HOTTER’N HELL 100

More than 10,000 professional and amateur cyclists descend upon Wichita Falls each August for the Hotter N’ Hell 100, the world’s oldest and hottest bike ride. Downtown Wichita Falls is the spot to cheer on some of the world’s premier cyclists. Spectators also enjoy local eats, shopping, and entertainment all within walking distance and an abundance of free parking.

After the race, Downtown Wichita Falls transforms into a family-friendly block party with food trucks, craft beer, yard games, a DJed dance party and more.

In addition to the race and block party, the Hotter N’ Ale attracts a more leisurely crowd that strolls in a 0.5k walk hitting some of the best nightlife spots with plenty of drinks and entertainment along each stop.

Each year, the carefully-crafted theme of the event sets the tone for the walk. Last year’s theme was Camp Hotter N’ Ale. Campers wore their camp colors and reported to their designated camp counselors who led the way with rousing chants and songs to local eats, drinks, and games. During the event, campers enjoyed activities like giant cornhole and a retro dance party with DJ MF Maniac.

This year’s theme has yet to be announced. Follow Downtown WF Development to stay in the know and plan your costume early for this annually sold out event.

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

When the Bradford pear trees explode in a sea of white blossoms, I know it’s only a matter of time before diners move from the cloistered restaurant interiors to the tempting outdoor patios to feel the rejuvenating spring breeze and perhaps take in a performance by a local musician. While there’s plenty to do year-round in Wichita Falls, spring and summer is when our historic downtown comes to life with a buzz of activity as so many events are able to take advantage of the sunshine and expansive outdoor spaces.

It’s never hard to find something interesting to do in Wichita Falls, our numerous downtown annual festivals are a testament to that. Practically every month the Depot Square Historic District is transformed for another themed event complete with live music, food, and entertainment. I eagerly anticipate seeing what downtown businesses create for each festival whether its new dishes, desserts, or cocktails. In addition to the festivals, the After Hours Art Walks are one of my favorite events that returns each spring.

The WFTX sign at Park Central marks the spot for where I prefer to begin my After Hours Art Walks experience each month. It’s perfect for taking in a musical performance or grabbing a bite to eat from a local food truck. I often indulge in an iced chai latte from one of the many local coffee shops before starting my journey down the streets perusing the various wares from artists, artisans, and vendors. My husband and I prefer ending our night throwing axes at The Depot. Our granddaughter also enjoys joining us whenever she can break away from her college studies.

I love living in Wichita Falls. What motivated me to raise my family here, and then motivated my children to stay and raise their own, is that Wichita Falls is really the perfect size. There’s never a shortage of great food, entertainment and shopping, but we aren’t so big that we lose sight of our identity or tight-knit community. Wichita Falls has always been a place where people look out for their own. So many of the downtown businesses collaborate together on new offerings or lend retail space ensuring their customers alway have the best local goods available.

New businesses are springing up all the time. My husband is particularly excited about The Golf Factory opening up soon, so he can test out his golf swing in their state-of-the-art indoor facility. I’m proud of the growth we have experienced and am forever in awe of the creativity and ingenuity of our business owners, artists, and artisans. Each season I’ve worked on this visitor’s guide, the offerings for locals and guests improve with every issue. Whether you are a local, visiting, or just passing through, come be a part of our community and see why everyone is falling in love with the Falls.

This 20-acre environmental education facility connects people to the natural environment of Texas.

One of the most popular exhibits, the Ruby N. Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, is a 7,000 sq. ft. glass building with native butterflies, prairie grasses, and wildflowers.

There are many ways to explore the Rolling Plains at River Bend Nature Center. Walk the trails and gardens, or picnic under the open air pavilion, take part in a scavenger hunt or purchase nature detective bags from the gift shop. Special activities are on select Saturdays that include Science Saturday, Explorations in Nature, Nature Tot’s Story Time, and Creature Feature.

KIWANIS PARK

Kiwanis park is home to four ball fields, two bathrooms, a large covered pavilion with 12 tables, and four picnic shelters. The park also has a 5 to 12 year old playground, kite flying areas, and is the home to the Wichita Falls Prairie Dog town.

