Casino Project Causes Uproar in Prince George’s County

By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer It’s a $925 million project that has everyone seeing dollar signs.

It also has many in and around Prince George’s County, particularly in the African-American community, seeing red.

Gaming giant MGM Resorts

will build a world-class destination resort casino at National Harbor, which company officials said will create thousands of new, local jobs, and provide enormous economic benefits to the region.

“This is very important because for too long we’ve had big businesses come in here and the

end result was that there’s little or nothing that benefits our community,” said Obie Patterson, a county council member who represents District 8 in Prince George’s County, which includes National Harbor.

“We want to see tangible benefits. We want to make sure that there’s a certain percentage of

our community involved. There is the electrical, plumbing, and all of the components that come along with the project. We want operational hiring and we want to establish floor levels and we want summer employment for high school students and things that show that MGM is a good partner,” said Patterson, 76.

Live Radio Broadcast Allows Community to Vent

By D. Kevin McNeir WI Contributing Writer Crime may be a common occurrence in many of America’s urban settings but some District residents decided to speak up rather than abandon their homes or their communities.

So to give people a chance to share their perspectives, the city’s top hip-hop radio station, 95.5 FM WPGC, broadcast their morning show live last Thursday from the heart of Southeast. On air personalities teamed up with The Washington Informer outside of the newspaper’s offices, inviting youth, activists and longtime residents to step up to the mic.

The Rev. Anthony Motley, a well-known minister in Southeast, came up with the idea after a shooting erupted on May 6, a stone’s throw away from the newspaper’s offices leaving three youth injured.

“DJ Flex had me on his show recently and after the kids were shot here on Martin Luther King Avenue, he asked me how we could end the constant negative reports about our community,” said Motley, 65.

“We have challenges like any other area but most of our residents have lived here for many years and don’t condone negative behavior. What’s needed is better leadership and more people getting involved.”

Fifth-generation Washingtonian Ronald Moten, who describes himself as a “freedom fighter,” said he once contributed to the problems in Southeast before turning his life around.

“Hurt people hurt others and we have a lot of hurt people living in Southeast that are in pain and are ticking time bombs,” said Moten, 44. “We need the support of the entire village, we need more structured events for young adults and kids and we need to build stronger relationships between the generations. Time is running out.”

The broadcast kicked off a summer campaign called, “95 Days of Peace,” sponsored by WPGC. Jasmine Turner, a recent Marymount graduate, works as one of the station’s Street Team members and believes the initiative will make a difference.

“Young people get into trouble when they have too much idle time on their hands,” said Turner, 21, a Southeast resident. “The Street Team helps promote positive activities for the radio station and we’re out in the community listening to our peers. Sure we want jobs, but we also want more afterschool activities and more structured, safe events for young adults.”

Police continue to search for two suspects believed to have been involved in the May 6 shootings but one lifetime resident of Southeast said she’s had enough.

“First, the news got it wrong again because those kids got shot right outside of the phone store here on Martin Luther King Avenue – not near Ballou High,” said Karen Owens, 55. “My grandson attends Imagine Southeast Public Charter School right across the street and I’m putting him somewhere else. It’s no longer safe and the police aren’t doing anything.”

May 30 1854 – Congress passes the Kansas-Nebraska Act that repealed the Missouri Compromise and opened the Northern territories to slavery. More specifically, it allowed whites in Kansas and Nebraska to decide for whether or not slavery would be allowed in the territories. 1903 – One of the most outstanding poets in the history of Black America, Countee Cullen, is born in Louisville, Kentucky or Baltimore, Maryland.

May 31 1921 – The infamous and bloody Tulsa (Oklahoma) Riots begin. Whites go on a violent rampage lasting several days.

When the rioting was over, an estimated 21 whites and 60 Blacks were dead. In addition, as many as 15,000 Blacks were left homeless as hundreds of homes and businesses were burned to the ground.

The area bearing the brunt of the destruction was known as the “Black Wall Street” because of its large number of African American owned businesses.

June 1 1864 – Solomon George Washington Dill is murdered by angry whites. Dill was one of those rarities in Southern society – a poor white man who supported an end to slavery and Black demands for social justice. Dill’s

“crime” was giving what some whites considered “an incendiary speech” to a group of South Carolina Blacks.

1973 – Detroit’s WGPR becomes the nation’s first Blackowned television station. It was granted a license to operate on this day in 1973 but did not actually go on air until September 1975.

June 2 1863 – Abolitionist and “Underground Railroad Conductor” Harriet Tubman leads a force of Union Army guerrilla soldiers into Maryland and frees over 700 slaves. Tubman was one of the most noteworthy women in the anti-slavery struggle prior to the Civil War and became a leading voice in the call for the federal government to allow Blacks to fight in the war.

1899 – African Americans observe a “National Day of Fasting” to protest lynching and other racial attacks against Blacks. The day of protest was called by the National Afro-American Council.

June 3 1906 – Entertainer Josephine Baker is born in St. Louis, Missouri. At 16, she starred in the hit

and controversial musical “Shuffle Along.” However, she did not achieve fame until she left the United States and moved to Paris, France where her exotic dancing and singing made her an international sensation.

1942 – Singer Curtis Mayfield is born in Chicago, Illinois. His musical style combined the Blues, Gospel and Soul music popular in the area at the time.

June 4 1972 – College professor and Black activist Angela Davis is acquitted by a jury of charges that she assisted and conspired with the young men involved in a deadly 1970 shootout at the Marin County courthouse in California. The assault on the courthouse was an attempt to free imprisoned Black activist George Jackson. At least three people were killed during the escape attempt. Davis, a Birmingham, Alabama native who became a member of the Communist Party, spent 16 months in prison but on this day in 1972 she was found not guilty of all charges by an allwhite San Jose jury.

He then changed his stance to something a little more flexible. I’m in favor with whatever action will force the team to change its name.

I don’t know if there is anything in the NFL’s constitution that gives the commissioner the power to force Snyder to change the name, but he and the other owners can apply pressure.

While Congress weighing in was helpful, I don’t think it can do much more.

Several restaurants and retail stores will accompany the casino project as will an entertainment and concert venue that could attract some of show businesses biggest names.

The casino will consist of about 3,600 slot machines and 140 gaming tables while the resort will provide nearly 5,000 parking spaces.

“It’s a lot of opportunity, but I’m not sure that the decision makers will listen to Obie Patterson or any of us citizens when it comes to our concerns about being shut out of jobs and contracts,” said Lucious Hall, 39, who lives in Oxon Hill.

Patterson crafted a community benefits agreement that he wants MGM officials to adhere to.

The agreement includes MGM

establishing a job training facility within a three-mile radius of the casino; the designation of an executive staff member to work specifically with the community and the staff member must be someone who resides locally.

The staffer would also be required to attend civic and homeowners’ association meetings, meet with business leaders, and the faith-based community.

“We ought to make sure that African Americans and our local business people get a piece of the pie,” Jerry Mathis, a local resident, told Patterson and other council members during a meeting earlier this month.

Patterson said he wants MGM to purchase at least three foreclosed homes in the area and donate them to the Prince George’s County Redevelopment Authority to be used to provide housing for homeless veterans.

areas near the casino. He said he’s urging residents now to call the county executive to express their concerns and to press for minority and local inclusion.

“The Office of the County Executive is currently nego-

tiating a community benefits agreement with MGM that will cover hiring and opportunities for local contractors,” said Scott L. Peterson, a spokesman for Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, III. “This is an important responsibility, and we are putting the best interest of our residents first and foremost during these negotiations,” Peterson said.

Patterson conceded that the fate of the community benefits agreement now lies in the hands of the county executive.

MGM officials, however, said they intend to hire qualified individuals regardless of race.

Company officials said diversity remains a key priority for MGM because it helps to foster creativity and it adds to the rich cultural mix in the communities the casino operates.

Also, officials said MGM’s history of diversity has netted the company awards from Diversity Inc., and Black Enterprise magazines.

For the National Harbor casino, the company earlier an-

nounced that Radio One owner Cathy Hughes and her son plan to invest $40 million in the project, which means that prominent African Americans would have a financial stake.

“I think MGM knew right up front that they would have an inclusion in the project from the community and that they certainly had to include African Americans, not just as a face, but in a capacity to perform,” said Ronald Lipford, president of the Temple Hills-based Arel Architects Inc., an African-American firm that signed on to work with the design team and others on the massive project.

Lipford, who grew up in Northwest and attended Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School before graduating from Hampton University, will act as the primary liaison between regulators in Maryland and the development team which is based in Las Vegas.

Architect Treasures MGM Casino Role

By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer Ronald Lipford served six years as architectural commissioner of the Prince George’s County Historic Preservation Commission and he played a key role in developing the New Carrollton Gateway, a high school, a police station and two local fire stations.

So, when officials at MGM Resorts promised to hire local and minority firms for its $925 million casino project at National Harbor, Lipford, the president and CEO of Arel Architects, Inc. in Temple Hills, proved to be a no-brainer.

“Arel Architects comes highly recommended and we were impressed, not only with Ron Lipford’s strong roots in the community, but also by his company’s record of results,” said Lorenzo Creighton, president of MGM National Harbor.

“We’re confident that we’ve found a strong partner,” Creighton said.

It hasn’t always been so simple for Lipford, a D.C. native who grew up in Northwest and attended Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School.

