WITH LYNDIA GRANT

corner

FYI: I'm writing this series amid tears of joy, watching the celebration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Now, back to business: This is a four-week series shared with readers during November, which is National Diabetes Month. It is posted to share with readers for three reasons. Firstly, I want to tell the story of my mother and her sufferings from Type 2 diabetes. Secondly, this series shares what mother taught us prior to her illness so you can understand her impact. Thirdly, I want you all to understand how Type 2 diabetes overwhelmed her, concluding with how her family learned steps to control and even rid our bodies of this devastating disease. I'm grateful of how it has helped people around the world. After learning about how Type 2 diabetes is caused, and found proven research to show how to control it, now I can help others.

Mother Grant suffered for 12 years with Type 2 diabetes, and with major complications as a result of her having had this disease. Christmas Day in the year 2000

My People Perish for the Lack of Knowledge, Pt. II

was that fateful day mother died! This Christmas is the 20th anniversary. My family skipped Christmas for nearly 10 years. However now, my coping switched to angelic Christmas tree ornaments. The majority of my ornaments are crystal angels, in memory of my mother!

Let's talk about how Mother Grant prepared her girls throughout our younger lives, until adulthood, so you can hear about a small measure of her influence over our success. My sisters and I lived together, worked together in business; and now we were going through this battle for life with our mother. During her younger years, she taught us well! Throughout our lives, we had been blessed, becoming successful business women, doing exactly what mother encouraged us to do. We had lots of success in the mass media, publicizing several major events such as a major festival that attracted more than 100,000 people, with major corporate sponsors and celebrities, and two presidential inaugural committees, Republican and Democrat. We worked for two D.C. mayors and three city council members; and I was appointed as project director to erect the Spirit of Freedom Memorial, a new African American Civil War memorial located in the city.

Now that Mother was gone, I went back to Trinity University to get my master's degree in the field of communications. When writing my master's thesis, this story was born. My Master's Thesis topic; “How I expected this Type Diabetes campaign to become national” and it has!

For National Diabetes Month, I'm proud to announce that on November 28, 2020, I'm hosting a Zoom workshop to share with my sorority sisters this same story. Our guest is Howard University Hospital's to Type 2 diabetes director, Dr. Gail Nunlee-Bland. This story lives on and will continue to live as long as I live.

Mother lost both of her legs to amputations, had kidney failure, high blood pressure and several strokes. At the young age of 61, Mother had her first major stroke that caused paralysis. She ended up in Howard University Hospital, and that's when they discovered she had Type 2 diabetes.

After learning how to publicize an issue on a massive scale, there was no way I could see the devastation caused in the life of my mother by Type 2 diabetes and fully understand this disease, yet do nothing to share this with others.

We didn't understand! Could

COUNCIL from Page 12 women were her secret weapon in winning the race and we did this by targeting her voters. I think Christina’s victory shows the voting power of women in this city.”

Henderson recognized the importance of DC WIN’s impact on her election to the council and sees being a part of the gender majority of the council as good.

“I think representation matters,” she said. “Women lead in a different sort of way. It’s a different type of debate when women are involved.”

Henderson said education, health and transportation issues will be a focus while on the council. However, despite being in the gender majority, Henderson and George will have limited power because they are freshman and will not chair committee during their first two years.

“I have always had a rule that freshman don’t chair committees,” Mendelson said.

Shelton said she understands Mendelson’s rules but that won’t prevent her organization from holding the council’s newer female members accountable for women’s issues.

“On Nov. 12, we will have a virtual meeting to question (Ward 2 D.C. Councilmember) Brooke Pinto as well as Janeese and Christina on what their agenda will be for the upcoming council period and how will they help women,” she said. “We will inform them of our 2021 Women’s Agenda and we will hold them accountable to it.”

District public schools. For him, the crux of the argument against reopening boils down to the health risks of facilitating in-person instruction with a likely resurgence of COVID-19 cases on the horizon.

He said the same logic applies to CARE classrooms that will be staffed with McKinley employees and those from other schools.

“They’re cannibalizing high school staff that’s important for virtual instruction,” Hassell said. “That creates a huge problem when high schools are struggling to make sure students are showing up and applying for college. This cripples the high schools and we’ve seen examples in Chicago and Boston.” WI

with margin, in some cases, less than one percent. There was no takeover of the Senate (yet), and Democrats lost seats in the House of Representatives. And more than 70 million people affirmed Donald Trump, which reveals the stark division in our nation.

Exhale (relief). Inhale (recognition). And then just roll your sleeves up and get to work. Yes, there is much work to do. There are two elections for Senate seats in Georgia. They'll be decided on Jan. 5, and if Democrats can pull both off, President-elect Biden will have the Senate he needs to make policy changes.

