CINCO:

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

It’s springtime in The Falls, the most gorgeous time of year. The city does a masterful job with landscaping year round, but they always outdo themselves every spring. I find so much enjoyment from the little pops of color everywhere from the multitude of meticulously-cultivated flower beds. While I always find so much to love about our city every season, I know our family dogs Makoto and Blanca have been eagerly anticipating spring.

Spring for us always means longer walks on the circle trail as the weather is perfect for venturing outside. My husband Mark and I have different favorite trails we like to explore each season. In spring, we love to take scenic walks along the Wichita River Trail leading up to the waterfall. In summer, we often choose to take the Lake Wichita Trail as it’s the perfect location to beat the North Texas heat because the dogs can cool off in the lake.

I imagine this year we will be seeing even more cyclists on our walks as we have been awarded the bronze-level award for a second time designating our city as a bicycle-friendly community. The Circle Trail is always a popular location for cyclists as vehicles are not allowed. Although, cycling on the roadways is even safer now that Wichita Falls has incorporated designated bicycle lanes in addition to the previously added shared lanes.

In addition to our walks along the trail, I love to get my daily steps in downtown, especially during the After Hours Artwalk. I know I am not alone in my excitement for the monthly events to start up again. My granddaughter Ryann recently graduated with an art degree. She will often join Mark and me as we partake in the culture of our thriving art community. Afterwards, we will grab a bite to eat at one of the downtown restaurants or a food truck. We will often end our evening by finding a little competitive entertainment in the form of throwing axes, shuffleboard, or cornhole.

Downtown is the epicenter for entertainment especially during the downtown festivals. The St. Patrick’s Day Festival will kick off the festival season this year where I fully plan to get my fill of live music and green beer. The Cajun Fest will soon follow and is one of my personal favorite events. Mark likes to call me the Spice Queen, so I am already dreaming about the food, especially the étouffée and boudin balls.

Whether you enjoy hitting the trails, sipping wine patioside, or rocking out to a live band, I hope to see you out and about this season. It will be far too pretty to stay cooped up indoors.

For many years, Zavala International Dance has graced the stages across Wichita Falls and the surrounding area with its vibrantly colorful dresses and pounding footwork representative of the traditional folk dances of the many regions of Mexico.

With a mission to educate the public and instill pride in today’s Hispanic youth, Zavala can be seen at many events throughout the year, from dancing at local public schools to the annual Loco for Cinco celebration downtown. They are proud to be able to present a varied repertoire and spread the breathtaking beauty of Mexican heritage through dance.

The Wichita Theatre began its life as a spectacular Opera House built in 1908. It opened on Dec. 21, 1908 to a sold-out crowd to see “His Honor, The Mayor.” Following an extensive renovation, the theatre re-opened in 1939 as a state of the art movie theatre. Having come full circle, today the theatre once again produces live musical entertainment on its stage.

At the Main Stage, you can enjoy the show from the historic art deco theatre, or at the Stage 2 Dinner Theatre, you can take in a live stage show while you enjoy a delicious dinner in a premier dinner theater environment!

Watch the paint fly before your eyes and incredible creations unfold! Painters will create the best work they can across three timed rounds. As they work, the audience moves around the easels, allowing them an up close view of the creative process. The only medium used is acrylic paint and the tools allowed are brushes, palette knives or any other non-mechanical implements. At the end of the round, the audience votes for their favorite painting and the top 2 artists move on to the final round with a new canvas. Audience members can also later place bids in a silent auction to take the paintings home.

Regular performances of the various arts, public classes and a variety of other events are featured at the Kemp.

Located outside the Kemp is a beautiful Sculpture Garden which features 11 permanent works and 10 new works each year. The new pieces are unveiled each year in May and are on display for 12 months.

friendly rivalry between two local bankers for the view!

BIG BLUE PROPERTIES

719 Scott Ave.

CITY NATIONAL BUILDING

807 8th St.

Competition often drives innovation. When two people are particularly passionate about their craft, that competition can turn into rivalry. Observers of the Wichita Falls’ skyline are viewing the fruits of one such friendly rivalry between two local banking legends. Vestiges of a simpler time, the buildings stand as monuments to a time when economic success was determined by size.

Joseph A. Kemp and Robert E. Huff originally worked together as board members of the Panhandle National Bank located at the corner of 7th and Indiana. Later in 1892, the two parted ways when Kemp moved on to become the president of the City National Bank at 7th and Ohio with Huff remaining at Panhandle National Bank, later renamed First National Bank. In 1910, Kemp made the first move in the rivalry, choosing a new site for City National Bank at the corner of 8th and Ohio. This building would later become the Holt Hotel. Huff followed suit by announcing a new building for First National Bank to be built at 8th and Indiana and opening in 1915.

Five years later, Kemp built yet another building for City National Bank, this time a 10-story monolith at 8th & Scott. Huff’s First National Bank merged with another banking giant Wichita National Bank to become First Wichita Bank and subsequently moved into the Waggoner Building across the street from City National Bank. The Waggoner Building was remodeled in the 1960s, making it a twelve-story building affectionately known today as Big Blue. Big Blue’s

namesake comes from its unique blue porcelain siding, a clever workaround to hide utility wires and high-velocity air conditioning units.

