4TH IN THE FALLS FREEDOM FEST
The crowd is gathering as each Fourth of July, the City of Wichita Falls and Sheppard Air Force Base co-hosts 4th in the Falls Freedom Fest, an action-packed celebration featuring live music, family-friendly entertainment, and a dazzling fireworks display over the Wichita River. Held at MPEC’s Festival Park, this annual event unites the community for a day filled with food, fun, and patriotic festivities.
Festivalgoers can grab a bite from a variety of food trucks, offering everything from sizzling barbecue and street tacos to funnel cakes and freshsqueezed lemonade. Shoppers can browse booths from local vendors, while car enthusiasts admire an impressive lineup of classic and custom rides at the car and motorcycle show.
Live music keeps the energy high, creating the perfect soundtrack for a day of celebration. Families will find plenty of ways to keep the kids entertained with games, inflatables, and hands-on activities, while adults can unwind in the beer tent, enjoying an ice-cold drink and a front-row seat to the festivities.
A highlight of the festival is the interactive exhibits from Sheppard Air Force Base, giving visitors a rare opportunity to experience military life up close. Previously, guests have explored an F-16 cockpit and tested their skills with VR simulations.
As night falls, all eyes turn to the sky for a showstopping fireworks display, lighting up the riverfront in a grand tribute to the red, white, and blue. Synchronized to music, the breathtaking show is the perfect way to cap off an unforgettable day.

Springtime in Wichita Falls invites us to embrace the outdoors. The Circle Trail becomes a favorite spot for walkers, joggers, and cyclists alike. I find such peace walking along the Wichita Bluff Nature Area, where the sights and sounds of nature create a serene escape. Whether it’s families enjoying a leisurely stroll, friends riding their bikes, or wildlife making its seasonal debut, the trail is a reminder of the thriving life that flourishes here.
Spring in Wichita Falls is also a time for lively festivals that bring people together in celebration. The St. Patrick’s Day Festival paints downtown green with music, dancing, and festive cheer, while Cajun Fest serves up bold flavors that transport attendees straight to the heart of Louisiana. These springtime festivals showcase the unique culture and energy of our city, making them must-attend events for locals and visitors alike.
Spring also means the highly anticipated return of the After Hours Artwalk. This beloved event transforms downtown into a hub of creativity and community. With an iced chai from one of our downtown coffee shops in hand, I enjoy soaking in the live music and marveling at the creativity of our local artists and artisans.
As spring begins to fade into summer, the excitement only grows. Summer in Wichita Falls is a season of endless possibilities, where the warm sun and long days invite us to dive into new experiences. Local parks take center stage in summer, offering shady retreats and lively gathering spots. Families set up picnics, and children splash joyfully in Dr. Park’s Splash Pad or create melodies at Lucy Park’s Sound Garden.
Our city’s summer celebrations bring an infectious energy to Wichita Falls. The Hotter’N Hell Hundred transforms the city into a hub of excitement. Over 10,000 participants from across the country converge to Wichita Falls to tackle the rigorous course, cheered on by enthusiastic spectators lining the streets. The event doesn’t end with the race—the downtown area buzzes with activity well into the evening. The Hotter’N Ale bar crawl and the lively downtown block party bring live music, delicious food, and cold drinks, turning the city into a celebration of camaraderie and community.
What truly sets Wichita Falls apart, though, is its people. Our city’s charm lies not just in its scenic trails or energetic festivals but in the spirit of the community. According to experts, time spent outdoors is essential for mental and physical health. For those seeking the benefits of outdoor time, Wichita Falls is fortunate to have River Bend Nature Center, a 20-acre non-profit attraction dedicated to connecting families with nature.
River Bend Nature Center offers countless opportunities for fun and learning. Visitors can interact with animals, photograph butterflies, and shop for unique souvenirs. The center features educational exhibits such as the River Bottom Forest Trail, the Ruby N. Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, Peyton’s Place, the Bryant Edwards Learning Center, and the United Children’s Garden.
In 2025, the center will undergo exciting renovations, including the addition of two interactive water tables. The first, a Water Cycle table, will feature illuminated, dynamic elements such as the sun, clouds, mountains, rivers, fields, dams, and a lake. With a pushstart mechanism, this table will allow students to explore natural processes in an engaging way. This site offers approximately five miles of multi-use trails on approximately 300 acres that are open to hikers as well as riders. Adults can rent a paddleboard or two-seater kayak. A limited amount of binoculars, bird books, and fishing equipment are available on loan, or ask about their explorer packs. Lake Arrowhead is a participant in the Junior Ranger Youth Explorer Program.
Bring the children to a state park and help them discover that life’s better outside! Each youth explorer can participate in the Junior Ranger program by visiting the park’s headquarters and speaking with a park ranger.

Searching for a way to celebrate the Wichita Falls centennial back in 1982, Roby Christie, of the Wichita Falls Bicycle Club, proposed a bicycle ride – One hundred miles in 100 degree heat, coining the name: Hotter’N Hell Hundred. Today, the race is one of the oldest and largest cycling events in the nation. Over 13,000 riders from across the globe come to Wichita Falls, for 4 days of challenging and inspiring activities.
The weekend events include the race with route distances of 10K –25 mile – 50 mile – 100K – 75 mile – 100 mile, an off-road ride and run, gravel grinders, USAC road race and crits, a consumer show, and a spaghetti dinner and breakfast buffet.

The most expansive trail in town is the impressive Circle Trail, which currently stretches over 20 miles. This trail weaves throughout the city of Wichita Falls in multiple sections: the Wichita River section, the Holiday Creek section, the Seymour Highway section, the Barnett Road section, and the Wichita Bluff section. These wide concrete pathways offer scenic views of the city’s lakes, rivers, trees, and wildlife. There are also covered shelters, picnic areas, and benches along the way for travelers to stop at and have a rest. In addition, several handy bike repair/tire pump stations are located along the trail for bicycle maintenance.
The Circle Trail is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists year-round, but motor vehicles are strictly prohibited. The trail is available any day, so get out and explore Wichita Falls!
