The LaBrecque Years
REFLECTIONS

I am extremely honored and humbled that much of this magazine is devoted to the “LaBrecque Years.” Shirley and I have enjoyed every minute of our time here. What I want to write about in this reflection is a topic less institutional and more personal, though as I proceed, you will see that in fact everything about which I am writing has bearing on the past 12 years of successes and progress of the Academy. In 1971, after earning a master’s degree in chemical physics from Clark University, I convinced my wife that I should teach for a year or so before returning to finish my Ph.D. I accepted a position at the all-girls’ MacDuffie School teaching physics, chemistry, eighth grade science, running a dorm of 11 girls, and coaching when needed. Shirley thought I was crazy, but her attitude was “anyone can do anything for only a year.” Needless to say, we both fell in love with the prep lifestyle and we began our prep career in earnest from that time onward. I had her full support as we moved through the ranks at Westminster, St. Paul’s School, Milton and Choate. Shirley encouraged me to follow my dream to work in California, knowing it meant she would give up a great position as the Director of Development for Hamden Hall in Hamden, Conn. I founded the upper school at The Harker School in San Jose, Calif. while Shirley continued her career as its Development Director. A year later I worked as the founding head of the start-up Episcopal School of the Peninsula in Foster City. As the Development Director of an elementary Episcopal school, her success was unparalleled as she raised more than $1 million from a parent body of under 100. Five years later, our California experiment completed, we returned to New England and I took the reins of this
fine school. Shirley rolled up her sleeves, so to speak, and proceeded to blaze a path to establish Morrow House as the official hospitality center of the Academy. Throughout 43 years of peripatetic striving, Shirley was my strongest support. Many a day was bleak as often I was charged with making change happen where no one wanted it and often in places where funding was thin to non-existent. She never wavered in being understanding and committed to the cause of the school, whatever that might be at the school of that time.
As I reflect on what she has accomplished in our time at the Academy, I think it is fair to say that she has been an unsung heroine. Her duties, which were all offered voluntarily, were many. Her first task was to head the production of the bicentennial celebratory book Visions that Endure. She coordinated all the events that took place in Morrow House (which were numerous), meaning she was involved in something every week as we made it our business to entertain and develop the Academy’s reputation as one of the better schools in the Pioneer Valley. Often there were circumstances when the weather took a turn for the
worse and we suddenly had house guests for a night or even two. During Board of Trustee meetings we would host members of the Trustees for the duration. We even housed a Thai student for a week when he was “suspended.” Shirley worked with our dining services to plan each dinner or reception at Morrow House, including the setting for the event. No detail was small enough to be lost on her. She followed up with thank you notes to guests as well as staff. She accompanied me on many development related travel assignments all over the world and the country. Contrary to popular perception, these trips were nothing like tourist travel. One trip had us making nine different flights in 13 days, covering six Asian countries. Sleep is an unknown quantity in the algebraic equation of development work. Shirley has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Academy and has brought outside groups to the Academy for flower shows, house tours, garden events, fund raisers and lectures. She, along with Betsy Davison P ’13, was the driving force behind the eminently successful Town of Wilbraham’s 250th gala evening last May, which has led to the return of the senior prom to the WMA campus. That event sparked one letter writer to call the gala “the party of the century.” But more than any of those considerable accomplishments, she has been my most honest critic, telling me the things no one else would. Her sage advice has kept me from making some terrible blunders. She has been a willing foil to my conjectures and crazy ideas. I know the Academy would not be as successful as it has been during the last 12 years had she not been a presence. I am so proud to be her spouse and in leaving WMA it is fitting to give praise where praise is due. Thank you, Shirley, for all you have done, for all you have given, and for all you have achieved.

A Note from the Editor I don’t know that Academy World (AW) has ever featured a Note from the Editor. I’ll admit it feels awkward breaking this silent rule. However, as I am following someone who held this position for 20 years (Mrs. Rita Carey), I felt it was my duty to formally introduce myself to you. My name is Emily Gaylord, I am the Assistant Director of Marketing & Communications for Internal Affairs, and I edit, write for and design AW with the assistance of the wonderful Marketing & Communications department. I live with my husband and two greyhounds in Easthampton, Mass. I felt it was particularly important to address the readers of this magazine now, because we are saying goodbye to someone who has been a global citizen and leader for the WMA community. His leadership has contributed to WMA graduates attending exceptional colleges and universities, joining the workforce, and becoming innovators in their fields. Rodney LaBrecque has served the Academy for 12 years and we are thankful. This issue of AW is dedicated to Mr. LaBrecque. Aparna Sivakumar ’14 attended Johns Hopkins Lead America Program, where she spent 10 days studying pre-medicine in a classroom setting. She also visited various hospitals, including the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins Medical School. She experienced patient simulations and reviewed case studies. “Going to this program was eye-opening for me because it gave me an in-depth look at what it would be like to go into the medical field.”
Historic Walking Tour
Wilbraham & Monson Academy literally opened its doors to the town Sept. 8, allowing a group of 80 visitors to view or tour 11 buildings on campus as part of the Historic Walking Tour along Wilbraham’s Main Street. “It was great to have the 250th historic house tour to include many of the Academy buildings because our place in the town is central,” Head of School Rodney LaBrecque said.

“Being here as the Head of School is what I wanted,” said Mr. Easler, who has worked at WMA since 1998. “I plan to stay here for a very long time. I have great aspirations for the school.” Mr. Easler will take over at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic calendar year for Head of School Rodney LaBrecque, who announced his retirement in December of 2012. Mr. Easler’s vision for WMA will be featured in an upcoming issue of AW.

Kathryn Schmidt ’14 was one of 625 students in the United States selected to participate in the NSLI-Y scholarship program, which provides academic-based exchanges to such countries as China, Korea, Russia and Turkey. “I chose Turkey because they have an important relationship with the U.S., and it serves as a bridge between the east and west,” Kathryn said.

Since picking up the sport of drag racing seven years ago, twins Julia and Mary Sparago ’17 have become two of the best competitors in New England. Julia topped a field of 40 drivers to win the 8-18 age group at the New England Dragway in Epping, N.H., in 2012, and Mary placed second this season.

