What’s in Store for America in 2017?

Here are a few reflections from local and national leaders.

DENISE ROLARK BARNES Publisher, The Washington Informer; Chairperson, NNPA Each New Year brings a deep sense of optimism, coupled with faith, that things will be better than they were the previous year. My expectations for 2017 are no different despite the cacophony of exhortations that warn us otherwise. One lesson we learned in 2016 is that we must stop and hear the voices of our poor, alienated and disenfranchised fellow human beings who will find ways to disrupt our lives if we don’t, and rightfully so. In 2017, we must define for ourselves what it will take to “Make America Great Again” and continue to fight for those things that universally work to improve the quality of life for everyone. Education, housing, financial equity, equal justice and political enfranchisement are non-negotiable rights we must continue to protect in 2017.

For African Americans, no year has been without struggle, but each year provides us with the experiences of our ancestors upon which we can lean to bring us another step forward. We got to the end of 2016 by faith, and it will be by faith, combined with our collective efforts, that will lead us in the New Year. As publisher of The Washington Informer and chairperson of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), I know the Black Press of America will listen, educate and advocate for our readers as we have over the past 190 years. Wishing everyone the best in 2017.

FANTASIA Entertainer I recently finished my own tour and would say onstage in every city before the end of my show, that God is my president. In 2017, I will continue to seek and chase after God because He is the only one who can direct us. We need to stop putting so much trust in man and begin to put our trust in God. We need to begin to pray again for our neighbors, for those who are battling cancer, for those who have amazing testimonies. I hope that in 2017 we will stop leaving our homes consumed by anger about simple things. And I believe we would all benefit if we spent less time watching TV or engaging in social media and began talking with people – people who can teach us something.

Society would prefer that we stay in the box. But the ends are limitless if we only become better educated and keep God first.

I have always considered service to community a rewarding and worthwhile pursuit. Since joining the Council of the District of Columbia as an at-large member in December 2012, I have been honored with the opportunity to legislate policy based upon the ideas and concerns of citizens across the District. Every day I am committed to public service by promoting good government, finding solutions to problems, representing constituent interests and confronting the challenges of progress as the District becomes a world class community. As a lifelong resident who returned home after college at UC Berkeley to begin a career and raise a family, I have witnessed many changes in D.C. It is urgent that we do more to accelerate public education reform, create more affordable housing, connect residents to jobs and ensure that neighborhoods are safe, stable and enjoyable communities.

MLK Parade Honors the Past, Moves Forward THE ANNUAL DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PEACE WALK and Parade commenced for the 10th time this year, honoring the life and legacy of the civil rights icon with the theme, "Change is Coming."

More than 1,000 peace walkers and parade participants marched up Martin Luther King Avenue in Southeast on Monday, Jan. 18 to show solidarity, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, radio personality Donnie Simpson and music virtuoso Blake Miles Hopkins.

"The Peace Walk is intergenerational bridging the gap between the older and younger generation," said Ronald Moten, member of the parade committee. "Many times they are on two different sides, one over here and one over there.

It's important to have the parade to remember Dr. King was murdered in cold blood. That's a fact that tends to be forgotten. He died for us, so it should be nothing to come out in the cold for a few hours to honor his sacrifice."

The late Dr. Calvin Rolark, publisher of The Washington Informer, Wilhelmina Rolark, community activist and former Ward 8 Council member, and legendary radio talk show host Petey Greene began the parade in 1979, six years before King's birthday became a federal holiday.

IN RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS DAY, on Monday, Jan. 11, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said that the city will partner with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for its Blue Campaign to increase efforts to combat human trafficking.

Bowser joined Maria Odom, chair of the Blue Campaign, at the newly renovated Office of Human Rights in Northwest for a press conference to announce the partnership, intended to protect society's most vulnerable.

"Our city is better than this, and we do not stand for any abuse of human rights," Bowser said. "This new partnership builds on the District's longstanding commitment to combat and prevent this atrocious crime."

The Blue Campaign, a DHS-led initiative in which law enforcement, government, non-governmental and private organizations work together to combat human trafficking by placing workplace posters in prominent areas to help the public identify and report suspected trafficking.

D.C. government officials will place the posters with the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline number throughout the Metro transit system and at relevant city agencies, and interested businesses will be encouraged to post them as well. WI

Obama's Final State of the Union Address PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA delivered his final State of the Union address on Tuesday, Jan. 12, speaking to Americans who have increased fears of terrorism and feelings of anger due to a Congress that has been more dysfunctional than effective during his two terms in office.

In addition, the president attempted to remain focused, communicating a message of hope and unity despite being in the throes of an especially divisive election season.

The White House, prior to his comments, indicated that Obama would give a "nontraditional" speech that would go above the "dayto-day noise of Washington," honoring our longtime ability to live, work and play as "one American family."

Despite facing resistance on nearly every front from a Republican-controlled House and Senate throughout much of his tenure, he refused to allow any personal disappointments affect his message, taking full advantage of one of his last and best opportunities to address the nation and to provide a framework for the November presidential election.

The president spoke to several issues including guns, immigration reform and refugees from the Middle East. And even with the U.S. coming off of one of its best years for job creation since the 1990s, Americans remain deeply concerned about personal finances, not to mention national security. WI

ADVOCATES and protesters joined Flint, Michigan, residents on Capitol Hill Feb. 3 for a congressional hearing on the city's water crisis to show solidarity and to call for the ouster of Gov. Rick Snyder.

Busloads of concerned citizens and members of the National Action Network (NAN) from Michigan and the District packed the hearing, several of whom testified about the crisis that sparked a nationwide backlash against the Republican governor.

"I am an American citizen and I am absolutely outraged," said Renla Session, a member of Detroit's NAN chapter. "Not only am I related by blood to half of Flint, they are human beings. I've seen the injustices to poor people of all colors." WI

Glenarden Man Charged with Child Pornography, Sex Abuse A GLENARDEN, MD. MAN was charged with child pornography and sex charges for allegedly abusing at least 10 children.

Deonte Carraway, 22, was arrested Feb. 5 after detectives spoke with a victim's relative who called police a day earlier and found a nude picture of Carraway on the child's cellphone, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed Carraway, who worked at Glenarden Woods and Judge Sylvania Woods elementary schools in Glenarden, targeted children ages 9 to 13. He was also the director of the Glenarden Voices of Youth Choir.

Police said he may have recorded sex acts at the school, the Glenarden Municipal Center, the Theresa Banks Memorial Aquatic Center in Glenarden and inside various homes. WI

McDuffie Bill on Crime Passes THE D.C. COUNCIL passed Councilman Kenyan R. McDuffie's (D-Ward 5) Neighborhood Engagement Achieves Results Amendment Act of 2016 (NEAR) on the first reading during their monthly legislative meeting on Monday, Feb. 1 at the John A. Wilson Building in Northwest.

McDuffie touts the NEAR Act as a bill that will approach public safety, by not just addressing crime after it occurs, but also working to prevent crime by treating its root causes for the long term.

"This critical legislation is a step in the right direction and will address the root causes of violent crime in an effective and sustainable way," McDuffie said. "One homicide in the District is too many. This bill addresses crime no matter where it happens in the District whether on the street, train, or in a home."

ONE DAY before Super Bowl 50, superstar Beyonce unexpectedly released a new music video addressing police brutality, Southern culture, Hurricane Katrina and her love for the Black aesthetic.

The reactions to the "Formation" video began pouring in by the thousands on social media anchored by the BeyHive, the name for her diehard fans throughout the globe who are known for their strong social media presence.

Many people loved it; however, there were predictably those who just didn't get it.

Unless you are a Black American from the South, or more specifically New Orleans, the symbolism throughout the video may go over your head.

