MAGIC MILLIONS 2026
Widden Whinnies
ZOUSTAR MAKES MAGIC THE REIGNING CHAMPION AUSTRALIAN SIRE OF 2024/2025, Zoustar is the pride and joy of Antony Thompson and all the team at Widden Stud. His story started at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in 2012.
Champion 3YO Filly SUNLIGHT. From this incredible start, Zoustar has gone from strength to strength.
– ZOUSTAR standing at Widden – Offered in the very first crop of yearlings by Widden Stud’s NORTHERN METEOR, Zoustar was one of 35 that sold at an average $104,929. His sale price of $140,000 put him comfortably above the average, but well short of the benchmark set by his sire at $420,000. That was the last time Zoustar would be anything but top of the class! The dominant sprinting colt of his generation with wins in the Group 1 ATC Golden Rose and VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes, Zoustar was a champion on the track and quickly became a champion at stud. His very first crop of yearlings at Magic Millions in 2017 produced the Widden Stud bred and sold
Zoustar has sired 73 lifetime SWs worldwide headed by 11 Gr.1 winners across Australia, the UK and the USA with multiple Gr.1 winners Sunlight, ZOUGOTCHA and JOLIESTAR at the top of the honour roll, while his Gr.1 winning colts SCHWARZ, OZZMOSIS and STARLUST (GB) are all now at stud. The leading sire of winners in the world for the past two years, Zoustar is on track to take the title again for 2025/26 after siring an astonishing 295 winners in 2024.
– LOT 330 Zoustar x Graceful Girl –
– LOT 835 Zoustar x Solar Charged –
A stallion at the height of his powers that has produced the earnings of over $175 million, Zoustar has also proven to be sales ring gold producing no fewer than 30 yearlings to sell for $1 million or more. Zoustar has 34 entries for Magic Millions and Widden will offer 11 of those. They include Lot 835, the full brother to Champion 3YO Filly Sunlight, Lot 887, the half-sister to Group 1 ATC Golden Slipper winning sire FARNAN, and Lot 330, the first foal of Gr.1 winning sprinter GRACEFUL GIRL.
– LOT 887 Zoustar x Tallow –
AUSTRALIA’S CHAMPION SIRE Sire of 11 individual Gr.1 winners 73 individual Stakes winners | 132 Stakes performers over $175 million in progeny earnings Australasia’s leading sire – 27 Stakes winners and 6 Gr.1 winners over past 2 seasons Australian record breaking 2023/24 – 208 winners and 364 wins World’s best sire 2024 – 295 winners earning $41.9 million 2025 yearling average – $493,000 from 67 sold

REDOUTE’S CHOICE, ROYAL ACADEMY (USA) and SIR TRISTRAM (IRE) – quite the mix! Jacquinot had the ability his pedigree would suggest and co-trainer Mick Price is a massive fan of the colt who was placed in a Blue Diamond before training on at three to record Gr.1 wins in the ATC Golden Rose and MRC CF Orr Stakes. “Speed, soundness, temperament, and genuine Group 1 ability. Most importantly, Jacquinot had what all good stud colts have – tenacity," said Mick Price. When it came time for yearling inspections, the Magic Millions team headed by Barry Bowditch were more than impressed. They accepted 25 for the Gold Coast in January making Jacquinot the second most represented of all first season sires behind only Australian Horse of the Year, ANAMOE.
– JACQUINOT enjoying his paddock –
JACQUINOT FIRST YEARLINGS SET TO SHINE Widden Stud have enjoyed phenomenal success mining the influential sireline of champion sire ENCOSTA DE LAGO through Northern Meteor and Zoustar in turn, with JACQUINOT now poised to write his own chapter in this evolving story. A grand-son of Encosta de Lago, just like Zoustar, Jacquinot has a flawless female pedigree with his first four dams by champion sires PIERRO,
WIDDEN PRODUCES MAGIC WINNERS The beauty of buying a Magic Millions yearling is their eligibility for a rich program of races scheduled around the country – and no farm has a better record for producing the winners of these races than Widden. We have sold 22 individual winners of Magic Millions incentive races, including eight juveniles, highlighted by three very special youngsters that
Inglis will have their turn as the sales season unfolds with Inglis boss Sebastian Hutch equally enthusiastic. “I have been taken with the progress of Jacquinot's progeny from foals/ weanlings into spring yearlings,” he said. “From what I have seen, he produces strong, well conformed stock with good size and scope. He was an incredibly talented racehorse and, on the evidence of his early stock, he has every chance to be a success at stud." Exciting times ahead!
