992-2006 before her passing in 2007. Now engraved at the entrance to the Nancy Taylor High School, her namesake remains as a memorial to her service and dedication to the youth of Wilburton. What a very fitting honor that her daughter Genia, was to be the lucky recipient of the 2015 Commemorative Alumni Quilt!

A portion of her vision for running an organization in SE Oklahoma is to provide job placement, which will increase our economy in this corner of the state, as well as bring talented providers to those in a impoverish area. Some of these select patients perhaps would not otherwise have the ease of access to this sub set of health care.

For example, when leading music at her local church for several years or watching her daughters perform in the Wilburton High School Marching Band and Vocal Music. The second favorite is the drive in May for Mental Health Month, (green ribbon week) and education. Dr. Caldwell prefers to stay abreast of all community and state changes relating to business and mental health issues due to how it may effect the services provided to the people she cares for. This passion and care is what drives her daily to continue with her team of fellow Oklahomans in service to others.

2016 marks 30 years for Dr. Caldwell and the 1986 High School Graduating Class. Dr. Caldwell recognizes none these accomplishments were made alone. “It is always a team effort.” Dr. Caldwell reports a daily “special thank you to my Lord in Heaven, family, friends, and colleagues” that have stood by her throughout this journey. She remembers “some of us were in class or training together many times throughout the years, or took me with you to trainings”. “Our journey is not over. We start a new chapter together.