“We’ve been disappointed a lot,” said Lipford, 54, a Hampton University graduate with post-graduate studies at both Howard and Harvard universities. “We were especially disappointed that this didn’t happen with the Gaylord project.”

“It’s what black businesses go through. We’re scrutinized much more, but there are a lot of hurdles that we’re beginning to overcome,” he said.

A licensed architect with more than 30 years experience in design, project management, scheduling and inspections, Lipford started Arel in 1991.

He said he’s assembled a staff of sharp, seasoned, dedicated, and trusted professionals who continue to be the backbone of the firm’s success and impeccable reputation.

As a child, while most of his peers played sports and participated in various hobbies, Lipford said architectural design captured his interest “I was born and raised on U Street in Washington where I watched the [construction] of the Howard University Hospital right in my backyard. I watched as they tore down Griffith Stadium and that’s what convinced me that I wanted to operate one of those bulldozers,” said Lipford, who’s

The MGM project, which local lawmakers and residents continue to demand the company include minority and local businesses, counts as a major coup for Lipford.

Earlier this month, the Prince George’s County Planning Board unanimously approved the site plans for the project, which will be built along the Potomac River.

Plans include a casino with about 55,000-square-feet of retail space and 50,000-square-feet of conference room space.

A hotel with 300 rooms and a 3,000-seat entertainment and performance theater are also included in the development in which officials are expected to break ground in July.

MGM officials, who estimate that the project will create more than 4,000 permanent jobs, have targeted a grand opening for July, 2016.

I know that I’m adding to this project, but what I’ve already taken away from this is that you have to be prepared, be ready from Day One,” he said. “We’ve gotten our foot in the door and the only way you stay is if you deliver. By James Wright WI Staff Writer Bowser Talks Election, Agenda to Ward 3 Democrats D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4), the Democratic nominee for mayor of the District, knows the campaign leading up to the November general election will be nothing less than acrimonious.

“This race is shaping up to be one of the nastiest we will ever see,” Bowser told the crowd of about 100 during a meeting of the Ward 3 Democrats at The Methodist Home in Northwest on May 22. “However, we are going to conduct the election on the high ground.”

Bowser’s chief opponent will be D.C. Council member David Catania (I-At Large), who has decided to give up his seat to run for mayor. Catania’s campaign has already released a flyer that has an image of a woman whose back is turned and controlled by puppet strings.

Bowser, 41, has pledged not to engage Catania until he meets the requirements to get on the November ballot.

Bowser won Ward 3 decisively in the April 1 primary. During her 45-minute presentation, she promised to expand recreation and library hours, modernize the city’s infrastructure, make the city more affordable for middle-income individuals and families, improve the health care system and create more contracting opportunities for minorities and women. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier will keep her job in a Bowser administration but there will definitely be new leadership at the helm of the Fire and Emergency Medical Services department, she said.

Bowser also pledged to lobby members of Congress not only on issues dealing with District statehood but to secure additional federal money for projects such as the Walter Reed Campus in Northwest, St. Elizabeths in Southeast and Washington area subway and bus systems.

Bowser told the crowd that she will work for the residents if elected as the next mayor but she will need their help.

“I will talk to every Democrat, Republican, independent that I can before the election,” she said. “This is not a walk-away election for Democrats and we will have to work hard to win.”

McDuffie Takes Maiden Trip to Las Vegas D.C. Council member Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5) traveled to Las Vegas last week on a mission that didn’t include sightseeing, rather to sell retailers on the merits of his ward.

McDuffie joined D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray (D), D.C. Council members Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), Vincent Orange (D-At Large), and D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) and others for the prestigious International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) annual convention. Despite the city’s bright lights, McDuffie stayed on course with the business at hand.

“I went there focused on economic development and job creation for Ward 5 residents,” said McDuffie, 38. “I [went] to see opportunities to bring additional retail to the ward.”

States, counties and cities from across the country send their elected officials to the ICSC convention to generate business for their jurisdictions. The District has done well at the ICSC, with retailers such as Walmart, Costco, and Whole Foods setting up shop in the city as a re-

sult of conversations that first took place at the convention.

McDuffie said that he told retailers about the benefits of opening up operations in Ward 5.

“I told them about possibilities along New York Avenue, Fort Lincoln, the McMillan Reservoir site and Dakota Crossing,” he said.

“While Dakota Crossing is built and has Costco there, I told them that there is space for other retailers, too.”

McDuffie, who serves as the chairman pro tem of the council, emphasized that D.C. continues to experience an economic boon.

“I told [retailers] that they could make money in the District, with 1,000 people moving to the city every month and that our Costco not only serves District residents but those from the suburbs [as well],” he said. “I told them that the New York Avenue corridor has 132,000 cars a day that [drive along the corridor] and those are potential customers.”

Evans, Orange and Bowser attend the ICSC every year but McDuffie didn’t commit to the annual trip.

“It depends on what the retailers do and whether they cut deals to come to Ward 5,” he said.WI

That night, someone entered her daughter Unique’s apartment and spirited away the 24-year-old mother of two. She has yet to be found.

“I never thought in a million years that this would happen to me,” said Harris, owner of a geriatric nursing facility. “She had a soft, passive side and I was always worried about her. Someone came in the middle of the night on Oct. 10 and took her.

Sometimes I have to pull off to the side of the road and cry.

I have 100 different emotions a day. I’m trying to keep myself balanced.”

“Sometimes you don’t want to get up in the morning. You just want to stay wrapped up in a ball.

I couldn’t imagine before what this felt like. I could sympathize before, now I empathize. All my faith is in the Heavenly Father.

He gave her to me and he will bring her back to me.”

throng stood poised to jump into action. And at the start and finish line, enthusiastic supporters cheered on the athletes.

Twenty-two minutes later, the first runner crossed the finish line.

After the race, everyone milled around in the parking lot overlooking the water. People chatted, laughed and enjoyed the sunshine and the warm weather which happened to be a vast improvement from last year. Young and old unwound by dancing to pulsating music provided by a DJ, then cheered loudly as Fox 5 Anchor Allison Seymour and Fox’s Community Relations Manager Micheline Bowman announced winners of each category.

“This year, our focus is on empowering our community to take action,” said Natalie Wilson, co-founder of the Black and Missing Foundation. “People need to tell what they know and do and say something. Too many of our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters are going missing. One million people of color have been reported missing in the past five years.”

“There are a number of reasons such as the increase in the number of people who are lured into sex trafficking, especially teens. We need better laws. And parents need to do a better job and know what their children are doing on Facebook, social media and in their free time.”

Grieving friends and family members couldn’t contain their anguish and a palpable sense of sorrow pervaded the event.

Missing eight-year-old Relisha Rudd wasn’t far from many people’s minds. She disappeared in March after leaving in the com-

pany of Kahlil Tatum, a janitor at a homeless shelter in Southeast.

Michael Muse’s son Christian, who’s been missing for almost two years, appeared on the race flyer. The older Muse ran in the event and dozens of family and friends came out to remember Christian.

“Really nothing has happened since my son went missing. I’m disappointed in the lack of action on the part of the police department,” said the 48-yearold Ft. Washington, Maryland resident and member of the gogo band Rare Essence. “They immediately named it non-critical. After seven months, I found out that he fell off the missing persons list and no one had informed me of it. I had to refile the case. We got some air time after 16 months of him being missing.”

“Now that I’m talking with the people at Black and Missing, I found out that he’s not even on the National Missing Person’s list. We’ve heard that he’s been killed or in the streets looking homeless but it’s always from someone who knows someone.

I’m at my wits end to get someone else to care about it. What’s strange is that he hasn’t touched his bank account in two years and they still haven’t investigated that. I hope that this walk will show mass media that we count.

People of color are underserved in missing person cases. Hopefully this will show that we have to take care of us and that there are people, black or white that care.”

Report Urges Reform in Juvenile Justice

High Risk of Victimization, Solitary Confinement Cited

By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer Teenagers in Washington, D.C. spent more than 10,000 days in jail with older inmates because of a statute that enables federal prosecutors to send youth accused of felonies to adult court.

A new report by DC Lawyers for Youth (DCLY) and the Campaign for Youth Justice (CFYJ) highlighted inadequate facilities, the high risk of victimization, the use of solitary confinement, and the long-term consequences of adult felony convictions on youth sentenced to prison.

The report, released on May 19, also cited the failure of the justice system to deter future crimes among the reasons for a call to reform the District’s approach to the prosecution of youth as adults.

“The adult system is no place for kids,” said Carmen Daugherty, the policy director at CFYJ in Northwest.

“Trying youth as adults jeopardizes public safety as there is no evidence that adult court deters youth crime in general and compelling evidence that it actually increases recidivism among those who are processed through it,” Daugherty said.

Authors of the report, titled, “Capital City Correction: Reforming DC’s Use of Adult Incarceration Against Youth,” noted that, between 2007 and 2012, a total of 541 youth under the age of 18 had been detained The Washington Informer

or incarcerated at the 1,500-bed Correctional Treatment Facility, an adult jail in Southeast.

African Americans comprised 97 percent of those inmates while all others are considered minorities. Also, officials list 98 percent of the young prisoners as male.

While in adult jails, teens are housed in a developmentally inappropriate and inadequate facility where they receive limited educational, behavioral health, and vocational services and little time with their families, the report’s authors said.

Most of the time that youth spend in adult lockup comes prior to the trial, when they’re presumed innocent under the law.