Matt Naumec ‘15 shot a 2-over par 72 to win the Kingswood Invitational Tournament in May, which serves as the championship for New England prep schools. Matt, who topped a field of 120 golfers, became the first golfer in school history to win a New England title.

Marissa Small-Towns ’14, Anna McCartney ’15 and Shae Clarke ’16 all won gold medals in May at the New England Prep Schools Track Association Division III Track & Field Championship. Marissa easily won the 400-meter race, Anna posted the winning leap in the triple jump, and Shae was the fastest person in the 100-meter field.

Boys’ Lax enjoys turnaround season
John Tierney ’15 set single-season records for goals (68), assists (56) and total points (124) for the Boys’ Lacrosse team in the spring. “Having great teammates around me helped me become better,” said John, who has verbally committed to the University of Massachusetts. “I think that helped me a lot this year.”
“Simply put, in 27 years of coaching youth, high school and prep lacrosse, I’ve never had as fine of a lacrosse player as John Tierney,” Coach Phil Roland said. “In every facet – offense, defense, face-offs, scoring ability, teamwork, passing – John is clearly head and shoulders above anyone else I’ve ever had.”

“We’re thrilled Mustapha was selected as one of the top players in the camp,” WMA Coach Chris Sparks ‘95 said. “It was an amazing opportunity for him. Against his peers he performed very well. To go into that situation, against 30 kids who are so talented, and to have no connection with a travel team or shoe company, he went in there and made himself stand out. I was really proud of him.” Unfortunately, Mustapha suffered an injury at a practice and will be unable to accompany the team for its trip to the FIBA Americas U16 Championships in Uruguay June.
VICTORIOUS Matan Shmerling ’14 won a silver medal for the USA U19 soccer team at the 19th Maccabiah Games, which were held in Israel in July.
“Overall I played pretty well,” P.J. added. “I could have done better at the plate but behind the plate I felt I was close to my best.” P.J.’s best game came in the team’s opener, going 2 for 3 and scoring three runs in the West’s 10-4 victory over Central. The West beat Southeast 6-0 in the final to claim the gold. More importantly for P.J., he drew some interest from college coaches at the Bay State Games, which serves as a premier college showcase. “There were a ton of college coaches there, and from all over the place,” P.J. said. “It’s a very popular event for college coaches. It’s a great place to be seen.You never know who’s watching you.”
“We’re proud of the guys and we’re happy they’ve stayed in the game and we look forward to them having great final years and staying a part of our tradition,” WMA Coach Gary Cook said. “When I look back on these guys, they’re seniors in college and impact players on their teams. To see how well they’ve done as young men and student athletes . . . the connection that started here and they’re doing that in college. They remain an important piece of our program.”

“Playing on an international stage was huge,” Matan explained. “Brazil brought guys who played for club teams, and Canada had some guys with decent speed and skill. Argentina had guys playing semipro. It was a good experience, and playing against guys who will obviously play at the next level was good for us.”

“Winning the gold medal is definitely something I take pride in,” P.J. said. “Usually Western Massachusetts isn’t as highly regarded as some of the other parts of the state in terms of how sports go. But we showed everyone we can play, too.

In 2002, Rodney and Shirley LaBrecque arrived on the Wilbraham & Monson Academy campus with a vision: they wanted to turn a traditional boarding school into something that would reference the traditional prep program while also looking toward the future of prep education, and they immediately set about to do so.
things differently. Rather than trying to play by the rules of other prestigious boarding schools, Rodney wanted to change the game. He recognized that fighting to climb the ladder of boarding school status would result in an Academy defined as a derivative of others. Instead, Rodney stepped off that ladder and set about charting a new and unique path for Wilbraham & Monson Academy.
In the years leading up to the LaBrecques’ arrival, Wilbraham & Monson Academy endured the same national recession and economic challenges faced by other boarding schools. The skilled leadership of Rodney’s predecessor, Dick Malley, guided the Academy through those difficult times and helped make WMA the stable, nurturing school Rodney inherited in 2002. However, the outside world knew little about the Academy, and the world of traditional New England boarding schools was undergoing transition, making it a more competitive and challenging market with each passing day. Now that the Academy stood on solid footing, Rodney was faced with the question: where should we go?
Rodney often lamented how traditional curricula failed to cover the important influence of economics and finance on world events, and well before Thomas L. Friedman’s The World is Flat, Rodney understood the importance of gaining a global perspective. He understood how little exposure students had to the type of creative thinking embodied by the American entrepreneur. In many ways, American schools avoided or discouraged entrepreneurial thinking, despite its role in America’s very creation. Rodney believed these topics were crucial for successful leadership and citizenship in the modern world, and he wanted Wilbraham & Monson Academy to be defined by excellence in each. Supported by the advice and funding of a small group of trustees, alumni, university and business leaders, his vision resulted in the Center for Entrepreneurial and Global Studies, now a hallmark of a WMA education. A first for American high schools, CEGS
As Rodney often discussed with his faculty and Board, Wilbraham & Monson Academy needed to do
not only gives students the expanded education Rodney envisioned, but also created a new ranking for WMA among schools. WMA was quickly becoming a category of one. The results of these progressive programs, along with Rodney’s relentless focus on all aspects of school quality, are remarkable. Some of these results are measurable - SAT scores, admissions interest, and powerful college matriculation have all increased significantly - and WMA’s student body has grown from 315 to nearly 430 during the worst global recession in 80 years. Even more important than the nominal change in our student body is the change in its nature. Veteran faculty member and Dean of Faculty Don Kelly recently commented that this year’s student body is “the most remarkable collection of students I’ve seen during my time at the Academy.” With academic, athletic, artistic and creative talents that certainly rival the best years in the Academy’s long history, today’s students are a credit to the faculty members who have done so much to provide this unique experience. Beyond the student body, Rodney cares as much about supporting the adults on WMA’s campus. He has a tremendous talent for developing exceptional educational leaders.
Unless you’re a student, parent or recent alumnus, you might not have had the privilege of witnessing this remarkable transformation. From the growth in rigor, the unique classes offered within CEGS, the AP program, or merely the chance to interact with peers from 32 other countries, today’s students have opportunities many of us alumni can only envy. The Global Scholars program, the international travel opportunities, and the plethora of speakers and resources brought to campus are examples of initiatives that have simply transformed what it means to be a WMA scholar.
outside world knows little about WMA, and for that, I and every member of the Board of Trustees would like to express an enormous amount of gratitude to the LaBrecques. It has been an unbelievable privilege to work with Rodney who, along with Shirley’s wise counsel, has taught the entire Board of Trustees much about what it takes to lead a preeminent institution. What’s more, they are great friends and exceptional people whose frequent company will be sorely missed. Next July, the LaBrecques will head off to a busy retirement at their home in Rhode Island, but their impact on campus will be seen and felt every hour of every day for generations to come.

