December 2021 Corinth contract award Corinth Pipeworks awarded contract from GAZ-SYSTEM SA Poland, to supply steel pipes for the Gustorzyn Wronow gas pipeline

T

he linepipe contract awarded to Corinth Pipeworks from the Gas Transmission Operator of Poland GAZ-SYSTEM SA forms part of Gustorzyn - Wronow gas pipeline in Poland and comprises of 80 km of 40” coated steel pipes. Corinth Pipeworks’ proposal was evaluated and ranked first amongst other international and Polish manufacturers, as being the most advantageous. Its value amounts up to PLN 217,192,029.00 including quantity and transportation tolerance (ca. EUR 47 million).

The aim of the project is to build a high-pressure gas pipeline from Gustorzyn to Wronow, which will enable the transmission of increased volumes of gas to Warsaw and Lodz agglomerations, Radom and its surroundings, and to the south-eastern regions of Poland.

Pipes manufacturing and coating will take place at Corinth Pipeworks’ facilities in Greece. Deliveries are planned to start in Poland at the beginning of April 2022 and conclude by August 2022.

Based on advanced digital algorithms, the new solution is unique in that it offers not only powerful real-time ladle tracking but also automated crane scheduling and a predictive thermal modelling engine. The tracking engine follows ladle movement via cranes and transfer cars in real time. Radar and laser positioning technologies provide accurate visualization while reducing hardware footprint and maintenance needs compared to radio-frequency identification (RFID) solutions. The automated crane scheduling includes job forecasting, route planning and automatic acknowledgement of jobs.

This will enable steelmakers to move towards autonomous operations by eliminating manual co-ordinations, with increased safety in hot zones due to lower footfall.

The thermal engine function uses ladle thermal history from the tracking engine and forecasted heat movement from scheduling engines to predict the thermal loss during ladle transfer and predicts the correct lift temperature at ladle furnace. This results in better superheat compliance at the caster, eliminating caster slowdowns, hence increasing productivity.

Steelmakers can expect ABB Ability™ Smart Melt Shop to help increase superheat compliance to enable 4-5 percent higher casting speeds to improve productivity and reduce arcing by 5 degrees Celsius per heat in ladle furnaces for increased energy and cost efficiency.

ABB Ability™ Smart Melt Shop has already been installed by JSW Steel Ltd, India’s leading steel company, where it has been integrated into a wider expansion at Dolvi Works plant in Maharashtra state. It is expected to increase the company’s EBITDA profit by around $2million per annum through 4 percent higher casting speeds, time savings of one working day per month and additional output equating to 24,000 tons a year.

Leak Testing of Tubes and Pipes

he oil, gas, water, food and beverage, aerospace, power generation, construction and pharmaceutical industries all fabricate many thousands of metres of tubes and pipes every year and all joints need to be tested for leak tightness before release for use. This is particularly so in the nuclear sector where potential release of toxic compounds presents a health hazard. It’s also a significant requirement in the aerospace industry where leaks could endanger life.

Hydrostatic testing is the safest and most common method employed for testing pipes and pressure vessels and this is normally undertaken using water. Pneumatic testing using compressed inert gas or air may be used, but only under carefully controlled conditions. Failure during testing with water releases only nominal energy because water is almost incompressible. Escape of gas during pneumatic procedures can be dangerous because it can result in the sudden release of very large amounts of energy.

In principle, tests are simple operations. The pipe or vessel joint being examined is isolated and the test medium is introduced and then pressurised. Leaks are detected either by measuring pressure fall or by examination of the surface for visual evidence.

Selecting the optimum sealing technique prior to testing requires a sound knowledge of available products.

The operator needs to consider tube or pipe diameter, test pressure and possible contamination by the sealing equipment.

Aluminium Test Plugs are heavy duty and are available in the size range 38 to 900 mm. Systems installs and commissions new Spray-Cooled™ Gravity Drained EAF Roof at Optimus Steel

A

s part of its mill modernisation upgrade that was completed last month, Optimus Steel, Beaumont, TX installed and commissioned a new Spray-Cooled™ electric arc furnace (EAF) roof and elbow with Systems Spray-Cooled. The design-build-install project includes a new EAF roof, elbow, engineering, laser scans, and accompanying equipment that will replace its existing tubular equipment. The full scope, in conjunction with Systems Contracting, includes piping and gantry modifications.

This project marks the first ever gravity drained SprayCooled™ EAF roof. The EAF roof and piping were designed such that venturi suction pumps are not required to evacuate water

from the roof during slag and tap. This eliminates the need for the pumps as well as the required piping.

Also, the EAF roof was converted from a traditional 4-point gantry lift roof to a 2-point gantry lift roof.

Optimus will eliminate the associated downtime and maintenance issues with their old gantry arm design. The new design will address current operational issues and will allow for better roof alignment and delta changes. The elbow incorporates a new integrated drain design that eliminates bolted connections for quicker change outs. The roof diameter has been oversized to allow for a larger furnace sidewall in the future. This project is expected to be the first phase of a multi-phase melt shop upgrade to a more optimized design with the upper shell and off-gas system to follow.

ABB launches tundish-focused electromagnetic stirring solution to help steelmakers increase quality, productivity and profitability

lobal technology company ABB has today launched its Tundish EMS solution to enable steelmakers to overcome the limited ability of the tundish vessel in controlling the flow of molten metal, and therefore steel quality and temperature.

Tundish EMS is placed on the outside of the tundish and uses non-contact electromagnetic stirring technology to generate an electromagnetic field that creates a stirring effect in the bath melt.

This continuous stirring significantly increases mixing zone volume for virtually the entire tundish, with higher flow speeds, elimination of dead zones and homogenization of temperature.

Adoption of this electromagnetic stirring technology will be particularly important for steelmakers with multiple casting strands coming from one tundish. It will mean greater removal of inclusions, resulting in smoother, cleaner steel and reductions in nozzle clogging.

By creating a stirring flow throughout the entire tundish melt bath, Tundish EMS delivers rapid homogenization of temperature and chemical composition that results in better quality steel, more uniform and repeatable casting conditions across multiple strands and overall improved quality, productivity and profitability in billet and bloom casting and metal powder production.

Experts’ Day at Düsseldorf’s leading world trade fairs wire and Tube in May 2022 Wire and Tube, the No. 1 international trade fairs for the wire, cable and tube industries, will again be held together at the Düsseldorf Fairgrounds from 9 to 13 May 2022.

The motto of the expert meeting organised by Messe Düsseldorf is: “The steel industry is forging ahead with the green transformation”. The event is organised by the Stahl- Kommunikation agency. As the number of visitors is limited for hygiene reasons, we ask for early registration.

After the cancellation of wire and Tube in 2020 due to Corona, the interest of the industries in the trade fairs in the coming year is fortunately very high.

In addition to innovative technologies and technical highlights in the exhibition halls, there will be the wire and Tube Expert Meeting for the first time. In entertaining, professional