The video opens with New Orleans Bounce music artist Big Freedia narrating "what happened at the Nu 'Awlins?" in a distinct Louisiana dialect.

Throughout the video the singer sits on top of a New Orleans police car barely above water in reference to Hurricane Katrina.

She sings, "I like my baby hair, with baby hair and afros. I like my negro nose with Jackson 5 nostrils."

She goes on to sing "my daddy Alabama, momma Louisiana. Mix that negro with that creole you make a Texas 'bama."

Beyonce proudly proclaims she likes her daughter's hair, her husband's nose and the stock of her parents from which she came.

The video showcases the black church, crawfish, marching bands and Second Lines, a New Orleans parade tradition with its roots in West Africa. WI

EWF's Founder Maurice White Dead at 74

ON FEB. 4, the music and the fun stopped as Earth, Wind & Fire founder Maurice White died after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 74.

White, whom The New York Times called a boundless funk voyager and smooth-soul maestro, was one of music's most gifted alchemists of style. Born and raised in Memphis, White moved to Chicago and played as a session drummer for Chess Records.

In 1969, White and brother Verdine co-founded Earth, Wind & Fire with Maurice White serving as the group's primary song writer and record producer, sharing lead singing duties with Philip Bailey.

With such hits as "Reasons," "That's the Way of the World," "September" and Boogie Wonderland," Earth, Wind & Fire won six Grammy awards and earned a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The group immediately helped to bring about an evolution in pop music, which bridged the gap that often separated the musical tastes of Black and white America.

Fellowship, History Merge in WI Heritage Tour, Hundreds Explore Baltimore in Annual Trip The Washington Informer's 6th annual African American Heritage Tour kicked off this year's journey with the theme "Discovering Baltimore: The Charm City of Neighborhoods, Monuments and Rich Heritage."

Hundreds of Informer readers, including a large number of children, along with corporate sponsors, gathered on Feb. 13 at THEARC (Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus) in Southeast, which has hosted all six of the Informer's tours to embark on a black history tour — this time focusing on the rich but often untold history of Baltimore.

"Baltimore is a place whose notoriety rose in the news because of crime, police and lack of economic development. Battle Ensues Over Supreme Court Vacancy PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA vowed that he will "fulfill his constitutional responsibility" by nominating a replacement for late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who died suddenly Feb. 12 during a hunting trip.

But Republican senators and presidential candidates vowed to stall any nominee the White House sends to Capitol Hill — a promise they kept after Obama ultimately nominated Merrick Garland.

DC Streetcar Rides Again After 54 Years of Silence

AFTER HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS and a 10year wait, the D.C. Streetcar finally became available for the first time since 1962.

Hundreds of residents, public officials and Mayor Muriel Bowser gathered on the H Street corridor in Northeast for the opening of the Streetcar, kicking it off with a ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 27.

"This 2.4-mile start to the Streetcar will connect neighborhoods and communities and spur economic development," Bowser said. "Most importantly, the Streetcar offers another option in addition to Metro and the DC Circulator.

"There are 10 schools along this corridor, and those students will have options," she said.

Bowser went on to say that the streetcar program will be expanding west and east to Benning Road and that the planning is underway. WI

Whittington New Maryland Homeland Security Chief GEVONIA WHITTINGTON has made a few firsts as a Black woman during her 26-year tenure as a Prince George's County employee.

As a member of the police department, she became the first commander in the special operations division, the first to obtain the rank of sergeant in the K-9 unit and the second deputy police chief.

The 45-year-old native from Landover was confirmed Feb. 16 as the county's third director of homeland security.

"I'm like, 'What did I do to deserve all these good things?'" she said Feb. 24 while standing inside the county's 911 dispatch center in Bowie. "I've just been blessed beyond what I ever thought I would be."

Whittington, who receives a $160,000 salary, describes her job as helping to manage, direct and coordinate any public safety responses to such incidents as domestic terrorism, inclement weather and natural disasters. THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC) and various international leaders stepped up efforts to get a handle the Zika virus epidemic suspected of causing birth defects among newborns throughout the Americas.

The mosquito-borne virus has been linked to a debilitating disorder known as Guillain-Barre syndrome. In one Columbian town, Turbo, doctors have seen five cases of the syndrome — all of them severe — resulting in three deaths, one person in intensive care and a fifth patient unable to move their legs for weeks.

On Monday, Feb. 22, ABC News reported that Cuba's President Raul Castro announced that the country will dispatch 9,000 soldiers to help keep the Zika virus out of Cuba. He called on officials and citizens to help combat the Aedes species mosquito that carries the virus.

Until the cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome became known in Columbia, the biggest threat of the disease remained not the lack of a cure but its link to newborns born withabnormally small or deformed heads, a condition known as microcephaly.

Brazil's health minister Marcelo Castro said on Feb. 12 that there is no doubt that the virus and microcephaly are connected.

"We are absolutely sure of the causal relationship between microcephaly and Zika," he said, The Associated Press reported. "It has nothing to do with the environment, nothing to do with race, nothing to do with gender."

Although Castro remains adamant about the connection, other experts aren't ready to say definitively what the source of the cases of microcephaly are. loser to achieving everything I have worked so hard for in my career." WI

City Contracts Third Party for EMS Crisis

IN OCTOBER, the city council unanimously approved an act that would allow private ambulances to transport patients with low-priority needs.

In a statement released from American Medical Response of Colorado on Feb. 19, the private fleet of basic life-support ambulances was to commence in the following 30 days, providing service from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week.

This arrangement provided DCFEMS additional bandwidth to treat Advanced Life Support patients.

"Caring for the citizens and visitors of our nation's capital has been an immense source of pride for our clinicians and organization for many years and we are honored to now also do so within the community's 911 system," said Edward Van Horne, president and CEO of AMR. WI

Freddie Gray's Death: A Look One Year Later MILLIONS OF AMERICANS took time to remember the April 19, 2015, death of Freddie Gray, which sparked several days of protests in Baltimore and nationwide.

Gray, 25, was taken into custody by Baltimore police after they found him in possession of a small knife. He subsequently died of a severe spinal cord injury suffered in the back of the police van during transport.

Prosecutors stated that police gave Gray a "rough ride," where his hands and legs were shackled but his seat belt was not fastened so he would be thrown around in the back of the van.

Although police Commissioner Anthony Batts was eventually fired, three of six officers charged in the case were acquitted, while charges were dropped against the three others.

Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby was criticized by the local police union and even the mayor for charging the officers prematurely.

One of the officers, Sgt. Alicia White, spoke last month to WMAR-TV about wanting to return to the streets. White, 30, grew up in the city and has been on paid administrative leave Greater Mt. Music Icon Prince Dies

PRINCE ROGERS NELSON, known to the world as music megastar Prince, died April 21 at 57 after an accidental overdose of painkillers at his Paisley Park studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

Millions posted their condolences on social media, radio stations played the Purple One's music for weeks and celebrations took place nationwide. Locally, hundreds attended an April 23 dance party at the Howard Theatre in Northwest.

Prince hit the music scene in 1979, but became a superstar four years later with the hit album "1999" that went quadruple platinum. In 1984, he starred in his first film, "Purple Rain," with the soundtrack becoming his most successful album to date, selling more than 13 million copies.

Chris Van Hollen, Donna Edwards Vie for Mikulski's U.S. Senate Seat THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the retiring Barbara Mikulski heated up in the home stretch of the race between Maryland Reps. Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen.

Edwards had sought to become the first black woman in the Senate in more than two decades.

Trayvon Martin's Mother Speaks to The Informer THE 2012 DEATH of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin sparked a nationwide conversation about race, gun violence and police brutality. But Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, has chosen to channel her pain in a positive way.

Fulton spoke to The Washington Informer about how she uses the nonprofit Trayvon Martin Foundation to mentor families on education, youth and other social programs through a holistic approach. The foundation's "Circle of Mothers" initiative brings mothers together whose children died to violence.