Finally, Rodney’s stewardship has resulted in many intangibles, like strong Titan pride on the athletic fields and courts and the looks of respect from visiting teams and guests on campus. Among the many things Rodney has brought to the WMA community, pride and respect may be the most significant. That respect has come from the remarkable transformation of the physical campus, from a faculty
that rivals any school in New England, from distinguished programming and curricula, and from the talented group of students drawn to the globally attuned school. Rodney’s leadership in each of these areas has been transformational.
Rodney would be the first to say that much remains to be done on campus, but his vision and leadership have brought together the many alumni, parents, and friends of WMA to provide the resources needed to affect these changes. It is now each of our responsibility to carry forward this momentum, and I can assure you he’ll be watching to see how we do. No longer is it fair to say that the

WMA has also seen many physical changes under Rodney’s leadership. If you haven’t seen the campus recently, you’ve missed a lot. Building a new athletic center, the introduction of the Mark R. Shenkman Trading Center and Shenkman Admission House, upgrades to all athletic fields but Winchester, construction of a multipurpose artificial turf field, a regulation track, nine new tennis courts, a new student center, a modern dining hall, four additional faculty homes, and maintenance facilities (unglamorous but incredibly important), and a general sprucing up of the entire campus have created a beautiful place for students to call home. Just recently we used for the first time in the matriculation ceremony the LaBrecque Academic Gate: an impressive new entrance on Main Street. Many in the Town of Wilbraham have commented on how these improvements have added to the beauty and pride of the entire community.

Reflections on a Cambodian Adventure Photo by Sarah Goolishian ’13
One of my favorite stops was PSE (Pour Un Sourire D’Enfant), a French NGO designed to educate impoverished children through English classes and vocational training. Upon arrival at PSE, we were assigned to tables of elementary students. Many did not know English, so communication between Americans and the Cambodian children was difficult. At my table an 11 yearold girl named Karoana spoke French and was able to introduce me to the surrounding children as well as teach me a few traditional Cambodian children’s games (which I lost!). One of the most exciting and memorable parts of our trip, for me, was our cyclo tour through the streets of Phnom Penh, where the drivers expertly maneuvered around oncoming cars, buses, and motorcycles. It was on this tour that I realized the beauty of the city and the kindness of its people; the driver offered me his hat to wear to protect me from the sun.

The work they do for children in Cambodia is some of the most inspiring and needed I have ever seen. Yesterday, the group took a wet and choppy ride to Rabbit Island in the Gulf of Thailand. We donned orange ponchos and braved rough waters to access the island’s beach. Though at times I worried about capsizing, the ride was enjoyable and the ocean spray refreshing!

On the fourth day of our trip, we visited A New Hope, an orphanage for children with HIV/AIDS. The amount of good the founders, Kathy and John, have brought to thousands of children is astounding. The children were thrilled to see us and greeted us with hugs and smiles. The children were cheerful, warm, and clearly loved. Near the end of our visit, we broke up into stations and played games with the kids. Two other girls and I were helping at the freeze dance station, which, despite my losing every single round, was incredibly fun for me and the kids. From the temples to the cities, to the rice paddies, Cambodia is the most beautiful country I have been to so far.

Cambodia has been a whirlwind, from exploring ancient temples and palaces, to respectfully avoiding unearthed skulls and clothing scraps in the Choung Ek killing fields, where the Khmer Rouge massacred over 9,000 Cambodians.
We also visited an orphanage run by an American couple for children afflicted with AIDS. No other Cambodian orphanages will

Allen Hsiao, Mathematics, Science I grew up in a home that combined the American way of life with the old culture of my parents. Their emigration from China in 1948 was not planned but circumstances at home changed as they travelled on business; they were forced to assimilate into a new culture and make decisions that would affect our family and those they left behind.

Nearly 100 years ago, as a young boy, my father left his ‘permanent home’ to go to Shanghai to begin his formal education. He held in his heart the belief that ‘home’ would remain where he spent his childhood. My father wrote in his autobiography we should reconnect with our roots, stating several times that, “the leaves always fall to the foot of the tree.”

“I am Hsiao. I am your cousin! We have been waiting for your return!” With those words I was reunited with my family. The moment of the reunion was as emotional as it was dramatic. For 33 years, my cousins have been waiting for our return to our ‘true’ home in China. Each moment we spent together this summer seemed to melt away years of absence, and the comfort of family togetherness made our visit meaningful and fulfilling. As fate foretells our life’s mission, I now teach young Chinese students leaving their homes just as my father did. Together, my students and I will learn to integrate America’s culture into our own as we learn to integrate our ‘Chinese roots’ into the American culture.
My family and I chose Paris, France for many reasons. First, I have done a considerable amount of traveling over the last few years and my wife has graciously stayed home with the children, which has enabled me to have experiences I never could have had otherwise. It was time to give back to her and take her somewhere we have always talked about visiting. Second, neither she nor my children have ever traveled out of the country before, and Paris seemed a perfect first destination for international travel. It is one of the world’s great cities, and its culture is just different enough from our own to make it a solid learning experience. Last, but certainly not least, I have spent time in both Vietnam and Cambodia, two countries that were once under French rule. Having seen the crumbling, but beautiful, colonial architecture in these countries, I felt as though it was time to see the source. Although it was a very difficult trip (as any trip with three small children is apt to be), it was also immensely rewarding. The entire family got to practice French language skills, learn the ins-and-outs of the Paris Metro system (my son became a pro), and interact with not only French people, but also people from all over Europe. In my nine years at WMA, I have discovered what I think is the purpose of travel: to create within ourselves a sense of awe and humility. This trip has definitely done this for every member of my family (perhaps even in our one-year-old), but more importantly, it has made each of us hungry for the next opportunity to go out and experience the world.