“While in custody in D.C. jail, my son became withdrawn and angry and he began to isolate himself, and then he began to think that individuals in positions of authority had already labeled and stigmatized him,” Catreeda Lloyd, a Northwest resident, told CFYJ officials.

Lloyd’s 16-year-old son stood trial as an adult and spent three months in the D.C. jail before prosecutors changed felony charges to a misdemeanor, she said.

“Immediately following his arrest, my son began to feel inadequate, unjustly accused, and like everything was crashing down,” Lloyd said. “He began second guessing himself, and wondering whether or not anybody cared.”

Hailes, the program manager for Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop in Northwest, talked about her bittersweet experience this Mother’s Day without her teenage son, who’s in prison with adults.

Hailes, in a blog, also expressed concern about her young son’s vulnerability around hardened and much older criminals.

“Because Washington, D.C., is not a state, and does not have a federal facility, our children are sent to remote and oftentimes inaccessible adult prisons all across America. As a woman who has always prided herself for being a stickler for self-accountability, I’m not suggesting that my son should have gotten away with a slap on the wrist,” she said.

“However, research has shown that placing children in adult prisons, rather than juvenile facilities makes them highly susceptible to repeated criminal behavior, negative influence from adult prisoners, and physical and sexual abuse.”

CFYJ has continued efforts to end the practice of trying, sentencing and incarcerating individuals under the age of 18 as adults.

Officials at the nonprofit organization have also urged state governors to comply with the Prison Rape Elimination

PREA bans the housing of youth in the general adult population. It prohibits contact between adults and teenagers in common areas and requires the constant supervision of younger prisoners.

The law also limits the use of isolation of youth in adult facilities because many professional therapists said it could cause or exacerbate mental illness and it’s been linked to teen suicide.

Since 2012, nearly $40 million has been given to D.C. and various states to help bring prisons and jails into compliance with PREA. “Federal prosecutors having unfettered discretion to send our D.C. kids to the adult jail flies in the face of a smart, balanced, fair-justice system,” said R. Daniel Okonkwo, a Ward 6 resident and the executive director at DCLY. “Judges should play a role in

reviewing both the alleged facts of the case and the facts of the child to determine whether the youth and public safety would be better served by the rehabilitative goals and services of the juvenile justice system,” Okonkwo said.

DCLY officials said 23 states, including Maryland and Virginia, have recently taken steps to reduce youth contact with adults in prison.

Okonkwo said DCLY recommends three policy reforms for the District of Columbia to promote youth accountability and rehabilitation.

He said judges should be allowed to review a youth’s case to consider whether it should be moved to juvenile court and prison officials should be prohibited from holding young people in adult facilities while they’re awaiting trial.

“They should also end the once-an-adult-always-an-adult [policy], which requires that a youth previously charged as an adult to be so in the future,” Okonkwo said. “That should be the case no matter [what] the suspected offense is.”WI

Blacks Harnessing the Power of Capitalism Among Donald Sterling’s rants he said something more Blacks need to recognize as truth. Sterling’s comments that: “When Jews get successful they will help their people. And some of the African-Americans … they don’t want to help anybody” were neither unfair nor racist. Start with his point: the majority of Blacks don’t help other Blacks. It is a reality that most honest Blacks will admit is true. And it’s something that our community has grappled with for years. If you just focus on the messenger instead of the message you will miss the truth that in our culture Blacks have a history of not supporting one another. Look at Blacks’ economics versus those of Jews. Of all groups’ “collective capitalism” practices Jews are among the best, while Blacks are the worst.

Research data shows: a dollar circulates up to 12 times within Jewish circles, but is in and out of the Black community within 12 hours.

Where do Blacks Americans go from here? Blacks’ economic status is a reflection of our counter-capitalistic actions. Since the 1960s, Blacks have been on “a mission” to associate and acculturate with White society. All that assimilated was our money.

Blacks need to help each other out of the bottom of the barrel.

Isn’t it about time for Blacks to become more “preoccupied” with putting “race issues” in our personal practices and patterns. Too often Blacks compete against each other. To be competitive in American politics and capitalism, Black Americans have to rid themselves of the “crabsin-a-barrel syndrome” and start prioritizing race-based issues and practices.

We need to drop the “mainstream” stint to do things among African Americans that build wealth through ownership and development of businesses. This way of thinking and acting is an offshoot of Black Nationalism.

It’s time greater numbers of us become Black Capitalists in the mode of Booker T. Washington and Robert Reed Church, who founded the nation’s first Blackowned bank in 1906, Solvent

Where do you think Sterling buys his food, clothes or banks?

When did you last purchase something from a minority vendor? How often do you pass a minority-owned restaurant on your way to eat at “a name brand” dining establishment?

How do you identify? Are you Black first and American second?

This is a difficult question for Blacks with a “mainstream orientation” to answer, but probably isn’t for Jewish, Asian or immigrant groups. Many of us desire to be American, Democrat, Republican, Conservative or Liberal before being “Black.”

Being “Black first” requires dedication to a political ideology that focuses on Blacks’ interest.

The principle objectives of Black nationalists are unity and self-determination – independent from European society. Martin Delany, an African-American abolitionist, in the 1800s, is considered the foremost Black nationalist of his day.

The origins of Black Nationalism lie in the political thought of people like Marcus Garvey, Martin Delany, Henry Highland Garnet, Edward Wilmot Blyden and Paul Cuffe among others.

Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association of the 1910s and 1920s proved to be the most powerful Black Nationalist movement to date that boasted 11 million members. Black Nationalist philosophy began when the Africans were brought ashore to the Americas. After the Revolutionary War, personalities such as Prince Hall, Richard Allen, and Absalom Jones started important organizations such as the Free African Society, African Masonic lodges and church institutions. Modern Black Nationalism stresses building separate communities that promote racial pride and collective resources.

Daymond John Enlightens Aspiring Entrepreneurs

By D. Kevin McNeir WI Contributing Writer When the US economy plummeted during the recent recession, some Americans threw caution to the wind and started their own businesses. However, success requires more than just a good idea and a creative marketing plan.

So it should come as no surprise that several hundred business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs opted for a working lunch last Thursday to hear from Daymond John, founder, president and CEO of FUBU and a regular on the ABC reality TV series “Shark Tank.”

“I began designing clothing for the hip-hop generation because it was something that I truly loved,” said John, who started his urban sportswear empire in his home with the help of four friends.

“You have to treat your business like it’s your child. Then you get the experience of seeing it grow.

Of course there were challenges like knowing and finding the right resources. But following my stepfather’s advice, I soon learned to put aside race and instead focus on green – how we can make money together,” said John, 45.

John said business start-ups don’t need millions of dollars to promote their products or ideas.

He advised potential entrepreneurs to start small and to make sure that a “proof of concept” exists.

“Assets feed you while liabilities eat you up,” he said. “So it makes sense to take affordable steps as

Co-sponsors of the event, held at the Gateway Pavilion St. Elizabeths East in Southeast, included: Startup Grind, DC Innovates, Microsoft and Digital DC, a marketing campaign and economic development initiative led by the District’s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.

Catherine Buell, executive director, St. Elizabeths East, said business-related programs held at the recently completed Pavilion continue to gain in popularity.

“We opened in October 2013 and have had over 15,000 people attend our events in just six months,” she said. “It’s a mixture of folks from Wards 7 and 8 but others are hearing about us through social media. The response to our programs is great.”

One hopeful business owner from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, said she knew John would have “some nuggets to share” and she wanted to hear from the mogul himself.

“The word that comes to mind when I think about Daymond John is dedication,” said Leslie Smith, 43. “It’s all about finding ways to brand, grow and expand your business. He’s been there and done it all successfully.”

One Southeast resident said he recently decided to start his own marketing and consulting business after working 18 years with a related firm.

“There are all kinds of start-ups being formed but as John said, one key to success is making the right contacts,” said Jay Woods, 44. “I’ve already made some great connections here today. We need even more of these kinds of programs in our two neighboring wards.”

Putting a different spin on the “Shark Tank” show, one Southeast businessman said he’d like to see the community have opportunities to invest in local start-ups.

“I’m working toward developing crowd funding services that replicate ‘Shark Tank’ but allow smaller investments to come from the community,” said Henry Burger.

“This area has entrepreneurs who are anxious to get started.

When you allow people to have a voice, to invest a few of their dollars and to be part of the decision-making process, you have what is called a ‘win-win’ situation.

We need to pool our resources,” said Burger, 55.

Two friends who met on a dating website, decided to capitalize on their mutual interests in business.

“Our start-up company, ‘They Met Online,’ launches on Sunday, June 1 as a one-shop stop for online dating resources,” said Michelle Talbert, 44.

“John started from nothing but was willing to grind to succeed. He took hold of his own boot straps, learning, earning and then returning assets to his own community. It may take time, but we’ll eventually make our business a success,” the Northwest resident said.

Her business partner, Ricardo Kingsbury, said great benefits come from being part of the D.C. high tech community.

“The goal of our business is to rate and review online dating sites and share that information with others,” he said. “And the speakers that I’ve heard because of my affiliation with Startup Grind and their partners have been priceless.

With Lupus, no two cases are alike.

Some who suffer with the debilitating illness develop kidney problems, while others prematurely battle heart disease, strokes and lung inflammation.

