2020 Was a Defining Year Denise Rolark Barnes WI Publisher I was blessed as a young girl growing up in the nation’s Capital to have parents, although divorced, who shared their wisdom as lessons to help me maneuver my way into adulthood. One edict my father reinforced every time I left his front door could not have been more instructive or defining for me nearly 40 years later.

He would remind me to make sure I always had $1.00 and one quarter tucked away in my pocket or wallet.

(I can imagine many of you nodding your head as you read this.) The dollar was for bus fare and the quarter allowed me to use a payphone. It was my emergency cash, stashed away separately from my spending money and meant only to be used in case of an emergency. As a single woman, the older I got, the more he reminded me (and the more money I needed) while subtly reinforcing what also became his mantra, “If it is to be, it is up to me!”

My dearly beloved father is no longer here, yet 26 years since his death, his words stay with me as if he spoke them just yesterday. And throughout 2020, his wisdom directed me all year long.

2020 has been a heck of a year – one that will shape and redefine how we live our lives forever. We entered 2020 with genuine optimism as most new years do, providing space for us to reflect over the past, give thanks for the present and maintain hope for the future. Yet, the ongoing reality of economic inequality, social injustice, educational inequities, health disparities, and a never-ending political circus kept us distracted, as it always does, and unprepared for the emergency that loomed ahead.

Individuals and corporations alike were ill-prepared for what 2020 would bring. The Washington Informer was already facing threats of economic decline like so many other media companies across the nation.

The advent of digital media transformation essentially meant a migration by advertisers to digital platforms that we had yet to perfect. Ad dollars were drying up and we were not moving fast enough to keep up with the trends.

Still, we had local and national elections to cover – one of the most important in U.S. history – and we needed to ensure that our readers in

our communities were counted in the 2020 Census.

Meanwhile, we witnessed our fellow Americans, and the world, being chased down by an unknown yet deadly virus that would lead to the nation being shutting down within the first three months of the new year.

Like so many, we pondered the impact of this pandemic before being labeled as such. And, in which pocket, I asked myself, did I tuck that dollar and that quarter? Because of COVID-19, there was nowhere to go, so our resources were used for emergency calls and outreach to our advertisers and friends to let them know we were still in business, ready to serve them and willing to do more to help ensure their health and survival. We also issued a call for help because we knew that emergency cash might not last long.

We are grateful to those who came through and helped sustain us while we waited in line for government-supported PPP and EIDL loans. And, we fiercely applied for grants, winning a few that allowed us to keep our team intact.

Media lives for dramatic scenes

and we saw many of them this year.

We covered the demonstrations following the wanton killings of young Black men and women by police and by members of their communities. We covered long lin lafayette@ wibridgedc.com sent you files via WeTransfer es of early voters who ousted President Trump and elected the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American vice president. We covered the bodacious renaming of a portion of 16th Street to Black Lives Matter Plaza by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. And we were there for one of Rep. John Lewis’s final moments as he stood next to the mayor, Wakanda-style, continuing to lead the charge for racial justice. We also covered the rise of millennial thunder by the Don’t Mute D.C. movement facing down gentrification. And we sadly said goodbye to far too many who died this year.

The dramatic scenes that truly impacted us included our coverage of hundreds who stood in long lines for food, paper goods, including toilet paper, and disinfectant germ killers.

We also captured students' mournful faces who could not return to school and the confused visage of each parent trying to deal with distance learning while worrying about losing their jobs and realizing $1.00 and a quarter were not enough. We captured the glaze of more than one overwhelmed nurse and frontline workers who put their lives on the line day after day in efforts to keep the rest of us safe, healthy and alive.

2020 taught us a lot but the biggest lesson was the need to prepare today for the next emergency that will come tomorrow. 2021 will be much better, I hope!

No matter how you slice it, 2020 will go down as a year replete with news that shocked the world and events which few could have predicted. The operative word describing the past year, remains without question, “unprecedented.”

And while some Americans, led by a president prone to denying the advice of experts in order to make room for his own revisionist history, have embraced the more insular, nationalist perspective that guided Donald Trump in his first bid for the presidency, “Make America Great Again,” we have seen the absurdity of such a policy.

While it may have once been feasible to close our borders, to deny immigrants entry to our country and to live as if we were the only people on Earth, those days are long gone. We now live in a global village, interconnected in almost every aspect of life. But we’ve known this for some time, despite the last-ditch efforts of those who long for a return to “the good old days" – one final gasp of air and the indulgences of a society founded on the premise of “white privilege.”