The Hubbard Grant was established by Lev & Catee Hubbard to give faculty the opportunity to travel in hopes that global experience would contribute to innovative ideas in the classroom.
As someone who has always loved the ocean, along with being inspired by Fabien Cousteau’s lecture at the Academy’s World of Water Conference last spring, I was very interested in taking my trip to a country where my family and I could expose our three children to the beauty and importance of the ocean and its incredible sea life. We found that the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas would allow us to explore the ocean, view and learn more about the incredible sea life in the world’s largest aquarium, spend time being active in the water park, and learn more about the people of the Bahamas. We were all awestruck with the amazing sea life we saw in the many giant aquariums on the resort, which included an 11-foot manta ray, moray eels, sea turtles and various sharks. Highlights of the trip for me were snorkeling with my two daughters and a glass bottom boat trip to a nearby reef. After the tour, we were happy to make a contribution to “The Blue Project,” which was founded to help rescue the Bahamas’ endangered reefs. The Bahamian people we encountered were very happy and kind-hearted. We learned about the Junkanoo tradition, which is a festive street parade with African dance, loud music and bright costumes. We were lucky enough to see a Junkanoo parade our first night in the Bahamas. I came away from the Bahamas with an even greater appreciation for the oceans and our relationship with nature. In my Freshmen Foundations class, I plan to emphasize the importance and responsibility we have to live in a way that will sustain our environment for generations to come, and include Cousteau’s message that our children are the ones who will make these positive changes happen. I have a better understanding and appreciation of Bahamian people and their culture as well, which will help me relate to our Bahamian students at WMA. I even learned a Bahamian game to play in Physical Education class called Rounders.
COSTA RICA

Costa Rica is a nation without an army, yet it ranks number one out of 151 nations in the Happy Planet Index and the life expectancy average is higher than in the U.S. I was curious what such a place looked like. What I discovered was a place that spoke to my senses through a vast array of natural life and beauty. The country’s geography is magnificent with mangroves, rain forests, oceans and volcanoes. My family and I stayed mainly on the Pacific side. Although dangerous due to strong under currents, the beaches are truly beautiful and visibly unspoiled. Among a variety of birds, bright blue herons, old and young, populate the waters. Howler monkeys climbed above us. We also traveled inland to see Arenal, one of the many active volcanoes rising above the rain forest. One way to see the rain forest is to see it from above or in the canopy. Suspended over 100 feet above the rain forest floor, we “zipped” over and through the rain forest, affording amazing views of the terrain while being close to exotic birds, butterflies and plants. Being in Costa Rica is like being in a world of butterflies. The giant spiders and their proportionate webs at our hotel were left intact by staff and visitors, which was a small demonstration of respect for nature and life. In this small example, things seem to coexist without major conflict. “Pura Vida” translates as pure life, or “full of life,” which seems to capture the essence of my experience in Costa Rica.

Dear Family and Friends of Wilbraham & Monson Academy,
Head of School, I will continue to serve until June of 2014.
After working in independent schools for the last 42 years, half of them as a school administrator and 12 of them as the Head of this great Academy, I, along with Shirley, have decided that it is time to pass the torch of leadership to another. I have loved every minute of my time at the school and have often thought my entire career was spent in preparation for this headship. I know that there is never a perfect time at which to make a change in leadership. In order to ensure a smooth transition to the new
This decision was particularly difficult because I feel the Academy is entering into a great period of renaissance, making exciting progress in many areas of school life. The maturing of the Center for Entrepreneurial and Global Studies and the integration of our school mission into all facets of our program have brought the Academy national and global recognition. We are gaining a strong reputation in areas such as academic rigor, athletic prowess, residential life quality, and study-travel
variety and uniqueness. In fact, we are at one of the strongest junctures in our entire 208year history. Our enrollment is the largest in recent memory. Our endowment has grown 200% during the last 10 years. Admission to the nation’s select colleges is now a given at WMA. Our facilities and fields are the match of almost any school. Most importantly, there is an irrepressible pride of place that permeates every facet of the school. Everyone who works here understands they are making history and the education they provide is excellent and forward thinking.

Yet, there are so many new challenges outside of the Academy I would like to tackle in the final portion of my life. My editors have waited long, but patiently, for the second edition of my book on department leadership. I have longed to return to the seminar circuit. There are books to savor and places to explore. While stepping down now is very difficult, it is the correct decision. There are numerous people to thank for all they have done to further the success of the school, but no one more so than my wife, Shirley. Her work as the spouse of the Head of

“Get used to hard work,” stated Andrea Stanley ’93 when asked what advice she would give aspiring entrepreneurs at WMA. “Learn new things and don’t fear failure or making mistakes.” This advice comes first hand. Andrea owns Valley Malt in Hadley, Mass. with her husband Christian. The maltery (where grain is turned into malt for beer) opened in 2010 and has seen great success. “We wanted to make a brewery using natural, local ingredients and discovered there weren’t any. It’s become a commodity people get from thousands of miles away. Our priority shifted, we saw a niche and we filled it,” she explained. “WMA taught me to be a learner, which is so valuable. I was never intimidated to learn an entirely new set of skills. The teachers made learning fun.”

After WMA Andrea attended Emerson College for two years before landing at Westfield State where she studied education and psychology. Her first career was social work, and she worked at the Shriners Hospital for five years, where she developed a vocational rehabilitation program. The program assisted handicapped children in understanding and discovering educational and career paths that were accessible to them. “I began to think like an entrepreneur there, understanding the big picture and the breadth of tasks involved in a business.”

