Widden Whinnies

JOLIESTAR SHINES BRIGHTEST

IN THE GALAXY OF ZOUSTAR GR.1 WINNERS, NO STAR SHINES BRIGHTER THAN JOLIESTAR, who has recently edged past the mighty champion filly SUNLIGHT to become his highest-ever Stakes earner.

Sourced from Inglis Easter by Cambridge Stud’s Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay for $950,000, Joliestar has been trained throughout her career by Chris Waller, who won the Group 1 MRC Thousand Guineas (1600m) with her as a spring three-year-old.

Since then, the master trainer has honed and refined her sprinting talents and the now five-year-old mare has won the Group 1 VRC Newmarket Handicap, Group 1 BRC Kingsford Smith Cup and, most recently, the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes in brilliant fashion.

Undefeated this preparation, Joliestar looks well placed to add to her $7,189,725 in prizemoney via the $3 million TJ Smith at Randwick on April 4, before she takes on the world at the prestigious Royal Ascot carnival.

Her sire, Zoustar, has 35 entries for Inglis Easter and Widden Stud will present 12 of those yearlings, surely the cream of the crop.

Among them are a full brother and a three-quarter brother-in-blood to triple Gr.1 winner ZOUGOTCHA, as well as a full sister to Gr.1 winner SCHWARZ. The draft also features a filly out of Group 1 ATC Coolmore Classic winner DAYSEE DOOM and a colt out of EMERALD BAY, the full sister to dual Gr.1 winner SHOUT THE BAR.

SIRE OF YOUR NEXT STAR

JUVENILES LEAD TRAPEZE ARTIST RESURGENCE

TRAPEZE ARTIST has had a red-hot run over the summer months and with eight Stakes-winners to his credit is keeping exalted company, with only his sire SNITZEL producing more Stakes-winners this season.

Trapeze Artist has sired three juvenile Stakeswinners, all of them bred by Bert Vieira and his family, and foaled and raised at Widden Stud.

WHERE’S THE CIRCUS won the $500,000 Inglis Nursery in December for the Paul Murray stable, while the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained CHILLY GIRL captured the Group 3 ATC Widden Stakes.

Then the Ciaron Maher-trained SPICY MISS earned a crack at the $5 million Group 1 ATC Golden Slipper with her victory in the Group 2 ATC Sweet Embrace (1200m) at Randwick, where she was game to the line, holding off her rivals to lead home a trifecta for Widden sires beating SCREEN ICON (NICCONI) and BY CHOICE (WRITTEN BY).

The Vieira family sold Where’s the Circus and Spicy Miss as yearlings, but have retained Chilly Girl – and to see her win the Widden Stakes on debut was a delight for the entire team at Widden Stud.

Bert and his family continue to breed top-class horses and Widden is excited to offer, on their behalf, the yearling full sister to Trapeze Artist by Snitzel from TREPPES at Inglis Easter as Lot 161.

FLYING START FOR JACQUINOT

Widden Stud has enjoyed an exciting sales season with a hot response to the first crop of yearlings by dual Gr.1 winner JACQUINOT.

Another member of the ENCOSTA DE LAGO sireline that has been successfully cultivated at Widden Stud, Jacquinot has stamped his stock with quality and athleticism.

Jacquinot had 16 yearlings sell at Magic Millions in January at an average of $218,125. He has continued to produce a steady stream of six-figure yearlings at subsequent sales, most recently at Inglis Premier where his top lot was a colt out of ALL SASSED UP sold to Sutton Racing/B. Rogers/ McKeever Bloodstock for $150,000.

His top seller to date has been the Widden-consigned colt from BONHEUR, who realised $425,000 at the Gold Coast when secured by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock/David Redvers Bloodstock.

He was one of five colts bought in the opening session for this partnership that involves Sheikh Fahad Al Thani’s Qatar Racing.

An attractive bay, very similar to his sire, the colt was bred by Widden in partnership with Robert Anderson and is the first foal of winning I AM INVINCIBLE mare Bonheur, a halfsister to Group placed MISS ARIA from Group 1 VRC Myer Classic winner BONARIA.

Ciaron Maher will also take charge of the second highest priced Jacquinot, with the colt from ASTERIA making $375,000 for Lime Country Thoroughbreds.

To have his two most expensive yearlings heading into the stable of one of the country’s leading trainers, is undoubtedly a feather in the cap for Jacquinot.

UNIT FIVE DELIVERS A WIDDEN STUD FAIRYTALE IN MAGIC MILLIONS

2YO CLASSIC

Widden Stud already held the record for producing more winners of Magic Millions incentive races than any other farm leading into the big day at the Gold Coast in January –and exciting SUPIDO colt UNIT FIVE duly wrote the latest chapter in this ever-unfolding story.