"We sit down and say to each other, 'I know how you feel,'" she said. "Our focus is women because women grieve differently than men."

Fulton also leads a peace walk in symbolism of her son walking home before being fatally shot by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman.

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton spoke about gun violence at the foundation's May 21 gala in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Fulton's organization may participate in the Women's March on Washington to attend next month's presidential inauguration.

Obama Speaks at HU Commencement PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA gave the keynote address at Howard University's 148th commencement ceremony on May 7.

Obama, who received an honorary law degree from the university presented by civil rights icon Vernon Jordan, told the 2,300-plus graduates that America is a better place today than when he graduated from college.

Obama told the more than 2,300 graduates there were no black leaders of Fortune 500 companies and only a handful of judges when he received a Bachelor's degree from Columbia University in New York City in 1983.

Russell Simmons Addresses Glitch in Rush Credit Card HIP-HOP ICON and music mogul Russell Simmons created a prepaid debit card to cater to underserved communities, but a major computer glitch last year caused thousands of cardholders from accessing their money.

Muhammad Ali, 'The Greatest of All Time,' Dies MUHAMMAD ALI, considered one of the most charismatic and greatest athletes in history, died June 3 at 74.

Millions worldwide expressed their condolences in cards, on social media and at a public viewing hosted in the legendary boxer's hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

Ali recorded 56 career wins, 37 by knockout, and was the first boxer to win the heavyweight title three times.

Outside the ring, he took harsh criticism in the early 1960s when he changed his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali to follow Islam.

In 1967, he refused to be drafted into the Vietnam War. For his refusal, Ali was stripped of his title, banned from boxing for three years, sent to prison for five years and fined $10,000, though he regained the title upon his release and went on to become one of the world's most beloved figures.

Though significantly slowed by Parkinson's disease after his retirement, one of the lasting images of Ali is of him at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, standing on a platform with his left hand profusely shaking while lighting the Olympic torch, nearly four decades after he won the gold medal in boxing at the 1960 games.

DESHAUNA BARBER, a member of the Army Reserves in Fort Meade, Maryland, became the first woman in the military to be crowned Miss USA during the annual pageant in Las Vegas on June 5.

The 26-year-old logistics commander with the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit resides in the District. Barber, born in Columbus, Georgia, lived in several states growing up in a military family.

She received a bachelor's degree in business management from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia.

One of her quotes from the pageant: "It is important that we recognize gender doesn't limit us in the United States."

Last month, she participated in "Operation Homefront," a gala aboard a Carnival cruise ship in New York City to honor 700 military families. Country music superstar Carrie Underwood also performed at the event.WI

DISTRICT VOTERS elected to shake things up on the city council with three incumbents losing in the city's Democratic primary election on June 14, despite support of all three from Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Former Mayor Vincent Gray easily defeated Ward 7 Councilwoman Yvette Alexander, while Robert White topped at-large Councilman Vincent Orange by more than 2,200 votes. The second time was the charm for Trayon White, who beat out Ward 8's LaRuby May after losing to her in a 2015 special election for the seat.

With May's ouster, at-large member Anita Bonds will now

be the only black woman on the 13-member council.

DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE Hillary Clinton spoke to Chicago Defender on June 27 during a campaign stop in Chicago to address the Women's International luncheon during the 45th annual Rainbow Push Coalition convention.

Clinton spoke on a myriad of topics such as the importance of the Black Press, job creation, education, community policing and gun violence, which she called a "civil rights issue."

"We are intimidated by, controlled by and directed by the gun lobby in Washington," she said. "Members of Congress are scared to death, governors and state legislatures are scared to death … because the gun lobby represents a dedicated focused group of voters. They will make anybody who doesn't vote with them pay the price."

Although Clinton won the popular vote in last month's general election by more than two million votes, she only received 232 votes in the Electoral College compared to 306 for Republican candidate Donald Trump that gave him the victory. WI

AS SUMMER KICKED INTO FULL SWING in July, nothing proved more heated than the debate on the referendum for the State of New Columbia.

D.C. council members unanimously passed a resolution approving the submission of a proposed advisory referendum to the Board of Elections that would allow voters to support statehood and ask to petition Congress to enact a statehood Admission Act, including boundaries of the future state of New Columbia and a constitution.

"This is a historic day for statehood for Washington, D.C.," said Mayor Muriel Bowser. "I have faith that District residents will overwhelmingly support this referendum."

In November, voters did just that, as the statehood effort garnered 86 percent support while just 14 percent opposed.

The effort to turn the District into a state will now go to Congress, which must approve it.

"Congressional ethics bar members from organizing grass roots lobbying activities, but this campaign is tailor-made for residents," said D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has long championed statehood.

"The 2016 statehood vote obligates the District to respond with organized action."WI

The Miracle on 7th Street Pop-up Christmas Bar returned bigger and better just in time to celebrate the end of the holiday season in the District.

A day after Thanksgiving, Derek Brown, Angie Fetherston and Drink Company brought back the viral sensation to craft cocktail bar Mockingbird Hill in addition to adjoining bars Eat the Rich and Southern Efficiency in Northwest.

“Last year was so much fun, it's hard to imagine how we could make it more fun, but guess what: we will,” Brown said.

Miracle on 7th Street, includes whimsical winter wonderland décor touches like a dreidel chandelier and a nativity scene starring gilded dinosaurs.

Kwanzaa Celebrates 50 Years Local Events Honors Tradition

The African-American week-long celebration of heritage and culture returns this year for its 50th anniversary.

From Dec. 26 - Jan. 1 millions of Africans throughout the diaspora, particularly the United States will observe Kwanzaa, or “first fruits” in Swahili.

Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University Long Beach, started the holiday as a way to bring AfricanAmericans together as a community according to history.com.

Karenga combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations, such as those of the Ashanti and those of the Zulu, to form the basis of Kwanzaa.

The celebration includes songs and dances, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading and a large traditional meal.

On each of the seven nights, the family gathers and a child lights one of the candles on the Kinara [candleholder] then together they discuss the principles.

The Nguzo Saba [seven principles in Swahili] are values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing community among African-Americans.

They are Unity/Umoja, to strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race; Self-determination/Kujichagulia, to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves; Collective work and responsibility/Ujima, to build and maintain our community together and make our brother’s and sister’s problems our problems and to solve them together; Cooperative economics/Ujamaa, to build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together; Purpose/Nia, to make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness; Creativity/Kuumba, to do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it; Faith/Imani, to believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

With the passing of beloved celebrities Prince, Muhammad Ali and David Bowie, the arrival of the Zika virus, unceasing terror attacks, Brexit, the Syrian war and refugee crisis, and a shocking 2-year-long election, 2016 will be one of the worst years on record--at least in our lifetime.

However, as deeply as recent events influenced our lives, we, as U.S. citizens, have the potential and privilege to constructively reciprocate that impact.

Whether you were inspired by the resilience of #NoDAPL and Black Lives Matter protesters or by Simone Biles’ explosive gymnastic performance at the Summer Olympics, use the worst (or best) moments of 2016 to spur a terrific 2017.

Drafting feasible New Year's resolutions usually takes time, honest reflection, and practical goal-setting. But I’ve come up with a few sample New Year’s resolutions, keeping our collective experiences in mind, to jumpstart this process for you.

Activate Your Citizenship:

Many, if not most people were upset with the results of the election this year, but we cannot remain passive, wounded observers.

Our politics, however reminiscent of reality TV, is not a spectator sport. Dedicate one call per month to your congressman. Many of us are transient transplants hailing from less decisively leaning states across the country. In

Give your time or money to a local advocacy group to support the issues you care about the most for 2017. Strengthen your resolve to DO something about how you feel. Read more. Talk more. Act!