Though a small business, it is highly in demand. “I like that we’re small, that we’re artisanal.” Andrea also noted that the business helps farmers in that it gives them a product to produce, and breweries in that it gives them an exceptional, local ingredient. The hardest part was very practical. Dominic, who played baseball for Coach Joe Mazeika ’73 at WMA, was hired as an Assistant General Manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers in early-September. “For me it’s a dream come true,” Dominic said. “And for what it’s worth, and I told Mr. Mazeika this the other day, as crazy as it sounds, I owe it to people at the Academy. I really do. My college experience was OK, but if I could go back to the Academy I would in a heartbeat. I took a lot of things for granted while I was there, but now I look back on it and it was the best thing that ever happened to me.” Dominic worked as a scout for the San Francisco Giants 2006-2013, with the team winning World Series titles in 2010 and 2012. One of his friends was involved in the new ownership that bought the Dodgers in May of 2012, which included NBA great Magic Johnson. Dominic was hired during the summer of 2013 when the Dodgers were on their way to one of the

The decisions on the amateur side take longer to play out, but on the pro side a player can be with the Red Sox one day and the next day that player can be playing for the Dodgers. That’s a very good situation.” Dominic was in a bad situation entering high school. The school he planned to attend didn’t offer the support for his learning disability. However, his cousin, Christopher, was attending WMA. Dominic came for a tour, felt comfortable, and he was accepted into the Academy. He played football, hockey and baseball. He’s stayed in contact with Mr. Mazeika since graduating from WMA.
“For me, playing for Coach Mazeika was like playing for Vince Lombardi,” said Dominic, who played three seasons of baseball while majoring in economics and engineering at Hofstra University following WMA. “I owe so much to Coach Mazeika, not only from a baseball standpoint but also for understanding growing up and how to handle myself. He had dignity. I see so many coaches while scouting that just aren’t good role models for kids. But regardless of the situation, Coach Mazeika was always a dignified human being first. He was always the bigger person. “The Academy, for me, was a great place. I matured there late but I had enough role models around. Mr. Mazeika, Mr. (Don) Kelly, Mr. (Phil) Cardone: all taught me what men were supposed to be like. Having those people as role models, as much of a pain as I was when I was there, helps me now. When I’m in certain situations I think of how would Mr. Kelly handle it or how would Mr. Mazeika handle it.” Dominic is married and has a daughter.

However, the values he learned at the Academy and the people who served as his role models have led Dominic to what he calls “a dream come true.”

f the adage “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth” holds any truth, the Wilbraham & Monson Academy community is paying its room and board far in advance.

Case in point, Haiti, a Caribbean country that shares an island with the Dominican Republic. It’s about a three-hour plane ride for our WMA community members who traveled there; about the same amount of time a Haitian child will walk to access water for his or her family.

On March 7, 2013, 10 WMA students and four chaperones traveled to Haiti’s capital, Port Au Prince. “When we emerged from the airport it was industrial, with lots of people and businesses,” explained Carlee D’Amato, WMA Associate Director of Admission and first-time Haiti trip chaperone. “On the way to the house we saw small villages and homes that were made out of tarps, with trash everywhere. We started to get an idea of what was real for these people.” The group traveled by bus to the village of Montrouis, where it would stay for the next seven days in a Christian mission house run
by Life Connection Mission. The gated residence where the travelers would spend nights, and free time, impressed Ashley Imbriano ’14. “We stayed in a beautiful complex on the beach and enjoyed a lot of Haiti’s natural beauty,” Ashley shared. “Electricity and water only worked when it was turned on as needed. We had our own living quarters. It was a mansion compared to what people were living in,” added Ms. D’Amato. “We were very happy.” Director of Admission and chaperone Chris Sparks ’95 has been going to Haiti for several years. “It’s amazing to see people who don’t have anything be so joyful. I think that’s what attracts me, and anyone who goes there to help, because they are so appreciative of the smallest things. “The biggest challenge coming back my first time was how to relate that culture
with our culture, where nothing is good enough and we’re always trying to get the newest cars and biggest house. But that doesn’t drive them; it’s family and culture.” The first time Mr. Sparks traveled to Haiti was before the historic earthquake of 2010. He felt people were content with their situation: 80% unemployment, living in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, relying on family in the states for money, and realizing nothing was going to change. “I think the earthquake was such a devastating thing. There are still 300,000 people living in tents. But also there has been a lot of good that’s come out of it,” said Mr. Sparks. “There’s more funding going into the country. I saw a ton of construction going on there. Education is becoming more of a priority. Because of that people have more hope for change.” Kristin Reeves ’14 and Peter Nagle ’14 took the service adage one step further and literally paid a family’s rent for a year. Kristin’s family and Peter’s family also sponsor two children.
The many servicerelated tasks the group completed include: moved cinderblocks and painted part of a school building that is also the church on Sundays; portioned, packed and delivered rice, beans, oil and water to the poor; assisted doctors in the medical center by filling prescriptions and suturing wounds; visited an orphanage to spend time with the children; and did a beach cleanup. Aside from the service portion of the trip, there are other ways in which help is provided through donations.
Ashley, who has studied one of Haiti’s official languages, French, since seventh grade, would like to return to Haiti some day. “When my parents ask where I want to go on vacation, I say ‘Haiti!’ I loved it there so much,” she said. “I would even spend a summer there or maybe do a gap year there.”

Aparna Sivakumar ’14 enjoyed spending time with the children. “I really liked the people in general; just the way they were accepting and loving,” said Aparna. “They were so quick to accept us and really appreciated every little thing we did. It was really rewarding.”
Mr. Sparks explained that at the end of the school year, when boarders are moving out, WMA collects unwanted clothing. Any given year WMA brings 30-35 bags of clothing to Haiti along with toiletries. “When we get there, we always try to buy goats, paint, rice and oil,” Mr. Sparks said. “If we paint we’ll hire 10 or so workers to help put money back into their economy. If

“They were living in the ruins of an abandoned, secluded building,” Kristin explained. “Eight kids, their mother and their aunt were living there with a blue tarp covering them as a roof. We helped them move their one truckload of belongings to a new home where they have better living conditions and neighbors.”
Kristin, who wants to go into international relations and eventually work for the United Nations, would like to incorporate service in her future. “I’ve been tossing around the idea of entering the Peace Corps after college and before grad school. I’d like to be able to travel and help people at the same time.”

