SINCE 1867

For over a century and a half, Widden Stud has built its legacy on the stock we produce, the stallions we stand and the pristine, fertile valley we call home. Located on 9000 acres of spectacular horse country in the Widden Valley, our farm features rich alluvial creek flats sheltered by magnificent sandstone cliffs, providing rich and tranquil surrounds from which to raise thoroughbreds destined for greatness.

There are few modern studs that can proclaim they have prospered solely as working farms through the decades. Widden provides the unique blend of institutional knowledge and youthful exuberance that is necessary to ensure relevance and succession through the ages.

This proud tradition of excellence is continuing to deliver new chapters of success as the next generation look forward to making their mark on Widden’s future. Both Amy and Sam have the thoroughbred business in their blood and their well-honed horse skills and boundless enthusiasm are a huge asset for Widden as we look towards the future.

Leading up to another busy season, we would like to thank our valued clients for their ongoing support as we reflect on a year to remember.

For as long as there have been thoroughbred sales in Australia, so too has there been Widden’s historical brand of JT over lazy 2. The long list of champions and Stakes-winners foaled and raised in these fertile paddocks include modern day champions such as Australian Horse of the Year Dissident, triple Group 1 winner Duais and champion three-year-old filly Sunlight.

This season’s dazzling three year-old Zoustar filly, Zougotcha, is the latest to fly the flag of Group 1 success. A $500,000 Inglis Easter purchase, Zougotcha blazed through the Sydney Spring Carnival taking out the Darley Princess Series, capped by a dominant win in the Gr.1 ATC Flight Stakes. Further success in the autumn saw her head for a winter spell with five wins from nine starts and prizemoney just shy of $1 million. She has been the flagship performer in Australia this season for Zoustar, whose first Northern Hemisphere bred runners last year produced the champion European two-year-old filly Lezoo.

The second leading Australian sire by winners and fifth by earnings, Zoustar has also soared to new heights in the sale ring with 30 of his stock averaging $628,667 at Magic Millions, where his filly from Solar Charged sold for $2.6 million. Purchased by Yulong, she is a full sister to Sunlight and was the highest priced yearling filly sold in Australia in 2023.

Solar Charged x Zoustar filly sold for $2.6 million at 2023 Magic Millions.

The Encosta De Lago sireline has proven a runaway success for Widden Stud in the past and we welcome an exciting new addition from this powerful sire dynasty to the farm this spring. A $2.4 million earning dual-Group 1 winning grandson of Encosta De Lago, Jacquinot will be the third Golden Rose winner to stand at Widden, joining Zoustar and Trapeze Artist. Blessed with an electric turn of foot, Jacquinot beat a stellar field of older Group 1 performers when winning the MRC CF Orr Stakes at WFA, a race also won at three by Redoute’s Choice and All Too Hard.

Also new for 2023 is Bruckner, a son of four-time champion sire Snitzel. Bruckner made headlines in 2020 when he sold at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $725,000, a testament to his athletic type and superior pedigree. Bruckner showed early ability, running third on debut as a two-year-old. As a three-year-old, he lived up to expectations, winning the Gr.3 HDF McNeil Stakes, beating the previous season’s Gr.1 Blue Diamond winner Artorius, before placing in the Gr.2 Danehill Stakes and the Gr.1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

This season we look forward to seeing the first crop of foals by Group 1 winning sprinter Portland Sky. The best sire son and the heir apparent to Deep Field is bound to produce some good-looking, fast and precocious youngsters. Our stallions, chosen for their ability to add depth and quality to broodmares across a vast spectrum, have produced generations of tough, predominantly speed-orientated thoroughbred families that will ensure success for years to come.

Zougotcha wins the Gr.1 Flight Stakes and takes out the Darley Princess Series.

Jacquinot is a star colt who has a big engine. He has a great temperament and could sustain a long burst of speed which only the best can do. Looking forward to see him pass that on to his progeny.”
– Damien Lane, Jockey

Louis Mihalyka | Laurel Oak

Jacquinot has a pedigree that is a cocktail of some of the greatest influences on Australian breeding in recent times. He is from the Encosta De Lago sireline, inbred to Redoute’s Choice’s dam Shantha’s Choice and carries strains of Danehill, Fairy King and his brother Sadler’s Wells, Zabeel, influential mare Rolls, her sire Mr. Prospector, and others, that provide a multitude of opportunities to inbreed and reinforce aspects of a mare’s pedigree by breeding to Jacquinot.

The beauty of the flexibility of Jacquinot’s pedigree is that the affinities with the broodmare band are not just restricted to specific broodmare sires but can also be found in the bottom half of a mare’s pedigree as so many second, third and fourth dam sires will complement the ancestor’s listed above.

Specific broodmare sires that complement Jacquinot’s pedigree include Zoustar, Headwater, Sebring, Pride Of Dubai, Vancouver, Sepoy, Preferment and Teofilo amongst many others.

The success of Widden Stud relies not only on the horses we produce, but also on our people. We have assembled an outstanding team of horse men and women dedicated to the care of our thoroughbreds under the guidance of long time General Manager, Derek Field, and Stud Manager, David Merrick.

The unique working environment we offer has attracted people from all over the world seeking to enhance their bloodstock credentials with a stint at Widden and we appreciate their hard work and fresh outlook as we continually seek to evolve and improve.

Producing thoroughbreds for success in the sale ring and ultimately on the racetrack requires attention to detail and we are grateful to our staff in both New South Wales and Victoria, who share our commitment to excellence.

Widden Stud offers a full range of services and our experienced bloodstock staff are always available to assist clients with any and all bloodstock matters ranging from pedigree analysis and mating advice to sales planning, preparation, agistment (long and short term) and acquisition of new stock.

Dirty Work.
Russian Camelot.

Our expansion into the Victorian market continues to provide a rewarding experience and with a burgeoning roster of nine stallions, Widden Victoria is well placed to service broodmare owners seeking a diverse offering priced to suit all budgets.

Proven Group 1 producing sires – Nicconi, Magnus and Star Witness – offer unbeatable value, continually delivering a consistent stream of Stakes-winners and city winners, providing broodmare owners a second to none chance of producing a quality winner of their own.

Particularly pleasing last year was the reception afforded our promising young sires Gold Standard and Overshare, whose first crops of two-year-olds put their names in lights after they started their stud careers at Spendthrift. The duo covered 259 mares between them and we look forward to watching their careers unfold.

Three of our sires see their first yearlings go to public auction this season and we are confident that the market will greet the first crops of Russian Camelot, Doubtland and Dirty Work encouragingly.

New to the roster this spring and bringing the explosive speed of the Snitzel sireline to Victoria is Group 1 performer Bruckner. A super-fast Group winning colt trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Bruckner ran the race of his life to beat all bar Home Affairs in a vintage renewal of the Gr.1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) with seven of the colts that contested the race all standing at major studs this spring.

Sprinters and stayers, proven and promising, the Victorian roster for 2023 has something for everyone.

Bruckner was a serious talent. He had speed and class in abundance and has the makings of an exciting sire. We look forward to seeing his progeny on the racetrack in the coming years – hopefully they're as stunning, athletic and talented as he is.” – Ciaron Maher, Trainer