The new addition (featured here) is geared with equipment and activities specifically for 2 to 5 year old children, like a Hedra Scout central play structure, an Omni Spin, toggle riders, cozy dome, and a ZipKruz. It is located next to the 5 to 12 year old playground so parents can monitor children in both play areas.

LUCY PARK

Lucy Park is a 178-acre regional park located in the center of the city. The park is in a bend of the Wichita River which gives it a natural setting with huge pecans, cottonwoods, and numerous other species of native and introduced trees.

For hiking and biking enthusiasts, there is a 1.7 mile concrete trail circling the park. This is the west starting point for the city-wide Circle Trail System and passes right by ‘The Falls’.

In addition to three modular playgrounds and picnic areas, the park has two public restrooms, basketball goals, one concrete volleyball court, and an 18 hole disc golf course. Recently the City of Wichita Falls has been busy replacing the old baskets at Lucy Park’s disc golf course. Future plans include replacing the baskets at Lake Wichita Park and putting another 18-hole course in Williams Park on the eastside of Wichita Falls.

Love music and the outdoors? Located just past the log cabin and swimming pool near the Lucy Park pavilion and playground you will find the new Sound Garden. Fun for all ages, these instruments were installed so children and adults can discover and explore music together in an outdoor setting. Positioned amongst the natural beauty of the park, the sounds of these durable instruments will ring for generations.

CIRCLE TRAIL

The most expansive trail in town is the impressive Circle Trail, which currently stretches over 20 miles. This trail weaves throughout the city of Wichita Falls in multiple sections: the Wichita River section, the Holiday Creek section, the Seymour Highway section, the Barnett Road section, and the Wichita Bluff section. These wide concrete pathways offer scenic views of the city’s lakes, rivers, trees, and wildlife. There are also covered shelters, picnic areas, and benches along the way for travelers to stop at and have a rest. In addition, several handy bike repair/ tire pump stations are located along the trail for bicycle maintenance.

The Circle Trail is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists year round, but motor vehicles are strictly prohibited. The trail is available any day, so get out and explore Wichita Falls.

LAKE WICHITA PARK

Lake Wichita Park is a large 234 acre park located on the north shore of Lake Wichita.

Within the park itself is a 2.6 mile concrete hike and bike trail that runs from the southern tip of the park at Fairway Avenue to the dam on the lake. The trail continues northward all the way to Lucy Park. There are public restrooms, a modular playground, basketball goals, drinking fountains, and many picnic areas.

The park has a large reservable picnic shelter with 10 picnic tables that will seat approximately 60 people. There are also 2 lighted baseball fields, 2 lighted softball fields, 3 lighted football fields, and an 18 hole disc golf course. The park has the only model airplane landing strip in Wichita Falls. It is also the location of the Off-Leash Dog Park.

The Depot Axe Throwing Lounge made its debut in January of 2022, and since then people have been coming out to try their luck. All you have to do is throw your axe at a target on the wall. Seems easy, right?

However, this is no ordinary axe throwing lounge. The Depot’s fourteen axe throwing lanes are furnished with projectors that cast striking images onto the wooden target area. Guests can throw their axes at a selection of 20-30 images.

If guests want to take a break from throwing, there is still plenty to do. The Depot also offers pool, shuffleboard, darts, and cornhole. They serve draft beer, bottled beer, sodas and wine, but they also have a full bar, concentrating on Prohibition Era cocktails and high end whiskey and bourbon.

The Depot is family-friendly until 8pm. Kids 12 or older can throw with a parent or guardian’s supervision. Must be 18+ after 8pm.

Partitioned into two parts, the “Jenny” has one of five Curtiss Jennys left and commemorates Call Field, the United States Army Air Corps training camp during WWI. The exhibit includes vehicles used at Call Field, WWI uniforms, equipment, multimedia displays and more.

The “Jet” portion features Sheppard Air Force Base, a completely restored T-38 Talon jet trainer and a jet engine from an A-10 Warthog. This one-of-a-kind display shows the history and current missions of Sheppard Air Force Base.

