ZOUSTAR MAKES MAGIC THE REIGNING CHAMPION AUSTRALIAN SIRE OF 2024/2025, Zoustar is the pride and joy of Antony Thompson and all the team at Widden Stud. His story started at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in 2012.

Champion 3YO Filly SUNLIGHT. From this incredible start, Zoustar has gone from strength to strength.

That was the last time Zoustar would be anything but top of the class!

The dominant sprinting colt of his generation with wins in the Group 1 ATC Golden Rose and VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes, Zoustar was a champion on the track and quickly became a champion at stud.

His very first crop of yearlings at Magic Millions in 2017 produced the Widden Stud bred and sold

Zoustar has sired 73 lifetime SWs worldwide headed by 11 Gr.1 winners across Australia, the UK and the USA with multiple Gr.1 winners Sunlight, ZOUGOTCHA and JOLIESTAR at the top of the honour roll, while his Gr.1 winning colts SCHWARZ, OZZMOSIS and STARLUST (GB) are all now at stud.

The leading sire of winners in the world for the past two years, Zoustar is on track to take the title again for 2025/26 after siring an astonishing 295 winners in 2024.

Jacquinot had the ability his pedigree would suggest and co-trainer Mick Price is a massive fan of the colt who was placed in a Blue Diamond before training on at three to record Gr.1 wins in the ATC Golden Rose and MRC CF Orr Stakes.

“Speed, soundness, temperament, and genuine Group 1 ability. Most importantly, Jacquinot had what all good stud colts have – tenacity," said Mick Price.

When it came time for yearling inspections, the Magic Millions team headed by Barry Bowditch were more than impressed. They accepted 25 for the Gold Coast in January making Jacquinot the second most represented of all first season sires behind only Australian Horse of the Year, ANAMOE.

When dual Gr.1 winner SOUTHPORT TYCOON arrived at Widden Victoria last year, it was lost on nobody how similar the good-looking chestnut is to his champion sire WRITTEN TYCOON.

TRAPEZE ARTIST has had plenty of success during 2025 with four new Stakes-winners in PIGGYBACK, PINITO, FLYING BANDIT and, most exciting of them all, PANOVA.

Both bred in Queensland at Daandine Stud, they carry the same brand and while Written Tycoon is entering the twilight years of a long and fruitful stud career, it’s all just beginning for his son.

Those races have been used by Chris Waller in past years to launch the careers of superstar fillies FANGIRL and AELIANA, so there is a real air of anticipation surrounding Panova and what heights she can reach in 2026.

Also keep a watch for his Group placed 3YO fillies TUPAKARA and ARTISTIC VENTURE, plus talented 4YO Stakes performers SHE’S AN ARTIST, MOONLIGHT CIRCUS and BIG SWINGER. Headed to the Gold Coast in January will be his slick 4YO sprinter SPYWIRE, who resumed from a spell to win brilliantly at the Kembla standalone meeting in November.

The highest-priced Trapeze Artist yearling in 2023, Spywire was a $520,000 purchase for Ciaron Maher Bloodstock / Group 1 Bloodstock from the Widden draft at Magic Millions.

He showed immediate talent winning two of his first three starts to earn a run in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in which he finished third to STORM BOY. He closed out his juvenile season with a fourth to ARABIAN SUMMER in the Magic Millions National 2YO Classic.

Back better than ever, he will be looking to add to his already impressive earnings which top $780,000.

WRITTEN BY PINHOOK WINNERS AND RACETRACK SUCCESS The 2025 Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale produced a glowing endorsement for the progeny of WRITTEN BY through the eyes of Asian buyers with five offered and all sold to either Hong Kong or Malaysia at an average $256,000.

A Gr.1 winning son of WRITTEN TYCOON, Written By has had three winners from four starters in Hong Kong and is three from three in Malaysia.

His five offered at Inglis Ready 2 Race produced some solid pinhook results for their vendors with the top seller a colt from VALUCHY that made $300,000 for Alma Vale Thoroughbreds when snapped up by Fully Profit Pty Ltd, HK.

CELEBRATING OUR AWARD WINNERS At Widden Stud we take as much pride in nurturing our young people as our horses and the past 12 months have brought great achievements for MACKENZIE PORTER and SAM THOMPSON.

– SAM THOMPSON with Antony and Katie – Awarded annually on merit to an outstanding graduate from any cohort of the TBA Fast Track program, the scholarship provides the recipient with the opportunity to undertake the internationally renowned Thoroughbred Breeding Management course at the Irish National Stud.

Mackenzie Porter graduated from TBA Fast Track in 2024. She completed her 12-month placement at Widden Stud and since graduating in May 2025 has continued to build her career at Widden. We wish her all the best for new challenges in the year ahead.

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) announced in October that the 2025 Nolan Scholarship was awarded to TBA Fast Track graduate Mackenzie Porter.

The Irish National Stud hosted 24 graduates in June from the 2025 Thoroughbred Breeding Management course, including our own Sam Thompson, who has been expanding his knowledge and experience in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Nolan Scholarship was established in memory of the late Basil Nolan Jnr, a highly respected and much-loved member of the Australian thoroughbred breeding community.

A number of students were recognised for their exceptional performance and contribution over the duration of the course with Sam taking the award for Best Portfolio of Assignments.

Unit a tribute to Merrick

BY TIM ROWE • ROWE ON MONDAY • DECEMBER 22, 2025 Seventeen kilometres off the main road, in the picturesque Widden Valley, phone reception is hit and miss.

That’s why staff at Widden Stud, when traversing the 8000-acre thoroughbred property, use twoway radios to communicate.

For more than three decades, David Merrick was identified over the two-way as ‘Unit Five’. Sadly, after a battle with cancer, Merrick died in February this year.

It prompted a group of Widden staff and friends to name a colt by Supido, who was bought by trainer Ciaron Maher at January’s Magic Millions for $80,000, after Merrick.

And that promising colt, known as Unit Five, could return to the Gold Coast in the coming weeks after impressively winning the Magic Millions Vic 2YO Classic at Caulfield on Saturday.

For the breeders of Unit Five – Widden yearling manager Liam Attwood, stud manager Ben Walsh, nominations manager Matt Comerford, stud financial manager Andrew Swales and former employee Jarrod Robinson – it was a sentimental and satisfying victory.

The nod to Merrick, an influential figure not only at Widden but industry wide, only added to the joy of the debut success – as did the $137,500 first prize money.

But it was far from smooth sailing for the $80,000 Magic Millions graduate who was picked out by Lovatsville’s Sam White and Maher.

“It was all pretty straightforward … but when he got off the truck, when he arrived at the Gold Coast, he stood on his shoe,” Comerford told this column.

“He got a bit of an infection, so fair play to Sam White and Ciaron and Gab Nutt, who was there at the time. After they bought him, they sent him to Bong Bong, and he went really lame.

“It wasn’t a perfect situation, so we said, ‘look, send him back to Widden at no charge to the new

“We knew he was a lovely horse and he was right within six weeks, but then we gave him another sixweek break at the farm.“He never turned a hair. He never, ever, ever dropped any condition, and then we sent him back to Ciaron, and away we went.”

Co-owner Tony Stevens, a friend of White’s and Merrick’s, was instrumental in the naming of Unit Five.

“Tony Stevens was keen to do it and Derek Field’s wife, Marguerite, took a share in the horse and it’s been a pretty good story,” Comerford said.

“We were lucky enough to have to retain a little share in him as well, which is good, and we’ve all had a bit of a spring in our step walking around the office.

“They (Maher stable) have just handled the horse incredibly well and placed him incredibly well.

He’s got a big ownership group and everyone’s up and about.”
