D.C. Health Officials Preparing for Ebola By Barrington M. Salmon WI Staff Writer@bsalmondc Since Thomas Eric Duncan died of Ebola and two nurses who treated him contracted the disease, there’s been a tug-of-war between health officials seeking to assure the public that the virus is under control on one hand

and rising fear and anxiety on the other. In the District, Joxel Garcia, director of the D.C. Department of Health, held an Ebola virus update and did his best to calm residents’ nerves. “We’re fighting real science and fear, and I think fear is in the forefront,” he said at one

point during the Oct. 15 briefing at the Department of Health headquarters in Northwest. “I understand the fear, but if we follow public health and clinical guidelines, we’ll be fine. The disease isn’t endemic in D.C. or the U.S. The virus doesn’t live here. We have to control what we can here.”

“There are some basic things that people are overdoing. If you do, things collapse. You don’t want a 3-ton tank crossing a 2-ton bridge. I’m looking for the weakest link in the workforce, IT systems and other areas.” Duncan, who traveled from Liberia to Dallas several days before he fell ill, is the first person
