Dorothy Rowley WI Staff Writer I particularly liked “Alternative School Reduces Truancy,” which was published in the Feb. 21edition. The article was about strides Azalia Speight, principal at Luke C. Moore (LCM) High School, and her faculty have made reducing truancy and increasing academic performance at the alternative learning facility in Northeast.The school enrolls about 300 students who’ve been at risk of quitting – or have dropped out of their traditional high schools, but are taking advantage of a second chance to earn a diploma. Since Speight’s arrival at the school in 2009, average daily attendance has increased from 32 percent to nearly 80 percent. I believe the work being accomplished at LCM

Barrington Salmon WI Staff Writer I first heard of Nelson Mandela as a teenager in Jamaica. The anti-apartheid leader was jailed when I was seven years old, but his picture, though banned in South Africa, was everywhere in Jamaica in books, on T-shirts, buttons, caps and banners. We saw pictures of the massacres in Soweto and Sharpsville, read about the murders of Stephen Biko, Chris Hani and thousands of unnamed black South Africans who were not afraid to die for their freedom. Mandela was one of my heroes, so when he died on Dec. 6, I was honored to have the opportunity to cover different elements of his passing, and most of all, to share his textured life and legacy with Washington Informer readers. I can think of no more appropriate way to honor Madiba. Collins WI Staff Writer One article that has greatly impacted me this year highlighted Capital Cause, a local nonprofit that raises money for causes through crowd funding, a relatively new fundraising technique (“Young Philanthropists Connect with Industry Leaders” July 24 edition). Crowd funding allows those with low and mid-level incomes to collectively affect change in their communities. Seeing my fellow Millennials use their networks to execute countless philanthropic endeavors has given me confidence that my generation can reverse the negative trends in inner-city communities. It takes a village and Capital Cause truly personifies that mantra. I look forward to highlighting more organizations like Capital Cause in 2014 and raising awareness about the social ills Washingtonians continue to face.

The first, “Private Prisons Equal Big Business,” published May 22, had an impact because, as a journalist, it’s gratifying to be able to get to the bottom of what is really a sad truth. More and more people – especially Black men – are losing their freedom in a system that pads the pockets of rich, big business people. The second, “Blacks Battle Mental Health Stigma,” published July 24, because it represents another sad truth that has come to light. Mental health illnesses are more common than many people might think or admit. Blacks, in particular, are reluctant to admit such issues or to seek professional help.

Leggett Celebrates Pedestrian Safety Improvements in Wheaton Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett today celebrated the completion of pedestrian safety improvements on Reedie Drive between Veirs Mill Road and Georgia Avenue in Wheaton that were installed by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). The 800-foot stretch of road was targeted because it was designated as one of the county’s “High Incidence Areas” (HIAs) – locations having the highest concentration of pedestrian collisions. Between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2012, there were 20 pedestrian collisions including one fatality in the Reedie Drive HIA. wi

Housing Department Makes Major Move After years of negotiations Prince George’s County became the headquarters of a state agency – its first. The Board of Public Works has approved a lease in New Carrollton for the new headquarters of the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). This means that DHCD will be moving into a new mixed-use project which will include 500 residential units and 65,000-square-feet of retail in phase one. When fully built out through phase two, the project will incorporate up to 2,400 residential dwelling units, 100,000-square-feet of retail and a 300-room hotel.

Death Penalty Repealed in Maryland After a protracted fight, one signature proved to be the final action that repealed the death penalty in Maryland. Gov. Martin O’Malley signed the law repealing the death penalty on May 2 before a packed house. O’Malley said the state has “a moral responsibility to stop doing the things that are wasteful, and that are expensive, and that do not work. Therefore, we are signing into law today a repeal [of] the death penalty in Maryland.”

In 2013, the majority of stories focused on President Barack Obama and Tea Party leaders’ inability to reach a budget agreement. The battle caused the first government shutdown in decades and distrust for elected officials among their constituents. The 16-day shutdown caused more than 800,000 federal employees to be furloughed. Other issues The Informer covered included attempts by the GOP to dismantle the Affordable Care Act also known as “Obamacare” through funding limitations; the steady increase of middle class to impoverished families; the acquittal of murder suspect George Zimmerman in the death of 17-year-old Travyon Martin; celebrity chef Paula Deen’s racial discrimination and sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a former employee; and the Boston Marathon bombing that left three dead and 264 injured. The Informer covered the anniversary celebrations of both the March on Washington’s 50th anniversary and the centennial of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Finally, the Informer introduced the Road to Brown investigative series to highlight major developments in education and school desegregation as the nation prepares for the 50th anniversary of the historic Brown v. Democratic, GOP Squabbling Leads to Government Shutdown The federal government shutdown at midnight Monday, the first time in 17 years. More than 800,000 federal employees were home Tuesday morning and an additional 1.3 million were working without the prospect of getting paid. With the government shuttered, government operations were slowed or stopped. About 3.3 million federal employees were told to stay home; the Meals on Wheels program, the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program were also affected. At the National Institutes for Health (NIH), new patients would not be accepted into clinical research, but current patients continued to receive care. Meanwhile, NIH medical research was expected to be disrupted and some studies were to be delayed. And furloughed federal workers feared they wouldn’t get paid, unlike shutdowns in the past when Congress voted to pay furloughed workers retroactively. The U.S. military, police departments, the Border Patrol