That’s reason enough to celebrate! decisions may be beneficial to the world’s millions of inhabitants and which are best if left alone, if we only take the time to look back at history. Of course, that requires the willingness to accept history without revising it to suit and support our own desires, prejudices or fears.

As an example, the devastation that America and the world have experienced due to COVID-19, may well have been avoided – or at least minimalized – if those in charge had simply considered what happened in 1918 when an influenza virus first emerged that would kill more people than either the Black Plague or HIV/AIDS. But with denial or ignorance of the past we would witness the inevitable – an explosion of infections and deaths in numbers that could have been avoided both in the U.S. and in many other countries. Indeed, history can be instrumental in teaching us how to avoid past failures while preparing for a fairly predictable future.

As for the surge of protests related to the Black Lives Matter movement, America has remained insistent in its refusal to come to terms with its own racist and sexist ideologies since the founding of this nation in 1776. James Baldwin’s prediction of “The Fire Next Time” has gained greater credence given the events that have trans-

pired before and since the murder of innocent Black men and women like George Floyd or Breonna Taylor earlier this year.

I have made the best of a year in which I have been unable to see my children or grandsons, have stayed mostly home alone with only my two “best friends” – my dogs – to keep me company and relatively sane. I have had to refrain from enjoying my favorite forms of entertainment: attending the theater, shopping, taking trips and relishing in the beauties of nature.

But as history shows us, this, too, shall pass.

Even with the results of the recent presidential election whose outcome provides for new “firsts” with the choice of a woman of color as the nation’s first vice president, we see the significance of both embracing and learning from history. Further, we realize how those in power can use their influence to refute or revise history, if given the opportunity.

Years ago, when I first began to study theology at Emory University, I learned a song which informed me that while I may not know the future, I can be confident in whose “hands” the future is held. That song continues to guide me and give me hope, no matter what how dark the present may seem to appear.

We stand on the precipice of a new year and soon, will usher in a new president to guide our misguided nation. We stand at the intersection of life and death with COVID-19 still maintaining its hold over our lives and the future. But we’re still here. The sun has not failed to come out each tomorrow.

And hope continues to spring eternal.

We made it! That’s reason enough to celebrate!

Councilmember Jack Evans Resigns

Longtime D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans resigned from his Ward 2 amidst allegations that he used his political power for financial gain.

Two attorneys from O’Melveny & Myers presented a report to the council which cited Evans for more than a dozen ethics violations within the last five years that included failing to disclose tens of thousands of dollars in outside income.

Evans also served on the Metro board of directors and became one of the most passionate transit advocates in the D.C. region. He stressed how the federal government needed to provide more financial support to the transit agency. Evans, the longest-serving elected official in the city’s history, served his last day for the ward on Jan. 17. He sought re-election in the June 2 primary but voters did not support his effort. Impeachment Trial of Trump Begins ‘Dean of Senators’ Laid to Rest Gentle. Firm. Infectious smile. Racquetball phenom. Those are just a few words family, friends and former colleagues used to describe Maryland state Sen. Ulysses Currie on Jan. 11 during his funeral attended by hundreds at Allen Chapel AME Church in Southeast. Currie, 82, worked nearly 30 years in the Prince George’s County public school system as a teacher, principal and supervisor of the county’s Head Start program. He garnered the title “Dean of Senators” in recognition of his decades of service as a state lawmaker. Currie, who died Dec. 27 at his home in Forestville, made education his primary focus, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and pursuing doctoral studies in early childhood development at the University of Maryland in College Park. During one of his final votes in 2018, legislators chose to rename the state’s Head Start program the “Ulysses Currie Head Start Program.” WI

A month earlier, the House passed a resolution to remove Trump from office with allegations that he abused his power leading to obstruction of Congress.

After the House delivered the resolution to impeach Trump, the Senate held a trial which included no witnesses. With a Republican majority, the Senate acquitted Trump on Feb. 5. It marked just the third impeachment trial of a president in U.S. history.

Kobe Bryant Dies in Helicopter Crash

Kobe Bryant, a future NBA Hall of Famer who retired from professional basketball in April 2016, died in a helicopter crash Jan. 26 in California. Bryant, 42, was killed along with eight others including his daughter, Gianna, while traveling to the Mamba Academy for Gianna’s basketball practice and game in Thousand Oaks. In February, Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, sued the estate of the deceased pilot, Ara Zobayan, and Island Express for allowing the pilot to fly in unsafe conditions. The Los Angeles Times reported in June the National Transportation Safety Board released text messages, emails and other correspondence documenting the flight. Bryant played 20 years for the Los Angeles Lakers where he won five championships. He was also an 18-time NBA All-Star, a member of the All-NBA team 15 times and chosen as the NBA’s most valuable player in 2008. WI

