Popular Nigerian Televangelist T.B. Joshua Has Died

Temitope Balogun Joshua, one of Africa’s most popular televangelists who was known as T.B. Joshua, has died at the age of 57. The Nigerian-born pastor was founder of the mega church Synagogue Church Of All Nations, or SCOAN, which also runs the Emmanuel Television Station in Lagos, Nigeria. The church announced his death in a statement Sunday, June 6. No cause of death was given. “God has taken His servant Prophet T.B Joshua home — as it should be by divine will,” the church said, adding that “his last moments on earth were spent in the service of God. This is what he was born for, lived for and died for.” T.B. Joshua was noted for making predictions and for his claims to cure various ailments and to make people prosper through miracles. He was, however, controversial, with critics questioning his claims and saying he profited off of people seeking hope.

More than 15,000 people from Nigeria and abroad attend SCOAN’s Sunday services.

Many African presidents, senior government officials, international soccer players, musicians and other high-profile guests have worshipped in the church. He was popular in many African countries, and in South America where he had held many religious crusades.

In September 2014, the guest house of the church collapsed, killing more than 100 people, most of them foreigners who were in Nigeria to attend his services.

While authorities say the building collapsed because of structural defects, T.B. Joshua insisted the building was blown up by a small plane that he claimed flew over it shortly before it came down. WI

Barbados Welcomes First Cruise Passengers in More Than a Year

Barbados welcomed the first cruise passengers in more than a year when the Celebrity Millennium ship arrived at the Bridgetown Port on Monday, June 7. All passengers and crew members were fully vaccinated. And according to Minister of Tourism Senator Lisa Cummins, during a COVID-19 Update press conference on June 5, visitors coming to the island via the air and seaports must have a negative PCR test three days prior to arrival. “There is testing that is going to be taking place on board the ships that will make sure that people are continually kept safe … Then when they [visitors] land in Barbados via the airport, they are going to be taken via a sterile corridor to the port where they then have to be subjected to further screening in order to embark on the ship, which is homeported here in Barbados. But what’s most important is that so far, what we have begun is vaccinated only cruises. So 100 per cent of the persons on these ships will be vaccinated,” she said.

Furthermore, Minister Cummins said the government has also taken the decision to restrict what types of activities visitors coming to the island on cruise ships can participate at this stage. WI

June 2021 Message from Department of Aging and Community Living

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

By Laura Newland, Director D.C. Department of Aging and Community Living

Are you feeling that change in the air? The days are warmer and longer, and this year, vaccinations mean that spring brought us more than just a change in the temperature! Getting vaccinated means that we can hug loved ones, feel comfortable in public spaces, and resume at least some of our “normal” routines, which includes DACL in-person activities.

The past fourteen months have only confirmed what we already knew—loneliness and isolation cause negative health, social, and emotional outcomes for all of us but can be particularly damaging for seniors. But even with the easing of social distancing requirements, many of us remain alone.

That’s why DACL is working hard to ensure that every senior who wants to resume in person activities can do so safely, from working out to chilling out over coffee. Some of our programs, like Adult Protective Services and Safe at Home, have continued to operate during the public health emergency, and over the past several months, our adult day health programs opened in-person activities to help support our caregivers providing care to those with Alzheimer’s or other related dementias. In June, our Senior Wellness Centers, Vida Senior Center, and the Asian Pacific Islander Senior Center will all reopen. Now, things might look different when we reopen—we’ll have to limit participation in some activities, and we’re requiring masks and social distancing for now, but we’re all so excited to welcome you back in-person!

June is also PRIDE month, so we’re planning exciting PRIDE month activities with a focus on creating safer and more welcoming spaces for our LGBTQ+ seniors. I know that the public health emergency isn’t the only reason seniors may feel isolated and as we open back up, I want to ask each of you to help me make sure every senior feels welcome in all our spaces. Introduce yourself to someone new or maybe have a conversation with someone you’ve seen around but haven’t talked to before. Everyone, no matter what we look like, how we identify, who we love, wants to feel welcome and included. As we think about how we can build back better than before, let’s commit to being better to each other!

If you’ve discovered you prefer to work out at home with online classes, or if you’re not quite ready to participate in person, we’ve still got you covered. The silver lining from this past year has been seeing how popular virtual programming has been, and we’ll continue to offer a great selection of online classes and activities. And remember, the sooner we all get vaccinated, the sooner we can all be together!