This aviation museum expresses the unique history and proud commitment to our Armed Forces, in honor of the brave who trained at Call Field to present day flying from Sheppard Air Force Base. The Jenny to Jet exhibit perfectly highlights World War I avionic history and modern USAF pilot training.

It started out innocently enough, but then most swindles do. In 1919, Wichita Falls was a crowded place. Area businessmen were enjoying the first of several region-wide oil booms. Offices were located wherever space could be found, and “coat pocket” business addresses were as common as anything made of bricks and mortar. Investors practically stood in line to buy stock in a construction project proposed by the confidence man J.D. McMahon, a petroleum landman and structural engineer from Philadelphia. He probably was a genuine building engineer or he could never have presented his $200,000 project so convincingly!

The contracts were signed, money changed hands and construction began. Trouble was, none of the investors seemed to notice that the blueprints, which called for dimensions measured in square feet, were actually executed in square inches until after the property, still standing after 100 years, was finished. By then, he had long checked out of the hotel, taking the bulk of his ill-gotten $200,000 along. You can still visit The Littlest Skyscraper today.

This life size, multi-part sculpture by local artist Jack Stevens depicts a Wichita Falls legend come to life.

So the legend goes...this area was originally home to the Wichita Indians who migrated to the Red River region. Tradition says that a band of Comanches came to the Big Wichita River to cross and sent a squaw into the water to test its depth. She replied “Wee Chi Tah”, which meant “waist deep.” Thus, the name Wichita Falls was derived.

The Kell House Heritage Center is a step back in time to the early 20th Century. Built in 1909, the Kell House was the home of Frank Kell and his family for seventy years.

The Wichita County Heritage Society purchased the property and converted it into a museum that opened to the public in 1981. The Museum harkens back to the romance of the Victorian era, with period rooms and family treasures. It features original family furnishings, textiles, decorative art, and historic clothing.

Tour the home of this pioneer businessman to learn the history of Wichita Falls through the eyes of the man who helped shape its present and future. Tours of this local, state and national landmark include stories of the Kell family, the city that grew around them, and their contributions to the community and nation.

The museum is also the venue to community events and host to weddings, rehearsal dinners, anniversary parties, showers, meetings, and other special occasions.

THE J.S. BRIDWELL AGRICULTURE CENTER IS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR A LARGE CASUAL EVENT.

The J.S. Bridwell Agricultural Center, located on the North banks of the Wichita River, was the first phase of the Multi-Purpose Event Center project completed in 1995. Named in honor of Wichita Falls rancher and businessman Joseph S. Bridwell (1885-1966), the J.S. Bridwell Agricultural Center hosts

everything from dog shows and rodeos to fundraiser galas, including glitzy affairs such as the American Cancer Society’s Cattle Baron’s Ball, and Young Life’s Round Up benefit. If you’re looking for a rustic-style venue that still adds a touch of class to your event, you’ve come to the right place!

The J.S. Bridwell Ag Center includes an indoor arena with seating for 1,200 people, as well as direct access to a spacious Stall Barn directly adjacent. With 50,000 square feet of usable floor space, the Stall Barn has immense customizable potential and can be transformed for your event’s unique needs. In

addition, office space is available as needed. Paved and gravel parking lots are within easy reach of the building entrances, and for your out-of-town guests, RV hookups are available on-site, allowing for convenient overnight stays. The next time you fly out of the Wichita Falls Regional Airport, you can grab a tasty bite to eat. Suga B’s restaurant is a new addition to the airport and promises to serve up some good eats to hungry travelers. The menu has a little bit of everything, from their signature honey-themed dishes, to southern cuisine, to Creole and Mexican food. Owner and head chef Brandy Belk is also a pastry chef, so Suga B‘s is sure to have something to satisfy your sweet tooth! Flyers can grab a quick cup of coffee and breakfast snack early in the morning, or just sit and stay a while.

Also located inside the airport is the Jenny to Jet Exhibit. This one-of-a-kind display with the very first U.S. military training plane and a modern, current training jet shows the world Wichita Falls’ unique history and proud commitment to our Armed Forces.