Demands Rise for Grocery Stores East of the River

Kweisi Mfume Returns to Congress Former NAACP President Kweisi Mfume won a special primary election Feb. 4 to secure the slot for the 7th Congressional district, filling the seat of the late Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) Mfume, 72, received about 44 percent of the vote in a crowded field that included Cummings’ widow, Maya Rockeymore Cummings and state Sen. Jill Carter. Mfume easily won the Nov. 3 general election against his Republican opponent Kimberly Klacik, a Black woman who had the support of President Trump. The district includes a majority of Baltimore City and part of its suburbs. Before his tenure as NAACP president, Mfume served in the House of Representatives from 1986-96 during which he represented the same district. WI

Legislation Calls for Fully Funding Maryland’s HBCUs

Maryland advocates and alumni of the state’s four Historically Black Colleges and Universities pushed for approval of a bill to settle a more than 13-year-old lawsuit. The bill was among the priorities of the Legislative Black Caucus and sponsored by House Speaker Adrienne Jones. It sought $577 million over a 10year period to establish new programs, invest in scholarships and financial aid programs and recruit new faculty. The proposed to be distributed as follows: $24 million for Morgan State University; $16.7 million for Bowie State University; $9.6 million for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore; and $7.2 million for Coppin State University. The legislature approved the measure the following month, but Gov. Larry Hogan vetoed it. With a Democratic majority in Annapolis, lawmakers can override Hogan’s veto when the legislature convenes on Jan. 13. Go-Go Becomes Official Music of D.C.

D.C. City Councilman Vincent Gray (D-Ward 7) pushed for legislation and money to end food desserts in Wards 7 and 8 and provide more full-service grocery stores. Gray, 72, said the two wards have only three grocery stores. The other six wards in the city have an average of nearly eight grocery stores. During the former mayor’s fight to bring needed services to his ward, he defeated six challengers in the June 2 primary and ran unopposed in November’s general election. The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted many inequities which include communities without fresh food options. WI

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed legislation Feb. 19 to make go-go the official music of the District. D.C. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5) championed the legislation with support from local go-go legends including Sugar Bear from EU, James Funk with Rare Essence and Proper Utensils and local activist Ron Moten.

The support grew through the “Don’t Mute DC” movement which began after a noise complaint last year forced the music to be turned off from speakers at a T-Mobile store owned by Donald Campbell of Central Communications at 7th Street and Florida Avenue in Northwest.

The landmark venue showcased the beat that “cranked” on D.C. streets for more than 50 years ago thanks to the late Chuck Brown and other contemporaries. The coronavirus pandemic has halted in-person shows but virtual events have been held such as The DC Lottery celebrating Radio One’s 40th anniversary in October.

Biden Marches Forward on Super Tuesday

Former Vice President Joe Biden received delegate support from nine states March 3 to capture the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. The day, heralded as “Super Tuesday,” counts as the part of the election cycle when the most states and U.S. territories – approximately 15 – hold primaries or caucuses. Several days before Biden captured victories in states such as Texas, Minnesota and North Carolina, he won South Carolina after securing the endorsement of veteran Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.).

“Biden is going to be very successful and he will be our nominee. I really deeply feel he will be the next president of the United States,” Clyburn said.

Not only did Biden win the nomination, he chose California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate. With their victory in November, Harris became the first woman and the first candidate of Black and Asian descent elected as vice president of the U.S. WI

Maryland Creates Coronavirus Response Team Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced March 9 the state would create a seven-member coronavirus response team comprised of medical and emergency experts to advise the state on how to respond and handle the virus. Hogan also issued a mandatory order for state employees to not travel out-of-state and for state agencies to institute a period of telework for some employees “to limit the spread of the virus.” In addition, he received information after a 90-minute meeting with Vice President Mike Pence and “top-ranking” federal officials indicated that adults 60 and older should avoid gatherings or events with large crowds. One week after the announcement, Hogan announced the closure of bars, restaurants, fitness centers and movie theaters based on a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to prohibit gatherings of more than 50 people. In-person instruction at schools ended March 16 – an order remaining in force for the rest of the 2019-20 school year – with virtual learning serving as an alternative form of instruction. Most schools throughout the Greater Washington Area continue with virtual learning models. WI

Virtual Learning Becomes the Norm; More Businesses Close D.C. Public School students returned to the classroom but at home engaged in video conferences, PowerPoint presentations and other online academic activities amid the coronavirus pandemic. Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a public health state of the emergency and ordered in-person instruction at schools to begin “distance learning” or instruction away from the school buildings.

