ACADEMIC DRESS
The history of academic dress begins in the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the Portuguese University of Coimbra to wear gowns. In England during the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. It is still a question whether academic dress finds its sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or in civilian dress. Gowns may have been considered necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings used by medieval scholars. Hoods may have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull cap. The cap was later displaced by a headdress similar to ones now recognized as “academic.” European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications of academic dress.
In the United States, the practice of wearing academic apparel dates back to colonial times, but there was no uniform standard of approved attire until 1895 when a commission of leading American educators devised a code of academic dress. Although modified in 1932 by the American Council on Education, this code continues to govern the style of academic dress today.
GOWNS – The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, with the sleeve base hanging down in the traditional manner. The rear part of the sleeve’s oblong shape is square cut and the front part has an arc cut away. It may be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctor’s degree has bellshaped sleeves and may be worn open or closed. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns have no trimmings, but the doctor’s may be faced on the front with black or colored velvet and with three bars of the same across the sleeves. If color is used, it is the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains, and it matches the edging or binding of the hood. The colors associated with the different disciplines include the following:

HOODS – Hoods are worn by those receiving graduate degrees. The colors used in the satin linings are drawn, customarily, from the official colors of the granting institution. Widener University’s colors are blue and gold. The trimming on the hood varies in color and usually indicates the field of study.
CAPS – Mortarboards are generally worn as part of the academic costume. The long tassel fastened to the middle point of the cap’s top is either black or the color appropriate to the subject, except that the doctor’s cap may have its tassel of gold threads. It is customary for degree candidates to wear the tassels on the right front side before degrees are conferred and to shift them to the left when the degrees are awarded

The Honorable N. Christopher Griffiths
Justice of the Supreme Court of Delaware
On May 22, 2023, the Hon. N. Christopher Griffiths was sworn in to a 12-year term as the first Black man to serve as a justice of the Delaware Supreme Court.
Griffiths, the son of two former police officers, grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. He attended St. Peter’s Cathedral School, St. Ann’s School and Salesianum High School. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in finance and minors in economics and management information systems. Upon graduation, Griffiths worked at the Vanguard Group and then at the Wilmington Trust Co.
Griffiths then returned to school, earning his law degree from Villanova University School of Law in 2008. During law school he was a member of the mock trial team and served as a law clerk at the Delaware Department of Justice He was also a judicial extern for Judge Mary F. Walrath of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Following law school, Griffiths joined the law firm of Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz LLP as an associate. There, his practice focused on corporate, commercial and bankruptcy law.
In 2012, Griffiths became a founding member and later, partner, at the law firm of Connolly Gallagher LLP. His practice expanded to representing government entities in land use disputes, serving as solicitor to municipalities, and representing individuals and government agencies in administrative proceedings
Griffiths’ service on the Supreme Court continues a strong family tradition of public service. His father, Norman D. Griffiths, an attorney for DuPont, spent more than 20 years on the Wilmington City Council, including four as council president. He also held board roles with Christiana Care, Delaware Technical Community College, and the Metropolitan Urban League, and now serves on the boards of Westside Health, Delaware State University and the Delaware Solid Waste Authority. His mother, Michele, contributed her leadership to the Inter Neighborhood Foundation, Child Inc., Girls Inc., and Friends of the Children, and served as president of the South East Ninth Ward Neighborhood Association.
During his time in private practice, Griffiths served on the boards of the Next Generation Board of the Delaware Community Foundation, Boys & Girls Club of Delaware, Children & Families First of Delaware, the Ministry of Caring, Sacred Heart Village, the Wilmington Library, the St. Thomas More Society, and the Delaware Law Related Education Center. He also served on the Delaware Supreme Court Rules Committee, the Delaware Supreme Court Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection, and the Delaware State Bar Association Nominating Committee. Griffiths also coached high school mock trial from 2007 to 2015, before he agreed to become co-chair of the Delaware High School Mock Trial Competition, a position he still holds. Beyond mock trial, Griffiths’ enduring passion for educating children about the practice of law has continued during his time on the bench. He regularly visits classrooms throughout the state – at all grade levels –teaching students about civics, government, and the Constitution.
Griffiths is married to Leigh-Anne Raport, a first-generation college graduate, who also became the first in her family to attend law school, graduating from Widener University Delaware Law School at the top of her class. She is an active member of the Delaware Bar and currently serves as vice president and senior counsel at The Siegfried Group. The couple has two children

WOLCOTT FELLOWS
Wolcott Fellows are appointed each spring for judicial clerkships which begin the following fall. They are chosen from the top full time students in their second year of study or part time students in their second or third year of study Fellows receive academic credit and a scholarship to clerk for justices of the Delaware Supreme Court and Vice Chancellors and Magistrates of the Delaware Court of Chancery during the school year. Successful applicants demonstrate excellence in academic performance and possess substantial experience in research and writing.
PRO BONO, CLINIC & EXTERNSHIP RECOGNITION
Pro Bono Distinction: Delaware Law School recognizes those students who voluntarily provided at least 50 hours of free legal work for organizations serving those with limited means and groups that protect civil liberties or rights. Graduates receiving pro bono distinction wear a red cord to honor their service.
Clinics & Externships: Students who fostered access to justice through a law school clinic or externship with a public service agency or court are recognized for their service. Graduates who engaged in substantial service to the community through clinics or externships wear a red and silver cord to recognize and honor their service