Unit Five became the third winner of the race for Ciaron Maher after previous wins with AWAY GAME (2020) and COOLANGATTA (2022). He became the first two-year-old to win the Classic at only his second career start.

It was also a clear career highlight for young Victorian jockey Tom Stockdale, who delivered an inspired ride from the back of the field to overhaul stablemate TORNADO VALLEY and the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly BY CHOICE, who is by another Widden sire in WRITTEN BY.

An $80,000 purchase out of the Widden Stud draft, Unit Five, a son of Widden’s resident stallion Supido, is raced by a

huge crew of owners, including numerous members of the Widden Stud team.

He was bred by Widden Yearling Manager, Liam Attwood, Stud Manager, Ben Walsh, Finance Manager, Andrew Swales, Sales Manager, Matt Comerford, and then team member Jarrod Robinson – all of whom retained a share in the colt when he was sold. He was named Unit Five in honour of the much-loved David Merrick, longtime Widden Stud Manager and well-respected industry figure, who passed away last year.

Unit Five has now banked almost $1.9 million for his connections.

Unit Five is the second foal and first winner from EN AVAL, a winning mare by TOORAK TOFF that is a half-sister to the dam of juvenile Stakes-winner BELLAZAINE from the family of Gr.2 winner VILLA VERDE, the dam of this season’s flying Group winning filly MY GLADIOLA.

It’s not the first time En Aval has produced the goods for the Widden Stud management team. They were well rewarded for her first foal, a colt by ANDERS, that made $300,000 at Magic Millions in 2024 and again at Inglis Premier when her yearling colt, also by Anders, was purchased by Cumani Racing for $200,000.

BRILLIANT 2YO SEASON FOR WIDDEN STARS

It’s been a stellar start to the season for the two-yearolds from Widden Stud, with five Stakes performers already making their mark. Among them are the previously mentioned Stakes stars – Unit Five, Chilly Girl, Spicy Miss and Where’s The Circus.

Adding to this exciting cohort are the highly regarded Ciaron Mahertrained youngsters, THE NEXT EPISODE and CIARON’S STAR.

There’s always a bit of expectation when champion trainer Ciaron Maher produces a filly called Ciaron’s Star – and she hasn’t disappointed.

The two-year-old claimed an impressive victory at her second race start in the $160,000 ATC Pierro Plate (1100m). Sitting just outside the leader, the daughter of I AM INVINCIBLE kicked on strongly to win by the best part of a length. She backed this up with a luckless fourth in the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes, behind Slipper hopeful PEMBREY.

A $650,000 Inglis Easter purchase from Widden for Ciaron Maher Bloodstock/C. Sneesby, Ciaron’s Star was bred by Widden in partnership out of the Stakes-winning O’REILLY mare BONNY O’REILLY.

Meanwhile, The Next Episode carried just as much hype. The $2.8 million purchase from the Widden draft, equal most expensive yearling by champion sire SNITZEL ever sold, opened his account at Warwick Farm on Wednesday 4th March with a stylish win as a short-priced favourite.

After a less-than-ideal first outing, this preparation has been smooth sailing. With two good recent trials under his belt, The Next Episode was expected to show his true ability, and he delivered. With Jason Collett on board, he settled fifth in the run and, despite being momentarily held up in the straight, it was game over when he found clear running in the furlong.

Bred by Widden Stud in partnership and offered in their draft at the Gold Coast, The Next Episode was purchased by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock with UK-based bloodstock investor Phil Cunningham of Rebel Racing leading the ownership group. His colours are carried by this talented colt, who will be targeted to the Group 3 Widden Kindergarten Stakes and holds an entry for the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes next month.

The Next Episode is a half-brother to Gr.3 placed PRICE TAG. He has a half-brother by I Am Invincible out of HUMMA HUMMA at Inglis Easter as Lot 341.

MULCASTER FINDS FIRST WINNER FOR PORTLAND SKY

A Gr.1 winning son of champion sire DEEP FIELD, Widden Stud’s PORTLAND SKY put his first winner on the board at Ascot in January with a dominant debut victory for talented filly DARYTE, who was purchased by Guy Mulcaster.

Trained by Trevor Andrews and ridden by Willie Pike, Daryte was well fancied on debut and showed a brilliant turn of foot to race clear of the favourite FARNOVA, pulling away at the 100m mark to win the 1000m dash by three lengths.

Second at her next start and fourth in the Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic, Daryte has shown she has plenty of potential. A $55,000 Magic Millions Perth purchase from the Scenic Lodge draft and the second winner from I’M IN LOVE, a winning half-

sister by FASTNET ROCK to Stakes-winner SCRUMDIDDLYUMPTIOUS, odds are there’s plenty still to come.

Portland Sky has also had three additional place-getters, including ORCHID SKY, who was fourth in the Group 3 MRC Chairman’s Stakes.