Students received a $1.1 million Digital Equity Fund from private entities and nonprofit organizations to expand internet access and computer devices for students. Meanwhile, Bowser worked with the governors of Maryland and Virginia in a region-wide response against the virus. Bowser and Maryland Gov. Campaign Enlists Cuban Doctors to U.S. The “Get Out of Cuba’s Way” campaign was launched as part of an effort to enlist Cuba’s Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade as a resource for U.S. doctors treating COVID-19 patients. Weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic, the District began to experience the economic impact of ceasing economic activity. During an April 24 virtual press conference, Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey S. DeWitt announced the District’s recession status and predicted an economic recovery period of no less than two years. Meeting that goal, he said, would require a reduction of more than $720 million in the District’s FY 2020 operating budget. An additional $773 million in cuts would be reflected in D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s FY 2021 budget proposal. The report, and DeWitt’s recommendations, laid the groundwork for the phased reopening that would take place later in the summer.

MoCo Police Shooting of Finan Berhe Causes Fury During an early May confrontation in a White Oak park, Montgomery County Police Sergeant David Cohen fatally shot Finan Berhe multiple times in the chest. Though authorities cited Berhe’s possession of a knife, friends and family said he suffered from mental health issues. The deadly encounter sparked protests, led by Berhe’s family and the Silver Spring Justice Coalition. ‘Black Lives Matter’ Mural Sparks Emotional Responses

Less than two weeks after George Floyd’s on-camera death sparked protests across the country, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) commissioned the painting of a “Black Lives Matter” mural, stretching more than two blocks along 16th Street and starting at Lafayette Park. The decision occurred in the wake of federal military forces who allegedly attacked peaceful protesters. The mural, located in the newly-minted Black Lives Matter Plaza, has since been the scene of subsequent protests and celebrations including the election of Joe Biden to the White House. Protestors Circle the Fish Market Following Racial Incident

Protests continued outside The Fish Market in Clinton, Md. that had been closed for more than a week, organizers and patrons decided to showcase Black-owned businesses across the street.

To accentuate that point, the event took place on America’s holiday, the Fourth of July.

“We are not only promoting our business, [but] we need people to understand we are important as well,” said Valerie Taylor, who’s owned Taylor Design with her husband, Brian, for 22 years. “In order for us to move up in our ranks, we must protest. We must let people know what’s going on.”

Farrakhan Issues Call for Morality In his first public address since February — and in his own words one of the last times the world will hear from him — the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, 87, of the Nation of Islam (NOI), delivered a July Fourth message which raised a clarion call to international leaders, including President Donald Trump, and to those who guide global communities of faith.

And while he acknowledged his long-declining physical health, which began over a decade ago due to cancer and a subsequent heart attack, he spoke for well over three hours, sitting when necessary and relying on the support of several Fruit of Islam members who kept him from falling. Nonetheless, he mustered the strength to deliver his message which addressed the current state of affairs in the U.S., the COVID-19 pandemic and clarification on several issues for which he has long been criticized including anti-Semitism, homosexuality and Black nationalism. Through a tumultuous series of events occurring over the past few months, Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder and leadership worked in unison on July 3 to review a possible name change of the oldest team in the NFL. Just 10 days later, the organization announced that the team would retire the name “Redskins” and its logo of a native American man.

“On July 3rd, we announced the commencement of a thorough review of the team’s name,” the franchise said in a statement.

“That review has begun in earnest. As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward. Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.

“Dan Snyder and Coach [Ron] Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years,” the statement said.

Obama Eulogizes John Lewis

A loud shout of cheers went up outsidse of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where crowds watching on a big-screen television Thursday rose from their lawn chairs and makeshift seats as former President Barack Obama approached the famous pulpit to deliver the eulogy for Rep. John Lewis.

Inside the historic building where mourners observed social distancing guidelines that prevented an above-capacity gathering, the crowd rose in unison as Obama declared Lewis a “founding father of that fuller, fairer, better America.”

The former president spoke fervently about Lewis’ battle to secure rights — including voting rights — for African Americans and, by extension, all United States citizens.

“Congressman John Lewis devoted his time on this Earth fighting the very attacks on democracy we’re seeing circulate right now,” Obama said.

August Kamala Harris Surfaces with VP Nod Following months of speculation and debate over whether Biden should pick a Black woman as his running mate, Harris was named Tuesday as Biden’s choice.

Biden reportedly had called Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), former Ambassador Susan Rice, and three other candidates to inform them on Tuesday morning that they were not his pick.

Harris had routinely been seen as the top pick, but her clashes with Biden during the Democratic debates appeared to give Biden pause.

