Politicians, Residents Analyze Baker’s Van Hollen Endorsement By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer The endorsement of Rep. Chris Van Hollen by Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker III surprised few, but still left area politicians and residents speculating about the timing of Baker’s support.
The early endorsement also left many wondering exactly what went into Baker’s thought process, particularly with at least two powerful state Democrats still mulling whether they will enter the race for the Senate seat being vacated by longtime favorite Barbara Mikulski. “I was a little surprised that
Baker made the endorsement so early,” said County Councilman Obie Patterson (D-District 8) of Fort Washington. “I thought he might have waited to get the sense of the numbers, to take some polls,” said Patterson, 77, who’s backing Rep. Donna Edwards (D-District 4) for the Senate.
Patterson said Baker’s endorsement means a great deal and does carry some weight, but with continued speculation that the ever-popular U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland) and former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele will enter the fray, it’s conceivable that the person who might be deemed the favorite
could change in a hurry. “Cummings would certainly change the dynamics,” Patterson said, noting that the representative is believed to be conducting polls and testing the waters. “I’m hearing more and more that Cummings will be a reality,