DIY Health:

Did you feel as incompetent as I did watching Katie Ledecky blow her Olympic competitors away in the 1200M Freestyle in Brazil? Fitspo [fitness inspiration]. If you have an iPhone, check out your step count on the Health app [they’ve been tracking you ever since the update]. What’s your average? Try to top it, then set a date to double it.

And if can push through 10 to 12 minutes, I suggest trying YouTube workout series, “Pop Pilates” or any other yoga or HIIT videos. “Couchto5K” is another excellent app for beginner runners, or for those of us getting back on the horse. No equipment needed.

Mindful Eating:

While we’re on the exercise tip, reflect on how you eat. Do you eat when you’re hungry? Do you eat when you’re full? Get in tune with your body next year by eating mindfully. Flip the script on dieting by paying attention to your physical hunger signals instead of mental ones. It’s a low-stress, important first step if you’ve been meaning to change your

eating habits. This ultimately leads to better digestion, less bloating, and just feeling more balanced. Or if you find yourself with an unwanted sweet tooth after the holidays, challenge yourself to cut out processed sugar products. Replace them with low-glycemic index foods like sweet potatoes or plantains, which will raise your sugar levels slowly to prevent that notorious crash. Pair this with upped water intake and say hello to clearer skin and dependable energy levels throughout the day.

Go Green:

This year the CO2 [Carbon dioxide] surpassed 400 parts per millions in our atmosphere--the highest level ever experienced by humans in our existence. As we face unprecedented weather patterns, mass extinctions, and plastic-polluted water, many are considering new ways to reduce their consumption and carbon output. Meatless Mondays, a weekly pledge to one day a week substitute meat [especially red meat] for, literally anything else. This makes a financial impact on the meat industry, which creates a huge carbon footprint [~8% of all carbon emissions]. Here are a few tips to contribute to a better planet: - Carry a water bottle instead of relying on single-use containers.

- Opt for the metro more often - Use dish towels over paper towels - Use low-energy light bulbs - Ditch plastic bags

THE MONTH OF JULY brought more cries of "no justice, no peace" in the African-American community as prosecutors dropped all charges against three Baltimore police officers accused in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray, ending one of the highest-profile criminal cases in the city's history with zero convictions.

Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby acknowledged the long odds of securing convictions in the remaining cases following the acquittals of three other officers on similar though more serious charges.

In a July 27 hearing meant to start the trial of Officer Garrett Miller, prosecutors dropped their cases against him, Officer William Porter and Sgt. Alicia White. Circuit Judge Barry G. Williams, who had acquitted the other officers, was expected to preside over the remaining trials as well.

After the most recent acquittal and "a great deal of thought and prayer," Mosby resolved to drop the remaining charges.

Gray's death — and several other deadly police confrontations with African-Americans — continues to be one of top news stories over the past few years.. WI

Michelle Obama Takes the 'High Road' "WHEN THEY GO LOW, WE GO HIGH." With those words — and so many others that were just as profound — first lady Michelle Obama proved to be the sharpest and best weapon in Hillary Clinton's bid for the White House.

In her captivating speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Obama tore into Donald Trump, but did it in the way one would to set a bully straight.

Noting the mudslinging from the Trump campaign, the classy first lady urged Democrats to stay above the fray, with the "we go high" line becoming a Clinton campaign mantra.

"It was spectacular," Democratic consultant and strategist Bob Shrum said of Obama's speech. "It had the gift of all really great speeches: authenticity. It wasn't manufactured or precooked. It had a wonderful narrative line."

While Obama told Oprah Winfrey this month that she has no future political aspirations, her work as first lady and on the campaign trail certainly opened even more eyes to what a unique and talented leader Michelle Obama has been. WI

Private Prisons End in August DOJ Move IT HAD BEEN the source of much consternation, particularly in the African-American community.

But on Aug. 18, President Barack Obama's Department of Justice announced it would stop using private prisons.

Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates said private prisons "simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs, and resources; they do not save substantially on costs; and as noted in a recent report by the Department's Office of Inspector General, they do not maintain the same level of safety and security."

Effective immediately, the Justice Department said it would seek to reduce and "ultimately end" the use of privately operated prisons and contracts with private prison operators were not to be renewed or they would be scaled back dramatically.

Though just a small portion of America's 2.2 million incarcerated adult prisoners, about 195,000 inmates in federal prisons would be affected.

Advocates for prison reform believe this could be the beginning of the end for private prisons. WI

Head Start Program Ends in PG County IN A MONTH where education was front and center as schools opened for the new semester, there was also news in August that for many was tough to swallow.

On Aug. 26, the Prince George's County Board of Education voted against appealing a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services decision to strip the county of a federal grant for its Head Start program after a scandal involving two cases of mistreatment of some students in the preschool program.

Board chair Segun Eubanks said the move will allow the school system to work with the federal government to find an interim operator, other than the school system, to keep the Head Start program running through the current school year.

"We will continue to investigate the events that occurred and hold accountable the systems and or individuals who failed to protect our children," Eubanks said.

By late September, school officials had made a deal to retain control of the program and announced it would operate with $5.5 million in local funds under the name "Early Start." WI

Grades of Minority Students Continue to Rise in D.C. AS KAYA HENDERSON prepared her exit as chancellor of D.C. Public Schools, results publicized in August from the latest standardized assessment tests showed that while there's still much work to be done, black and Latino students have made gains.

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, also known as PARCC, is an exam that intends to show whether or not students are "ready for college and careers."

By their measure, less than 30 percent of students in D.C. public schools are "ready for college and careers," but more are ready this year than last.

Henderson said the results show a slight improvement from 2015.

"I'm very pleased with the progress that we've made [but] I'm not satisfied with our current performance," Henderson said, noting that roughly 26 percent of D.C. public school students met or exceeded expectations in English and language arts.

In math, 24 percent met or exceeded expectations.

"We also have a lot of work left to do," Henderson said. "After decades of languishing, we're not going to fix DCPS in just a few years." WI

The highly-anticipated opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture on the national mall brought out celebrities, dignitaries and so many more.

President Barack Obama delivered the keynote address and officially dedicated the museum before an overflow audience at the site and millions who watched on television.

The president noted that centuries of struggles and strife, decades of planning and pain, and years of hoping for a place that African-American history can call home had finally come to fruition.

"It helps us better understand the lives, yes, of a president, but also the slave," Obama said.

"The industrialist, but also the worker. The teacher or the cook, alongside the story of the statesman. By understanding this story, it binds us together and reaffirms we are all Americans."

Racial Bias of Jurors Comes to Forefront

THE SUPREME COURT on Sept. 29 announced it would hear a case to determine if racially charged comments during jury deliberations are grounds for breaking juror confidentiality.

In a 2010 sexual assault trial in Colorado, a juror identified as H.C. during deliberations said of the defendant, Miguel Angel Peña Rodriguez, “I think he did it because he’s Mexican, and Mexican men take whatever they want."

Peña Rodriguez was accused of harassing and trying to grope teenage girls in a bathroom at a racetrack in 2007. The jury convicted Peña Rodriguez of three misdemeanors but deadlocked over a felony charge.

He was sentenced to only two years' probation.

After the trial, questions arose about whether H.C.'s remarks affected the verdict and prevented the jury from reaching a conclusion on the felony charge, which would have resulted in a harsher punishment had he been found guilty.

In October, the court did hear the case and, as of December, were still weighing a decision. WI

White Named to Council after Orange Quits ON SEPT. 15, Robert White was named by the D.C. Democratic State Committee as the temporary replacement for D.C. Council member Vincent Orange, who resigned from his seat in August to take a job as president of the city's Chamber of Commerce.

White, who had defeated Orange in the Democratic primary for the at-large Council seat in June, officially won the seat in the November general election with 53 percent of the vote.