“From the time I was 17 years old, I have been in and out of hospitals, fighting this unpredictable disease. Starting off in my joints, lupus has now spread to my heart, lungs, kidneys, nervous system and any other organ it feels like attacking on a daily basis,” said Mallory Dixon, an advocate with the Lupus Foundation of America in Northwest.

Dixon, 28, who’s appeared on NBC’s “Today” show and has given speeches about the deadly illness, said she’s spent more than 150 days in a hospital bed due to lupus, with her longest stay lasting 86 days.

“I have been through chemotherapy, many blood transfusions, dialysis, plasma changes, multiple ventilations, a tracheotomy, and even needed to relearn how to walk,” she said.

Like many others who suffer with lupus, Dixon has helped the Lupus Foundation observe National Lupus Awareness Month, which occurs each year in May. The foundation’s leaders have urged those with the illness and others to help increase awareness and ultimately assist in determining what they call the cruel mystery that’s lupus.

Foundation officials said research they’ve conducted show that 72 percent of Americans between 18 and 34 have either not heard about lupus or they know little to nothing beyond its name.

In the District, officials kicked off a month-long awareness campaign with the, “D.C. Walk to End Lupus Now,” event which entertainer Nick Cannon served as grand marshal and his presence helped to attract a large crowd to the eighth annual fundraiser along Pennsylvania Avenue in North-

west on April 19.

Cannon, 33, who’s married to pop star Mariah Carey, also suffers from the chronic, complex and prevalent autoimmune disease that health officials said affects more than 1.5 million Americans.

“Honestly, I feel like I’m here to be a part of the community [rather] than to be [the] one to stand in front of the crowd,” Cannon said at the event.

“I’m truly here in support [of lupus] more than anything else.”

Officials said, short of a cure, lupus sufferers and their families need all the support they can muster.

“It’s a disease that doctors have trouble diagnosing because the symptoms oftentimes come and go and they said there are no real tests they can run to find it,” said Camille Paige, 35, a Southeast resident diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) 11 years ago.

More than 90 percent of lupus sufferers are women, primarily between the ages of 15 and 44, officials said. Also, a 2013 study conducted in Atlanta by the online publication, “Arthritis and Rheumatism,” showed substantial racial disparities when it comes to lupus.

“Black women had very high rates of lupus, with an incidence rate nearly three times higher than that for white women, with significantly high rates in the 30 to 39 age group,” said the study’s principal investigator, S. Sam Lim, an associate professor in the division of Rheumatology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

“These are young women in the prime of their careers, family and fertility. This means a severely compromised future with a disease that waxes and wanes, affecting every aspect of daily living for the rest of their lives,” Lim said.

“The fact that you have different kinds of lupus and you have different symptoms makes the disease even more challenging. Those with the disease can easily be misdiagnosed or go undiagnosed,” said Carr, 41.

While SLE counts as the most serious, other forms of the disease include discoid lupus which primarily affects the skin and causes facial rashes and lesions, a third form known as drug-induced lupus that’s caused by a number of prescription medications.

In drug-induced lupus, the disease goes away once a patient identifies and stops using the medication which caused it.

Procainamide, which doctors prescribe for heart problems; the high-blood pressure medicine Hydralazine and Dilantin, used for seizures, represent the most common drugs that can cause drug-induced lupus, officials said.

Today, a college education has become a necessity in an ever increasing information-based society. However, students from working-class families often find it difficult to navigate the complex application process and secure scholarships that make college a possibility.

Some students, like Cecelia Lopez, beat the odds and become the first in their families to get a bachelor’s degree. Since graduating from California State University, Bakersfield in 2013, Lopez, the daughter of Mexican migrant workers, has toured the country to share her story of triumph.

“If you’re the first in your family to go to college, you can change your family’s life and especially that of your siblings,” said Lopez, 22. “School work compounded with athletics and family problems made applying to colleges very difficult. My track scholarship gave me housing so my brothers lived with me [while I was in college],” said Lopez who lives in Bakersfield, California.

Last week, more than 300 high school students, parents and educators from across the D.C. metropolitan area heard Lopez’s story and that of three other young adults during a screening of the award-winning documentary First Generation. The film followed the four students as they filled out applications, searched for scholarships, and struggled to explain their dreams of college to their parents.

to provide information about scholarships and help them understand their funding options,” said Esparza, 35.

A study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist David Autor found that disparities in college enrollment and completion have increased the wealth gap in the United States. His report, titled “Skills, education, and the rise of earnings inequality among the ‘other 99 percent,’” showed that households with degree holders see a $28,000 increase in their annual earnings. Education advocates have long argued that breaking the cycle of poverty means addressing rising tuition costs and the shortage of guidance counselors in inner-city high schools that often discourage first-generation college bound students from applying in the first place.

During the panel discussion, Henderson touched on District schools’ efforts to start the conversation about college when students reach middle school.

“One of the things we did was start being aspirational about college,” said Henderson, 43. “We started a technology program in the middle school grades. We help students map out the road to college. When they walk into school, they will see their [projected] college graduation year on the wall.”

School in Southeast, said she could identify with the students featured in the documentary. Even as college acceptance letters rolled in, her family’s financial situation influenced Jamia’s decision to attend Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C. in the fall.

“I wanted to go to Winston-Salem State University but didn’t receive that much financial aid,” said Jamia, 17.

“My guidance counselors were helpful but there was only so much they could do. No matter what happens, my three-year-old sister is my biggest inspiration through all of this. I’ll be the first one she sees go to college,” said Jamia who lives in Southeast.

Fenderson and his wife Jaye, a former senior admissions counselor at Columbia University in New York, started filming and producing First Generation in 2007. The 95-minute film, which premiered at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis in 2011, also includes commentary from leading education experts and advocates.

“We want high school students to see that college is attainable no matter your income level or background,” said Adam Fenderson, 32. “People who watch this film will see the faces behind the numbers and realize that this is much more than an economic and social issue,” said Fenderson who lives in Santa Monica, California. Competition Hones Skills in Math, Science

As part of the national Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) competition, hundreds of innovative-minded students recently gathered on the campus of Friendship Blow Pierce Junior Academy in Northeast to determine which of

their peer teams created the fastest and most well-constructed solar-powered vehicles in the District, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) region.

Numerous teams of 4th to 8th graders, who represented schools from across the DMV, gathered on May 20 at the Academy which is home to an award-winning robotics team.

The JSS competition, an education initiative that’s been funded since 2001 by the Army Educational Outreach Program, allows middle school students to hone their knowledge in math and science through creative thinking, experimentation and teamwork in the design and building of projects such as their high-performance solar electric vehicles.

Participation in the annual event also enables students to develop problem-solving abilities, investigate environmental issues and gain hands-on engineering skills to produce the fastest, most interesting and best crafted vehicle possible.

Students Learn Lesson of Compassion

By D. Kevin McNeir WI Contributing Writer Wonderful memories can be forged during a student’s four years in high school, from a first crush and sporting events to proms and graduation.

But based on the experiences of one group of scholars, their greatest recollections may well

be what they did for those in need.

That’s why the destination for 32 students from Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School in Southeast will be New Orleans, Louisiana when they depart on June 14 for a weeklong community project. They’ll be accompanied by several of their teachers, including Jennifer Sonkin, an art

instructor who came up with the idea seven years ago.

“After seeing the devastation that occurred because of Hurricane Katrina, I kept wondering what was being done for the children and families in New Orleans,” said Sonkin, 39, who has been teaching at the school for the past nine years.

did plenty of research and came up with the New Orleans and Back Program. We raise funds all year by making and selling art projects and then take a group of students to the city where we work on damaged homes and schools,” she said on May 24.

At least 1,833 people died in the August 2005 upheaval which stands as one of the five deadliest and costliest natural disasters in US history.

In the program’s inaugural year, 12 anxious students boarded a bus bound for “The Big Easy.” Today the outreach initiative boasts a record 51 youth.

But not everyone gets to make the trip. Students must prove their mettle for the coveted seats.

“The kids don’t have to be straight-A students but they have to be willing to commit their time and energy for the entire year,” Sonkin said. “Each student must be interviewed by a committee that considers the applicant’s attendance and behavior records, how they’re doing in their classes and how well they work with others.”

Eighteen-year-old Eliahs Lucumi said he got involved three years ago because he didn’t think America was doing enough to help rebuild the ravaged city.

“I felt like the government let the people of New Orleans down as if they didn’t matter,” said Eliahs, a resident of Northwest who will attend North Carolina A&T State University in the fall.

“We help to repair homes and schools and it feels good to help others. To see the awful conditions of some parts of the city is mind blowing. Listening to people tell their stories about how they managed to survive reminds me of how blessed we are. I’d like to find a way to help those in need when I’m done with college.”

Another senior and third-year program participant, Luis Sanchez, said tourists only see the sanitized portions of the city.

“We get to see parts of the city that have been rebuilt and then we go to those sections like the Lower Ninth Ward where the real work begins,” said Luis, 17.

“We have to paint, scrape mold off walls and cut grass.

You have to be willing to get dirty and there’s a lot of work that needs to be done. Until you see it for yourself, you can’t imagine the terrible conditions that still remain.”

CHAVEZ continued from Page 22 Students learn how to build functional pieces of art including tables, chairs, and coat hooks. With an ecological bent, they even use old drawers, cigar boxes and other recycled items, converting them into conversation pieces for the home or office.

Last Saturday marked their last day of selling their wares at Eastern Market in Southeast but students still have a few more weeks to secure donations before they leave for New Orleans.

