I

have a friend and colleague who often says, “The difference between good schools and great schools is philanthropy.” This rings true when you consider philanthropy as the bridge between aspiration and achievement. It connects the dreams of our students, our faculty, the administration and the Board of Trustees with the resources necessary to make those dreams a reality.

Guided by an ambitious vision and a detailed master plan, the Academy stands on the precipice of this bridge, pushing boundaries and achieving what was at one time unimaginable.

Phase II of the Campus Master Plan is within reach, and we are set to embark on a historic campaign to secure $50 million in bequest intentions, which when realized will strengthen the Academy’s endowment and secure its future. Within this context, the role of philanthropy cannot be understated.

Your generosity has been the catalyst for groundbreaking initiatives, transformative scholarship opportunities and exceptional new facilities that equip students with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-evolving world.

We live in an era defined by rapid change. BOARD MESSAGE We Celebrate Every Contribution

W

hen the first Giving Report was mailed after the 2019-2020 school year it was something of an experiment. Although donor lists and a short summary of giving had appeared in Academy World issues for years, it didn’t feel like enough. It wasn’t deep enough to celebrate the impact of philanthropy on the Academy, to tell the stories of those whose generosity was moving us forward. So, while many institutions were dropping printed “annual reports,” WMA did the opposite. We zigged when others zagged.

Now in its fourth edition, The Giving Report has proven its worth, both through the positive feedback we have received and the real philanthropic decisions it has inspired. Inside these pages, we continue to highlight some of our strongest supporters, educate on the different forms support can take, celebrate the impact your generosity is having and report on the financial health of the Academy.

The most important goal was always to inspire more members of the WMA community to offer their financial support to the Academy. It is an amazing time in our history. We are standing at the foot of the bridge between lofty aspiration and incredible achievement, and each of us can play a crucial role in the Academy’s success.

To those of you who made a gift, you have my heartfelt appreciation along with that of the entire Board of Trustees. You are keeping WMA strong during extraordinary times and positioning us for a bright future ahead.

FEATURE DONOR PROFILE Peter C. Lincoln ’55W

30 Years of Service to WMA Culminates in a Bequest of $1.8M

W

ilbraham & Monson Academy lost one of its most influential leaders and strongest supporters with the passing of Peter C. Lincoln ’55W on Dec. 13, 2022.

Mr. Lincoln was elected a Trustee of the Academy in 1993, made Chair of the Board in 1997 and served in that role until 2005. After stepping off the Board, he remained an active volunteer, supporter, mentor to Heads of School and a respected voice around decisions large and small.

A quiet kid from Longmeadow, Massachusetts (and great-great-grandson of Daniel Wesson, cofounder of Smith & Wesson), Mr. Lincoln entered Wilbraham Academy for his sophomore year.

His classmates recall him as kind, self-effacing, studious, intellectual and forthright. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Atlas, contributing writer for Del Todo and business manager for Atlas. He had a knack for uncovering interesting stories, earning him the nickname “Scoops.” Unable to play sports due to his poor eyesight, Mr. Lincoln managed the Junior Varsity and Varsity Soccer teams, Spring and Winter Track teams and Junior Varsity Baseball. He also competed on the Debate team and participated in the drama program.

“Peter was highly intelligent without a shred of self-promotion,” Grant Renier ’55W said. “He was very literary and into the arts. While he was socially quiet, he was listened to when giving an opinion.”

Mitchell Garabedian ’55W agrees: “Peter was not only a friend to all of his classmates, but was always available to help anyone who needed additional assistance with their studies. We were a small class, but he was the glue that bonded so many of us together.”

Don Tull ’55W remembers working with Mr. Lincoln on a theater production during their junior year.

“The Drama Club put on a production of Gilbert & Sullivan's ‘The Pirates of Penzance,’’’ Mr. Tull said.

“Peter was the accompanist for the show, and one of the highlights of the production was a duet that he and I played. Peter played the piano and I played the old pipe organ, which was still operational at that time. He was one of my best friends.”