In the community, White is respected as an advocate and served as president of the Brightwood Park Citizens Association, which he founded more than three years ago to unite and energize his neighborhood.

He also serves on the board of WINNERS Lacrosse, a nonprofit that uses lacrosse to build leadership in and provide mentorship to youth in the D.C. area. WI

Black Congregation Marks Record 200th Anniversary MT. ZION UNITED METHODIST CHURCH [UMC], founded in 1816, celebrated its 200th anniversary this October – and stands as the oldest African-American congregation in the District.

It traces its beginning back to the early 19th century when Blacks – some free and others still slaves – severed ties with Montgomery Street UMC because church officials only allowed them to worship from the balcony.

The church’s current pastor and the first Black female to lead the congregation, the Rev. Johnsie W. Cogman, danced down the aisle as the landmark celebration began saying, “When God has blessed you for 200 years, there should be some real praise in the house.”

The historic celebration titled “Still Standing, Still Sowing, Still Serving,” included a weekend of activities two years in the making.

One descendant of Mt. Zion’s early members, Sharon Simpson Goings, said she, like the other 160-plus current members, has no plans to move to another location – despite challenges of limited parking and the onslaught of gentrification that has all but eliminated the many Black churches, homes and businesses that were all once fixtures in the neighborhood.

“My grandmother and my great-grandmother are buried in the old slave cemetery,” she said proudly.

Black Men Share Tales of Fear Involving Police OVER 700 BLACK MEN AND YOUTH gathered at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Landover, Maryland where they shared personal stories about encounters with law enforcement officials that left many of them angry if not afraid for their lives.

The men who attended the town hall meeting represented many walks of life: a minister, the Rev. John K. Jenkins, pastor of First Baptist Church; a former NBA star, Etan Thomas; and several federal law enforcement officials including a commander of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

For one of the church’s ministerial staff members, participating in the discussion was important so that he and others could share, listen and learn.

“This is personal. I have three sons, 24, 20 and 17 and I’m a Black man,” said the Rev. Johnny Parker who helped develop the concept and outline for the forum. “Ten years ago my cousin, Sean Bell, was killed by officers working for the NYPD. I wanted to give brothers a chance to talk it out so they won’t act out,” he said.

One youth said there’s something wrong with the way things are today.

Trump Defeats Clinton in Stunning Upset NEW YORK BILLIONAIRE and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump delivered on his promise, stunning many Americans and countries around the world with his upset victory over Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee. And while Trump has vowed to get rid of Obamacare, build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and bring jobs back to the U.S. from overseas, it remains to be seen if he can make good on his campaign promises, particularly given his penchant for making off-the cuff remarks and sometimes offensive statements related to the gender, ethnic origin or race of those in his radar. Some Americans wonder if he will be able to make the transition from a brash businessman to a level-headed commander-in-chief.

As he continues to put together his leadership team which has included more “insiders” than his earlier vow to “drain the swamp” suggested, Trump will also need to consider potential nominees for an uncommonly high number of vacancies in federal and district courts as well as the open Supreme Court seat. With an estimated 103 judicial vacancies, almost double the 54 openings Obama received after securing the keys to the White House from George W. Bush, Trump will without question reshape the judiciary.

Obama was unable to get many of his nominees confirmed after Republicans took control of the Senate in 2015, leading many political experts and pundits to criticize the unprecedented level of obstruction employed in blocking the president’s court selections.

JUST 11 DAYS BEFORE the November general election, FBI Director James Comey informed Republican and Democratic members of Congress that the Bureau had once again began to review e-mails related to Hillary Clinton’s personal server after learning of more information that might be relevant to their previously-closed case.

A barrage of criticism followed from Congress members and both presidential campaigns calling for the release of additional information on the e-mails.

D.C. Councilman-elect Vincent Gray described the situation as one with which he could easily identify, referring to accusations of campaign finance shenanigans that derailed his mayoral re-election efforts in 2014. Just weeks before the 2014 primary election when Gray held a comfortable lead over his top challenger Muriel Bowser, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Ronald Machen identified Gray as the specific target of a corruption allegation – all but promising to soon indict the mayor.

Gray lost the election to Bowser; Machen never returned an indictment.

And while a host of public and professional figures decried the FBI’s timing and its potential impact on Clinton’s campaign, which Gray says they were right to do, he said many of the same people sat silently when he was “dealt a similar injustice during my re-election campaign.”

“Could it be that a Black man is presumed guilty and a white woman is presumed innocent?” asked Chuck Thies, Gray’s spokesperson and campaign manager. WI

NOVEMBER Maryland Sends Chris Van Hollen and Anthony Brown to Senate, House

CHRIS VAN HOLLEN AND ANTHONY BROWN easily won their respective bids for the Senate and the House against their opponents in the Democrat-rich state of Maryland. And with the victory of Jamie Raskin, who won the 8th Congressional District race, it will be the first all-male Maryland delegation in more than 40 years.

Van Hollen, 57, who received just over 60 percent of the votes, has represented the 8th Congressional District, which includes portions of Montgomery, Frederic and Carroll counties, since 2003. He will succeed retiring Senator Barbara Mikulski who served for 30 years.

Brown, with nearly 74 percent of the vote in the 4th Congressional District, replaces Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Maryland) who lost in the April primary to Van Hollen.

A majority of voters supported the Democratic slate of Van Hollen, Brown and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton but were divided on several referendum questions on the ballot that would add two at-large members to the Prince George’s County council and five requests that would allow officials to borrow nearly $500 million to renovate, repair and construct new buildings as part of a 2017-2022 capital improvement program. Voters approved the cluster of referendums and the council composition question. WI

REPRESENTATIVE CEDRIC RICHMOND (D – LA, 2nd District) was chosen to lead the Congressional Black Caucus [CBC] as chairman for the 115th Congress, replacing his colleague and former chairman Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D – NC, 1st District).

The new CBC executive board officially take their offices on January 3. Others chosen in the recent elections include: Andre Carson (IN – 07), 1st vice chair; Karen Bass (CA – 37), 2nd vice chair; Brenda Lawrence (MI – 14), secretary; and Gwen Moore (WI – 04), whip.

Butterfield expressed confidence in the “strong leadership” that Richmond will provide.

Richmond said in his role as the new CBC chairman, the Caucus will continue to do what it’s done since its inception in 1971.

“We will carry the mantle and arms for the African-American community, for people of color, in terms of fighting for equality and against discrimination wherever it’s found,” he said.

When asked how he thinks the victory of Donald Trump will impact the work of the CBC, Richmond said the following: “It’s never been easy for the CBC – and that’s whether the president has been Black, white, Democrat or Republican . . . Now more than ever we must be unified, determined and unwilling and unable to be swayed.”

THE HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED MGM National Harbor, the newest jewel in Prince George’s County, finally opened its doors to the public with thousands already flocking to the $1.4 billion casino resort since its official opening late Thursday night (Dec. 8).

And while the facility will bring thousands of jobs and revenue to the county, concerns over traffic gridlocks still remain. Police and county officials said that despite an estimated 30,000 visitors converging on the new resort during the first weekend of business, traffic flowed smoothly. The state and county expect the resort to generate millions of dollars in taxes and about 4,000 permanent jobs.

However, the debut of the casino was marred by an opening night fight that broke out outside of the casino and was captured on video. Two men punching and kicking another man quickly made the rounds on social media, much to the chagrin of both MGM and county officials.

The resort features a 3,000-seat theater that will host concerts, boxing matches among its events, 125,000 square feet of casino space of gaming tables and slot machines, restaurants with menus prepared by renowned chefs, a 308-room hotel and a shoe boutique opened by actress Sarah Jessica Parker.