On April 5, 2013 WMA students and staff donned their Academy blazers and flooded the Greenhalgh gymnasium to hear Fabien Cousteau, ocean explorer and grandson of famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, speak. Jacques Cousteau was the co-inventor of the regulator, or “Aqualung,” the first open circuit, self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA). Jacques Cousteau’s life as an oceanographer was a learning process; when he was a scuba diver there were no wetsuits and he did not have the same technological advances scuba divers have now. Fabien Cousteau’s speech emphasized the effects humans are having on the planet. “The best thing we do as humans is eat things” pointed out Cousteau. He said humans have already consumed 60% of the total fish numbers. He went on to impress upon the audience that the plastic bottles people use daily for an average of 30 minutes will last for 500 years in a landfill, and the oil from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico is likely to remain for 30 years. Mr. Cousteau has already started his work to restore the planet with his foundation Plant A Fish, based on the idea that you can plant trees but actively restoring the fish population is just as important. He also continued that everyone, even people at Wilbraham & Monson Academy, can get involved through advocacy, conservation and restoration. When asked why he came to speak with WMA, Mr. Cousteau first replied with his bright humor “because they are awesome.” But joking aside, he answered, “This audience already has the tools to address the issue: education. It’s a rare and valuable privilege and it gives them opportunity. The students here are much better equipped to be stewards of our Jessica climate than we have been. It is Smith ’14 about the young people making things happen, change, creating a revolution. The students embody future. They are the ones that make better decisions.”
Steven Ragnauth ’12 wrote to the Academy about his adventure in Jordan last summer: This was the second year that I’ve gone to Jordan for the Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) at King’s Academy in Madaba (the first year I went with WMA). I taught technology classes to 6th, 7th and 8th grade Jordanian students in the program again this year and it was another rewarding experience. For the first two weeks, the teachers and counselors taught classes in the morning to the kids, and then had sports and activities in the afternoon. All of our meals were sit-down meals and the environment reminded me much of WMA. I celebrated my birthday, July 3, in Jordan with another WMA Alumna, Jeanette Viens. The kids sang Happy Birthday to us from the moment we stepped foot into the dining hall for breakfast until we went to bed that night. To top it all off, the teachers and counselors got us cake on our post SEP retreat at dinner the next day. The group of teachers and counselors this year all became very close friends and that made this trip absolutely unbelievable. I was able to see friends I met last year in the program again and I met several new friends that I will have for a lifetime.
Teresa Kennedy ’12 studies Quechua in Peru Traveling abroad was common for Teresa Kennedy ’12 while she attended Wilbraham & Monson Academy. She traveled to India, Thailand, Cambodia,Vietnam, Haiti and the Amazon River in Brazil as a student at the Academy.
“I took Quechua at Notre Dame for a class,” said Teresa, who graduated from WMA with highest honors. “I really liked it and wanted to learn more.” After enrolling in the Quechua Summer Language Fellowship Program, she moved in with a host family in Cusco, Peru. She attended classes five days a week for four hours, where she learned about the Quechua language and Peruvian culture.

As part of a scholarship program at the University of Notre Dame, Teresa spent seven weeks studying Quechua, an indigenous language dating back to the Inca Empire and spoken by people living in and around the Andes.

IMPROVEMENTS at WMA The LaBrecque Academic Gate was finished in time for the 2013 Commencement Ceremonies. The gate, donated by an anonymous member of the Monson Class of 1961, was erected in honor of Head of School Rodney LaBrecque and his service to the school. New students enter through the gate during matriculation and seniors leave through it as part of the commencement exercises. Long-time supporter of the Springfield Public Forum, WMA will move forward in 2013 as its presenting sponsor. Free to the public and with world class speakers accessible to all, the Springfield Public Forum provides an experience and service that few other cities can match.
The greenhouse that was donated by Joseph and Katherine Hickson, parents of Veronica “Nika” Hickson ’12, will be the home of an exciting program this winter. The environmental club will be creating and nurturing a winter garden in the greenhouse to serve as a respite from the cold New England winter and as an educational tool.

Prom returns to the dining hall. For the first time in years the prom was hosted in a completely transformed dining hall in 2013. Students were able to have a safe prom in a beautiful venue right on campus, something many alumni will remember fondly.

Department Spotlight Deserving of an Apple: Math at WMA By: Emily Gaylord, Asst. Director of Marketing & Communications
T
here is something special about the Mathematics Department at WMA. The students love the teachers, the teachers are respected by fellow faculty, and the test scores deliver. While the department follows a traditional model for math coursework, Department Head Mark Fischer explains that this model works because the department members understand how fluid the subject is.

“I’m proud of the math department. There is a certain amount of review of other math subjects in each course. We understand that a geometry course has to include some algebra so that students are prepared the following year.”

Mr. Fischer also noted that the department is exceptional at recognizing student needs. “If a student comes to us needing a practical base for mathematics we

“Students also get a lot of practice for the college setting,” explained Mr. Fischer. “They understand that office hours are a good thing and take advantage of them. It sets them up to be successful in college.”
Equations and Functions that provide a base for mathematical knowledge, to post-AP Calculus courses that are taught at the sophomore and junior year college level.
Learning isn’t just for the students. The teachers in the mathematics department are encouraged to take advantage of professional development opportunities. “This past year alone we had two teachers (John Lombard and Donna Barone) attend the Philips Exeter Math, Science and Technology Conference, Nunzio Bruno attended an AP Statistics Workshop, and I, for the third year, graded AP Calculus exams in Kansas City. We also had the entire department take a three-day workshop on the TI-Nspire calculators.” Mr. Fischer explained that grading AP Calculus exams gives him enormous insight into the exam, the curriculum and allows him to collaborate with faculty across the country. “It’s nerd central,” he joked. But on a serious note, something about the math department just clicks. Nerd-central or not, the students leave challenged and prepared for college, and that deserves an apple.

