FAREWELL TO DISTRICT’S SON
Hundreds attend the public memorial service for Marion Christopher Barry at the Temple of Praise Church in southeast on Monday, Aug. 22. Barry, son of the late former Mayor Marion Barry, Jr. and Effie Barry, died Aug. 14. Mayor Muriel Bowser, the only city official invited to speak, praised Barry for his brilliance, charisma and for having a heart for people that could not be denied. Following the viewing and service, Barry’s maternal grandmother, Polly Lee Harris, and his stepmother, Cora Masters Barry, followed the casket and led the processional of mourners out of the sanctuary. They appeared stunned – unable to believe that at age 36, Christopher Barry’s young life was over. / Photo by Travis Riddick

Schools will begin Monday, Aug. 29 in neighboring Montgomery County and Sept. 6 for schools in Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax County, Virginia.
The District began school Monday, Aug. 22 for its nearly 50,000 public school students. Eleven of the 115 schools opened two weeks ago as part of the District's extended-year program at schools which had at least 55 percent of its students that didn't fully meet expectations on the English and math portions of the standardized assessment tests.