Meanwhile, 45 has 70 days to wreak havoc on our nation. He can randomly fire folks, mismanage agencies (more so than he already has), develop harmful executive orders. As of this writing, he has yet to concede the election, even though he has no possible chance of winning. His refusal to smell the coffee slows the transition process, but since this is about him, not about our nation, he really doesn't care. Yes, we have work to do. We need to roll up our sleeves and get to it. Civic engagement is not a seasonal thing, it's an all-the-time thing. We get the government that we choose to participate in.

So kudos to the folks like Melanie Campbell (National Coalition of Black Civic Participation), LaTosha Brown (Black Voters Matter), Stacey Abram (Fair Fight) and the many others who raised awareness, got the vote out, and then protected it. Exhale. Inhale. Get to work!

ternational Airport. While in Rwanda, please remember to wash your hands frequently, engage in social distancing, and wear a mask." That "someone" turned out to be a robot, which repeated that friendly, yet firm message several times before I exited the baggage claim area.

From there I proceeded to a government-approved hotel where I would spend the night. Upon my arrival at the hotel but before I checked in, I was required to take another COVID-19-related test. I was then quarantined in my hotel room until the next morning, when upon receiving my negative test result, I was then free to move throughout the country. During my 14-day visit, traveling to three major cities and parts of the rural countryside, everyone wore masks, from the youngest children to elderly people, with virtually no exception. Temperature checks were performed the virus, he would have been reelected.

Trump may have been voted out of office but Trumpism is very much alive and well. We had better be united and ready to promote and protect our economic, cultural and political interests. I suggest that one thing serious Black peo-

It became abundantly clear that Rwanda took very seriously its mission to protect its citizens from this dreaded virus. The result: As of Oct. 28, in a country of just over 12 million people, they have experienced only 35 deaths from the coronavirus! The country implemented the key preventive measures almost immediately after the first case was reported on March 13. No hesitancy or uncertainty on the part of the national government and no squabbling among the people as far as I could tell based upon my conversations with many people. Despite the inconvenience imposed upon the populace and, yes, the economic challenges they faced, the many people I spoke to were gratified with the measures implemented since it spared the nation from countless more cases and deaths from COVID-19.

Yet here is the contradiction: after ple need to do is to study and act on chapters 14 (Organizing a Race for Action) and 15 (The Shape of Things to Come: A Master Plan) of Chancellor William's book "The Destruction of Black Civilization: Great Issues of a Race from 4500 B.C. to 2000 A.D."

a very satisfying, safe visit to one of Africa's jewels of a nation, upon my return to the United States at Dulles International Airport, no government official asked me any COVID-19-related questions! No one inquired as to whether I had been sick while out of the country. There were no temperature checks administered. No official asked for a recent COVID-19 test result. In fact I was subjected to the same procedures that occurred in January after my last visit to Rwanda. So many safeguards were implemented by Rwanda to protect its citizens from the potential threat of travelers entering its territory. Was my experience upon my return to America another indication of the cavalier approach and reaction to the pandemic still raging in the United States? Perhaps we could benefit from securing advice from an African nation that has achieved remarkable success in fighting this pandemic.

we have done something differently? We didn't know how an improved diet with extremely limited amounts of sugar with major reductions in eating carbohydrates and getting regular physical exercise could have made a difference in her life. Now that I've learned from her doctor, from research, from the National Institute of Health, from Johns Hopkins and American Diabetes Association and others, I must share this good news with you!

What exactly is Type 2 diabetes? Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose. It results from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both, and too much inflammation is in your body.

For those of you who refuse to follow the rules, Type 2 diabetes can be associated with serious complications such as losing toes, a foot, legs, eyes, organs and more. Plus it brings on premature death, as in the case of my Mom. On the other hand, people with Type 2 diabetes can turn this thing around; how, by taking measures to reduce the likelihood of such. According to recent studies found by the National Institute of Health (NIH) some researchers believe that African Americans, and some others inherited a "thrifty gene" from their African ancestors.

Secondly, debt collectors who opt to contact consumers by electronic media must also offer consumers a "reasonable and simple method" to opt out of these communications that include social media, emails and text messages. "Our rule applies these protections to modern technologies," said CFPB Director Kathleen Kraninger. "And our rule will allow consumers, if they prefer, to limit the ability of debt collectors to communicate with them through these newer communications methods."

But for the 233 consumer, civil rights and legal advocates who filed public comments on the proposed rule, the announcement sent mixed messages about what it proposed as well as what it delayed.