“The thing that is greatest about [MGM National Harbor] is it’s a watershed mark for us in the county,” said Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III. WI

BLACK CRITICS ASSOCIATION'S TOP TEN 2016 FILMS GREAT YEAR AT THE MOVIES FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS

By Stacy M. Brown WI Senior Writer The coming-of-age drama "Moonlight" earned the top movie award from the African-American Film Critics Association.

The film, which also won awards for best director and best supporting actor, helps to cap a great year on the silver screen for African Americans.

In a release, the association praised 2016 as the best year for the black community in cinema with its diversity in both casting and storylines.

"The studios and major film distributors really gave it to us this year," said Gil Robertson, AAFCA co-founder and president. "By any measurement, it's been an exceptional year for blacks in film. From comedies to high-quality dramas and documentaries, 2016 will forever represent a bonanza year for black cinema and all cinema, really."

Films such as "Fences," "Hidden Figures" and "Moonlight" paved the way, along with box office hits such as "Ride Along 2" and "Central Intelligence," Variety reported.

"The amount of quality feature films, documentaries and TV shows released in 2016 about the black experience easily make it the best year ever," said AAFCA co-founder Shawn Edwards. "It has truly been an unapologetically black year in the industry as filmmakers brought to life some of the cultures most fascinating stories and subjects with bold storytelling perspective."

THE BEST BOOKS OF 2016

Yep, if you were me, the answer would be, "Ohhh, yeah!" Shelves of them, in fact, over the past 52 weeks, and here are some of the better choices I read in 2016, in no particular order:

FICTION:

I'm not sure why, but I couldn't stop touching "I Will Send Rain" by Rae Meadows when I first got it. The cover pulled at me, but the story? Oh, my, it's the tale of a family of four during the Dust Bowl years. The mother, Annie Bell, is trying desperately to hold her family together while her daughter dreams a dangerous dream, her son is mute, and her husband slowly goes mad. There's a surprise in here, a fifth main character, and that's the dust. Do. Not. Miss. This. Book.

Not normally a big fan of fictionalized biographies, "Mrs. Houdini" by Victoria Kelly nonetheless captivated me with its magic. It's a tale of love and illusion, believing, trust, and it includes a gauzy ending that might seem implausible, but who knows? Hint: if you can bear it, save your gift card. This book comes out in paperback in March.

Generally speaking, I'll read anything by Emma Donoghue. She has a way of turning a tiny, true event into a novel that sticks in your head, and "The Wonder" is no exception. It's the story of a very confident, almost haughty nurse who served with Florence Nightingale and seems to think that stint confers some sort of specialness. When she's hired to watch a child who claims not to eat or drink, the nurse thinks the girl is a scammer — but, of course, there's so much more to the story and an ending that's so perfect, it's stunning. Write this title down. It's another book you can't miss.

A vision of the apocalypse is at root in "The Fireman" by Joe Hill. It's a novel about a virus that's infected the world, and if you catch it, you burn. Poof, up in flames, and it's pitting neighbor against neighbor and husband against wife. There's a surprising romance in this book, thrills, a chase, humor, and horror, and here's a hint: there are shades of Hill's father in here. Guess who?

For my fifth pick, I debated: "Britt-Marie Was Here" or "And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer," both by Fredrik Backman? I finally decided on the latter, the story of life and loss, forgetting and trying hard not to. But here's the thing to know: the first go-around won't make much sense. Turn around and read it again — it's really short, so no problem — and bring tissues that time. It's truly a lovely book.

Hint: "Britt-Marie" is a close — very close — second pick.

NONFICTION

As I was looking over the list of things I read, I was surprised to remember how much I enjoyed "Neither Snow nor Rain" by Devin Leonard. Overall, this book is about the U.S. Postal Service and its history. The thing that makes this book so much fun, though, is that Leonard also includes so many side stories that it becomes more of a general history that's light and fun. Fans of Bill Bryson, take note and find this book.

Another something that's informative and a little on the light side is "Playing Dead" by Elizabeth Greenwood. I mean, how many times a week does the average person wish they could chuck it all and disappear somewhere? Greenwood looks into that: how it's done, what it's like, and the impacts it has on loved ones.

You might change your mind. Or you might want to disappear even more. Either way, this is a can't-miss.

As a baby boomer, "They Left Us Everything" by Plum Johnson particularly resonated with me, which is why it really has to be on this list. Johnson's parents were both elderly and had lived in their oversized house for decades. When they died relatively close in time, Johnson and her brothers were tasked with cleaning up, but not just the house. They also had memories to examine and scrub. This is a book for daughters, particularly, but also for anyone who's facing the downsizing of a home or end-of-life caretaking.

In a political year, you might guess that an abundance of political books might be published — and you'd be right. My pick for the best in that category is "Nixon's Gamble" by Ray Locker, who takes a brief look at Nixon's early career before digging into the moves that the President made, starting on the day of his inauguration. Even if you think you know what happened nearly half a century ago… you don't. For history lovers of any age or place, this is an eye-opener.

I don't think I would have liked "Another Day in the Death of America" by Gary Younge quite as

much if it had been laser-focused. Nope, Younge took one random day in recent years, and he writes about the 10 children who died of gunshot wounds in the U.S. on that day. It's that randomness that's so shocking, especially when you consider the statistic he cites: an average of seven children die by gun every day in America — and the circumstances Younge found make this book even more impactful.

CHILDREN'S/YOUNG ADULT BOOKS

Putting "The Bill the Cat Story" by Berkley Breathed on the kids Best Of list might be cheating a little bit because this book is only partly something for kids. True, the kiddoes will love the illustrations and older children might laugh at the storyline, but this book is every bit for adults as it is for the younger set. Grown-ups will love the message inside this book; fans of Breathed's "Bloom County" will appreciate knowing about Binkley's first days with Bill, and the insider peek at Opus' home. I don't say this lightly: it's a book for the whole family.

I'm not sure if I was ready for its light breeziness, but "Being Jazz" by Jazz Jennings was the right book at the right time when I read it last summer. You might have seen Jennings on the news; as a transgender teen, she's become somewhat of a spokesperson for trans rights and acceptance. Her book is gossipy, bubbly, and truthful — she proactively answers questions that teens want to know, without embarrassment. Hint: this is a great book for adults, too.

Another book that caught me by surprise (because I loved it so much) was "Mama Loved to Worry" by Maryann Weidt, illustrated by Rachael Balsaitis. In the same vein as the Pecos Bill, Slue-Foot Sue, and Paul Bunyan stories you loved as a kid, this is a book set on a farm, with a Mama whose tasks grow larger in both action and in fable. The pictures are as much fun as the story, and you'll love it just as much as your child does — especially when it's read aloud.

There's a lot of cleverness inside "The Night Parade" by Kathryn Tanquary — enough to keep a lover of darkness up all night. It's the story of a Japanese-American girl who tries to fit in with the "in" crowd by disrespecting her ancestors, and yes, her actions have scary repercussions. Older middle schoolers not prone to nightmares will love this, as will younger young adults who are just stepping into this genre. Hint: save your gift cards. This book comes out in paperback in January.

And finally, "This is Where It Ends" by Marieke Nijkamp is a chillingly unexpected tale of a school shooting and heroism, with realism and timeliness that will shock you. That's not counting the story itself, told in minute-by-minute increments that will make you forget you're not reading a real account of a tragedy. Again, this isn't just a YA book. It's something adults should also want to read.

And now the paperwork: look for these books at your local library or bookstore. If you can't find them, ask your favorite bookseller or librarian, who is surely wearing a superhero cape beneath his or her clothing.

Muhammad Ali: Simply the Greatest

Wo r l d - re n ow n e d boxing champion Muhammad Ali died June 3 in Arizona at the age of 74 after a longtime battle with Parkinson's disease.

