Glazed Bricks Terca glazed bricks: façade bricks with a high quality glaze coating. Widely applicable for restoration or renovation, where the colour, shape, size and structure is custom made. But also fashionable in new buildings, for a refreshingly different façade. The possibilities, just like the applications, are endless; as a special detail, to accentuate lines and as a chip-proof and graffiti resistant protection, both for interior and exterior use.

This brochure is a compilation of examples to inspire you. It shows many solutions for achieving special, expressive façades, ornaments and details.

Standard and Made To Order Think out of the box, with Terca glazed bricks for monumental surfaces as well as for subtle details.

Standard and in stock the Wienerberger range comprise six colours: red, ivory white, blue, green yellow and black. Suppliable in ‘Waal’ and ‘English’ format from an extruding press. These colours are available on request in smooth (press moulded) or with a rustic look (hand moulded).

There are also 37 other standard colours available: clean (extrusion press), smooth (pressed mould) and rustic (hand mould).

Customised You need not feel limited to the 43 standard colours. Almost all RAL colours can be produced per project, with specific finishes like pearl, metallic and glitter if required.

Finishes with transparent glaze are also possible so that the underlying colour remains visible.

Shapes, Sizes For special effects we provide glazed bricks in large sizes and in special shapes. Curves form a frame. Uneven hand moulded bricks add extra texture.

Wienerberger gives ideas colour and shape, irrespective of the size of the project. Whether it is an existing solution - or we can make one together consistently, and in the flawless Wienerberger quality.

The product quality of Terca glazed bricks is useful for buildings and spaces that are exposed to pollution and/or damage. Chip proof to a high degree, the façade or wall will remain undamaged for longer. Being chemically resistant the walls are easily kept clean, from, for example, graffiti and exhaust fumes.

Both the ceramic carrier and the glazed top coat can last for hundreds of years. The Isthar Gate, one of the eight entrances to one of the wonders of the world, Babylon, is made entirely of blue glazed bricks and ornaments. The gate has maintained all its splendour, almost 2,600 years after completion.

Quality The highest quality clay is used for Terca glazed bricks. The clay is highly conditioned, after which the glaze is applied. The bricks are then fired at 1200˚C.

Architectural Styles Architects Oud, Rietveld and Elling used glazed building materials with lines and surfaces in white, grey and black, or using bright, primary colours, often for a minimalistic abstract effect. In the thirties glazed bricks were often used as a damp course, because they were chip proof, provided a barrier against splashing water and gave an extra contrast to the windows above them.

The applications for Terca glazed bricks are endless and timeless. Which is why a growing number of architects are rediscovering the power of this excellent type of ceramic. There is without doubt talk of a revival. Faรงades are appearing where colour arrangements, ornamental details and material use provide fantastic contrasts. With glazed bricks as the main theme, or in combination with other (ceramic) materials.

Restoration, renovation and extensions Wienerberger has the capacity and expertise to make exact copies of existing glazed bricks for restorations, renovations or extensions. Wienerberger was involved in the much talked about renovation of the famous Savoy Hotel in London. And in the building and renovation of the metro station Rotterdam CS. The original lines of glaze were continued into the damp-proof course below.

The old and new elements are indistinguishable from one another, not in colour nor in size.

For the pure aesthetics of it we search for the glazed brick that fits exactly. With exactly the same characteristics, but then newly made and fired for you.

New Build Housing Glazed bricks also give a new faรงade or wall an eye-catching effect. Let your creativity run wild.

Consider for example the uniform use of one colour, or of combinations in one colour with different textures, formats or shapes. On the other hand a playful colour palette can give extra expression to a faรงade when required.

Special effects can also be created by using accents and areas with glazed bricks, creating contrasts in colour or texture with other materials.

There are also other applications aside from faรงade exteriors. Glazed bricks are extremely suitable for, seating elements, for example, either outside or in waiting rooms for public transport.

Handling The glaze coating is sometimes on the face and sometimes on the end of the brick. There is no glaze on the areas in contact with cement or mortar. The CE declaration of the brick states the initial water absorption of the brick. The clay, the durable raw material for all ceramic bricks, determines which mortar must be used.
