At Wickhams we champion small, independent wine makers. In particular we look for wines you won't find in the supermarket, which have a focus on sustainability and which will delight both your palate and your pocket!

1. Classic Spar kling 20 18 Chudleigh, Devon This sparkling wine has a classic fresh nose of green apples with hints of pineapple. The bubbles are fine and persistent.

On the palate it is dry and shows plenty of fresh green apple with a touch of biscuitiness.

About the W inemaker : Ben Hulland Huxbear Vineyard The vineyard is set in the lush, gently sloping hills near Chudleigh. Owners Ben and Lucy Hulland describe themselves as makers of boutique English wine, which neatly sums up their approach to wine making.

They don?t aspire to producing large volumes, it?s all about producing unique wines that they can be proud of.

2. Pinot Noir Spar kling Rosé 20 20 Chudleigh, Devon Pale salmon pink colour, with an abundance of fine bubbles. This is a well-balanced, delicate and dry rosé with complex notes of peach and red berries.

4. Ar cas Pinot Noir 20 21 Chudleigh, Devon Smooth and refined with aromas of blackberries, violets, and liquorice.

There's a touch of vanilla and clove spice from its time spent in oak. It is unfiltered, medium bodied with an expressive palate.

5. Or ange Bear 20 21 Chudleigh, Devon

The colour is pale yellow. The nose is peach, honeydew melon and pineapple. The palate is smooth and balanced, with notes of stone fruits, cinnamon, butter and coconut.

Well balanced with a rounded mouthfeel, this skin fermented, wild ferment wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. It has aromas of peach, stone fruit and vanilla, with a well developed palate.

The Lunaria range replaces plastic capsules with wool ties from sheep that graze in their vineyards.

A soft and pleasant Italian white wine with aromas of citrus, ripe pear, peach and orange blossom.

The palate is clean and rich with a pleasing mineral complexity and a long finish.

The palate is soft and smooth with notes of sweet black cherries and blackcurrants. On the finish are notes of cinnamon and cloves, all supported by lovely soft tannins.

7. Rock Angel 20 22 Provence, France From a selection of parcels from the famous Château d'Esclans.

With its magnificent pale pink colour and golden glints, this wine reveals fine tangy red fruit and toasted aromas.

Borther and sister Anne and Antoine Malassagne are the 4th generation to own this independent Champagne house. They are dedicated to sustainability, introducing beehives to the vineyards nearly a decade ago and becoming HVE certified in 2012.

The first impression is floral, followed by rich aromas of white fruit. The palate is buttery and round with a very long lasting finish.

12. Ruther for d Ranch Char donnay 20 19 Napa Valley, USA A ripe, generous and complex Californian Chardonnay with aromas of delicious asian pear and kumquat. A rich, creamy palate of fresh lemon grass spice and subtle hints of vanilla.

13. Ruther for d Ranch Mer lot 20 18 Napa Valley, USA This silky Californian wine opens with flavours of cassis, vanilla and baking spices, structured with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity.

About the W inemaker : Mar c Zaccar ia Rutherford Ranch Marc's background is all about California winemaking, his resumé is a who's who of Sonoma and Napa Valley.

His formative experience was with Chateau St. Jean, Sledgehammer, Run Riot and Wolf Blass. Prior to joining Rutherford Ranch he was head winemaker for Treasury Wine Estate's Etude Wines.

14. Chenin Blanc "Sur Lie" Reser ve (Concr ete Egg) Laibach Or ganic 20 20 Stellenbosch, South Africa This wine is made from the oldest vineyard on the farm. No additives were used and fermentation was done in old barrels, concrete eggs and stainless steel.

The resulting wine is a refreshing colour with an orangey tint and tropical notes of papaya and white peach.

About the W inemaker : Les Vignobles Foncalieu A union of coopera -tives anchored in the heart of Languedoc, Foncalieu have vineyards from the Corbières massif to the banks of the Mediterranean, from the Mistral swept hillsides to the sun-caressed plains between Carcassonne and Beziers.

Since 2007 they have been committed to sustainable development. They seek to preserve their vineyards by supporting members to implement sustainable practices, such as protecting biodiversity, adopting drip irrigation and, installing grass strips.

15. Hacienda el Ter ner o Cr ianza "Tor no" 20 17 Rioja, Spain The name "Torno" stems from the old Monastery; the monks would place food and clothing onto the base of a rotating door which they would torno so that the people outside could get to them without looking out.

It was aged for 12 months in French barrels. It shows violets, cherries, black fruits with spices and hints of caramel

16. Piquepoul Rosé Foncalieu 20 21 Languedoc, France Pale pink in colour, this rosé has a delicate nose of cherry blossom, strawberries and peaches.