America’s economic situation has plummeted since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis and families across race and ethnicity feel the pain, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution which says that the coronavirus now stands as the third leading cause of death among African Americans.

“If I told you on January 1 that a new virus that we did not even know about would, in August, be the third leading cause of death for Black Americans, our hair should have been set on fire and we would have an extensive public policy response to this unprecedented pandemic,” noted Trevon Logan, professor of economics at the Ohio State University.

Logan co-authored the report titled, “The Hamilton Project, Racial Economic Inequality Amid the COVID-19 Crisis,” with Bradley L. Hardy of the American University in Northwest.

“In 2020, more Black Americans will die of COVID-19 than will succumb to diabetes, strokes, accidents, or pneumonia. In fact, COVID-19 is currently the third leading cause of death for African Americans,” Logan and Hardy concluded. WI

Rent Strike at Woodner Apartments

The rent strike taking place among more than 150 tenants at the Woodner Apartments, considered one of the largest apartment complexes in the District, received more attention in August as the coronavirus pandemic continued.

Instead of paying rent, many participants, like Modesto King, decided to save what little money they have, or purchase food, toiletries and other items deemed a greater priority.

And while their campaign to get rent canceled during the coronavirus pandemic has gained some traction, subsequent negotiations haven’t brought about the change intended by those organizing the strike.

Though management proposed a payment plan where tenants could pay a portion of their overdue rent balance later without penalty, King said such an overture wouldn’t suffice at a time when he sees food lines getting longer and families becoming increasingly anxious. WI

September Pancreatic Cancer Claims ‘Notorious RBG’ Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the venerable Supreme Court justice renowned for her championing of gender equality and women’s rights, has died, according to a statement Friday from the Supreme Court. She was 87.

The iconic liberal justice died of complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas, the high court said.

Initially diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2009, Ginsburg underwent treatment several for recurrences of the disease, though she vowed not to retire as long as she was physically capable of serving.

Her death comes less than two months before the presidential election in November, and a Republican Senate, which refused to vote on a nomination by former President Barack Obama in his last year in office, pushed through President Trump’s nominee, Justice Amy Barrett Cohen, just a couple of weeks before the Nov. 3 election. Police Interaction Debated After Another Black Youth Dies In the days after the release of body-camera footage showing Deon Kay’s last moments, debates have raged on about his alleged possession of a gun, and how he and other young people in his Southeast community should behave when interacting with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

During a recent vigil for Kay, many of those who converged on the corner of Mellon Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue made known their position on the matter when, seconds before releasing several balloons into the sky, they loudly chanted a widely popular, and obscene, slogan often aimed at law enforcement officials.

The failure to indict Louisville Metro Police Department officers following the shooting death of Breonna Taylor, 26, a Black emergency medical technician, after a botched drug raid at her apartment has triggered more outrage and disgust over how little Black lives matter in America, particularly under the racially insensitive administration of President Donald Trump.

While the Sept. 23 decision by the grand jury in Louisville doesn’t directly fall under his administration’s jurisdiction, it’s clear that it at least had Trump’s imprint in the form of Daniel Cameron, state attorney general who’s both a Republican and a devout supporter of the president.

Like the president, who often plays as fast and loose with the truth and has fought for four years to prevent the release of items like his personal tax returns and business dealings, Cameron has refused to provide the public with exactly what he presented to the grand jury.

Despite calls for transparency by Taylor’s attorneys, Kentucky’s governor and the at-large public, Cameron has steadfastly ignored such requests. Three members of the grand jury have since come forward through attorneys to reveal that Cameron 5 Kentucky AG fails to indict police in Breonna Taylor murder. Josey-Herring Sworn in as D.C. Superior Court’s First Female Chief Judge In a historic ceremony conducted virtually on Oct. 16, D.C. Superior Court Associate Judge Anita Josey-Herring (left) became the first African American woman to lead the D.C. Superior Court as chief judge. Herring also became the trial court’s first female leader, also.

As chief judge, Herring will serve a four-year term and assign cases and responsibilities to the 61 associate judges of the Superior Court’s nine divisions. The ceremony took place in the H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse in Northwest.

The outgoing Chief Judge Robert Morin presided over the event, U.S. District Court Judge Emmett Sullivan read the commission of Josey-Herring becoming the chief judge and D.C. Superior Court Senior Judge Herbert Dixon administered the oath while her husband, Albert Herring, held the Bible. In her remarks, Josey-Herring said, “I put my name for this position because I believe in justice.”

