ACADEMIC DRESS
The history of academic dress begins in the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the Portuguese University of Coimbra to wear gowns. In England during the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. It is still a question whether academic dress finds its sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or in civilian dress. Gowns may have been considered necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings used by medieval scholars. Hoods may have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull cap. The cap was later displaced by a headdress similar to ones now recognized as “academic.” European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications of academic dress.
In the United States, the practice of wearing academic apparel dates back to colonial times, but there was no uniform standard of approved attire until 1895 when a commission of leading American educators devised a code of academic dress. Although modified in 1932 by the American Council on Education, this code continues to govern the style of academic dress today.
GOWNS – The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, with the sleeve base hanging down in the traditional manner. The rear part of the sleeve’s oblong shape is square cut and the front part has an arc cut away. It may be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctor’s degree has bellshaped sleeves and may be worn open or closed. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns have no trimmings, but the doctor’s may be faced on the front with black or colored velvet and with three bars of the same across the sleeves. If color is used, it is the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains, and it matches the edging or binding of the hood. The colors associated with the different disciplines include the following:
Arts, Letters, and Humanities—White
Commerce, Accountancy, and Business—Drab Brown Economics—Copper Education—Light Blue Engineering—Orange Fine Arts—Brown Journalism—Crimson Law—Purple Library Science—Lemon Medicine—Green
Music—Pink Nursing—Apricot Philosophy and Psychology—Dark Blue Physical Education—Sage Green Physical Therapy—Teal Public Administration—Peacock Blue Public Health—Salmon Pink Science—Golden Yellow Social Work—Citron Theology and Hospitality Management—Scarlet
HOODS – Hoods are worn by those receiving graduate degrees. The colors used in the satin linings are drawn, customarily, from the official colors of the granting institution. Widener University’s colors are blue and gold. The trimming on the hood varies in color and usually indicates the field of study.
CAPS – Mortarboards are generally worn as part of the academic costume. The long tassel fastened to the middle point of the cap’s top is either black or the color appropriate to the subject, except that the doctor’s cap may have its tassel of gold threads. It is customary for degree candidates to wear the tassels on the right front side before degrees are conferred and to shift them to the left when the degrees are awarded
THE MACE A ceremonial staff carried by the Grand Marshal of the University to open and close academic convocations.
The Honorable Tamika Montgomery-Reeves
Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit
The Honorable Tamika Montgomery-Reeves has built a distinguished career defined by her achievements as a dedicated public servant, a staunch advocate for diversity in the judiciary, and a fierce defender of the rule of law. After graduating from the University of Georgia School of Law, she excelled as a junior attorney in private practice, focusing on corporate governance, securities litigation, and complex commercial litigation.
While clerking for Chancellor William B. Chandler III in the Delaware Court of Chancery, Judge Montgomery-Reeves discovered her passion and talent for corporate law, which ultimately led to her own appointment to that bench in 2015. As Vice Chancellor on the Court of Chancery, she applied her corporate law expertise and commitment to public service to uphold principles of fairness and justice in the nation’s preeminent Court of Equity.
Her service on the Delaware bench garnered national recognition and respect. In 2019, she was appointed to the Delaware Supreme Court with a unanimous confirmation by the Delaware State Senate—a testament to her proven leadership and impeccable reputation within the First State. In 2022, Judge Montgomery-Reeves’s excellent service on the Delaware bench was further recognized with a nomination by President Joe Biden to the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals and confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
Throughout the ascendancy of her career, she has remained steadfast in her advocacy for important causes, including advancing opportunities and equity for all Delawareans and providing reliable housing and resources for individuals with HIV/AIDS. Her service beyond the bench sets a standard for graduates as they prepare to make a positive impact on their communities.
With each milestone in her career, Judge Montgomery-Reeves has emerged as a trailblazer and servant of the public good. As the youngest justice and first Black woman appointed to the Delaware Supreme Court, and only the second Black woman to serve on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, her historic rise to the federal bench has laid a pathway for future clerks, lawyers, and justices to follow—many of whom sit before the audience on this momentous day
The Widener University Delaware Law School community celebrates Judge Montgomery-Reeves’s tremendous professional and personal accomplishments and is grateful for the wealth of knowledge and experience she brings to the classroom as an adjunct professor at Widener Delaware Law School. She stands as an exceptional example for all to emulate.