“He was a local boy like me, though two years ahead,’’ Bill Faulkner ’57W said. “I looked up to Peter and respected him as a straight shooter. He was seemingly a friend to all and a mentor to many. His ever-present smile was welcoming.”

Mr. Lincoln clearly made an impression on those around him, but perhaps none more so than on his roommate, the late Robert T. Hale ’55. Mr. Hale experienced severe family trauma during his time at the Academy, and Mr. Lincoln and his family stepped in to fill the void.

“Peter’s family took my husband under their wing during his Wilbraham years,” Judy Hale, Robert’s wife, said. “Bob went home with Peter for school vacations, and the Lincolns brought Bob along with Peter on college tours and interviews. Bob's life was made so much better because of Peter and his family. They remained lifelong friends until my husband's death.”

Although he had no relation to former English faculty member Roger N. Lincoln (faculty from 1938-1972), Mr. Lincoln did list him among his favorite instructors along with Howe Newell, Phil Shaw and Fred Watts.

Perhaps summing up the opinions of his friends and classmates, the Class of 1955 superlatives list named Mr. Lincoln as “Most Dependable. Says least, thinks most.” Although not known to be loquacious, Mr. Lincoln was nonetheless chosen to deliver an oration on behalf of his fellow students at Commencement.

During a portion of his speech, Mr. Lincoln said: "Wilbraham Academy, we are all grateful. You have given us knowledge, you have opened our minds and eyes to what there is in the world for us; you have given us the experience of living with our neighbors; you have given us countless opportunities for self-advancement. Before these gifts we are humble, but with these tools you have given us, we will try to constantly better ourselves to make the world a better place in which to live.”

Mr. Lincoln attended Wesleyan University and the NYU Graduate School of Business Administration.

He became an investment analyst and manager in New York City, spending most of his career at United States Steel and Carnegie Pension Fund, eventually retiring as its Senior Vice President.

His connection to Wilbraham remained strong, visiting campus often on trips home to visit his mother, attending events and making gifts to the annual fund. But it wasn’t until the early 1990s that his next chapter with WMA really began.

“At that time Peter was a $500-a-year donor,” former Head of School Richard Malley said. “This called attention to him because this was a rather large amount for one of our alumni in those days.”

Mr. Lincoln’s business acumen and knowledge were just what WMA needed at the time, and he was recruited to join the Academy’s strategic planning effort. His work with this committee so impressed the Board of Trustees that Mr. Lincoln was asked to formally join the Board in 1993.

Quickly thereafter he became chair of the Finance Committee, where he was a stickler for detail and a staunch conservative when it came to school finances. He was also patient, articulate, open-minded, rational and determined. Whether Mr. Lincoln knew it or not, these qualities made him the obvious choice to succeed William Griffin ’67W as Chair of the Board when Mr. Griffin stepped down in 1997.

“I can well remember that day when Peter was nominated to be Chair,” Peter Plumb ’61W said. “I was then Chair of the Trustee Committee. Bill Griffin wanted to step down and suddenly we needed a new Chair. We were wondering where to turn when at one point in the discussion someone suggested that Peter leave the room, which he obediently did. The rest of the discussion was quick and easy. We knew that he would make an excellent Chair. Thank goodness he said yes.”

“Unquestionably, Peter Lincoln was the right person at the right time to lead Wilbraham & Monson’s Board of Trustees,” Mr. Malley said. “Peter’s love for his school and his untiring leadership inspired others to become involved and invested. He led by example, contributing generously of his time, talent and financial resources.”

Mr. Lincoln’s leadership on the Board was an echo of his school days. Those who served with him speak of his caring nature, tireless work ethic and devotion to the Academy. He was characteristically quiet, and not an instinctive "salesman" by nature. He struck some as shy. But to believe that was to misread him.

Presiding at Board Meetings, Mr. Lincoln made sure that he understood every issue in its full complexity so that he could articulate a rational position. He worked tirelessly to understand the intricacy of the Academy's financing and budget. However, he also had a willingness to seek outside counsel on complex problems when it was needed. Every Chair faces challenges, and Mr. Lincoln had his share. As questions around enrollment, fundraising and strategic planning swirled, his quiet leadership was critical.