The brightly-colored art work caused one shopper to spend a few extra dollars and help the young people reach their goal.

Each student must raise $300 to defray the cost of the trip.

“My daughter moved to New Orleans four years ago and participates in many community outreach projects through her job,” said Cheryl Morton, a Clinton, Maryland resident.

“These children have created some beautiful work – things that I will be proud to show to my friends. But even more, I felt compelled to help these young people because they’re doing something positive. It warms my heart and shows that we do have youth that are doing good things for their community and others,” said Morton, 58.

The Chavez students said that what they’re doing does matter.

“Some of the homes still have an ‘X’ on the door which means someone died there,” said Maria Hill, a junior who will me making her second pilgrimage to New Orleans.

“Can you imagine living in a house that’s built on top of stilts?

Can you believe that a lot of the kids attend schools that are in trailers? What really matters to me and to my schoolmates is doing something that makes others happy,” said Maria, 18. WI

EDUCATION Scholar of the Week Rachel Toler, a graduating senior at Surrattsville High School in Clinton, Maryland, takes home bragging rights since she’s being honored as Scholar of the Week.

Rachel, who has a 3.96 grade point average and holds a Certificate of Merit for her academic achievements, excels in English and literature, history, calculus and geometry.

Her participation in extracurricular activities includes membership in the National Honor Society, Student Leaders Club and her school’s marching band.

Rachel has volunteered by assisting disabled students during “Challenge Day” and pep rally and music events at Surrattsville High.

In addition, Rachel who won the “Write a Book” competition at Surrattsville, enjoys writing short stories and playing drums in the teen band, “The Great Mistakes.”

Wirt Students Bring Home the Gold Members of the William Wirt Middle School Communication, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (C-STEM) Challenge Team went for the gold – and returned with it after traveling recently to Houston, Texas, to compete in the 9th annual C-STEM Challenge and iSTEM Olympiad at the George R. In Search of the Missing It’s almost impossible to capture in words the emptiness, fear and sense of loss that tears at the parents, caregivers or family member of someone who just disappears.

The numbing questions, the worry, wondering if that person is safe or alive never goes away. Every day brings a new day where loved ones of the missing wait in the hope that they’ll hear word of their whereabouts. In most cases, that closure never comes.

All too often though, black families are left to suffer without the type of exposure afforded to other families. Very rarely are nonwhite children or adults given the type of full-scale media coverage that might be critical to their safe return.

That’s where the Black and Missing Foundation comes in.

On May 24, the organization held its 2nd annual “Hope Without Boundaries” 5K Run/Walk to highlight the issue of black and brown men, women and children who have disappeared. Last Saturday, about 700 people took part in the event at National Harbor in Prince George’s County.

In 2012, more than 265,000 minorities were reported missing in the US. Co-founder Natalie Wilson said the foundation is committed to keeping the issue on the forefront of people’s minds.

“If someone who disappeared isn’t blonde or blue-eyed, their case doesn’t get the media coverage it deserves. And often, law enforcement classifies black children who’re missing as runaways so there’s no Amber Alert,” she said last year. “Also, the makeup of the media affects coverage. There needs to be more people of color in the newsroom. At the Black and Missing Foundation, we believe that every missing person, regardless of age, race, mental ability or circumstance, deserves awareness.”

The reasons for the disappearances vary: the person may have been kidnapped, murdered, suffering from mental or emotional issues or become a victim of a domestic dispute or snatched and thrust into the sex or labor traffic trades.

This issue is no respecter of persons. The missing are all skin colors, genders, ages and economic backgrounds and about 2,300 people in this country are reported missing daily, with just a small amount listed as kidnapped or abducted by a stranger. Over the past 25 years the number of cases has exploded from 150,000 to in excess of 900,000. Most are adults. A little more than half of the missing is, men, 40 percent are white, 30 percent are black and two of 10 are Latino.

Statistics indicate that the number of people with psychiatric problems, drug addictions, and seniors suffering from dementia are a significant part of the missing. And about half of missing young people are runaways with 25 percent of them taken by family members in custody and domestic disagreements. According to the Justice Department, two-thirds of young victims are age 12 to 17 and 80 percent of them are white females.

In addition, nearly 90 percent of abductors are men and they sexually assault their victims in 50 percent of the cases.

Of the 700,000 to two million people trafficked globally every year, thousands are shipped to and within the US. The FBI says that an estimated 293,000 young people in America are at risk of being trafficked in the underground sex trade.

A recent study conducted by The Urban Institute estimates that the underground sex market in seven of America’s cities produces between $40 million and $300 million every year.

Yet despite these numbers, the sex trafficking trade generally operates in the shadows. The issue of missing black and brown individuals falls in a similar category. People like Wilson, and those who support the effort, want to continue to shed a bright light on missing persons so that they might be found and their families find closure.

Democracy Eludes Public School Systems

What a superbly written article, “Supporters Fight for Public Schools Survival,” May 22-28, written by Barrington Salmon.

As Mr. Salmon points out, the assault against public education where schools in mostly black and Latino communities have been ordered closed under the guise of education reform, speaks to the level of progress made since the Supreme Court’s May 17, 1954 ruling, which struck down segregation and inequity among the nation’s public schools.

The very idea that our own black children in wards 5, 7 and 8, have been the targets of the mandated closings is not only repulsive in this day and age, but highlights the need to more closely examine who’s behind the proliferation of charter schools – which are undermining the purpose of free public education.

While the article implores President Barack Obama, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to “blunt the assault” against our public schools, it will also take the “sick and tired” attitude of parents, educators and community leaders to end this atrocity against innocent The Washington Informer

The continued decimation of their right to a fair chance at a quality, free education is a blatant affront to Brown v. Board, and for this kind of injustice to prevail, only exemplifies the real state of a country where democracy has long been touted the bedrock for all people, regardless of race, color or creed.

Seniors Susceptible to Acts of Mistrust

Thanks for enlightening the senior community in your article, “Seniors Cautioned to Beware of Scams,” published in the May 22nd edition.

It’s sad to hear of all the scams that are being perpetrated these days on our most vulnerable residents. In many instances, they are susceptible to scams, having no loved ones they can trust to help care for them or their financial affairs. This, of course, makes them easy prey for individuals who make a living taking advantage of others. It’s all the more heartbreaking when you hear about adult children stealing from their elderly parents.

Republicans are Veteran Hypocrites on the VA If you let the Republicans tell it, President Obama is directly responsible for the fiasco at the Veterans Administration. But they don’t tell you that fresh off of Memorial Day parade appearances, they are responsible for scuttling legislation that would have expanded benefits for the nation’s 22 million veterans and their families.

A measure backed by Obama would have lengthened the pe-

riod veterans are eligible to receive health care from the VA from five years to 10 years after deployment. The bill also would have allowed the VA to open 27 new health facilities, expand medical and dental care, make more veterans eligible for instate tuition at public universities, repeal the recent cut in costof-living adjustments for new enlistees and extend a program that provides care for veterans with mild to severe brain injuries.

Foreign Wars, submitted a letter saying, “This legislation is the most comprehensive veterans’ legislation to be introduced in decades. Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina, the ranking Republican on the committee, said: “We have veterans dying from long waits for basic, necessary tests like colonoscopies. Veterans waiting for their disability claims to be processed know all

It is tragically ironic that around the same time we are honoring and remembering the dead, we are learning about deficiencies in the Department of Veteran’s Affairs that negatively affects the quality of life for those who were injured during their term of service.

Some say that the lengthy waits may have been a factor in the deaths of as many as 40 veterans. The access problem is compounded by poor recordkeeping at some veteran’s hospitals, making it impossible to verify how many veterans waited for medical attention and the length of their wait.

The controversy has led to

calls for Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki to resign, but it is unclear whether his resignation will serve any but a symbolic purpose if the medical treatment of veterans does not change substantially. In this highly partisan environment, it makes no sense for the White House to offer Shinseki’s head on a platter to satisfy the hyper partisanship of growling Republicans. Veterans, and those who represent them in Congress, come from all parts of the po-

litical spectrum. It ought to be in everyone’s interest to improve access to health care for veterans.

There are other issues regarding fair and compassionate treatment for veterans that must be considered. The recent killings at Fort Hood, Texas suggest that there is insufficient focus on mental health issues for our military, with the rate of Army suicides doubling between 2004 and 2009. Many veterans say that one of their stressors is the inaccu-

racy involved in evaluating their disabilities that have come from their service. Missing limbs, impaired mobility, extreme stress and insomnia are all factors included when a monthly disability check is calculated. Many take issue with the evaluation, and challenge an evaluation may take several months (or years).

Noted sociologist William Julius Wilson has argued “the increasing levels of non-marriage and female-headed households is a manifestation of the high levels of economic dislocation experienced by lower-class Black men in recent decades.”

with high rates of incarceration and premature mortality among Black men; it becomes clearer that there are fewer marriageable black men relative to black women who are able to provide the economic support needed to sustain a family.”

Then you add in the unfortunate increase in homosexuality within the Black community and you have a recipe for disaster.

This is why Black men need more White women like Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham.

Even though they are conser-

vative media personalities, they have done more to promote the well-being of Black males than many of the very women who stridently complain about the lack of “eligible” Black men.