“Justice without respect to persons,” she said. “I believe in equal rights for the rich and the poor and I will defend the U.S. Constitution.” WI

2021 Urban Journalism Workshop Learn print, radio, television & digital The Washington Association of Black Journalists encourages Washington, D.C.-area high school students to apply to its annual Urban Journalism Workshop (UJW). The winter/spring 2021 session celebrates 35 years. Longtime Chicago Tribune and St. Louis Times Dispatch reporter George Curry, former Washington Post reporter Athelia Knight and others started the program in 1986. UJW gives students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of print, radio, TV and online news. Current and former journalists with The Washington Post, NPR, The Washington Informer and other outlets volunteer to teach and mentor participants. Seniors who enter the program’s essay contest compete for a scholarship.

Yearwood Determined to Retire Historic Building’s Mortgage While buildings, as the creation and inspirations of architects and engineers, represent projects made of bricks, concrete and steel—some edifices have infrequently been afforded such honor and respect with local folklore that they’ve become almost human.

Perhaps that explains why one adage, used to imagine how history took shape in buildings through human ingenuity as trailblazers of the past paved the way for brighter tomorrows, continues to be uttered: if these walls could talk.

Consider the five-storied Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage, over a century old, nestled within a community mainly comprised of residential dwellings along 12th Street., N.W. Decades ago, the community served as a major artery for the comings and goings of Blacks visiting, living, or working in the District.

In more prosperous times, more than 41,000 people frequented the Center each year to utilize the multi-purpose facility and to engage in a diverse array of programs—conceived, created and coordinated by Thomasina W. Yearwood, president/CEO, TMCT—a position she’s held since TMCT’s founding 20 years ago. However, since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in mid-March, Yearwood said the Center has largely become quiet, but a $2.3 million renovation mortgage still must be taken care of.

Letter from the Editor 2020 was one hell of a year. For some, it served as a much-needed opportunity to press reset and pivot into new spaces. For others, the year brought more grief than growth. We baked our hearts out and watched as couples either dug their heels in for the long-haul or decided to call it quits.

We sat in quarantine for months and witnessed the reckoning of our nation's long history of racial and social injustice. We watched as countless lives were lost, we felt the entire spectrum of emotion, we took to the streets, and we voted Trump out. Plant parenting became a thing, Black folks received their vo superpowers, and we discovered buried lakes on Mars. Congratulations, we have officially made it through the first installment of a dystopian, afro-futuristic series; affectionately known as life.

If we have learned nothing else, be it triumph or trauma, the road ahead is long, and where it leads is entirely up to you. As we look forward to 2021, I encourage you to reflect upon the year and how your story will continue.

What will you take with you? What will you leave behind? Are you ready to walk in your purpose? Can you choose love over fear every time? Do you feel the power of collective consciousness on the rise? I suppose only time will tell. Until then, be well. Be strong, be brave, and "to thine ownself be true."

LAFAYETTE BARNES, PUBLISHER So much can be said about Lafayette Barnes IV, most of which is positive, at least in my slightly biased opinion.

We had big plans coming into 2020. Many of them were upended by the Covid-19 pandemic but the spirit of our paper and our leader remained strong. Reflecting over the year, in “how it started vs. how it’s going” form, Lafayette remembers a time where he thought The Bridge could be his “side hustle” and how that quickly morphed into a higher calling.

“When I look at photos from a few years ago, I have a lot of pictures from parties, being turnt up, and I was still doing things with the paper but it was more riding the wave instead of making the wave,” Lafayette explained. “I quickly realized that this is a legitimate business that needs 100 percent of my attention for it to be worthwhile.”

When he says worthwhile, he doesn’t just mean for himself or his family, but for D.C. and beyond. The Bridge is the continuation of a legacy for the Washington Informer and the Black press as a whole. In recent years, we have seen a resurgence in support of the Black press that Lafayette attributes to fake news, polarized communities, and propaganda from every direction.

“The Black press have always been the ones who’ve had to tell the truth about Black life while mainstream media has always either sugar coated or dramatized it” he said.

With this sense of responsibility, Lafayette said he looks forward to being more of a guide to D.C.-area millennials in 2021. “We have a variety of content in the pipeline including podcasts, blogs, video content, social media and email content,” he told The Bridge. “I am excited to get feedback on that content from the city and just improve our stance and create value for businesses and individuals in D.C.”

An interview with Washington Informer Bridge Editor Claudia Watts is a study in how to appreciate someone who -- because they understand the value of words -- curates her sentences to celebrate how they see modern journalism as an existentialist art showcase.

The native of Baltimore County, Maryland, and Howard University graduate who has spent 15 years in Washington, D.C. compares Black life at-present in the once and forever Chocolate City to another exciting artistic era.