– The great champion SUNLIGHT –
“SPEED, SOUNDNESS, TEMPERAMENT, AND GENUINE GROUP 1 ABILITY. MOST IMPORTANTLY, JACQUINOT HAD WHAT ALL GOOD STUD COLTS HAVE – TENACITY.” – Mick Price, Trainer –

overwhelming stud success of Ole Kirk (who now stands at a fee of $99,000) it’s not hard to see why breeders have been keen to get in on the ground floor of Southport Tycoon.
captured the rich Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast, a race that is now worth $3 million! DRIEFONTEIN was the first Widden sold juvenile to salute in the 2YO Classic Gold Coast in 2012, followed by LE CHEF in 2015 and the great champion SUNLIGHT in 2018.
With excellent fertility (100+ pregnancies recorded), Southport Tycoon was kept busy during the Spring covering a quality book of mares. We thank everyone for their belief in a young stallion we hold in the highest regard.
Other recent winners of the Magic Millions Race series include MADAM ROUGE (MM Snippets), KRONE (MM Fillies and Mares), SUNSOURCE, HAWKER HURRICANE, INVINCIBLE WOMEN, WYNDAM GLORY, AMISH BOY (MM 2YO Series wins) and Saturday's impressive winner UNIT FIVE. Widden Stud presents 65 yearlings this year, 41 by our own stallions.
WIDDEN WELCOMES SOUTHPORT TYCOON
– SOUTHPORT TYCOON has landed –
When dual Gr.1 winner SOUTHPORT TYCOON arrived at Widden Victoria last year, it was lost on nobody how similar the good-looking chestnut is to his champion sire WRITTEN TYCOON.
TRAPEZE ARTIST has had plenty of success during 2025 with four new Stakes-winners in PIGGYBACK, PINITO, FLYING BANDIT and, most exciting of them all, PANOVA.
Both bred in Queensland at Daandine Stud, they carry the same brand and while Written Tycoon is entering the twilight years of a long and fruitful stud career, it’s all just beginning for his son. A Gr.1 winner of the VRC Australian Guineas at 1600m and the Group 1 MVRC Manikato Stakes at 1200m, Southport Tycoon compares favourably with Written Tycoon’s champion son OLE KIRK. They both won over a similar distance range and both come from strong female families, so given the
TRAPEZE ARTIST FLYING HIGH
– TRAPEZE ARTIST standing at Widden –
The Chris Waller trained three year-old filly blossomed in the latter part of Spring winning the Listed ATC Reginald Allen
Stakes in Sydney before beating the colts to win the Group 3 VRC Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington. Those races have been used by Chris Waller in past years to launch the careers of superstar fillies FANGIRL and AELIANA, so there is a real air of anticipation surrounding Panova and what heights she can reach in 2026. Also keep a watch for his Group placed 3YO fillies TUPAKARA and ARTISTIC VENTURE, plus talented 4YO Stakes performers SHE’S AN ARTIST, MOONLIGHT CIRCUS and BIG SWINGER. Headed to the Gold Coast in January will be his slick 4YO sprinter SPYWIRE, who resumed from a spell to win brilliantly at the Kembla standalone meeting in November. The highest-priced Trapeze Artist yearling in 2023, Spywire was a $520,000 purchase for Ciaron Maher Bloodstock / Group 1 Bloodstock from the Widden draft at Magic Millions. He showed immediate talent winning two of his first three starts to earn a run in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in which he finished third to STORM BOY. He closed out his juvenile season with a fourth to ARABIAN SUMMER in the Magic Millions National 2YO Classic. Back better than ever, he will be looking to add to his already impressive earnings which top $780,000.