RUSSELL DINKINS ’09 Racing Toward Success
Along with his three Ivy League track & field records and an NCAA title, Russell graduated in May from Princeton University as a recipient of the prestigious Spirit of Princeton Award. “Winning the Spirit of Princeton Award was a tremendous honor, especially given the award’s prestige,” Russell said. “To have your contributions to campus, however grandiose or insignificant they may seem, recognized and appreciated by a committee of extremely accomplished peers and faculty meant a lot to me. I was truly humbled by the honor.” Russell majored in Sociology and minored in Urban Studies and Environmental Studies. As great as he was in the classroom and on campus, Russell was at his best on the track. The three-time collegiate All-American won five Ivy League titles and set five records at Princeton. His highlight came in indoor track his senior year when he ran on the NCAA Division I championship distance medley relay team. “It was a privilege and a pleasure representing Princeton and the Ivy League as a whole as a track and field athlete,” Russell said. “I was fortunate to have enjoyed one of the most successful track &
“However, my journey was not without its shortcomings. There were many moments where success seemed improbable, whether it was due to injury or a string of poor performances. Overcoming many of the mental and physical challenges I faced over the years really made the eventual victory that much more special. I cannot, soley though, take the credit for the victories that have been won as everyone from my coaches to my mom to my physical therapist had a hand in making victory possible.” Russell, a native of Philadelphia, said the base and support he received during his four years at the Academy were instrumental in his successes at Princeton. “Wilbraham & Monson definitely prepared me for Princeton, especially in terms of writing standards,” said Russell, who also performed in plays and mosaic harmony during his WMA days. “The instruction I received, from learning the Billy Bunker Essay in ninth grade all the way to AP English my senior year, when we were critically analyzing literary works. All those different skills helped me write at the collegiate level and prepared me to move to the next step. “I can’t say how grateful I am for having the experience to attend Wilbraham & Monson Academy.”

From the Commencement tribute: ‘‘Deb came to the Academy in 1986 with a very impressive resume that included previous teaching stints at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., St. Mark’s School and Hotchkiss. At the Academy Deb has been a dormitory parent in Smith Hall. She has coached Water Polo and Instructional Tennis, and she has been the Head Coach of the Varsity Rifle Team since guns were invented. She has been the chair of the Science Department and has taught Biology, AP Biology, Environmental Science and AP Environmental Science. In fact, it was Deb who introduced Environmental Science into the WMA curriculum.’’

John Best has been living and working in the Philippines for the last 20 years with his partner John Silva. He has been writing books and articles, and editing and working for a historical photo archive in Manila. He looks forward to retiring soon and more travel around South and Southeast Asia.

Joseph W. Mazeika III’s son, Patrick, was among 109 total players named to the 2013 Freshman All-America Team. Patrick, who was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year in addition to being a First Team AllConference selection at first base, was one of just three first basemen named to the team. He finished his first season at Stetson with a .382 average to go with three homers, 11 doubles and 33 RBI.

David Lyman will be a guest coach during the WMA Riflery Team tryouts this year. Dave owns Blue Trail Rifle Range in Wallingford, CT where the WMA Riflery Team will compete a few times. Dave is the 1980 and 1981 National Civilian Rifle Champion and has over 36 years of competitive coaching experience. He welcomes any of the old WMA shooters to stop by the range and say hi.

Judson Smith works for the Golf Channel in Orlando, Fla. and has recently been promoted to Manager of Golf Media Sales Planning. Judd helps manage the national commercial advertising spots that viewers see on the Golf Channel and the ads that air during PGA golf tournament coverage on NBC TV. He works at Rockefeller Plaza for NBC Universal and NBC Sports. Judd, his wife Liz and their three year old daughter live in the Township of Washington in northern New Jersey. Judd and Liz are expecting twins.

Mark Robbins has been working as a geochemistry research associate with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at a research site in Rifle, Colo. He will begin a Ph.D. program in geochemistry in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan in the fall. Since 2010, Stephanie Smith has been working in Center City, Philadelphia at The American College of Radiology. This past year Stephanie was promoted to the Research Associate position and now oversees data and research for five international medical studies related to the heart, lung cancer, gynecological cancer and lymphoma. Stephanie is an active member of the 151-year-old Union League of Philadelphia and has been elected to the Leadership Councils for the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Red Cross and also the Liberty USO. She was married in September to fellow University of New Hampshire graduate Garret Desjardins.

Samuel Bulfinch Greene received a B.A from Wheaton College and certification in Graphic & Web Design from Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts. In 2011, Sam founded 1751 Web Design in Cambridge, Mass. From that point on he has been collaborating with professors and graduates from B.U., Harvard and other Boston-based institutions. Jeff Nowak works for the Department of State in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere affairs. He works with foreign aid and public diplomacy throughout the region. He was married in October in Alexandria,Va. to Caitlin Schettino, whom he met in college.

Sarah Richard is working for CTIA The Wireless Association, in its Regulatory Affairs Department. Celebrating three years of being cancer-free in 2013, Sarah participated in the Washington, D.C. Marine Corps 10K in partnership with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training on Oct. 27. Alexander Williamson is currently a Configuration Analyst at L-3 Communications - National Security Solutions - STRATIS, located in Reston, Va. Marc Bourgeois is in a Ph.D. program at the University of Arizona for Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. He graduated from Northwestern in June with honors and a triple major: Integrated Science, Physics and Math.
Nickolas Dalton is finishing his Sports and Exercise Science Degree at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He was recently hired to the University High School coaching staff under Don Stark as a varsity tight end and JV football coach. University High School is coming off a 2012 Class 8A Florida State District Championship for Central Florida. Along with school and coaching, Nick is also playing his third season as wide receiver for the Orlando, Rattlers, a semi-pro team in the SEFL. Their combined record during his three years for the Rattlers is 27-9 with two division crowns. Jermaine Ubert Duval Boswell is a student at Oakwood University who will be graduating in the spring of 2014 with a degree in Accounting. He is the son of Ubert Boswell, a dedicated employee at the Academy, and Paulette Boswell. Jermaine has a passion for music and entrepreneurship. When he is not in class he spends his time playing at local churches and working on his company, LifeTriage. LifeTriage is a new social-media outlet that offers a one-of-a-kind experience where people help one another attain knowledge and the necessary skills to reach their maximum professional potential. It does so by providing an avenue for communication between professionals and like-minded individuals in similar occupational focuses; individuals seeking to be a part of a productive, supportive and healthy environment while pursuing their passion.