Evers Remembered at Arlington National Cemetery A former U.S. president, the attorney general of the United States, a governor of Mississippi, members of the U.S. Congress and scores of guests honored the life and work of the late civil rights leader Medgar Evers at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., on June 5 at a wreath-laying ceremony sponsored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Deltas Converge on Nation’s Capital More than 40,000 members of Delta Sigma Theta, the largest African-American Greek-lettered sorority in the world, are expected to arrive in the District on Thursday, July 11, to help kick-off an eight-day convention celebrating the organization’s 100th anniversary. Fed Up With Schools, Chicago Kids Boycott State Tests A group of Chicago students protesting the city’s planned school closings and what they see as over-reliance on standardized testing boycotted the Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE) and demonstrated outside a school board meeting in May. “Today we are boycotting the second day of PSAE to show that standardized testing should not decide the future of our schools and students,” one girl said at the protest. Private Prisons Equal Big Business Officials at various civil rights and watchdog organizations claim
that private prison operators are using their political clout to help increase the prison population and to deny the release of many who are eligible for parole. CBC Livid over Passage of Farm Bill Calling it irresponsible and short-sighted, members of the Congressional Black Caucus reacted strongly to Congress’ passage of the controversial Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act, also known as the farm bill. By a 216-208 majority party-line vote, House Republicans pushed through a revised farm bill that excludes nutrition programs, such as food stamps, which has helped to feed more than 47 million individuals and families throughout the country annually. In addition to the major improvements made to District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) under the leadership of Chancellor Kaya Henderson, the District welcomed the continued physical and academic improvements of schools throughout the DCPS system. Schools Budget Hearing Hits on Key Issues At-Large D.C. Council member David Catania made the point during a May schools budget hearing that he wants to ensure that the proposed spending plans for city and charter schools are in compliance with Mayor Vincent C. Grays’s Fiscal Year 2014 expenditures. Catania, chair of the council’s Education Committee said there’s a lack of clarity between the two school systems’ spending allocations that needs to be dealt with prior to the mayor’s budget being approved later this month. BSU Professors Guide Students in Astrobiology Two Bowie State University (BSU) professors, Alan Anderson and Anne Osano, helped increase minority participation in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professions by sharing with their students, research they conducted as fellows in a National Aeronautics and Space Administration program on astrobiology. Diversity Lacking in Inner-City Schools Sixty years after the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown vs. Board of Education – the unprecedented civil rights case that dramatically impacted the quality and character of the nation’s educational system – black students attending public schools in large urban cities lack diversity when it comes to their teachers. The panel of education experts who participated in a recent three-hour town hall meeting at Howard University in Northwest, also noted that inner-city classrooms remain largely segregated, students are being taught by white instructors who have little knowledge of how to reach out to their young charges – and more importantly, due to a shortage of black male teachers as role models, black boys are at risk for dropping out of school. Henderson Delivers ‘Uplifting’ Speech In her October “State of the The Washington Informer
Schools” speech at the newly-refurbished Cardozo Education Campus in Northwest, Kaya Henderson, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) chancellor, expressed the need for unity in moving the city’s public schools system forward. “The schools are on the move and headed in a new direction,” Henderson told the diverse audience of more than 300 people. “With everyone working together, nothing can stop us from achieving [our] goals,” said Henderson, 43. She cited recent DCPS achievements such as increased test scores and enrollment numbers that have been documented since the launch of her progressive “Commitment” plan in 2012. Facebook Executive Challenges HU Students With the professional landscape of the country lacking in the number of women and other minorities in power positions, Sheryl Sandberg, a chief operating officer for social media front-runner Facebook, opted – during an October discussion with an audience of Howard University students – to not sugar-coat her message of racial and
gender inequality in government and private industry. “Men still rule the world and up until a few years ago, white men still ruled the world,” Sandberg said to the audience of bright-eyed, students who filled the university’s School of Business auditorium. Remembering Those We Lost *Legendary Blues Singer Bobby “Blue” Bland, was among the great storytellers of blues and soul music. In songs such as I Pity the Fool, Cry, Cry, Cry and Who Will the Next Fool Be. He created tempestuous arias of love, betrayal and resignation, set against roiling, dramatic orchestrations, and left the listener drained but awed. Bland was 83. *Helen Thomas, legendary White House correspondent passed away peacefully at her Washington D.C. apartment, while surrounded by family and friends. Thomas, a Lebanese American, emerged as one of the most prominent White House reporters, during a time when the profession was dominated by men. Generations of women in the profession have been influenced by her work. Thomas was 92.

Langston has been both a playground and a meeting ground for generations of African-American golfers.
