WIDDEN STUD HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN AS THE ‘VALLEY OF CHAMPIONS’ and our peerless reputation for producing quality thoroughbreds, established by the Thompson last century, continues to deliver the elite racehorses of today.
Widden Stud were the leading Gr.1 vendor last season, with ZOUGOTCHA (Zoustar), GRIFF (Trapeze Artist) and CLIMBING STAR (Zoustar) all succeeding at the highest level and, in the case of Zougotcha, it was on multiple occasions.
Born and bred at Widden, Zougotcha won the Group 1 ATC Flight Stakes at three and has since trained on to win the Group 1 ATC Coolmore Classic and Queen of the Turf Stakes, making her the most successful offspring for her champion sire ZOUSTAR, outside of the mighty mare SUNLIGHT, who was also born, bred and sold by Widden.
The next generation of two year-olds from Widden are already out and making their mark, including stakes-placed PRICE TAG and Golden Gift runner-up WEST OF SWINDON as well as ill-fated colt KING KIRK , who won this year’s Group 3 ATC Breeders Plate and was the very first horse we put through the sale ring at the Gold Coast in 2024.

A fast sprinting son of reigning Champion HK sire DEEP FIELD, Portland Sky scored his first stakes win as a spring three year-old when beating Bella Nipotina to win the Group 3 MVRC Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) and in the autumn was quickly stepped up by his trainer Matt Laurie into Gr.1 company.
Portland Sky won the Group 1 MRC Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and split Masked Crusader and Libertini in the Group 1 MVRC William Reid Stakes (1200m), proving his class and speed at WFA.
Portland Sky is a grand-son of NORTHERN METEOR, who was such a pivotal sire for Widden in giving us Zoustar and, in turn, his son Zousain.
PORTLAND SKY is our new stallion at the sales of 2025 and there is much enthusiasm for his progeny with the first of them to hit the sale ring at the Gold Coast
“It’s a sireline that has been very successful for us and breeds a distinctive type of horse that we have become very familiar with, so we always believed Portland Sky fit that profile and could make his mark with us,” said Antony Thompson.
ZOUSTAR was the world’s leading sire of winners in 2023 with an astonishing 281 winners worldwide, including 18 stakes-winners, and will take the title again in 2024 with an even higher total.

and is also ahead on stakes-winners with 21 on the board, including his Gr.1 winners ZOUGOTCHA , CLIMBING STAR and his history making Northern Hemisphere bred colt STARLUST, winner of the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.
Spring racing has produced two new Gr.1 performers for Zoustar with outstanding three year-old colt GROWING EMPIRE placing in the Group 1 Everest, Manikato Stakes and Coolmore Stud Stakes, while progressive mare RIGHT TO PARTY made a swift rise through the sprinting ranks finishing with a desperately close second in the Group 1 VRC Champions Sprint.
Both gallopers promise to deliver more at the elite level in 2025 with Zoustar looking well placed to challenge for the title of Champion Australian Sire for 2024/2025 after finishing second and fifth in the previous two seasons.
Zoustar yearlings in 2025 were bred from a fee of $198,000 making them, in theory, the best quality crop of foals he has produced so far … watch this space!
Zousain was quick to get on the board at the start of spring with a stakes win for his Group winning filly of last season DRIFTING and then closed out the Flemington Carnival with victory in the Group 3 VRC Red Roses Stakes for his up and coming filly AMELITA .
Trained by Chris Waller, as was her sire and grand-sire, Amelita was sourced from Magic Millions for $280,000 and, with two wins and a second from five starts, has nearly repaid her purchase price.
Zousain has 21 entries for the sale offered by 13 different vendors.
Zoustar’s good looking son ZOUSAIN narrowly missed landing a Gr.1 victory on the racetrack, placing him in the more affordable bracket of sires when he retired to stud, but with a growing tally of winners his star is on the rise.
The Champion 3YO Colt and the best sprinting son of champion sire Snitzel, TRAPEZE ARTIST has come into his own as his progeny have matured and finished 2023/2024 as the Champion Second Crop Sire by earnings.
Trapeze Artist hit the heights quickly, siring quality colt GRIFF to win the $3 million Group 1 MRC Caulfield Guineas, while DUCASSE and FACILE also posted Group wins for their sire at Randwick.
Trapeze Artist is powering ahead with a slew of new winners this season and two new stakes horses in FLYING TRAPEZE and PLEASURE ARTIST.

Widden Stud are always looking to the future and 2025 will see two new sires joining our roster in US speed demon COGBURN (USA) and two time Australian Gr.1 winner SOUTHPORT TYCOON, a son of champion sire Written Tycoon.
Acclaimed as the fastest horse in the world following his win this year in the Group 1 Jaipur Stakes at Saratoga on the turf over five and a half furlongs when he set a North American and world record time of 59.80seconds, Cogburn has a unique brand of speed.
Antony Thompson is excited to introduce fresh new bloodlines to the Widden roster via Cogburn, who is by one of the hottest young sires in North America.
“Cogburn is one of six Gr.1 winners by NOT THIS TIME who is regarded as one of the most exciting young sires in North America, attracting comparisons to champion Australian sire I Am Invincible, for his meteoric rise at Taylor Made Stallions – starting off from a modest fee of $15,000 when he went to stud in 2017, his fee has since rocketed to $175,000,” said Thompson.
“His first crop that are now six year-olds produced 17 stakes-winners and his second crop produced 12 stakes-winners, with his current crop of two year-olds, including his first Royal Ascot winner SHAREHOLDER, winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes over five furlongs.”
With nearly 70% winners to runners and 11% SW to runners, Not This Time has sired the winners of over $10.7 million in North America this year, highlighted by 11 stakes-winners.
His overwhelming racetrack performance has spilled over into the sales arena in spectacular fashion. Not This Time had the highest priced yearling colt at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale selling for $3.4 million and has had additional yearlings in 2024 sell for $1.3 million, $1.15 million, $1 million etc for an average of $372,895 off a $75,000 service fee in 2022.

A $300,000 Magic Millions graduate from Daandine Stud, who also bred and sold Golden Slipper winner and leading sire CAPITALIST, Southport Tycoon has a deep female family that also features Gr.1 winning sprinters ARTORIUS and DELECTATION and importantly, he is free of Danehill blood.
Trained by Ciaron Maher, Southport Tycoon will remain in work through the autumn with target races to include the Group 1 C.F Orr Stakes and Group 1 Futurity Stakes.