Caitlin Mitchell started working at Neathawk, Dubuque & Packett, an advertising agency, the Monday after her graduation from Roanoke College. After graduating with a degree in English & Education she was hired as a Creative Coordinator, but was quickly promoted to Assistant Account Executive.

Victoria C. Mordasky has been chosen to participate in Roger Williams University’s “Student Academic Showcase and Honors 2013,” sharing the research she did in Brazil. Steff Robbins, a junior at Boston College, spent a semester studying international relations in Geneva, Switzerland. On a ski trip to Verbier in the Swiss Alps, Steff cavorted in the snow with Frida, a local celebrity.

REFLECTIONS
By Head of School Rodney LaBrecque
I am extremely honored and humbled that much of this magazine is devoted to the “LaBrecque Years.” Shirley and I have enjoyed every minute of our time here. What I want to write about in this reflection is a topic less institutional and more personal, though as I proceed, you will see that in fact everything about which I am writing has bearing on the past 12 years of successes and progress of the Academy. In 1971, after earning a master’s degree in chemical physics from Clark University, I convinced my wife that I should teach for a year or so before returning to finish my Ph.D. I accepted a position at the all-girls’ MacDuffie School teaching physics, chemistry, eighth grade science, running a dorm of 11 girls, and coaching when needed. Shirley thought I was crazy, but her attitude was “anyone can do anything for only a year.” Needless to say, we both fell in love with the prep lifestyle and we began our prep career in earnest from that time onward. I had her full support as we moved through the ranks at Westminster, St. Paul’s School, Milton and Choate. Shirley encouraged me to follow my dream to work in California, knowing it meant she would give up a great position as the Director of Development for Hamden Hall in Hamden, Conn. I founded the upper school at The Harker School in San Jose, Calif. while Shirley continued her career as its Development Director. A year later I worked as the founding head of the start-up Episcopal School of the Peninsula in Foster City. As the Development Director of an elementary Episcopal school, her success was unparalleled as she raised more than $1 million from a parent body of under 100. Five years later, our California experiment completed, we returned to New England and I took the reins of this
fine school. Shirley rolled up her sleeves, so to speak, and proceeded to blaze a path to establish Morrow House as the official hospitality center of the Academy. Throughout 43 years of peripatetic striving, Shirley was my strongest support. Many a day was bleak as often I was charged with making change happen where no one wanted it and often in places where funding was thin to non-existent. She never wavered in being understanding and committed to the cause of the school, whatever that might be at the school of that time.
As I reflect on what she has accomplished in our time at the Academy, I think it is fair to say that she has been an unsung heroine. Her duties, which were all offered voluntarily, were many. Her first task was to head the production of the bicentennial celebratory book Visions that Endure. She coordinated all the events that took place in Morrow House (which were numerous), meaning she was involved in something every week as we made it our business to entertain and develop the Academy’s reputation as one of the better schools in the Pioneer Valley. Often there were circumstances when the weather took a turn for the
worse and we suddenly had house guests for a night or even two. During Board of Trustee meetings we would host members of the Trustees for the duration. We even housed a Thai student for a week when he was “suspended.” Shirley worked with our dining services to plan each dinner or reception at Morrow House, including the setting for the event. No detail was small enough to be lost on her. She followed up with thank you notes to guests as well as staff. She accompanied me on many development related travel assignments all over the world and the country. Contrary to popular perception, these trips were nothing like tourist travel. One trip had us making nine different flights in 13 days, covering six Asian countries. Sleep is an unknown quantity in the algebraic equation of development work. Shirley has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Academy and has brought outside groups to the Academy for flower shows, house tours, garden events, fund raisers and lectures. She, along with Betsy Davison P ’13, was the driving force behind the eminently successful Town of Wilbraham’s 250th gala evening last May, which has led to the return of the senior prom to the WMA campus. That event sparked one letter writer to call the gala “the party of the century.” But more than any of those considerable accomplishments, she has been my most honest critic, telling me the things no one else would. Her sage advice has kept me from making some terrible blunders. She has been a willing foil to my conjectures and crazy ideas. I know the Academy would not be as successful as it has been during the last 12 years had she not been a presence. I am so proud to be her spouse and in leaving WMA it is fitting to give praise where praise is due. Thank you, Shirley, for all you have done, for all you have given, and for all you have achieved.
Ginny Knapp: The Reason You were Able to Read this Magazine
The World Ahead For nearly 20 years, alumni parent and current Trustee Ginny Knapp has been helping the Academy by donating direct mail services through her company, Andrew Associates. She has not only provided terrific service, but her generosity has enabled the Academy to increase the frequency and quality of our print communications, including Academy World magazine, postcards, appeal letters and invitations. With Mrs. Knapp’s support, we have been able to move our communication from good to great during Mr. LaBrecque’s tenure as Head of School. Mrs. Knapp wanted to give back to the Academy for the education her four boys, Andrew ’86, Graeme ’87, Gregory ’90 and Matthew ’94NG, received while students. “As a small business owner, giving back by donating services allowed me to make a

gift that was much more valuable than any cash gift I could afford,” said Mrs. Knapp. “I enjoy knowing that because I am covering the cost of the Academy’s direct mail services, it is able to put more operating dollars into academics, arts and athletics.” Ginny’s children have followed her lead. They are also generous supporters of the Academy. Collectively, the family has provided more than $200,000 in in-kind and cash support over the past two decades.
