Widden Whinnies - 2025 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale
Widden Whinnies
THE TIDE IS RISING –ZOUSTAR
SHOWCASING SOME OF THE VERY BEST RACING IN THE WORLD, the Autumn Carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne are in full swing as we head to the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and it’s been a rising tide of success for our champion sire Zoustar.
INGLIS EASTER 2025
His brilliant mare JOLIESTAR produced her dazzling best to win the $1.5 million Group 1 VRC Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in early March and the Chris Waller trained four year-old has now won over $3.6 million for her owners Cambridge Stud, who purchased her from Inglis Easter for $950,000.
SUNLIGHT’s exciting three year-old full sister CLEAN ENERGY made a scintillating return to form to win the Group 3 MVRC Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) after missing the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Bred and sold by Widden, the three yearold daughter of Zoustar was bought by Yulong for $2.6 million at the Gold Coast and is the only horse to have defeated LADY SHENANDOAH, having beaten the triple Gr.1 winning three year-old twice last season at two.
Rosemont Stud and the Victorian Stallion Alliance have always been big fans of Zoustar and were duly rewarded when their four year-old stallion SCHWARZ landed a valuable victory in the $1 million Group 1 MVRC William Reid Stakes (1200m).
Schwarz in particular was a phenomenal result for Widden Stud as we bred and sold him as a yearling and will offer his full brother at Inglis Easter as Lot 198.
Summer Sham traces back through SHANTHA’S CHOICE on her tail female line to legendary matriarch DANCING SHOW (USA), who is also the fourth dam of Golden Slipper winner MARHOONA , so this most revered of female families is showing no sign of slowing up having delivered two new Group 1 winners in the past month.
Schwarz is the first living foal of Group 2 winner SUMMER SHAM and he made $1.25 million at the Gold Coast. Her two subsequent foals, also by Zoustar, have sold for $800,000 (SILVER WEDDING filly) and $1.55 million ( TUSCANY colt) and the colt we have brought to Riverside Stables this year is every bit as good.
Outside of the show-stopping full brother to Schwarz, the Widden draft for Inglis Easter features 22 youngsters that include seven by Zoustar and a solid representation from champion sires SNITZEL, I AM INVINCIBLE, WRITTEN TYCOON and EXTREME CHOICE.
Cracking colts by gun shuttle sires TOO DARN HOT (GB) and WOOTTON BASSETT (GB) will also add spice to an exceptional draft.

First Stakes Win for Prestige Forever
Our Inglis Easter draft last year included a strapping bay colt by OLE KIRK from COOL PASSION that sold for $400,000 to Eric Yeung and we were thrilled to see him come out and win the $175,000 Listed MVRC Moonee Valley Pearl (1200m) with a dominant display.
Trained by David Brideoake and Matt Jenkins, PRESTIGE FOREVER was a good second on debut in a Listed race at Flemington on 1 March won by SHINING SMILE and took great benefit out of that promising debut performance.
Ridden by Jamie Mott, Prestige Forever tracked the early speed and when angled around the leaders to challenge he quickly put the race to bed, dashing away to win by nearly four lengths. This race was won last year by GROWING EMPIRE, also at his second start, and was a stepping stone to spring success.
“He's probably not quite fully developed, but in what he's done so far, he's been really impressive. He was bought by a really high-profile owner of ours called Eric Leung, who's a massive supporter of this stable, so well done to him and his family.”
Prestige Forever was bred by long time Widden clients Anne and John McDonnell, who were involved in the ownership of SEBRING as a racehorse and then in his subsequent stud career. Foaled and raised at
Widden, Prestige Forever is the third foal and second winner for Group 3 winning NOT A SINGLE DOUBT mare Cool Passion, a half-sister to stakeswinner HAVANA WIND from the family of Group 3 winner HEADSTONG.
OLE KIRK X COOL PASSION YEARLING
“He ran really well first up, and just probably overdid it a little bit, but it was really good to see him get a good run in transit today and he was really
strong late,” said co-trainer Matt Jenkins.