Once Big Blue was erected, City National Bank went under renovations and emerged at thirteen stories tall. This tit-for-tat would continue with First Wichita Bank adding a 153-foot tall sign with a giant 1 for first at the very top. City National Bank reciprocated with a 51-foot rotating neon sign that could be seen from miles away. When First Wichita Bank purchased an adjacent building and added a six-lane “motor bank” with a parking garage above, City National Bank built a skybridge to a neighboring five story structure that then housed a motor bank, covered parking and the exclusive Wichita Club. When City National Bank added a big clock on the corner, First Wichita Bank installed a larger one that also displayed the temperature.

While the banks that once wrestled for dominion over the Wichita Falls’ skyline no longer occupy the buildings, new local business owners with the grit and determination of the original occupants have breathed new life into the historical landmarks. Landmarks that carry on the legacy of two men who forever changed the landscape of Wichita Falls.

This life-size bronze sculpture by artist Jack Stevens is of a Comanche woman, her child, and two braves on horseback. Set in the natural beauty of rock & flowing water near the site of the original waterfalls.

KELL HOUSE HERITAGE CENTER

900 Bluff St. | 940.723.2712

kellhouseheritagecenter.org

The Kell House Heritage Center is a step back in time to the early 20th century. Built in 1909, the Kell House was the home of Frank Kell and his family for seventy years.

The Wichita County Heritage Society purchased the property and converted it into a museum that opened to the public in 1981. The Museum harkens back to the romance of the Victorian Era, with period rooms and family treasures. It features original family furnishings, textiles, decorative art, and historic clothing.

Tour the home of this pioneer businessman to learn the history of Wichita Falls through the eyes of the man who helped shape its present and future. Tours of this local, state, and national landmark include stories of the Kell family, the city that grew around them, and their contributions to the community and nation.

The museum is also the venue to community events and host to weddings, rehearsal dinners, anniversary parties, showers, meetings, and other special occasions.

MUSEUM OF NORTH TEXAS HISTORY

720 Indiana Ave. | 940.322.7628

museumofnorthtexashistory.org

Museum visitors are always greeted with friendly North Texas hospitality.

When visiting Wichita Falls, a stop at the Wee-Chi-Tah sculpture is a must. It offers a moment to appreciate the artistry, history, and the profound significance it brings to the community.

The sculpture’s presence contributes to the cultural identity of the community, honoring the history and contributions of Native American peoples.

Featured temporary exhibits ensure there is always something new to see year-round. Visit their website for more information about featured exhibits. Permanent exhibits include the collections of military service memorabilia like artifacts from the Civil War, or see handmade, highly detailed replicas of naval vessels. Visit Heritage Hall to see the vast collection of western hats known as “Nat’s Hats”, items from the inside of the old Monroe Street post office, or lifesize replica storefronts.

WICHITA FALLS VISITOR GUIDE 2024 SPRING/SUMMER EDITION
Wichita Falls has been once again recognized as a Bronze Medal Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists

Wichita Falls is well known in the cycling world for hosting one of the oldest and largest events in the country. The Hotter N Hell brings over 13,000 cyclists annually to brave a hundred miles in a hundred degree heat. However, Wichita Falls is a cycling community year round.

Wichita Falls has been once again recognized as a Bronze Medal Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. The award has only been bestowed to 480 communities in the nation, and Wichita Falls was the only city recognized from Texas this year. The city has continued their work to make a better place for cycling even after

first being awarded in 2019. Recently, designated bike lanes have been marked throughout the city.

The city-wide Circle Trail offers cyclists a designated place to ride without motorized vehicles. The ten-foot-wide trail of reinforced concrete is currently twenty miles long with four miles to be added in the future. Nature lovers can take advantage of the portions of the trail that runs alongside the Wichita River, the shoreline of Lake Wichita and through the Wichita Bluff Nature Area.

Wichita Falls is also home to the best urban off-road trail in the

state. The Wee-Chi-Tah Off Road Trail is open year round hosting both dirt and gravel events. The thirteen mile trail is full of challenging twists, turns, and descents due to the many man-made obstacles (including a bridge) as well as short, punchy climbs and switchbacks, all while surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Lucy Park.

Wichita Falls welcomes cyclists of every age and ability. Each cyclist is not just a participant but a welcomed member of a thriving community joined by a spirit of camaraderie and passion for the sport.

FLY WICHITA FALLS

SAVE TIME AND MONEY . . . FLY WICHITA FALLS

What do you get when you combine an investment of over $32 million dollars with community and business leaders from around the Wichita Falls region? The result is the innovative Wichita Falls Regional Airport. This is a game changer. The Wichita Falls Regional Airport (SPS) provides an important link to the Dallas Fort Worth Airport as well as an excellent facility for Charter Flights and private aircraft.

The next time you fly out of the Wichita Falls Regional Airport, you can grab a tasty bite to eat. Suga B’s restaurant is a new addition to the airport and promises to serve up some good eats to hungry travelers. The menu has a little bit of everything, from their signature honey-themed dishes, to southern cuisine, to Creole and Mexican food. Owner and head chef Brandy Belk is also a pastry chef, so Suga B‘s is sure to have something to satisfy your sweet tooth! Flyers can grab a quick cup of coffee and breakfast snack early in the morning, or just sit and stay a while.

Also located inside the airport is the Jenny to Jet Exhibit. This one-of-a-kind display with the very first U.S. military training plane and a modern, current training jet shows the world Wichita Falls’ unique history and proud commitment to our Armed Forces.