“Peter so seldom made a note during Board meetings,” Mr. Faulkner, a Trustee at the time, said.

“I assumed his memory was flawless and unlimited. He listened carefully and compassionately as well, allowing disparate points of view to be expressed before summarizing the kernels of ideas worth (in his view) pursuing.”

One incredibly important job Mr. Lincoln undertook was that of Chair of the Search Committee, which oversaw the transition of school leadership from Mr. Malley to Rodney J. LaBrecque as Head of School in 2002. Changes in administration are never easy, but Mr. Lincoln was determined that WMA not miss a beat.

“Peter was always a solid supporter for me and often ran interference when I proposed major changes,” Mr. LaBrecque said. “Change the mission of the school to focus on globalization and entrepreneurship. ‘Sure, why not?’ Peter would say. Make major personnel changes throughout the school. ‘Whatever you think will lead to success,’ he would comment. ‘I’ll support you.’

“His wealth of knowledge in crucial areas provided a mountain of insider, factual knowledge that served as a springboard for planning the future of the Academy. I appreciated his dogged service to the school, his sage advice to me and the Board, his wry sense of humor and his smiling face.”

Under Mr. Lincoln’s tenure, enrollment stabilized and the quality of the student body improved.

The financial health of the school improved greatly, when donations from alumni, parents and trustees increased.

For the first time in well over a decade, the Academy was debt-free with a growing endowment.

Many of the school’s most ardent supporters today can trace the rise in their engagement to his tenure as Chair. To say he put WMA on solid footing would be an understatement.

In 2005, having worked tirelessly for eight years to set the school on firm ground, Mr. Lincoln stepped down from the Board and handed the reins over to current Chair Scott Jacobs ’75.

“When Peter handed off the Chair role to me, he became a wise yet humble mentor,” Mr. Jacobs said. “He always made himself available to provide an insight or thought that was invaluable. He would gently remind me when there was something important to pay attention to. All the while, he never made it about himself or his previous administration, it was about helping me and most importantly helping the school.”

Mr. LaBrecque said: “While not a flamboyant leader, throughout his tenure Peter was steadfast in his loyalty and love for the Academy giving inordinately of his time, talent and treasure. One could not ask for a better board member nor Board Chair.”

After stepping off the Board, and having already retired from his business career in 2002, Mr. Lincoln threw himself into other pursuits. His eyesight, which had never been good, didn’t slow him down one bit. He traveled extensively (once spending three weeks traveling the South Pacific visiting Fiji and Easter Island) and often caught up with classmates when doing so.

“We met Peter many times over the years,” Olli Kokkonen ’55W said. “Not only in New York but also in Europe at our summer place north of Helsinki. Peter enjoyed the sauna and swam without hesitation, like a local. We met for the last time in Fort Lauderdale in January 2018 by coincidence.

We had arrived there without knowing of each other’s plans, and celebrated with a good lunch and a relaxed walk afterward.”

Peter loved spending time on Cushing's Island, Maine, with Mr. Plumb, and he often traveled to London to visit his sister. Throughout these years, Mr. Lincoln remained a WMA volunteer, supporter and mentor to Heads of School. Taking the train from New York, he attended reunions, school events and spoke at building dedications. He was a fixture at Board retreats, where his opinion was sought on most all decisions. No trip to New York by current or former WMA leadership was complete without a stop to see him.

Although Mr. Lincoln’s failing health was known to WMA in his final months, the news of his passing in December 2022 still came as a shock, triggering a mixture of sadness and joy for the life he led. The Academy has had the caring and thoughtful service of many alumni and Board Chairs in its 220-year history. Mr. Lincoln will rank among the very best.

“Schools need great teachers everywhere, not just in the classroom, and Peter was an excellent teacher in the realm of school governance,” Mr. Jacobs said. “It’s an area not seen by most, but his guidance was a key part of the success of the last two decades.”

