African Union Chair Ramaphosa Welcomes Libya Ceasefire

PRETORIA - African Union (AU) chairperson and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday, Oct. 25, welcomed the signing of a complete, country-wide and permanent ceasefire agreement between rival forces in Libya. The agreement was signed in Geneva in Switzerland on Friday, Oct. 23. “We congratulate all signatories for agreeing to this groundbreaking permanent ceasefire agreement," Ramaphosa said in a statement on Sunday. "The signing of this agreement is an important step towards silencing the guns in Africa. We further support the appeal by the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres for all stakeholders, regional and international actors, to respect the provisions of the ceasefire agreement and ensure its implementation without delay in order to bring an end to this conflict. This includes ensuring the full and unconditional respect of the UN Security Council [UNSC] arms embargo,” Ramaphosa said.

The ceasefire agreement, its enforcement, and observation marked a critical first step in creating conditions conducive for lasting peace in Libya. It paved the way for the resumption of the intra-Libyan dialogue, which was the only legitimate platform that could produce a durable, Libyan-backed political solution.

Ramaphosa stressed the need for external parties to respect the UNSC arms embargo and called on them to refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of Libya. He also emphasized the importance of AU/UN collaboration in supporting the Libyan parties in the search for a political solution.

“Guided by the spirit of fraternity and the principles of solidarity and cooperation, the AU stands ready to accompany the Libyan people on this journey towards peace, national reconciliation, and unity,” he said.

Pandiani Vows to Continue Working With Barbados

With Argentine Ambassador H.E. Gustavo Martinez Pandiani reluctantly counting down the days until his tenure in Barbados comes to an end, his diplomatic work there has not and very likely will not cease. Having collaborated heavily with Barbados on several sporting and cultural initiatives just shy of three years, Ambassador Pandiani has vowed to keep the diplomatic ties between the two countries alive and well even though he will no longer be stationed here, the Barbados Advocate reported on Oct. 25. He was speaking during a farewell art exhibit to celebrate his contribution to the development of Barbadian art at the embassy on Thursday evening. The event, which was hosted in association with Artists Alliance Barbados, capped his time in Barbados during which he presided over the unveiling of the work of 75 local artists. Drawing reference to Bridgetown, the capital, Pandiani reminded those on hand that it was easy to overlook the name’s meaning, noting that providing a bridge between differing views is at the heart of the peace efforts between nations.

Minister for Culture John King stated that the partnership between Argentina and Barbados is organic and genuine.

“The main thing is that politicians will come and go but if you get people-to-people connections, then we would have done something that will last for a lifetime. I think we have accomplished that in some aspects,” he said. WI
