While the history of Widden Stud is already written, we see a wealth of opportunity set to unfold as we continually seek to improve and enhance one of the great family owned thoroughbred breeding farms of the world.

Geography and Mother Nature have bestowed tremendous natural gifts on Widden, producing a unique environment for the raising of young thoroughbreds. The next generation of the Thompson family are committed to Widden's future as we maintain tradition on the way to achieving fresh success.

Located on 9,000 acres of spectacular horse country in the Widden Valley, our farm features rich alluvial creek flats sheltered by magnificent sandstone cliffs, providing pristine and tranquil surrounds for the exceptional thoroughbreds we produce. The ‘Valley of Champions’ is horse heaven – and the future looks golden.

WIDDEN RAISED AND GRAZED

Foaled and raised in the Widden Valley is a time honoured recipe for Stakes success and our JT2 brand is carried by some of the best current stars in the land.

The perfect environment and the attention of skilled horsemen and women ensures our foals have every opportunity to grow and develop into the racehorses we all want to own.

Physically and mentally, these young thoroughbreds leave our farm well prepared for the next stage of their lives. We take great pride in their achievements with Group 1 winners this season, Zougotcha (Zoustar), Climbing Star (Zoustar) and Griff (Trapeze Artist), all raised and grazed in the ‘Valley of Champions’.

All three Group 1 winners were presented for sale by Widden as yearlings with Zougotcha and Climbing Star sold at Inglis Easter for $500,000 and $600,000 respectively, while Griff was purchased from our draft at Inglis Premier for just $80,000. This trio have already banked over $5.3 million for their happy owners.

The exciting, unbeaten Stakes winning juvenile, Clean Energy (Zoustar), was a $2.6 million purchase from Widden’s Magic Millions draft. Our Premier graduate Tobeornottobe scored a Group 3 two-year-old victory in her first preparation. While Facile (Trapeze Artist) added a Group 3 win to her resume after being sold out of our Easter consignment.

Also showing Group 1 potential is progressive colt Schwarz (Zoustar), a $1.25 million Magic Millions purchase that has already won Group and Listed races, with the promise of more to come.

Widden has enjoyed another outstanding year in the sale ring selling select yearlings for a grand total of more than $35 million across all major Inglis and Magic Millions sales, highlighted by four outstanding youngsters that sold for $1 million or more.

At the Magic Millions sale in January, we sold I Am Invincible fillies from Madam Rouge and Vezalay for $1.7 million and $1 million. While at Inglis Easter, we sold a Zoustar filly from Prompt Response for $2.2 million and a Zoustar colt from Summer Sham for $1.55 million.

Our strategy to invest in high class broodmares with our partners is proving fruitful, both in the sale ring and on the track, and we thank everyone for their support in this most rewarding endeavour.

Zoustar has soared to new heights in the sale ring in 2024. Some 80 yearlings have sold for $40 million and change, highlighted by seven yearlings that sold for $1 million or more, while his Inglis Easter average climbed to an impressive $693,333.

THAT WIDDEN FEELING

Stallions that deliver is a non-negotiable factor in the success of any stud. Widden are proud to have 10 proven sires on our roster this year that have had runners, and all of them have produced Group winners, seven of them at Group 1 level – Zoustar, Trapeze Artist, Nicconi, Star Witness, Overshare, Gold Standard and Rebel Dane.

The world’s leading sire of winners in 2023, Zoustar has kept his momentum this year and is on track to set a new personal best for winners and earnings in Australia this season with four Group 1 winners – Zougotcha, Climbing Star, Joliestar and Ozzmosis – among his 15 Stakes winners.

His exciting young sire son Zousain is also on the board with Group 3 ATC Magic Night Stakes winner Drifting heading his growing list of eight winners to date.

With their oldest progeny turning four in the spring, Trapeze Artist and Written By are making their mark in the only way that really matters – on the race track.

Trapeze Artist sired Griff to win the Group 1 MRC Caulfield Guineas last spring and produced a Group double at Randwick during The Championships with feature wins for Ducasse and Facile.

Written By sired his first Golden Slipper runner in Group 2 ATC Silver Slipper winner Straight Charge, while his

Stakes winning Group 1 placed, Perth based sprinter Ripcord has won $1 million in prizemoney.

Proving that you don’t need to spend a fortune on a service fee to breed a Group 1 winner, Overshare has given OTI Racing a great result with their wonderful mare Lady Laguna.

Trained by Annabel Neasham, the four year old mare was the first winner and first Stakes winner for her sire Overshare. When Lady Laguna won the Group 1 ATC Canterbury Stakes at WFA she also became his first Group 1 winner on her way to earning some $2.1 million in prizemoney.

Expansion into the Victorian market has been a rewarding experience for Widden and with a roster of nine stallions slanted towards the up and comers, we see exciting times ahead.

New to the roster in 2024 is blue blooded King Colorado, the only Group 1 winning juvenile colt by Juddmonte Farm’s champion sire Kingman, while lightning fast Snitzel son Bruckner will have his first foals arriving in the spring.

Yearling sales this year have seen the first offspring of young guns Russian Camelot (IRE), Doubtland and Dirty Work being sold and entering the stables of leading trainers around the country. We look forward to watching their progress in the season ahead.

Nicconi and Star Witness continue to churn out winners week to week, while Overshare sired his first Group 1 winner this year in Lady Laguna and Gold Standard is set to have his best and biggest crop of yearlings hit sales in 2025.