In a final act of dedication, Mr. Lincoln included the Academy in his estate, leaving $1.8 million to the school’s endowment. WMA will be forever in his debt.

PROFILE ON GIVING Debra Pageau ’76

Celebrating a Quarter Century of Support

T

urn to the Donor Lists section of this report and one will see names marked by a small gold bell.

This icon denotes recognition in Wilbraham & Monson Academy’s Bell & Atlas Society for consecutive support of five or more years. The size of these donor’s gifts varies, but their consistency makes them the bedrock of WMA's yearly success. Debra (Elmasian) Pageau ’76, who recently celebrated 25 consecutive years of support, is one such donor.

Ms. Pageau commented that she received so much individual attention from her teachers. “It was this attentiveness and commitment to my success that made such an impact on me,” she said. “That’s why I give back, because I have seen this same dynamic at work year after year.”

Ms. Pageau grew up in the 16 Acres neighborhood of Springfield, Massachusetts. Like so many alumni, her WMA journey began at the behest of her parents, who felt an independent education would best suit her.

“We toured a number of different schools,” she recalled. “MacDuffie and Deerfield Academy, I think.

But I liked WMA the best because of its diversity in students and classes, plus it was close to home.”

Head of School Francis M. Casey personally led Ms. Pageau and her parents’ tour, and she enrolled for her junior year.

It was an interesting time in WMA’s history. The Academy had only recently become “WMA” via the merger of Wilbraham Academy and Monson Academy in 1971. WMA had also returned to coed status, something each academy had been at earlier times in its history. But if the school was experiencing growing pains, they went unnoticed by Ms. Pageau.

“Everything felt perfectly at ease to me, like it had been that way forever,” she said. “I believe the school was roughly three-quarters boys at the time, but it didn’t feel like a ‘transition’ was happening.”

Memories of her teachers and student relationships stand out most vividly to Ms. Pageau.

• Mr. Casey, she said, was “gracious, as was Mr. Labelle, and always had their doors open.”

• Roger N. Lincoln “was good-natured, always had a smile and took such a deep interest in his students.”

• David Deardoff was “caring and sweet, and a phenomenal educator. I learned so much in his English class.”

• Longtime librarian Coralie Gray was “a rock, and very much a mother figure to us.”

Although she did not have Mr. Watts as a teacher, she recalled his ever-present personality and great sense of humor.

“There just seemed to be no prejudice at WMA, not like I experienced at public school,’’ she said.

“Everyone was equal and at home with each other, or it felt that way. It was a family.”

After graduation, Ms. Pageau moved to Waltham, Massachusetts, and entered the workforce.

“I accepted a sales position at a better sportswear shop for women in the Burlington Mall,” she recalled. “I put the work ethic I learned at WMA to good use. Within a year I was promoted to assistant manager, three months later I was manager of the store, and in 2 1/2 years I was managing the Massachusetts and New Hampshire districts.”

After getting married and having a son, Ms. Pageau decided on a career change.

“I wanted to get a job that better meshed with my son’s school schedule,’’ she said. “When I was young, I volunteered at a summer camp for children with special needs. It was truly a rewarding experience that I will always hold close to my heart. I thought about the impact my WMA teachers had on me. I decided to search the opportunities in the special educational services.”

For the next 16 years, Ms. Pageau worked as a para-educator, first in Hudson, New Hampshire, and then Port St. Lucie, Florida. When the need for para-educators in Hudson declined, the school created a special position just for her, so as not to lose her professional expertise and institutional knowledge.

Ms. Pageau retired in 2021.

Today Ms. Pageau lives in Florida but travels to Massachusetts regularly.

“My son Kyle is in Reading (Massachusetts) and my sister Joyce and her husband, Edward, still live in Wilbraham, so I am around often,” she said.

She also keeps up with friends from her WMA school days, including Elizabeth Rodbell ’75 and Francine Ryan ’78. And she hasn’t skipped a year of support to WMA in 25 years.