The palate is fresh with summer berries and notes of crushed rose petals. All balanced perfectly with lively acidity.

17. Le Ver sant Gr enache Rosé 20 22 Languedoc, France The deliciously perfumed nose combines sweet hints of strawberries and raspberries and more floral aromas of rose and orange flower. The palate is sweet and silky, wonderfully balanced and enlivened by hints of citrus zest.

18. Le Ver sant Viognier 20 22 Languedoc, France

Clos du Vieux Bourg

Rich aromas of apricot, ripe peach and ginger. Strong and generous with a creamy texture and a long lingering finish thanks to some ageing on the fine lees.

Dominique is a 14th generation winemaker, his family have been making wine in Morgon since 1590.

19. Petit Par adis 20 22 Saint Chinian, France Only 1% of Saint Chinian wines are white, which makes Petit Paradis as precious as it is rare. It is a complex, generous wine with white fruit and quince jam notes.

Dominique established the successful Maison Piron, which he sold in 2020. He kept the historic family vineyards and purchased the church of Saint Pierre de Corcelles to house the Clos du Vieux Bourg winery.

?I decided to dedicate one last little slice of life to this beautiful profession. In another place but still in this beautiful vineyard, as a simple winemaker looking for the best rather than the most,? says Dominique.

Fruity and saline . The nose expresses lovely white flesh fruit whilst the palate has the subtle citrus fruit flavour of pomelo.

21. Clos du Vieux Bour g Cinque Ter r es, Mor gon 20 20 Beaujolais, France There are rich aromas of kirsch, cherry, plum and unique spices. Ready to drink now, but like many Morgon's this could be cellared for up to five years. Luscious in youth it will improve with time.

22. Clos du Vieux Bour g Au Bois Retour, Régnié 20 21 Beaujolais, France The nose bursts forwards with aromas of wild strawberries, cherries and redcurrants. The palate has well balanced acidity, gentle tannins and a hint of minerality. The flavours are of red summer fruits with an enticing spicy note.

Provence, France The palest of pinks displaying refreshing yet subtle aromas of iodine, citrus and white -flesh fruit. The palate is elegantly structured with good acidity. It has a coolness and beautiful minerality with a long, satisfying finish.

Axminster, Devon A well-rounded dry wine, with subtle buttery flavours and aromas of peach turnover and honey. There are stone fruit flavours with a touch of orange, nuts and toffee.

About the W inemaker : James Lamber t Lyme Bay Winery James' aim is to produce the best wines, from the best fruit, from the best growers, in the best locations. It's why the grapes don't always come from Devon.

27. Lyme Bay Pinot Noir 20 21 Axminster, Devon This shows a deep red colour with lighter edges. The nose has intense red fruit combined with smoky, vanilla oak and mild tobacco. The palate presents notes of cherry, plum, blackcurrant, strawberry all finished with toasty oak. The mouth-watering finish lingers.

28. Henner s Gar dner Str eet Classic 20 20 Herstmonceux, Sussex Classic floral and elderflower notes that you expect from Bacchus. All married with a touch of stone fruit from the Chardonnay.

On the palate there's red apple and wild fennel; the barrel fermented Chardonnay gives mid palate weight and structure to a wine that ultimately finishes with a brisk acidity.

29. Henner s Native Gr ace Bar r el Fer mented Char donnay 20 20 Herstmonceux, Sussex The nose has apple, lemon and stone fruit aromas with some toasty and buttery notes and a citrus streak. The mouth is full of delicate spice and creamy, textural richness from time spent in barrel.

The freshness and natural acidity of the wine gives this excellent ageing potential.

30 . Henner s Br ut Rosé NV Herstmonceux, Sussex This pink sparkler has notes of rhubarb and classic English red berry fruit flavours including raspberries and redcurrants. A minimum of 18 month ageing on the lees adds delicate creaminess.

About the W inemaker : Rob MacCulloch MW Hattingley Valley, Hampshire Rob has over 20 years of experience. He learned his skills in both cool and warm climates, making wine from Margaret River in Australia to the Mosel Valley in Germany.

At Hattingley Valley, he is responsible for leading the team of winemakers and overseeing the creation of their award-winning still and sparkling wines.

Hattingley Valley "Still" Pinot Noir 20 20 Alresford, Hampshire A delicate English red wine bursting with aromas and flavours of cherry, raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate, accented by hints of toast and dark chocolate. The fine tannins and balanced acidity provide an elegant structure and silky finish.