The iconic boxer had been fighting respiratory issues that were complicated by the Parkinson's that he was diagnosed with in the 1980s.

The champ's funeral bought out a who's who of dignitaries and celebrities including former President Bill Clinton, comedian Billy Crystal, actor Will Smith and former boxing champion Mike Tyson.

Countless others joined the procession or watched on television.

"Like everyone else on the planet, Michelle and I mourn his passing," President Barack Obama said in a video statement played at the funeral. "But we're grateful to God for how fortunate we are to have known him, if just for a while; for how fortunate we all are that 'The Greatest' chose to grace our time."

Perhaps the most recognized person in the world, Ali will always be remembered for his ring conquests over the likes of Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman. An Olympic gold medalist, Ali famously thundered, "I am the greatest," and stated he would "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."

He was the first boxer to win the heavyweight title three times.

Afeni Shakur Davis Dies at 69

She was the quintessential success story.

After homelessness and drugs nearly derailed her, Afeni Shakur Davis would go on to open a $4 million arts center to help inner-city children.

And of course, she was the mother of one of the most gifted hip-hop artists ever, Tupac Shakur.

Davis died May 2 at the age of 69.

In a 2005 interview, ahead of the

opening of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain, Georgia, Davis recalled how she was in the throes of drug addiction and how her son helped her get back on track.

Her drug use made her so oblivious to what was happening in her life that when someone told her in 1990 that her son — then on the precipice of becoming the biggest name in hip-hop — was going to be on "The Arsenio Hall Show," she thought the person was lying, CNN reported.

She said she got clean in 1991, and when her son was gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996, she resisted the urges to delve back into her old bad habits, instead founding Amaru Entertainment to keep her son's music alive.

Actor Ron Glass, 71

Veteran television and film actor Ron Glass died on Nov. 21 of respiratory failure at age 71.

Any avid TV watcher of the past 35 years or so is likely familiar with Glass's face. He is perhaps best known for his Emmy-nominated turn as NYPD Det. Ron Harris on the classic cop sitcom "Barney Miller," which aired from 1975 to 1982 on ABC. "Ron was a private, gentle and caring man," said Jeffrey Leavitt, Glass's agent.

"He was an absolute delight to watch on screen. Words cannot adequately express my sorrow."

Glass is the second cast member from that critically acclaimed show to die in 2016. The irascible and iconic Abe Vigoda, who played Det. Phil Fish for part of the sitcom's run, died in January at age 94.

For a younger generation of TV viewers, Glass was a standout as the deeply religious preacher Derrial Brook on the 2002 cult sci-fi show "Firefly," which eventually spun off the 2005 feature film "Serenity," co-starring Glass.

Marion Christopher Barry: 1980-2016

Marion Christopher Barry, the son of the late former D.C. mayor, died after a drug overdose on Aug. 14.

Barry, 36, the son of Marion and Effi Barry, had struggled with drug use. According to a police report, the person who reported Christopher Barry's death said Barry went outside about 12:10 a.m. to smoke PCP and K2, a synthetic drug. When he returned, Barry was "acting crazy/different and then he suddenly dropped."

Barry was found unconscious and unresponsive. He was taken to George Washington University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a couple hours later.

"Christopher's sudden death has been devastating news to me," Cora Masters Barry, widow of the former mayor, said in an issued statement. "My heart is broken. I am in shock. The news of his death is beyond comprehension."

He ran unsuccessfully for the Ward 8 Council seat in 2015 after the seat was vacated by the death of his father.

Marion Barry was mayor of Washington, D.C., from 1979 to 1991 and 1995 to 1999. He also served on the Council of the District of Columbia for three terms, one as an at-large member and two serving Ward 8.

Denise Matthews AKA Vanity

Singer, sex symbol and Prince protégé turned evangelist Denise Matthews, better known as Vanity, died Feb. 15. She was 57.

Matthews met Prince at the American Music Awards in 1980, and the two soon became romantically involved, The New York Times reported.

He also invited her to be a part of Vanity 6, the funky, erotically charged girl group that had a hit in 1982 with "Nasty Girl" and toured with Prince. She appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone

with Prince, in a portrait shot by Richard Avedon, with her hands creeping down the front of his pants.

Matthews was supposed to play the lead female role in "Purple Rain," Prince's loosely autobiographical 1984 film, but abandoned the project before filming began.

She went on to release two albums as a solo artist on Motown Records, "Wild Animal" and "Skin on Skin."

Later, Matthews admitted the fast life that included drugs and promiscuous behavior with both men and women took its toll, nearly killing her before she left the name Vanity to become an evangelist.

Photojournalist Mickey Thompson

Washington Informer Editor D. Kevin McNeir, writing about Mickey Thompson after her death in November, probably summed up the life and career of the renowned photojournalist best: she focused on the positive.

Members of social organizations throughout the greater Washington area, Baltimore and beyond expressed sadness after learning that Melvalee "Mickey" Mitchell Thompson Vincent, who contributed her "Social Sightings" column each week to The Washington Informer, had died at 66.

Known professionally as Mickey Thompson, the award-winning photographer who began her career in 2001 captured a plethora of social activities in which blacks were the primary participants through the lens of her camera.

Born April 18, 1950, in Norfolk, Virginia, she later moved to D.C. with her family, graduating from Spingarn High School in 1968. In 1969 she joined the U.S. Marine Corps where she would earn the distinction as the first African-American Miss Armed Forces while moving up the ranks to the position of staff sergeant.

Upon her honorable discharge, she returned to the District, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Communications from the University of the District of Columbia.

Actor Bill Nunn, 62

Bill Nunn, the actor best known for his roles as Radio Raheem in "Do the Right Thing" and the Duh Duh Duh Man in "New Jack City," died on Sept. 24.

He was 62.

Spike Lee, Nunn's friend from Morehouse College who cast the actor in 1988's "School Daze," Nunn's first role, first announced that Nunn had died, Rolling Stone reported.

"My dear friend, my dear Morehouse brother – Da great actor Bill Nunn as most of you know him as Radio Raheem passed away this morning in his hometown Of Pittsburgh," Lee said.

"Long Live Bill Nunn. Radio Raheem is now resting in power. Radio Raheem will always be fighting da powers dat be. May God Watch over Bill Nunn."

It was at Morehouse that Nunn discovered his passion for acting after considering a career in political science and majoring in English. His father, William Nunn, was a journalist and NFL scout for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A year after "School Daze," Lee cast Nunn in the actor's most memorable role as the boombox-toting, Public Enemy-blasting Radio Raheem in 1989's "Do the Right Thing." The actor also appeared in Lee's "Mo' Better Blues" and "He Got Game."

Legendary Journalist Gwen Ifill Dies at 61

She blazed a trail like no other, earning dozens of accolades and awards for her deft work as moderator and managing editor of "Washington Week" and co-anchor and managing editor of PBS "NewsHour."

The loss of Gwen Ifill, the legendary and pioneering African-American journalist on Nov. 14 at the age of 61, saddened the media world.

"Working first for newspapers and later on television, Gwen brought a still, all-too-rare sight into the homes of all Americans: a black woman delivering the news and sharp insight on our nation's political process," said the Rev. William H. Lamar IV, pastor of Metropolitan A.M.E. Church in D.C. Born on Sept. 29, 1955, in the Queens borough of New York City to the former Eleanor Husband and Oliver Urcille Ifill Sr., an A.M.E. minister, Ifill was the fifth of six children and she was raised, as her father was peri-

odically reassigned, in Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, Buffalo, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, in church parsonages and stints in federally subsidized housing.

Ifill joined PBS in 1999, reporting on politics for "NewsHour" and moderating "Washington Week."

Respected throughout the industry, Ifill co-moderated one of the presidential debates between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders earlier this year, and moderated the 2004 vice presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards, and the 2008 debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin.