Coulter is a friend and I find her comments regarding the Black community very insightful. Look at what she said two years ago on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” She said, “Groups on the left, from feminists to gay rights groups to those defending immigrants, have commandeered the Black The Washington Informer

She continued, “I think what – the way liberals have treated Blacks like children and many of their policies have been harmful to Blacks, at least they got the beneficiary group right. There is the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow laws. We don’t owe the homeless. We don’t owe feminists. We don’t owe women who are desirous of having abortions, but that’s – or – or gays who want to get married to one another. That’s what civil rights has become for much of the left.”

Stephanopoulos asked, “Immigrant rights are not civil rights?” Coulter responded, “Civil rights are for Blacks … what have we done to immigrants? We owe Black people something … We have a legacy of slavery. Immigrants haven’t even been in this country.”

Our Continuing Conversation on Race Donald Sterling, the disgraced San Diego Clippers owner (thus far), is like the proverbial bad penny: he won’t go away. He’s still trying to whistle the “I’mnot-a-racist” ditty to anyone who’ll listen.

His attempts to obscure the obvious have produced two important results. First, of course, they’ve confirmed the accuracy of our first impressions. Sterling has shown that the racial senti-

ments the world heard first on that now-infamous tape aren’t just the one-time ravings of a bitterly jealous old man. Secondly, the racism and sexism he has so bluntly put on display multiple times now has along with other recent developments, underscored that these forms of bigotry in America, while less powerful than before, are still widespread, and will be for a long time to come.

So, it is important to keep including in our conversation on race Sterling, and the chiseling

Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy – whose racist comments helped puncture the notion that he was some sort of hero of the Old West fighting against unjust federal intrusion – as individual examples of that broader point.

And now, we can add Robert Copeland to that list. Copeland, you’ll recall, is the now-former police commissioner of the small town of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire who was outed after being overheard in a restaurant loudly calling President Obama that long-time favorite slur of

White racists. Subsequently, Copeland bluntly declared in an email to the town’s two other police commissioners that “I believe I did use the N-word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse (sic).

For this, I do not apologize – he meets and exceeds my criteria for such.” He did not explain his “criteria.”

To their credit, residents of the town of 6,300 (of which, according to reports, about 20 are Black; the state’s Black population is about 1 percent) quickly

and angrily demanded at a packed town meeting that the 82-yearold official resign – a demand that was seconded by a large swath of local and state officials, and the town’s most prominent vacationer, Mitt Romney. They represent the Americans of all backgrounds who don’t tolerate the old bigotry, whether it’s expressed publicly or privately.

Some would say of Copeland – as what was said of Sterling and Bundy – that he’s not mere-

Ignoring Black American Veterans The current controversy surrounding the plight of veterans in the United States is an important issue for all families in America who have benefited from the service of millions of men and women who have served in the military. Every Memorial Day, the nation pauses to remember and honor all of those who have served the nation, and who today, continue to serve in the armed services. But the grow-

ing contradictions surrounding the U.S. Veterans Administration (VA) about systematic failures to provide timely and adequate health care for veterans is alarming.

Too often, however, the status and interests of Black American veterans get lost in the national public debate when issues of the VA are raised. Since the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s, the percentage of Black Americans serving in the U.S. armed services peaked at 30 percent.

Today, the percentage is at ap-

proximately 20 percent. Now that so many Black American veterans and other veterans are now returning home from the long and awful wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the VA is now overwhelmed with the increased demands for health care and war-related disabilities.

The Department of Veterans Affairs health care group is the largest health care provider in the U.S., overseeing 1,700 hospitals, nursing homes, multipurpose health clinics, and other medical facilities. The VA is a

massive bureaucracy that has had major dysfunctional problems for decades. Accordingly, the crisis at the VA is not a new one. Yet, with a Black American president of the United States, old problems are viewed with a different level of urgency and priority. The truth is that past U.S. presidents were aware of the VA’s long-term systemic dysfunctions, but they did not correct or remedy the VA’s problems.

Let’s, however, be very clear.

It is President Barack Obama’s

problem now. It is Obama’s responsibility as commander-in-chief to take all necessary leadership and action to quickly resolve this crisis. Some reports have found evidence that allegedly indicates that deaths of veterans have occurred as a result of the administrative failures of the VA. One White House official reported that President Obama was “madder than hell” about the VA scandal. An Obama White House

Indianola, Mississippi: Welcome Home B.B. King INDIANOLA, Miss. – This place is the biggest small country town, of which most Americans probably have never heard.

Indianola is the seat of Sunflower County in the flat, sunny, agricultural region known as The Delta. Indianola is the hometown of the immortal Blues Legend, B.B. King. It also happens to be my hometown, and the hometown of a former New York Times food critic.

But as the county seat, Indianola’s name and location were seared into the national consciousness by the one and only voting rights champion, Fannie Lou Hamer, co-founder in 1963, of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, a voter registration and civil rights movement which changed the face of U.S. politics!

Indianola has three traffic signals in town, all along the main drag – U.S. Highway 82 – which leads 30 miles to the west to sprawling Greenville, a major

trading center on the, “Big Muddy,” the Mississippi River; and 30 miles to the east to Greenwood, “The Cotton Capital of the World.”

But this week, Indianola is transformed by the 34th annual – and final – homecoming of 88-year-old native son, Riley “Blues Boy” King.

Driving north into town on U.S. Highway 49, past Inverness, you can see one. Driving east on Highway 82 past Leland, you can see one. Driving south on route 49 past Fannie Lou Ham-

er’s hometown, Ruleville, there’s another one. And driving west past Itta Bena, there’s one there too. What is it? “It” is a billboard with an iconic photo of B.B. plucking that guitar he named, “Lucille,” with the words: “The Thrill is Here,” a little word play on his mega-hit song “The Thrill is Gone.”

I feel a special connection to B.B. King. After he began his musical “career” singing and playing his guitar at the corner of Church Street and Second Street, he migrated to the leg-

endary Club Ebony (which B.B. now owns), the Jook Joint at Mill Street and Hanna Avenue that became a principal stop in the Deep South for all the major Black entertainers of the 1950s.

At the Club Ebony, B.B. met and married Sue Carroll Hall, the daughter of Club manager Ruby Edwards. By this time I was big enough to walk along Hanna Avenue with my Uncle F.C. Canteberry – my mouth full of Juicy Fruit gum – up to

Just as a coin bears two distinct sides, one news story addressing the same issue can be written from fundamentally different perspectives.

But when it comes to the ethnic media, as a new exhibit illustrates, stories written by minorities and immigrants took on an added burden – the fight for their rights that ultimately shaped the American experience.

With 60 artifacts and a video of ethnic reporters reading text published decades ago in their respective newspapers, the Newseum and the Smithsonian have collaborated on a new exhibition, “One Nation With News For All,” which opened May 16.

Sharon Shahid, lead writer for the exhibit, said it’s a great opportunity to understand how the press was used to combat racism and injustice.

“This new exhibit brings together some of the most important voices from the ethnic media in America,” she said. “For the first time, four of those newspa-

pers, The Freedom’s Journal (Black, 1827), The Cherokee Phoenix (Native American, 1828), El Misisipi (Spanish, 1808) and The Golden Hills (Asian-American, 1854) are all under the same roof.”

Jonathan Thompson, senior manager for the Newseum’s media relations, said the artifacts have a compelling history that requires few words.

“We have the journal of Ida B. Wells, publisher of the Memphis

Free Speech, who risked her life after writing scathing editorials about the inhumane practice of lynching,” Thompson said. “And we have a stepstool that was once used by the Pullman porters – black railroad car attendants who also served as news delivery men and correspondents for The Chicago Defender.

the south and relocate for better opportunities in the north.”

Each week, Newseum staff members will change a wall in the exhibit that features the front pages of ethnic weekly newspapers from across the US. In its debut week, the front pages of both The Washington Informer and The Afro-American took center stage representing two historic black publications from the District and Baltimore, Maryland,

respectively.

Two of the more compelling artifacts in the exhibit, a rusted set of shackles and chains, and a printed notice informing readers about a reward for the return of an escaped slave, convey the raw story of chattel slavery in America.

“The items are predictably intense and were both important in telling the story behind the massive and harsh oppression that blacks suffered,” said Carrie Christoffersen, curator and director of collections for the Newseum. “They bring a visceral understanding to viewers and make it easier to understand why black publications were so important in the eventual triumph over oppression.”

Christoffersen, 43, said the diary of Wells revealed the journalist’s contempt for slavery, particularly the cruel practice of lynching.

Her words describing the lynching of a black woman outside of a Jackson, Mississippi courthouse in 1885 powerfully illustrated her convictions.”

Other artifacts include a Royal manual typewriter used by a Pittsburgh Courier reporter in the newspaper’s crusade to end racism in the 1940s, barbed wire used to imprison Japanese-Americans in a World War II detention camp and a composing stick and lead type used

“We want this to be a dynamic experience and believe that the integration of objects, images and video create a deep holistic encounter. Our hope is that the exhibit will open a whole new body of knowledge for whites and blacks, American citizens and internationals and anyone else. We’re only talking about generations ago in much of the display – that’s not ancient history. I’m a product of the modern era and the fourth generation of Hungarian immigrants, but I knew very little about the contributions of today’s ethnic and minority media until we began to do the research for this exhibit,” said Christoffersen.

Those who toured the exhibit,

including a married couple from Washington State, said they left the Newseum with a greater appreciation of history.