Guidelines on "zombie" debt, the term used to describe debts that outlived statutory limitations for collection, are expected to be announced this December. Similarly, debt collectors' practices of leaving messages with third parties or on postcards were not addressed, nor was negative information on consumers' credit reports. "As we face a dire and worsening economic crisis, we will be keeping a close eye on the ‘zombie debt' rule, coming in December, which could leave consumers more vulnerable to deception and harassment," said Linda Jun, senior policy counsel at Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund. "Collectors should not be allowed to bring expired debt back to life by luring people into making a small payment that revives a debt that would otherwise be past the timeline for a lawsuit."

A new survey from the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) analyzed how the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands currently protect wages, bank account assets, and personal property from seizure by debt collectors.

The survey warns that once the pandemic recedes, families struggling to get back on their feet are likely to face a wave of debt collector lawsuits for medical bills, back rent, credit card debt, the balance due on repossessed cars, and even utility bills. The report also recommends that states allow debtors to keep "a reasonable amount of money" to enable debtors to pay daily living costs such as rent, utilities, day care and transportation.

This gap in state regulation became evident when federal stimulus checks were deposited in families' bank accounts and then garnished by debt collectors. According to NCLC, not one state currently meets five basic standards of debt regulation: • Preventing debt collectors from seizing so much of the debtor's wages that the debtor is pushed below a living wage. • Allowing the debtor to keep a used car of at least average value. • Preserving the family's home — at least a median-value home. • Preserving a basic amount in a bank account so that the debtor has minimal funds to pay such essential costs as rent, utilities, and commuting expenses. • Preventing seizure and sale of the debtor's necessary household goods.

It's hard to build family wealth when you're burdened with heavy debts and harassed by abusive debt collection practices. No amount of collector harassment will result in payments when no funds are available to pay past due bills. Further, any policy that denies indebted consumers the ability to preserve essential services like housing or utilities is unsustainable. The financial disparities that Black America strives to endure would significantly diminish if an inclusive financial marketplace became a reality. The crux of many burdensome debts is the lack of affordable and accessible financial services.

It is time to stop seizing our hardearned monies. WI

of racism and our intolerance of gender, gender identity, religion and ethnicity are deeply woven into the fabric of our culture — some believe too deeply to overcome. I don't predict but hope that the 2020 election provides us with a president-elect who will lead us away from past efforts to exploit differences and toward the realization that we have more in common.

While "character" is a nebulous description, the 2020 election postscript I most desire is the election of leaders with character. Character has been described as "what you do when you think no one is looking." I reject a leader who has questionable loyalties and indebtedness to unknown sources. His decisions cannot be trusted.

I don't predict but pray and believe that my 2020 vote served to support these hopes! WI

square, according to their own rigged rules. And then turning around and complaining that the other party had somehow cheated.

Such hypocrites. In the eastern states, where the late counting of early votes caused Biden to overtake and out-poll Trump in the end, Trumpistas demanded that the vote counting be halted. In a couple of western states where late ballots narrowed Biden's lead, those same forces shouted, "count every vote!"

Face it. Trump is the "white" candidate, and his supporters have shown themselves to be willing and capable of fighting and killing in order to preserve this country's white supremacy. They are not in the least interested in doing anything which might appeal to Black folks in order to make this a "more perfect union." No. They want it all their way.

The sad part about all of this is that Democrats — the white liberals in this picture — now want everyone to make nice with the rabid right-wingers, white tribalists. They condemned the Muslims at the Democratic Convention for having Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour as a speaker at their caucus. They kicked progressives like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to the curb during the campaign, although both of them and their supporters outperformed the "skeered" liberals who lost seats back to GOP House candidates.

Instead of figuring out how to make Senate Republicans feel the pain of the wrath of a Democratic president and House of Representatives, they want to bring them into the Democratic "big tent." For example, CNN reports that Biden intends to utilize the war monger and former George W. Bush Vice President Dick Cheney as a foreign affairs adviser during his transition.

Biden may even be considering

appointing former Ohio Republican Governor John Kasich to his cabinet. They still think they can make inroads into the white tribal base. I said it during Biden's milquetoast (albeit successful) campaign, that the Democrats were going up against the Republicans with their "switchblades" out of their pockets and open. The only thing is, they didn't realize that the GOP had already turned the battle into a hatchet fight. Now, the silly liberals want to put their switchblades back into their pockets and try to appease the armed, the locked and loaded Republikkkans. It won't work. The fact of the matter is that the overwhelming majority of white voters — and their champion Donald J. Trump, et al. — would just as soon burn the country to the ground and then preside over the ashes rather than surrender their precious white advantage.
