Migrants in Libya Demand Deportation to Safe Place
Migrants in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, are demanding immediate deportation to a safe location due to living conditions in detention centers and ill-treatment by Libyan authorities. Dozens of migrants protested Saturday, Oct. 9, outside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) headquarters in the Libyan capital Tripoli, where protesters held banners. Sudanese migrant Omar Idris claimed that they have been beaten, detained and imprisoned by the authorities. "Of course, we came here to immigrate; we registered with the commission (UNHCR).” Idris said. “We lived in Gargaresh (a town 12 kilometers west of Tripoli). We were beaten and taken to jail, and as you can see, now we are all here; some of us came out of jail yesterday.”
He added, “We have women and children here, and also sick and injured, we are all suffering, and the reason we are here is that we demand immediate deportation to a safe place."
The organization said that approximately 10,000 men, women and children are detained in poor conditions in official detention facilities in Tripoli.
UNHCR officials said that tensions with migrants, demanding urgent aid and their deportation from Libya, resulted in the injury of two staff members and impeded the access of other asylum seekers to the center.
According to Musa Khamis, a migrant from Darfur, Sudan, migrants are not treated equally. "I've been in Libya for two years, here in Tripoli, and now we've been here for ten days without water, food or anything. Why don't they want to let us (into the UNHCR office)? Only Syrians, Ethiopians and Eritreans enter, and they haven't let us in or give us any aid or anything; we have nothing."
Earlier Saturday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) condemned the killing of six people in one of the capital's migrant detention centers.
The development comes a week after authorities rounded up more than 5,000 migrants in a massive crackdown and after U.N.-commissioned investigators said abuses and ill treatment of migrants in Libya amounted to crimes against humanity. WI

When the opening session of parliament in The Bahamas convened on Wednesday, Oct. 6, under the new Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) government, a woman was sworn in as speaker of the House of Assembly for only the second time in that country’s history. Patricia Deveaux, member of parliament for the Bamboo Town constituency, expressed her gratitude to the Bahamian people for the opportunity to serve as speaker of house and pledged “to protect the privileges of this House and of members, so that they can enjoy almost untethered freedom to speak on behalf of Bahamians.” “It is my hope that, notwithstanding our partisan opinions, this parliament will create better relations with each other, while tabling the affairs of the people, in order to create progressive and transforming recommendations, which will ultimately enhance legislative change,” the new speaker declared, adding: “The business of this house will be conducted in an atmosphere of respect. I charge all members to be courteous and respectful to the chair. I charge members to also be courteous and respectful to each other in the conduct of your debates.”
All seven of the PLP women candidates won seats in the House of Assembly in the Sept. 16 general election, and in addition to Ms. Deveaux being named speaker, five of the other winning women candidates hold cabinet-level positions in the new government headed by Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis.
The first female speaker of The Bahamas House of Assembly was Italia Johnson who served in that position from April 9, 1997 to Sept. 2, 2002. WI
October 2021 Message from Department of Aging and Community Living
GUEST COLUMNIST
By Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt Director, DC Health
It’s been 19 months since the pandemic started and I know that times have been tough. Not being able to spend time with family and friends, missing your favorite workout class or even having to limit the places that you’ve visited.
When vaccines became available for District residents over the age of 65 in January, you led the way, setting an extraordinary example for others to follow. You showed everyone that getting vaccinated was the right thing to do for you, your loved ones, and your community. You were shining stars and today over 80% of you are fully vaccinated. We still have more work to do, and I know I can count on each of you to continue to be great role models and ambassadors of the COVID-19 vaccines and other practices that will keep us safe.
If you haven’t received a vaccination, consider getting one today. The COVID-19 vaccines are safe and are the best way to prevent severe illness, hospitalizations, and death. There are over 150 locations in the city where you can receive the COVID-19 vaccine. You or your family can visit vaccines.gov to find the location nearest you and make a plan to get your vaccine at a time that is convenient. If you prefer to get your vaccine in your home, call us at 1-855-3630333 and we will come to you! If you’re vaccinated, call someone who is not vaccinated and encourage them to do so.
If it’s been a while since you’ve received your second dose of the vaccine and you want to be ready for your booster, start making your plan. Find your vaccine card, call your healthcare provider to discuss your options for a booster or visit vaccines.gov to find a location near you. If you need support, you can call 1-855-363-0333.
Last, but not least, flu season is upon us and to ensure that you have protection against the flu this year, get your flu shot. The COVID vaccine does not protect you against flu and the flu vaccine does not protect you against COVID. There were record low numbers of flu cases nationally and in the District in 2020... and we want to keep it that way. So, do all you can today so you can continue to have small family dinners, story time with the grandkids and fellowship with neighbors and friends. Whenever you leave home, remember to take your mask with you and wear it.
Carry plenty of hand sanitizer and continue to wash or sanitize your hands often to avoid the spread of germs. I’ve missed spending time with DC residents at all of the special events, festivals, and celebrations that make us who we are as a city. So let’s do all we can, together, to end this pandemic and reconnect in new and meaningful ways. If you haven’t received a vaccination, consider getting one today. The COVID-19 vaccines are safe and are the best way to prevent severe illness, hospitalizations, and death. There are over 150 locations in the city where you can receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
