Former NAACP president Ben Jealous touted his experience as a community organizer while standing on a progressive agenda that included plans to implement health care for all Marylanders, end mass incarceration and provide access, tuition free, to the state’s community colleges. And his strategy apparently worked on Tuesday, June 28 as Jealous secured the Democratic nomination for Maryland governor and the opportunity to run

Civil Rights Groups Blast Trump’s Immigration Policy By Stacy M. Brown WI Senior Writer Despite President Donald Trump signing executive orders to reverse his immigration policy that separated children from their parents and families, activists have continued to organize a nationwide effort for a protest to highlight the separation of relatives caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. A rally is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30 in Lafayette Square in D.C, across the street from the White House. Sister marches reportedly are expected in other cities across the country to protest the White House’s immigration policies.

Civil rights leaders, lawmakers and citizens’ groups have blasted the president for the policy that’s been compared with the practice of slave owners separating parent and child. And even with the executive order, most remain skeptical as video, audio and other reports continue to pour in that show crying children and horrified parents in immigration detention centers. “The separation of children from their parents at the border is not only cruel and inhumane but is evidence of a morally bankrupt administration,” said Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League. “Amer-

Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination in 1968 and racial tension among key organizers prevented what had been envisioned as a long-term, multi-ethnic mass movement against government-induced poverty and mass militarism — both of which had, along with racism, marginalized multitudes of people while placing power in the hands of a select few. Decades later, amid calls for unity against the very forces that have disenfranchised poor people, broken apart families and decimated communities, a coalition numbering in the tens of thousands made a bold moral appeal and demanded that U.S. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle take direct action against economic inequality, police brutality, voting disenfranchisement and other issues of social and economic importance. “You’re the foundation and the people we invited.” The Rev.