WRITTEN BY PINHOOK WINNERS AND RACETRACK SUCCESS The 2025 Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale produced a glowing endorsement for the progeny of WRITTEN BY through the eyes of Asian buyers with five offered and all sold to either Hong Kong or Malaysia at an average $256,000. A Gr.1 winning son of WRITTEN TYCOON, Written By has had three winners from four starters in Hong Kong and is three from three in Malaysia. His five offered at Inglis Ready 2 Race produced some solid pinhook results for their vendors with the top seller a colt from VALUCHY that made $300,000 for Alma Vale Thoroughbreds when snapped up by Fully Profit Pty Ltd, HK.
– WRITTEN BY standing at Widden – A proven source of Stakes-winners with six to his credit, five of them juvenile Stakes-winners, Written By is off and running again with a fresh crop of 2YOs that include the Waterhouse Bott trained colt PLAGIARISM, who was third on debut in the $1 million ATC Golden Gift. Written By has six entries for Magic Millions 2026.
Written By Inglis Ready 2 Race Results
Bred by Widden in partnership with Robert Anderson, Spywire is the best of three winners from four foals to race from Stakes-winner SECRET TRAIL, whose yearling colt by Anamoe is in the Widden draft for 2026 as Lot 781.

LATE NEWS ...
Unit a tribute to Merrick
BY TIM ROWE • ROWE ON MONDAY • DECEMBER 22, 2025 Seventeen kilometres off the main road, in the picturesque Widden Valley, phone reception is hit and miss. That’s why staff at Widden Stud, when traversing the 8000-acre thoroughbred property, use twoway radios to communicate. For more than three decades, David Merrick was identified over the two-way as ‘Unit Five’. Sadly, after a battle with cancer, Merrick died in February this year. It prompted a group of Widden staff and friends to name a colt by Supido, who was bought by trainer Ciaron Maher at January’s Magic Millions for $80,000, after Merrick. And that promising colt, known as Unit Five, could return to the Gold Coast in the coming weeks after impressively winning the Magic Millions Vic 2YO Classic at Caulfield on Saturday.
For the breeders of Unit Five – Widden yearling manager Liam Attwood, stud manager Ben Walsh, nominations manager Matt Comerford, stud financial manager Andrew Swales and former employee Jarrod Robinson – it was a sentimental and satisfying victory. The nod to Merrick, an influential figure not only at Widden but industry wide, only added to the joy of the debut success – as did the $137,500 first prize money. But it was far from smooth sailing for the $80,000 Magic Millions graduate who was picked out by Lovatsville’s Sam White and Maher. “It was all pretty straightforward … but when he got off the truck, when he arrived at the Gold Coast, he stood on his shoe,” Comerford told this column. “He got a bit of an infection, so fair play to Sam White and Ciaron and Gab Nutt, who was there at the time. After they bought him, they sent him to Bong Bong, and he went really lame. “It wasn’t a perfect situation, so we said, ‘look, send him back to Widden at no charge to the new
– UNIT FIVE made a sizzling debut at Caulfield on Saturday – owners, nothing like that at all, and we’ll get him right’. “We knew he was a lovely horse and he was right within six weeks, but then we gave him another sixweek break at the farm.“He never turned a hair. He never, ever, ever dropped any condition, and then we sent him back to Ciaron, and away we went.” Co-owner Tony Stevens, a friend of White’s and Merrick’s, was instrumental in the naming of Unit Five.
“Tony Stevens was keen to do it and Derek Field’s wife, Marguerite, took a share in the horse and it’s been a pretty good story,” Comerford said. “We were lucky enough to have to retain a little share in him as well, which is good, and we’ve all had a bit of a spring in our step walking around the office. “They (Maher stable) have just handled the horse incredibly well and placed him incredibly well. He’s got a big ownership group and everyone’s up and about.”