Music Legend Maurice White, 74

Earth, Wind & Fire co-founder and vocalist Maurice White died in his sleep on Feb. 4. He was 74.

The singer had been battling Parkinson's disease since 1992.

Because of the disease, he had not toured with the pioneering soul and R&B group since 1994, Rolling Stone reported. He nevertheless remained active on the business side of the group.

"My brother, hero and best friend Maurice White passed away peacefully last night in his sleep," White's brother and bandmate Verdine said. "The light is he, shining on you and me."

White, who formed the group with Verdine in 1969, helped innovate a lush, eclectic style with Earth, Wind & Fire that drew inspiration from funk, jazz, R&B and Latin music — as well as Sly Stone and James Brown — for a unique sound that set the tone for soul music in the 1970s.

Maurice and Verdine gave an exclusive interview — perhaps Maurice's last — to The Washington Informer in 2013 prior to the iconic band's performance at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.

Frances Cress Welsing, 80

For those unfamiliar with the name Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, she was one the country's most influential and controversial theoreticians about race and racism.

Her influence did not stem from citations in academic journals, although she gained major recognition after publishing her groundbreaking 1970 essay, "Cress Theory of Color Confrontation (White Supremacy)," which began as a paper presented before members of the American Psychological Association.

Her analysis of the impact of white supremacy was trenchant, hard-hitting and consistent, Ebony magazine reported.

Welsing died on Jan. 2 at the age of 80.

Born in Chicago to a physician and an educator, Welsing was trained in the liberal arts

at Antioch College and in medicine at Howard University College of Medicine, where she would eventually serve as faculty. A longstanding private practitioner and pioneer in the fields of child psychiatry and mental health, her longest institutional affiliation was as the Clinical Director and Staff Physician with the D.C. Department of Human Services, where she charted policy and strategies to help emotionally disturbed children at the Hillcrest Children's Center and the Paul Robeson School for Growth and Development.

Welsing's work on improving the mental health of African-Americans led to a career in the field of race and cultural analysis.

David Bowie Dies at 69

David Bowie, one of the most original and singular voices in rock 'n' roll for nearly five decades, died Jan. 10 after a bout with cancer.

The artist's Facebook page first announced the news before a spokesman confirmed his death to Rolling Stone magazine.

"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer," the statement read. "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."

Bowie, whose flair for theatricality won him a legion of fans, championed mystery, rebellion and curiosity in his music.

Ever unpredictable, the mercurial artist and fashion icon wore many guises throughout his life. Beginning as a dissident folk-rock spaceman, he would become an androgynous, orange-haired, glam-rock alien (Ziggy Stardust), a welldressed, blue-eyed funk maestro (the Thin White Duke), a drug-loving art rocker (the Berlin albums), a new-wave hitmaker, a hard rocker, a techno enthusiast and a jazz impressionist.

Astronaut John Glenn, Dies at 95

Astronaut and former U.S. Sen. John Glenn, considered a national hero after becoming the first American to orbit the Earth, died Dec. 8 at 95.

Glenn had recently been hospitalized at the university at the James Cancer Center, though Ohio State officials said at the time that admission there did not necessarily mean he had cancer. He had heart-valve replacement surgery in 2014 and a stroke around that time.

In just five hours on Feb. 20, 1962, Glenn joined a select roster of Americans whose feats have seized the country's imag-

ination and come to embody a moment in its history, figures like Lewis and Clark, the Wright brothers and Charles Lindbergh.

Then 40 years old, Glenn, a Marine Corps test pilot and one of the seven original American astronauts, climbed into Friendship 7, the tiny Mercury capsule atop an Atlas rocket rising from the concrete flats of Cape Canaveral.

On the 11th scheduled time, all was "go," and the rocket lifted off.

"Godspeed, John Glenn," his fellow astronaut Scott Carpenter said through a microphone at mission control.

The flight stopped the nation in its tracks. People watched on black-andwhite television, listened on the radio and prayed.

At the end of the first orbit, an automatic control mechanism failed, and Glenn took over manual control.

Prince's Reign Comes to Shocking, Sad Conclusion

In the world of music, he had no peers.

Prince Rogers Nelson, one of the rarest of talents and truest of geniuses, died at the age of 57 at his Paisley Park recording studio, concert hall and estate on April 21.

From his 1978 debut and throughout his illustrious career, Prince ruled.

He composed, produced and arranged every song, every album. After his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on a brisk March night in New York, Prince celebrated with a signature performances — one of many for the ages.

It began at 2 a.m. and the hits filled the small Club Black: "Raspberry Beret," "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man," "Pop Life," Let’s Go Crazy," "1999," Little Red Corvette," "Purple Rain." He lit up the stage like no other. Prince then sat behind the piano, playing tunes like "I Feel For You," "Adore" and "Sometimes it Snows in April."

He hit the drums for "Housequake," and "Love Bizarre." And, the guitar was ablaze with "Sign o' The Times," "Musicology" and "When Doves Cry." The reality is that the world lost someone who really was Elvis, James Brown, Michael Jackson and David Bowie all rolled into one. The world lost Prince on April 21, 2016, the day the music really did die.

A Salute to America’s First Black President BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA first gained national attention when he gave a powerful keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. He would parlay that appearance and his inspiring message from his post as an Illinois Congressman to the White House four years later, becoming America’s first Black president at the age of 47.

Many Americans, especially those in the Black community, celebrated his election weeks after the final votes were tallied. We had finally made it from the “outhouse to the White House.” We had finally seen something happen that most believed was all but impossible in a country where only a few decades ago had been embroiled in a painful battle in which Blacks refused to accept nothing less than full citizenship and equal rights.

In addition, the First Family, from start to finish, never relinquished being unapologetically Black.

With his equally-competent wife, Michelle, who exemplified style and grace at their highest level by his side, America’s “coolest” president (sorry Bill Clinton), along with their two adorable daughters who would grow up before our eyes, he fought vigorously to achieve the lofty goals first presented during his first presidential campaign.

Throughout his two terms he would face unprecedented Republican obstruction – first from a rising Tea Party and then from a GOP-dominated Senate that gained control after the 2015 election.

Nonetheless, he managed to rescue the economy from a devastating recession, brought the automobile industry from the brink of disaster, put an end to George W. Bush’s war in Iraq, reformed legislation associated with the War on Drugs – laws which disproportionately impacted people of color and reducing the federal prison population – and increased health care coverage for an estimated 20 million Americans under the auspices of his signature legislation, the Affordable Care Act. Obama will also be remembered for putting two women on the Supreme Court, making it possible for women to serve in combat alongside LGBTQ soldiers and giving gays and lesbians the long-sought after right to marry in all 50 states.

Of course there were setbacks and failures too.

Meanwhile, we who represent America’s 200-plus, Black-owned newspapers as members of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, remained disappointed that we were unable to secure a meaningful, face-to-face meeting with the president during his two terms where we could address issues specifically germane to our communities. But we’re hopeful that as the numerous obligations he once faced as president lessen after Donald Trump takes over, we’ll get the chance to query Obama on issues which for some Blacks, are still life-threatening.

Obama promised to bring change to America and he achieved success, albeit limited. But that change for which he fought each day for all Americans still stands as something our country sorely needs.

This past presidential election, once again, exposed where and how both parties marginalized the voting strength of Blacks. The Grand Old Party was not compelled to be inclusive after years of Blacks voting in mass for Democratic. The Democratic Party felt no need to significantly reward or include this voting bloc with opportunities as their support was a forgone conclusion. Hopeful my brothers and sisters will find greater self-sufficiency by pursuing higher education, becoming business owners, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of African Americans. The American dream is still possible and within reach.

This New Year do not only resolve to lose weight but to become more effective and deliberate about success. My words for the New Year are efficacy, structure and resilience.
