It’s hard to believe but 25 years ago, right here in the District, elected officials were grilling a young attorney named Anita Hill after she accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. The year was 1991. President George H.W. Bush had nominated Thomas, then a federal Circuit Judge, to succeed retiring Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall on the Supreme Court. Senate hearings on his confirmation had been initially completed and there had been little opposition. Then a report of a private interview of Hill by the FBI, which described several instances of sexual harassment when Thomas served as her supervisor at the U.S. Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, was leaked to the press.
