Liberia Declared Ebola-Free But Guinea and Sierra Leone Remain Locked in Disease’s Grip By Barrington M. Salmon WI Staff Writer @bsalmondc For more than a year, the Ebola virus has savaged the West African countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Since December 2013, the disease has infected more than 27,000 people, primarily in these countries,

killing more than 11,000. Earlier this year, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone, Guinea’s President, Alpha Condé, declared that they planned to isolate all known Ebola cases in their respective countries and completely eradicate the hemorrhagic virus by

mid-April. At a Feb. 20 joint news conference held in New York after the trio’s announcement, Dr. Bruce Aylward expressed doubt. “The plan was to get to zero in 60 days. It’s biologically plausible but theoretically not likely,” said Aylward, special representative of the World Health Or-

ganization, director-general for the Ebola response and assistant director-general for emergencies. “People suspected of being infected don’t want to be identified as having Ebola or to be included on contact lists. They go through extraordinary measures to not get on a contact list because of the stigma.”