“This age of awakening is similar to the Harlem Renaissance,” Claudia continues. “Self-determined and community-minded Black people are doing noteworthy things! They’re entrepreneurs and taking steps to create generational wealth for their families.”

Pausing between thoughts, she continues, “These stories are best when told by Black voices. Typically, people that look like you, on some level, understand your plight.”

Regarding her thoughts about a year that has seen the Bridge grow in popularity, she's not stunned by the brand's surge in acclaim.

“WI Bridge deserves to be a serious editorial publication that is befitting being aligned with the Washington Informer, one of America’s oldest and most respected Black newspapers.”

“WI Bridge is in the business of authentically relaying truthful stories that empower Black bodies, minds, voices, and hearts. We do so with a keen awareness of focusing on the mix of strength and spirituality required to allow Black people’s best selves to emerge. I want to elevate the stories that allow the Bridge to add value to D.C. arts and culture, but Black culture, overall, worldwide.”

SAM P.K. COLLINS, COPY EDITOR As 2020 comes to a close, Washington Informer contributing writer and Bridge copy editor Sam P.K. Collins said he’s further committing to looking inward for the happiness and peace that this year forced him to acquire.

Born and raised in Northwest, Collins recognized his journalistic aptitude early on in middle school, having encouragement from his father to join his school newspaper. In high school, Collins continued to nurture his writing ability when he contributed to Young D.C., a regional youth newspaper.

Several years later, after matriculating to The George Washington University and joining The Informer as a graduate student, Collins has developed, and continues to maintain, the skill of covering any news beat.

Even so, he finds his greatest passion to be education, and the conscientious work of empowering people of the African diaspora. For the last five years, he has done so through AllEyesOnDC, a grassroots journalism platform that features the work of real Black people and highlights local news in a way that raises people’s awareness about the conditions affecting people of African descent across the world.

That’s the mindset Collins said he’s extended in his work with The Bridge.

“Thinking about ourselves often as American first is futile,” he told The Bridge. “That's a message that I attempt to articulate as a reporter from D.C. Part of that is establishing a value system where people understand that if they’re part of a group, a global majority, that they see themselves as such. Hoping to conscientize people, because once again, oftentimes, that’s how you effect change.

CONTRIBUTING WRITER In the more-than-18 months since she has joined The Bridge, Cherrelle Swain has not only used her love for the written word to shed light on millennial change agents, but allowed The Bridge the opportunity to document her three-week bus tour this summer through Ferguson and other epicenters of the ongoing movement for racial justice.

As the clock winds down on one of the most consequential years of this lifetime, Cherrelle said she has set her sights on the future, which includes more stories about education and community wellness, and a particular focus on the Black woman’s divine femininity that aligns with a documentary currently in the works.

“This year was about the pivot, wellness, interconnection, and restoring one another by making quick changes in our daily lives, but also in a really heightened energetic environment around a lot of racial tension,” said Cherrelle, a self-described social change maker who connects people and ideas to solve problems.

Cherrelle, who serves as a director of community engagement and strategic growth at CityBridge Education, reflected on moments in her transition from poetry to journalism that brought disappointment, but strengthened her resolve to tell others’ stories.

Her body of work at The Bridge, she said, has always augmented her support of activists and organizers, which she has continued through the Black Voices for Black Justice Fund and her burgeoning independent venture. “I think The Bridge allowed me to step into my work from an activist and creative front where I was intentional about telling the story of the work I was doing, and documenting how that feels and the vulnerabilities around it,” Cherrelle told The Bridge. “It was humanizing in a way. That’s what I think is beautiful about working in a team of storytellers.”

CONTRIBUTING WRITER “At my highest self, I am a creator. I am a lover of poetry. I am a lover of words. I am a lover of the people. Writing is something that has been innate in me since I was a kid. Some people wanted to go to parties, but I spent Friday nights at Borders. You know, before it closed. I was especially moved by Walter Dean Myers — a Black male author from Harlem, New York. I just love his books. I loved how his stories captured the raw emotion of youth that looked like me! He had so many powerful narratives that really inspired my poetry, my writing, and taught me to always try to leave a visceral effect on the reader. I take a lot of pride in being able to tell other people’s stories. It means a lot that people are entrusting me to tell their story correctly. I’ve been writing for the Washington Informer and The Bridge since December 2019, but I was born in D.C. and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. I’m learning that you have to move with opportunities as they’re presented or you won’t build success. And by success I mean being able to heal people — helping others by sharing their joy or their pain or their lessons. I always aspire to walk in my path out loud with no boundaries to who I am or who I’m meant to be. I’m looking forward to my work being able to take me different places and to share with different audiences.