This English wine has a lovely nose of elderflower and grapefruit with hints of tropical fruit. On the palate it is clean and crisp with lovely gooseberry and elderflower flavours, finished with just a touch of citrus.

Langham Dr y W hite 20 20 Blanford Forum, Dorset Florals, tropical passionfruit, and mandarin peel take the lead on the nose whilst the palate throws multiple suggestion and flavours; there is crunchy green apple, tart grapefruit, smooth lemon mousse and aromatic fennel. This stunning wine finishes with a whip of salinity which makes it the ideal partner to all manner of seafood, or just to enjoy served cool on a warm day.

35. Montaia Pignoletto Fr izzante Emilia Romagna, Italy This is a sophisticated, semi-sparkling Italian wine. Call it a more refined sibling to Prosecco.

A softly spritzy sparkler with the scents and flavours of fresh pears and red apples. The Pignoletto grapes for this grow in the relatively cool Imola hills of Romagna, balancing the fruitiness with a refreshing edge and light bubbles. The finish is dry and elegant.

A fine and pure expression of Gavi with pretty aromas of flora, citrus and green apple combined with more complex hints of frangipane. The palate has apple and lemon characters, and an appealing weight and minerality. The finish is textural, long and defined.

37. Gir ibaldi "Caj" Bar ber a 20 19 Piedmont, Italy Brimming with lively red fruit like cherries and mulberries, with a bit of cassis and damson in the mix. Eight months in oak barrels has left a light trace of spice. Lifted and tangy on the finish.

38. Gir ibaldi "Raver a" Bar olo 20 17 Piedmont, Italy From the cru vineyard of Ravera this is a complex, powerful Nebbiolo. The initial sense is of bright red fruit - strawberries, cherries and wild berries. Then there is a smooth dark chocolate undercurrent punctuated with vanilla and spice.

About the W inemaker : Gir ibaldi Family Giribaldi was one of the first Italian vineyards to become organic. Mario Giribaldi is the third generation to make wine assisted by his son and daughter. The wines are a reflection of the people who make them, whether working in a sunny vineyard; the winter snow; in the winery during the harvest; or dressing the bottles to look after the image.

Each is an ambassador which passes on the passion of those who made it.

41. Castello di Quer ceto Chianti 20 20 Tuscany, Italy A blend of 92% Sangiovese and 8% Canaiolo grapes.

The wine is aged in oak barriques for 8-10 months and then gven a further three months in bottle before release. It is medium-bodied with soft tannins and ripe red and black fruit flavours.

42. Castello di Quer ceto Chianti Classico Riser va 20 19 Tuscany, Italy 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo from vines with an average age of 20-40 years and aged in barrels for 10-12 months.

Brilliant ruby red. Complex nose of cherry, rose, cedar, violets and prune. Balanced, soft and elegant body with ripe red fruits.

This will age for up to 20 years.

44. Quer cione Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riser va 20 16 Tuscany, Italy This is an elegant and complex wine, with flower aromas, and flavours of blueberries and undergrowth. It is very harmonious on the palate. With round and fine tannins on the nose and with an intense and long aftertaste.

45. Casali del Bar one 150 +1 Bar ber a 20 21 Piedmont, Italy 150+1 is reference to the collaboration between head winemaker Daniele Ress and the 150 members of the Vallebelbo cooperative where this wine is made.

It is full-bodied and round, with a soft finish of dark chocolate and black pepper.

About the W inemaker : W er ner Schr enk Peter Falke Wines Werner started out as a vineyard assistant at Peter Falke Wines in 2007 and has been head winemaker, viticulturist and general manager since 2012.

Growing up in Paarl, he worked at vineyards during his school holidays and realised his passion for wine when working alongside Adi Badenhorst at Rustenberg.

"To be a good winemaker, you must take the time to understand the land," is his philosophy.

49. PF Ruby 20 17 Stellenbosch, South Africa A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah. This has a deep magenta colour, intense aromas of red fruits and raw cocoa with hints of cinnamon and cloves.

50 . Peter Falke Signatur e Alani 20 18 Stellenbosch, South Africa An elegant red wine with intense notes of cranberries, cherry, white pepper and hints of vanilla. The palate is full bodied with a delicate spiciness and silky tannins.

Silent Noise It?s fair to say that Charlie O?Brien was privy to the inside running on the wine game, being the son of Helen and Kevin O?Brien of Kangarilla Road fame.

After finishing high school in 2016, Charlie O?Brien has worked on home territory in McLaren Vale for Yangarra, Hither & Yon, Gemtree and, of course, Kangarilla Road, as well as at Pikes in the Clare Valley, Pike & Joyce in the Adelaide Hills, and Moss Wood in Margaret River.