Southport Tycoon Settles into Widden Victoria
The rise of WRITTEN TYCOON as a sire of sires is an unfolding story.
Widden Stud already have a stake in this evolution with WRITTEN BY and have taken another with the addition of dual Group 1 winner SOUTHPORT TYCOON to the roster in Victoria for this spring.
Southport Tycoon shot to prominence at Flemington at three with a stylish length-and-a-quarter win over subsequent Group 1 ATC
George Ryder Stakes winner VEIGHT and Champion 3YO RIFF ROCKET
in a vintage renewal of the Group 1 VRC Australian Guineas.
He followed up at four with another prestigious Group 1 win in the MVRC Manikato Stakes (1200m) at WFA, beating the glamour ZOUSTAR colt GROWING EMPIRE and $12.8 million earner I WISH I WIN.
“He’s a stunning-looking son of Written Tycoon that we just had to add to our roster. We fought hard to secure this horse, as there was plenty of competition for the Bennett
Racing-owned colt. He looks like the obvious stallion to take the baton from his Champion sire, Written Tycoon,” said Antony Thompson.
A handsome chestnut, very true to the Written Tycoon type, Southport Tycoon was trained throughout his career by Ciaron Maher.
“An imposing colt with an explosive turn of foot, he is typical of Written Tycoon. Southport Tycoon’s data was off the charts, possessing a stride length and speed profile that’s only exhibited by exceptional horses,” said Maher.
“He’s just an elite athlete, with a fantastic temperament and incredible recovery powers that made him a
dream to train. His adaptability was highlighted when we had to debate whether to run in the Newmarket or the Guineas, as he would have won either!” As a dual Group 1 winner at 1200m and 1600m, it’s hard not to see the comparison to current leading first-season sire
OLE KIRK , who is also a dual Group 1-winning son of Written Tycoon.
“Written Tycoon is making a name for himself as a sire of sires, and Ole Kirk is his only other dual Group 1-winning son at stud. He has gotten off to a very strong start with his first runners,” said Thompson.
“Like Ole Kirk, Southport Tycoon is also free of Danehill blood, offering a wealth of opportunity for broodmare owners. He comes from a top-class North American female family that has worked brilliantly in Australia to produce Group 1 winners ARTORIUS and DELECTATION, so he is the complete package in terms of race performance, pedigree, and type.”
Southport Tycoon did the majority of his racing in Victoria, so always appealed as a great fit down south and is priced at $38,500 inc GST.

Cogburn Brings US Speed to Valley of Champions
Widden Stud last year announced a new partnership with Winstar Farm in North America that will see record breaking Group 1 winning sprinter Cogburn (USA) shuttle to Australia later this year.
Acclaimed as the fastest horse in the world last year, COGBURN has a unique brand of speed.
In the Group 1 Jaipur Stakes at Saratoga on the turf over five and a half furlongs (1106m), the explosive sprinter set a North American and World record time of 59.80 seconds, which attracted the interest of Antony Thompson.
“Australia is the land of elite speed on turf and the figures returned by Cogburn are right up there with our very best sprinters,” said Thompson.
“Aside from his astonishing win in the Jaipur Stakes, Cogburn has also clocked brilliant times on the turf for five furlongs (1006m in 55.49 seconds) and six furlongs (1207m in 1:07.68 seconds) which compare favourably with our superstar sprinters.”
BLACK CAVIAR won the 2013 Group 1 VRC Lighting Stakes over 1000m in 55.42 and WRITTEN TYCOON’s sire
IGLESIA won the Group 3 VRC Standish Handicap over 1200m with a time of 1:07.17, a Flemington track record.
With nine wins and two seconds from 16 starts, Cogburn retired at the
end of his five year-old season with earnings topping $US2.4 million, He notably was able to win in each season he raced, including a debut victory at two.
"I've had some of the fastest horses in the world, some of the fastest horses of all time, and he's still the first one I've ever had run 5 1/2 furlongs in under a minute,” said his trainer Steve Asmussen.
Widden Stud has charted a path into a new era of success this century through astute selection of stallions such as NORTHERN METEOR , SEBRING and ZOUSTAR, and Antony Thompson is excited to introduce the fresh blood of Cogburn into the mix.
– COGBURN, HEAR WHAT THE AUSSIES HAVE TO SAY! –
“Cogburn is one of seven Group 1 winners by NOT THIS TIME, who is regarded as one of the most exciting young sires in North America attracting comparisons to champion Australian sire I AM INVINCIBLE for his meteoric rise at Taylor Made Stallions starting off from a modest fee of $15,000 when he went to stud in 2017,” said Thompson.
“That first crop that produced 17 Stakes-winners and his second crop produced 12 Stakes-winners. His current crop of three year-olds hold serious potential, having already produced seven Stakes-winners last year, including his first Royal Ascot winner SHAREHOLDER, who won the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes (1000m for 2YOs).”
With nearly 70% winners to runners and 12.2% SW to runner, Not This Time has sired 46 Stakes-winners in total
and his fee for 2025 has been set at $175,000, up from $150,000 in 2024.
Cogburn will be one of those stallions breeders will want to see in the flesh and we can’t wait to present him at the annual stallion parades in August.
His popularity in America will see him cover an introductory book of over 200 well credentialed mares at a fee of US$30,000 (AUS$47,500). His Australian fee will be announced in the coming weeks.
