WIDDEN STUD’S CHAMPION SIRE ZOUSTAR is the first sire to hit 100 Australian winners for the season capping a year that has delivered a new benchmark of success for our superstar son of Northern Meteor.

Zoustar has sired 18 stakes-winners worldwide in 2023 and leading the way have been his exceptional Group 1 winning three year-olds OZZMOSIS and JOLIESTAR.

A $250,000 Magic Millions purchase for Darby Racing, Ozzmosis won his only two starts at the back end of last season before blossoming in the spring under the care of astute trainer Bjorn Baker. Ozzmosis enjoyed a meteoric rise that culminated in a spectacular victory in the sire making $2 million Group 1 MRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) when he proved his dominance with a length and a half win over I Am Unstoppable and Golden Slipper winner Shinzo.

With four wins from five starts and prizemoney just shy of $1.5 million, OZZMOSIS has the sprinting world at his feet in 2024.

A $950,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Cambridge Stud, Joliestar won her only start as a late two year-old and chimed in late during the spring carnival to win the $1.5 million Group 1 MRC Thousand Guineas (1600m) stamping herself amongst the best of her generation. She is trained by Chris Waller, who also prepared her sire and has shown a happy knack for finding success with his progeny that include Group 1 winner Zougotcha and Group winning mares such as Kiku, Madam Rouge, Haut Brion Her and Olentia. Zoustar has two outstanding prospects for the autumn in Group 3 ATC Breeders Plate winner ESPIONAGE and lightly raced three year-old colt SCHWARZ, who closed out his spring with a win in the Listed VRC Amanda Elliot Stakes. A $1.25 million purchase for the Rosemont – Victorian Stallion Alliance from the Widden Stud Magic Millions draft in 2022, Schwarz has the x-factor about him and we can’t wait to see his career unfold! Zoustar has 45 entries for Magic Millions, 11 of them to be offered by Widden Stud.

Widden Secure I Am Unstoppable Given the respect Widden Stud have for Zoustar colt Ozzmosis it was an easy decision to acquire talented I AM INVINCIBLE colt I Am Unstoppable, who chased him home for second in the $2 million Group 1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes. With two wins and four placings from six starts and prizemoney just shy of $600,000, I Am Unstoppable has never missed a place and is set to return for an ambitious campaign in 2024.

In a deal brokered by Group One Bloodstock’s Mathew Becker, Widden Stud purchased the multiple Group placed stakes-winner and will be offering 20 shares of the 40 share syndicate to clients, with Antony Thompson to act as Racing Manager. “He will remain with Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans, as they’ve done a terrific job with him to date and our initial target races will be the Group 1 VRC Lightning Stakes and Group 1 VRC Newmarket Handicap early in the New Year,” said Antony Thompson.

“He finished his spring in top form and has gone to the paddock a sound and happy horse, so we anticipate he can be a real force in the sprinting ranks next year."

I Am Unstoppable has an elite female pedigree with his first three dams SATIN SLIPPER (Listed), SATIN SHOES (Group 2) and STAR SATIRE (Group 1) all stakes-winners, while his dam and grand-dam are by Golden Slipper winning sires PIERRO and FLYING SPUR.

A Champion 3YO Colt and four-time Group 1 winner, Trapeze Artist has surged to the front of the second season sires division to lead by winners and earnings with the Widden Stud bred and sold Griff winning the $3million Group 1 MRC Caulfield Guineas (1600m). Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Griff broke his maiden at his third run before going for a winter spell in June and took giant strides when returning in the spring.

He won the Listed VRC Exford Plate (1400m) and Group 2 MVRC Stutt Stakes (1600m) before trouncing his rivals with a dazzling display of sustained speed to win the Caulfield Guineas by nearly two lengths.

A modest $80,000 yearling purchase from Widden Stud, Griff has won four of eight starts for his owner Sean Griffiths earning $2million with the promise of more to come! Also the sire of Magic Millions 2YO Classic contender Spywire, Trapeze Artist has 21 entries for Magic Millions and his barn mate and second season peer Written By has the same number and he too has a contender for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in Straight Charge. Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott for the powerful Yulong stable, Straight Charge beat all bar Espionage in the Group 3 ATC Breeders Plate and has looked sharp and strong in recent trials as he prepares for a tilt at the Gold Coast.

Yearling buyers love a proven source of success and there is none better than Widden Stud.

The Magic Millions Sale will mark the first test of the yearling market for a new quartet of Widden Stud based sires in Anders, Dirty Work, Doubtland and Russian Camelot (IRE).

History and family tradition might be a big part of the Widden story, but it’s results on the race track that keep our customers coming back and last season was particularly rewarding with star graduates headed by Group 1 winner ZOUGOTCHA and stakes performers such as LAZZAGO, DAISIES, BUENOS NOCHES, WHAT YOU NEED, SWEET RIDE, ZOU TIGER, A LOT MORE LOVE, FACILE, etc.

The new season has brought more of the same with Group 1 MRC Caulfield Guineas winner GRIFF leading the Widden charge along with quality stayer FIRST IMMORTAL, $1.25 million colt SCHWARZ and exciting two year-old colt ODINSON.

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Odinson was third on debut in the Group 3 VRC Maribyrnong Plate and improved at his next start to win the $500,000 Inglis Nursery RL to bring an exciting pedigree update for his Magic Millions bound half-brother. Conceived in the Northern Hemisphere by NIGHT OF THUNDER, Odinson was bred by Qatar Bloodstock and is the first foal of GOOD VIBES (GB), a Group 3 winner by DUE DILIGENCE that was bought from the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2019 for 390,000 guineas. The second foal of Good Vibes is a ZOUSTAR colt that will be offered by Widden at Magic Millions as Lot 722 and she has delivered another colt by Zoustar this spring.

A brilliantly fast Group 3 winning son of Not a Single Doubt, ANDERS appeals as a natural fit for the Gold Coast marketplace where he was sold by Arrowfield back in 2019 for $670,000 making him the highest priced colt by his sire sold at that sale. The good looks that made him a popular pick in the sale ring translated into Group success on the track and Anders has passed on his best attributes to his offspring with 26 catalogued for sale. DIRTY WORK (Written Tycoon) and DOUBTLAND (Not A Single Doubt) are also fast Group winning sons of champion sires and have 11 and three yearlings respectively.