“It’s still difficult to understand how people could put those shackles and chains on other human beings as if they were dogs on a leash. The irony of America’s history is that this country was founded on the principles of freedom yet we denied equality to blacks, to women and many others for hundreds of years,” said Noel Travis, 55.

“In some respects it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about America or the Middle East.

People find it easy to act callously toward those whom they believe to be inferior. My children and my grandchildren may be unaware of the role played by ethnic media but hopefully the worst is behind us.”

His wife, Beth Travis, called the items on display “real gems.”

“I totally support the need to speak about one’s community in the voices of those who have lived that history,” said the 56-year-old grandmother. “I heard about JET ending its long reign of printed editions like many others but the information I learned from this exhibit is something that I know I could never have gotten back home.”

Red-haired Will Robinson, visiting from Los Angeles, tagged along with his friend, a young, black woman from Northwest, a first-time visit to the Newseum for both.

of American history and to realize that these images and artifacts represent a time that was not so long ago,” said Robinson, 22. “We do injustice to all people if we try to ignore what some Americans who were of a different color or religion endured just to gain their freedom and rights.

Looking at the diary of Wells and those shackles was a stunning and moving experience.”

Robinson’s buddy, 21-year-old Vivian Breckenridge, agreed.

“Of course papers like Freedom’s Journal, The North Star and later on The Chicago Defender mattered,” she said. “They gave a voice to a voiceless community and moved like-minded Americans to rally behind their cause for freedom and justice.”

Shahid said the pioneering ethnic newspapers in this country contributed to the American landscape in ways that are finally being acknowledged.

“Many of those early papers helped their people assimilate into American society but they also took the lead in demanding justice,” she said. “What amazes me when I look at those papers, both in the past and today, is the similarity of our stories. Blacks, Irish, Chinese, Italians, Native Americans, even Catholics, have utilized the press to secure their rights and to tell their stories like no one else could.” WI The Washington Informer

Mosley Brings Readers New Protagonist

Move over Easy, Debbie’s Arrived

By Barrington M. Salmon WI Staff Writer@bsalmondc Walter Mosley knew he’d found his calling at age 34 when after working as a computer programmer and holding other jobs, he wrote his first novel.

Forty-three books later, he’s an acclaimed writer and playwright and winner of numerous awards, including a PEN America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, an O. Henry Award, and a Grammy. But after spending an evening with Mosley at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Northwest, Mosley made it clear that he refuses to be corralled into any particular box or category.

“They say I’m a mystery writer, try to act as if that’s all I am.

I don’t care. I write whatever I like – there’s nothing I don’t like writing about,” Mosley told an audience on the evening of May 20 at the Politics & Prose-sponsored event. “If you only write what they want you to write, you’ll end up without a job and be an empty husk.”

Mosley, 62, stopped in the District to promote his latest book, “Debbie Doesn’t Do It Anymore.”

He discussed the genesis of his novel, read the first seven to eight pages, and then took questions from the audience. Later, he signed books for a long line of appreciative fans. Mosley’s irreverence, wit and self-deprecating humor had the crowd in stitches.

“It’s my first time seeing him,” said Mosley fan Camille BobbSemple after the event. “I’ve been a fan from the time I read ‘Devil in a Blue Dress,’ with a black male hero which was uncommon and depicted in such real terms, some prettied up, some not. I love that aspect of his books. This is my first time seeing him. I had to come. I’m really, really thrilled.”

“I didn’t know he was so funny. I’m pleasantly surprised.”

Steve Johnson,* a 49-year-old federal government employee agreed.

“I’ve been reading him since the early ’90s,” he said. “It seems like that kind of hard-boiled thing was being reinvented in the ’90s. It appealed to me. President Bill Clinton mentioned him and I went looking … I love him.

Whoever pointed out that he engages his audience was right on the money. He loves being here.”

Mosley said he’s very appreciative of his followers.

“Is it surprising to see so many fans?” he asked. “I’m always happy about it. I love when people read my books. I always feel like a failure. It’s not a bad thing. There have been times when there are a few people in the audience and other times, there’s many more. It’s really exciting when I see a whole lot of people.”

The new book, written three or four years ago, is one he enjoyed writing, the Brooklyn resident said.

“A long time ago I thought of the title,” said Mosley, perhaps best known for his gritty Easy Rawlins detective series. “Then three to four years ago, I decided to write it. It was hard to get published though. It’s been fun.

Everyone except college professors knows what it means.”

The title represents a twist on the popular porn movie, “Debbie Does Dallas.”

The book traces the experiences of Mosley’s first female protagonist, Debbie Dare, who at the beginning of the novel worked as a porn performer.

Dare, a very popular porn queen, has distinctive physical features.

Readers meet her at a point in her life when she’s at a crossroads and she’ll have to make decisions that turn her life upside down. The course correction begins shortly after she returns to the mansion she shares with her husband to find him dead from electrocution while “auditioning” a new-to-the-business,

Her husband’s death and a subsequent revelation about the poor state of her finances forces Debbie to re-examine her life and the choices she’s made. The book takes place over the course of a week and details the myriad personal and emotional struggles Debbie experiences.

“I’m writing this novel about a woman who doesn’t do it anymore. It was lots of fun to write,” Mosley said with a laugh.

“There are no chapter breaks.

It was the kind of novel when I started that there was a fever.

It was all happening. I wanted to put in chapter breaks but I couldn’t.”

“She wanted to make herself a star. She’s six-foot tall, has jet black skin and platinum hair – behind all that is the crazy notion of identity and our place in the world.”

But being a porn performer comes at a costly price: one’s humanity, said Mosley.

“These are people in a cult who are oppressed by people

who love and despise them,” he said. “This is a woman savaged and ravaged by a system.

It’s like working in a coal mine.

You work for $1 a ton, you get black lung and you die. Nobody cares about them or porn performers.”

Mosley said Debbie’s decision to break her shackles is one every person should be contemplating and moving toward.

“I wrote a political monograph, ‘Folding the Red into the Black,’ about creating a new utopia in the US,” he said. “In America, you’re whole life takes up your whole life. At the end of your life, you’re an empty husk who leaves no footprint. This is a fact. The system is who we work for ... Capitalism is like sugar: very sweet but also poisonous. Rather than having faith in a system, you should take the working parts.” “ … People have a burgeoning awareness that capitalism is the enemy. Seniors Complete Program, Win Scholarships

Justice Sonia Sotomayor Attends College Bound Ceremony

By Sam P.K. Collins WI Contributing Writer @ sampkcollins A local nonprofit handed out thousands of dollars in scholarships to a group of students during a ceremony at a prestigious theatrical venue last week.

College Bound, Inc. recognized 36 high school seniors from across the D.C. metropolitan area for completing its academic mentoring program during its 23rd annual End-of-the-Year Celebration. All of the students, many of whom participated in the program for more than three years, plan to attend an accredited college or university in the fall.

“It does not matter where you come from or what you’ve been through. You can be great,” said Kenneth A. Ward, executive director of College Bound, Inc. since 2009, during his keynote address at the May 21 event.

“We all have struggles but I encourage you not to lose your way.

The challenges you face will make you stronger. Education has everything to do with freedom. It wasn’t that long ago that our ancestors could not go to school.

Have faith in yourself. Believe in your dreams even when common sense tells you not to,” said Ward.

A 2013 report by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education honed in on racial and socioeconomic disparities in D.C. high school graduation rates.

More than 80 percent of white students in the District graduated on time compared to 53 percent of black students. Young women enrolled in District high schools also graduated at a rate 20 percent higher than that of their male counterparts.

More than 500 parents, College Bound partners, educators, and community members watched video testimonials of College Bound students and an alumna.

They later cheered on honorees as they received a total of $135,000 in scholarships. Throughout the two-hour program at Arena Stage in Southwest, a group of students provided up-to-the-minute Twitter and Facebook updates from a live room.

Beatrice Smoot, a College Bound alumna and viola player, serenaded the audience alongside her sister Jessica who played the violin. Smoot, who recently finished her freshman year at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, said that she appreciated College Bound’s continuous support.

“College Bound has scholarships that you can apply for even after you graduate from high school,” said Beatrice Smoot, 19.

“It was very hands on. I always got my homework done and prepared for the SAT and ACT at the weekly meetings. We also went on college tours for low prices,” said Beatrice Smoot who lives in Southeast.

The celebration provided Johnette Anderson, a health care provider who volunteered with College Bound between 2002 and 2005, an opportunity to reminisce about her experiences as a partner.

“College Bound saves lives,” said Anderson, 63. “A mind is definitely a terrible thing to waste. That’s why I support this program with my time and my money. More people have to volunteer. They’ll like it. When I got involved, I realized that I couldn’t afford not to do more,” said Anderson who lives in Adelphi, Maryland.

You’ve made new friends, first of all.

You’ve learned new things, both in class and out. Maybe you’ve grown a couple inches, found a new talent, dreamed big, or mastered something challenging.

A lot can happen in a year, especially when everything else changes, too. In the book “Sugar” by Jewell Parker Rhodes, it happens even faster with history behind it to push.

More than anything, Sugar hated sugar.

It bit her face and fingers at harvest time, and made them bleed. Cutting left blisters on her hands. Sugar cane got in her hair and there was no escaping the smell of it.

When Missus Beale made a meal with sugar, it turned Sugar’s stomach.

Sugar was sure there had to be a reason why Ma named her after that crop but there was no way of knowing, since Ma had died.

What’s in a name?