“I see a better WMA today than when I was a student,’’ Ms. Pageau said. “I appreciate what is happening and how the school is growing with the times while holding on to its core values and mission. It’s diverse and welcoming, and the possibilities for students now are amazing. It's a fundamental pleasure to support WMA.”

PROFILE ON GIVING Stephanie Firely ’09

‘There will never be a time where those four years are not so significant to who I am as a person’

T

he media can often portray high school as an extremely difficult experience full of complex social dynamics and heightened emotions, not to mention intense physical changes.

And although these things can be true for some, Stephanie (Pajak) Firely ’09 explains that, “I never felt that my high school experience looked like the stereotypical high school experience that I saw in the media.”

Rather than cliques, bullying and popular vs. unpopular groups, Mrs. Firely said: “We were all coming through and on our individual paths, but also there supporting each other side by side. Everyone felt accessible. Everyone felt approachable.

“I really look back, and I think about everyone as an individual participant of a community.”

And it was in this community that Mrs. Firely, a Wilbraham native, thrived. She was not only a member of the Bicentennial Scholarship program, now known as Global Scholars, but also a member of Varsity Field Hockey and participated in Track & Field. She traveled to both Taiwan and South America on WMA-led trips, an opportunity she recognizes is not given to most teenagers, and she truly embraced the global environment WMA fosters in all its students.

Although shy and quiet at first, Mrs. Firely credits all of her first year teachers for: “taking the time to lovingly push me out of my comfort zone. It really made the difference, not only in the experience I had as a freshman, but also in the experience I had the rest of my years at WMA because it opened up for me a whole new concept of participating in school and being a good student.”

She recognizes that this skill has made a difference in her collegiate and professional career, and acknowledges that if she went to a larger public high school, she may not have had the same outcome.

“I am someone who has really come to embrace that who we are today is a direct product of every experience that we’ve had and every day we’ve lived prior,’’ she said.

“When I think back to my time at WMA, it's four years of my life and four years of my days. With every passing year, I get a bit older, and it becomes a smaller total proportion of my years, but there will never be a time where those four years are not so significant to who I am as a person. And they matter.”

Because of this, Mrs. Firely has been a consistent donor to the Atlas Fund for the past eight years.

“When I think about finances, and resources more broadly, I think about the things that have made a real big change in who I am, and WMA, and that experience, are just that for me,” she said.

Mrs. Firely is clear on what helps her make the decision - reflection. She explains that through reflection, supporting feels more natural and less like a task or obligation. She suggests this same approach for others who are considering giving back.

“I’m proud of the school it was when I was there, but also what it is today; and any small impact that I can have on everyone who is working to make the community what it is today, I am happy to do it.”

“I would encourage people to take the opportunity to really reflect on what WMA gave them and how it contributed to who they are today and everything that they did after WMA,’’ she said. “Find that special unique reason for you.”

WMA thanks Mrs. Firely for her continued support for almost a decade. Just as WMA had a lasting impact on her, she is, in turn, ensuring its impact on many more students well into the future.

“I just want WMA to continue being its best self.”

PROFILE ON GIVING The Dwyer Family

‘You always need to give back in the ways you can’

W

hen Patrick and Brittany Dwyer’s son Cooper, a gifted student, was in eighth grade, it became clear that he was not being academically challenged by his local public school. The Dwyers undertook a search of a wide variety of private school options before choosing Wilbraham & Monson Academy as the best match for Cooper. Cooper, whose great-grandfather was Freeman Patten ’42W, matriculated at WMA in the fall of 2021.

The combination of academic rigor, other student enrichment options and the sense of community and support at WMA made it simply feel right for the Dwyer family.

Cooper ’25 is happy and excelling in school, and was joined at WMA by his brother Jaxon ’29 at the start of the 2023-2024 academic year.

When asked what is the best part of WMA, Mrs. Dwyer said: “Cooper has found his core friend group, half boarders and half day. He just loves going there. He even goes for breakfast and let me tell you, he is not a morning person. The culture has really embraced him. These kids and teachers are so welcoming. The culture of welcoming and accepting kids for who they are is absolutely wonderful.”

Patrick totally agreed: “Kids are all coming from a different place and everyone is new. In a public school, you know everyone for 12 years, but here everyone is new and so everyone makes new friends. It’s amazing.”

The Dwyers have truly made WMA a family affair through their significant devotion to the Academy in a myriad of ways. Mr. Dwyer jokes that Mrs. Dwyer volunteers for everything - and the joke is not far from the truth, as the Dwyers have been involved with Family Weekend hospitality tents, holiday decorating and the Red & Blue BBQ during the last year.

They are also members of the Parent Leadership Council, which was created in 2019 to bring together like-minded parents who demonstrate their full investment in the WMA experience through both philanthropy and volunteerism.

The group meets regularly with Head of School Brian P. Easler to share their perspective and offer counsel and insight on programs, facilities and new initiatives at the Academy.

One example of the Dwyers sharing expertise was Mr. Dwyer’s involvement in the new dining hall project. His background is in construction and when the Dwyers heard there was going to be an expansion of the facilities, they thought his expertise could be useful.

“You gave us the info about the dining hall construction so we could give feedback,’’ Mr. Dwyer said. “When you are going to expand and make changes to a building, I really think it is important to get input from the people that are going to be using the space. It was great to be involved in the thinking of the project and how it can be paid for.”

The family’s reasons for offering such deep support for the Academy are varied.

PARENT it comes to my kids' education, I feel that the more I get involved, it portrays to my kids that you should LEADERSHIP “When volunteer and help in your surroundings,’’ Mrs. Dwyer said. “I want to send the message to my kids that we are very COUNCIL fortunate in life but you always need to give back in the ways you can. And the way we can is by volunteering.

“We have gotten to know some other families through the PLC. You know, when your kids get to high school they don’t want you hanging around as much, and this was a way for us as parents to know some other families.”

Ultimately, modeling volunteerism for their children and making friends are really only secondary reasons for the Dwyers to be involved in the PLC and Parents Association.

“I love to put faces to names and get to know who is around my kids,” Mrs. Dwyer said. “During the school year, the faculty are seeing my kids more than me so it is really nice to know who those people are. It also helps to have a more open line of communication. I want teachers and staff to know that we are open to helping. The more you are out there, then you get to know people better and communication between parents and school is easier.”

The Dwyer family has found the WMA experience to be fulfilling and rewarding for all of them. Their dedication to the Academy and the positive influence they bring to campus is deeply appreciated by all who encounter them. Truly, their devotion and generosity have impacted WMA in a profoundly positive way.

A conversation with longtime Academy donor

e caught up with Robert Edmunds ’01, a Heritage Society member and former Trustee, to chat about his Wilbraham & Monson Academy experience and why he chose to include the Academy in his estate plan.

WMA: Tell me about your WMA experience. How did it get started?

Edmunds: I was attending MacDuffie (School), which felt like more of a day school at that time, and I was getting lost there. My parents were getting divorced, and my mother thought it might be better if I was closer to home. My dad took care of the pool at WMA, so we knew the Academy pretty well. My mother felt WMA might have more structure. So I came for a year. Then my mother moved to California. She and I looked at schools out there but none of them felt like WMA did, so I stayed. I don't know, at 15 I guess I knew I was in the right place already.

WMA: What do you think made you feel that way?

Edmunds: My parents always encouraged me, and WMA felt like an extension of that. A place where I was celebrated and recognized for who I was. At WMA, everyone had a little corner to stand out for something they were accomplishing. That WMA recognized the smallest accomplishments from even the quietest of students stood out to me. The friendships and connections with students and faculty were like a family. You had this dynamic going on, with people who really cared and looked out for you. I felt connected and supported, which made me want to learn and explore the things I was interested in.

WMA: Sounds like your 15-year-old self made a good call.