For some in the Native American community and at least 50 Democratic senators, the Redskins’ moniker should be banned. It’s racist, they said, and many have even labeled the team’s name as taboo, one they’ve refused to verbalize.

“Washington’s team owner Dan Snyder and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell have claimed that using the ‘R-word’ epithet somehow honors native peoples, but it is quite the opposite,” said Ray Halbritter, the chief executive officer of the Oneida Indian Nation, a federally recognized tribe of Native Americans located in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

“The R-word is a dictionary defined racial slur,” said Halbritter, 62.

Fifty U.S. senators, all Democrats, signed letters on May 22, urging the NFL and Snyder to change the team’s name.

The senators noted in their letter that organizations that represent more than 2 million Native Americans around the country have said they want the team’s name changed.

Reportedly, no Republican senators received an invitation to sign the letters, where Democrats compared the use of the name to the racist comments made last month by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

“Today, we urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did, that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports,” said the senators, which included Maryland Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski, Senate Majority Leader Harry The Washington Informer

After Sterling’s controversial remarks, in which he angrily demanded that his mistress not bring blacks to Clipper games, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver fined the owner $2.5 million and banned him for life from the league.

Silver also ordered the Sterling family to sell the team.

“I’m convinced that if each member of this body speaks on this issue and is forceful in their resolve, that we can help initiate change,” said Cantwell, 55.

Cantwell said despite Republicans being excluded from signing the letters, she’s urging everyone to support a name change for the Redskins.

Last year, President Barack Obama also joined a growing number of politicians and others who said the team should consider a name change.

“If I was the owner of the team and I knew that there was a name of my team – even if it had a storied history – that was offending a sizable group of people, I’d think about changing it,” Obama said.

However, team officials and many of its fans remain steadfast in their refusal to change the name.

“I don’t see where the intent is to offend anyone as much as it is to honor,” said Renaldo Carter, a Redskins’ fan who lives in Northeast.

“I’ve read where this debate about the name has been going on for 10 or more years, but really it has not because it’s not really an issue. I think everything today is so politicized and this isn’t any different,” said Carter, 51.

Ted Morgan, an Alexandria, Virginia resident and longtime fan of the team, said he’s appalled that senators

have compared the franchise’s name to that of comments made by Sterling.

“That’s lame to say that keeping the name is the same as Snyder having views like Sterling,” said Morgan, 57. “They should come up with something better than that. Maybe that’s why the Republicans didn’t sign the letters. It’s not right and it’s unfair to Snyder.”

Redskins’ President Bruce Allen indicated that there are no current plans to change the name despite calls to the contrary.

“Our use of Redskins as the name of our football team for more than 80 years has always been respectful of and shown reverence toward the proud legacy and traditions of Native Americans,” said Allen, 57, who noted that research conducted by the team shows that the term “Redskins” originated as a Native American expression of solidarity.

In a letter responding to the senators, Allen said the team’s logo had been designed by Native American leaders and he cited surveys that show Native Americans as a whole support the use of the name.

Also, a poll taken earlier this year by editors at the Associated Press revealed that 83 percent of Americans favored keeping the Redskins’ name.

Additionally, NFL officials appear to be standing behind Snyder and the team.

“The intent of the team’s name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image,” said Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesman.

“The name is not used by the team or the NFL in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently,” McCarthy said.WI

Do we take the time to think about what we’re thinking as a pattern, or do we allow our minds to wander? We must control our thinking! Thinking is when the Lord molds us like clay, if we listen and do what He is telling us.

For me, 30 years ago, discipline meant working on my business daily; it was effective job search techniques and strategies. Research, visits to resume writing services to see what they offered was a must. In fact, I contacted prominent companies, and went in as a client to see what they offered.

Got exactly what I needed; a book on effective job search techniques and strategies; was informed of what they offered to clients and the type of resume writing services they offered. It worked out just fine for me.

What if I had not exercised discipline or self-control, determined to find out all I needed to know about my competitors? We opened offering similar services for a lot less. Without knowledge of my competitors, we would not have made it very far!

We had lots of repeat customers who often said, “Every time you write me a resume, I get the job!” We also trained our clients during mock interviews, causing them to think about obvious questions well in advance of the interview.

The Holy Spirit, not someone else, can advise you on what moves to make unless they are role models, with a proven track record in specific areas. It takes self-control and discipline to remain steadfast.

Family and friends often get in our business to tell us what moves to make next in our lives.

Plans for your life must not come from someone unplanned. Their experiences don’t compare, they will see life from a different point of view.

About one-quarter of recent veterans reported service-connected disabilities in 2011, which can impact their ability to provide for their families: households with a veteran with a disability that prevents them from working are about twice as likely to lack access to adequate food than households without a disabled member.”

Veterans should not have to fight for this kind of assistance. Haven’t they fought enough?

Regardless of whether we agree with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, we often thank our military for their service. Thanking a homeless veteran, or one who has waited more than 30 days for medical attention is lip service if the “thank you” is not accompanied by the assistance that so many veterans need. Memorial Day ought to be a day to commemorate the dead, and improve the way we treat the living.WI

So, let me make sure I understand.

Black women complain about the state of “eligible” Black males to date and marry, yet they support the policies of a president who is going to make the problem much worse.

Under Obama, Blacks have regressed on every economic, social and moral indicator that is tracked.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the current Black unemployment rate is 11.6 percent; for Blacks aged 16-19 it is at 36.8

percent.

However, the average Black unemployment rate during the terms of the last three presidents, as well as the average over the past 30 years, are noteworthy. Under Clinton, it was 10 percent; under George W. Bush, 9.3 percent but under Obama, 14 percent for the total time he has been in office. The 30-year average for Blacks is 12.4 percent.

Campaign slogans notwithstanding, this isn’t the kind of change we have been waiting for.

Historically, Black women have been notoriously protective of their men and children. It is ironic that Coulter and Ingraham, two conservative White women, are now assuming that role. We Black men need more White women like Coulter and Ingraham, not Black women who will give a pass to a failing Black president.WI

I believe that all veterans should be treated with equal respect. All veterans should receive all the benefits they are entitled, including good health care without bureaucratic red tape and prolonged waiting lists.

We are all aware that before and after the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the problem of racism and racial discrimination in the delivery of quality health care remains a serious problem. While 10 million or more people have health care as a result ofACA, there are still millions of Black Americans and Latino Americans who do

Their reaction, as I’ve said, demonstrated anew that confronting individual expressions of bigotry is important in helping illuminate how entrenched anti-Black racism, and bigotry of all kinds remain in the American system as a whole.

After all, the American system and its institutions are, overwhelmingly, run and heavily influenced by White men; by White billionaires and millionaires, like Donald Sterling, who control vast economic empires and move in the most sophisticated and elite of circles. By White police chiefs, and fire chiefs, school superintendents, politicians, and so on, who, like Robert Copeland, hold responsible positions in their communities and thus help operate the country’s governmental and civic infrastructure. And by individual owners of all kinds of businesses, like Cliven Bundy, who are always

praised as constituting the backbone of the country.

Remember that – and then consider the racial malice in each of these men’s remarks. Cliven Bundy, on a drive-by past a Las Vegas federally subsidized housing project, sees “enough” of some Black residents there to declare all Black people worthless. Donald Sterling’s perverse jealousy of Magic Johnson, who has excelled as an athlete, a businessman and a philanthropist, propels him to charge that Black Americans don’t help one another. And, finally, according to Robert Copeland’s “criteria” Barack Obama, a former United States senator and the twice-elected president of the United States, is just a n—–.WI Lee A. Black American veterans are facing a double whammy. They are confronted with the inadequacies of the VA as well as the racism in society that makes it more difficult to get quality health care in traditional public and private health care systems. And for Black female vets, there’s a triple whammy. This is why it is urgent to call urgent attention to the struggles and challenges that confront Black veterans.

When I was a member of the Wilmington Ten in North Carolina in the 1970s, I saw firsthand the disproportionately high percentage of Black American Vietnam veterans who were imprisoned for long periods of unjust incarceration. Even though many of those veterans had served with valor and honor in that tragic war in Southeast Asia, too many went to prison because of inadequate health

care and unemployment and war-related problems.

In 2014, many returning Black American veterans are also ending up in jails and prisons. Many return to trouble with the law while seeing the persistent absence of good health care and the lack of productive employment opportunities. It is so important, therefore, that we should not forget the needs and aspirations of all our veterans. In particular, Black American veterans should be remembered and supported not just on Memorial Day, but on every day. We thank God for their service and sacrifice. Let’s show our vets our continuous salute, respect and support.WI

So the Club Ebony and B.B. King are virtually in my DNA, that is, my grandmother’s house was one block from the Club, and whenever I heard B.B. King’s name mentioned with songs on the Hit Parade, I always thought of him as a neighbor.

I was here in 2008 when B.B. opened the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center.

And I’ve come for his homecomings ever since. Sometimes at the time of his birthday in mid-September, once around the time of the July 4 holiday, now this year for the Memorial Day weekend.

We know this is the final homecoming, because he has said it’s to be his last homecoming celebration here in Indianola, and also, very importantly because his performance skills have deteriorated considerably.

His band is still as tight as Dick Tracy’s hatband, but, sometimes the star forgets, or does not complete the lyrics to his songs, so he’s not coming back to the Delta to celebrate again.

So, bye, bye B.B. We love you. We love your music. Enjoy your retirement, my hometown neighbor.WI