Edmunds: Totally. The WMA community changed my life. I did my sophomore and senior year living on campus, so I even got the dorm experience. This is where I first met Mr. Easler, who was in his first year at the Academy and was my dorm parent. I remember being trusted enough to get keys to the theater so I could do stuff in there in the evenings for the productions I was involved in. Because my dad took care of the pool, I knew all the maintenance staff; Joe Salvador and his whole team all knew who I was. I was on the student council and served on the student conduct committee. You learned to interact with people on a whole different level than just being a student sitting in a classroom. I learned so many skills I carry with me to this day.

WMA: Such as?

Edmunds: Well, I’d learned to really write, read deeply and problem-solve. I was taught how to plan, how to think through options and then go do it. I could talk to and appreciate all kinds of people from all over the world. It wasn’t college that “made me.” I only went for a year before I really started working full-time. I finished at night because I just wasn’t challenged enough. I mean, WMA was way harder than college in terms of what I needed to know and was expected to do. Look, I wasn’t the smartest student at WMA, but when I got to Bentley (University) my professors would come up to me and ask, “Where did you go to school?” because I already had down what a lot of others were struggling with. The skills I learned at WMA propelled me in life and my career.

WMA: Is this why you choose to give back as you do?

Edmunds: If I know how much WMA helped me, then how can I go through life, or reach the end of it, and not give something back? How can I make sure that the Academy can carry on with its mission? I’m not a famous person, thankfully. I didn't become a teacher, and I don’t have anything earth-shattering to add to a class discussion. But I’ve been pretty successful in my business, so if my dollars and cents can contribute to the school’s mission then that’s how I can give back.

WMA: Why an estate gift, specifically?

Edmunds: I work with my own clients on this and ask them what their estate plans are. Many will say “Oh, I’m going to leave money to such-and-such organization” but then never write it into their documents, and so the organization misses out. I made sure mine were in order to support WMA, even though I don’t plan on passing anytime soon! The other reason is that, like most people, I can ultimately support WMA at a much higher level, and make a much greater impact, through an estate-planning gift. It's really not hard to do. You just have to do it.

WMA: What do you see in WMA today?

Edmunds: It’s really exciting to see what’s been happening and what is likely to happen next. I believe strongly in giving to organizations that will endure, and WMA is clearly going to outlast any of us.

That makes me feel good. The Academy is meeting young people where they are and providing an education that will make them into the best they can be.

Mr. Edmunds has supported WMA through his service and financial generosity for nearly 25 years. He received the Service to the Academy Award in 2011 and was a Trustee from 2015 - 2017. Mr. Edmunds is a Partner and Branch Manager at Wellesley Private Advisors and has nearly 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. Away from the office, he is an avid sailor, a Freemason at the Joseph Webb Lodge and a member of the Union Club of Boston.

A $50 Million Bequest Campaign Wilbraham & Monson Academy has been a beacon of educational excellence for 220 years, shaping the lives of students and preparing them for a future of leadership, innovation and impact.

As of June 30, 2023, WMA’s endowment had a balance of approximately $11.7M. While up from the prior year, the independent school average across Massachusetts is $103M. WMA’s endowment provides only a small portion of what is needed to keep WMA running each year: academic programs, athletics, arts and everything else that makes WMA so special.

Growing WMA’s endowment is critical to the Academy’s success.

WMA BY THE NUMBERS Financial Overview FY23 July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023

By Patricia Gallagher, Chief Financial Officer Ms. Gallagher joined WMA as Chief Financial Officer in July 2023. Previously at Mount Holyoke College and Olin College of Engineering, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Stonehill College and an MBA from Babson College. Ms. Gallagher is a licensed Certified Public Accountant and a Chartered Global Management Accountant.

Operating income for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2023 (“FY23”) slightly exceeded operating expenses, for an income from operations of approximately $593K (audited). Tuition and fees continue to be the largest revenue source for the Academy, comprising 75% of all operating income for the most recent fiscal year. Like other independent schools, the majority of WMA’s operating expenses are personnel related, with 59% of expenses going toward salaries and benefits.

The audited financial statements for FY23 reported the following sources of revenue and expenses without donor restrictions:

Over time, the Academy’s goal is to grow the endowment, so that it can provide increasing support for the operating budget in perpetuity.