Now the goal is much bigger. It’s about inspiring others to walk in their paths out loud, too. And to be able to share in that moment.”

CONTRIBUTING WRITER Marcus Dowling’s journalism career started 25 years ago. His early years involved writing for Providence College’s student newspaper, and eventually working across numerous sites in the blogosphere.

Marcus has now gravitated to an opinionated journalism style that has gifted readers with a perspective that is rare in the world of music and culture. A native Washingtoninan, Marcus curiously noticed the trend of White hipsters mirroring Black culture in the early 2000s.

“I just found a lot of the culture and fashion to be a ‘remix’ of urban culture from places that were traditional Black meccas.” said Marcus. He continued, “This hipster dance period was mostly composed of white teenagers and producers essentially making very stereotypically hyper-urban Black music. I had to document this evolution.”

Ma Marcus quickly became fully absorbed into the culture as a freelancer covering underground and mainstream music. He has gone on to write for countless outlets, including Vice, Complex, and Spotify. Since 2019, he has written for The Bridge, telling emergent stories about the next iconic figures and events shaping the future of D.C. culture.

“There has to be fun to it (writing) or you're going to drive yourself absolutely crazy and be very tired,” Marcus told The Bridge.

Ma Marcus said he will remember 2020 as being phenomenal. He used this unprecedented year to diversify his body of work, diving into country music via Country Music Television and the Nashville Scene. He also documented the history of Chicago house music for Mixmag, all from the confines of his home in the District.

CONTRIBUTING WRITER Hailing from Philadelphia, Saskia Kercy moved to Washington D.C. in 2019 after graduating from Temple University. She stumbled upon The Bridge via a friend who saw an IG post calling for contributors. It became her first post-grad writing opportunity.

“The Bridge gave me exactly what I didn’t know I needed,” Saskia said.”It connected me to people who I probably would have never had the opportunity to meet, to learn so many people’s stories, and gain a new understanding and appreciation for D.C.” The last two years have proven to be a point of transformation for Saskia. Growing up, she always wanted to be a writer. As she stepped into that identity, she soon found herself taking on another.

Slowly coming into herself as a creative, Saskia credits The Bridge with challenging her to shift her intentions and attention toward D.C. culture. “It was an interesting experience transitioning to a hyper-local perspective. And now, I have something else that I am fighting for,” she explained.

As we move into the new year, Saskia said she’s looking forward to exploring how the incoming presidential administration will address D.C. statehood and other issues. She’s also curious about newly elected D.C. council members and whether they will effect change in the way their constituents desire.

Gladys Weatherspoon Wins Seat on Prince George’s Circuit Court

Cora Masters Barry has spent a great deal of time since the passing of her husband, former four-term mayor and D.C. Councilmember Marion S. Barry Jr., trying to keep his legacy alive in the District.

Since his death on Nov. 23, 2014, she has worked with District leaders on projects such as having a statute of his likeness in front of the John A. Wilson Building in Northwest. On Nov. 12, Cora Barry celebrated another milestone when city leaders dedicated the One Judiciary Square Building in Northwest as the “Marion S. Barry, Jr. Building.”

“This is a significant, historic event that is the beginning, not only of telling the story of the contributions of Marion S. Barry, Jr., but also of the city,” Cora Barry said. “My husband loved Washington, D.C. and its residents. He would be honored to know that Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson have honored his legacy in this wonderful way. I want to thank them.”

Cora Barry continues to work on other ways to honor Marion Barry, with a thoroughfare east of the Anacostia River and possibly Ballou Senior High School in Ward 8 named for him. WI

Anecdotal evidence has shown hundreds of attorneys selected as Circuit Court judges in Maryland either worked as local or state prosecutors, or went through a vetting process screened by bipartisan groups that has helped choose the majority of judges later appointed by the governor since 1970. Gladys Weatherspoon, a practicing defense attorney for 25 years, did neither and ran an independent campaign for Prince George’s County Circuit Court judge.

According to unofficial results, she received the most votes with 216,676 on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Weatherspoon joined the four candidates who ran as a slate to win a 15-year term on the bench.

Circuit court judges hear major criminal cases that involve a person charged with a felony and major civil cases such as divorce and child support. Appeals in cases from the county’s district court, which handle lower level offenses, are also heard on the circuit court. WI

D.C. Council Set to Have Female Majority in 2021 Vickie A. Wright-Smith passionately believes women should become a sustaining political force in District politics.

She has practiced what she preaches by serving as an advisory neighborhood commissioner in her Columbia Heights area in Ward 1.

Wright-Smith participates in District Democratic politics and has an active membership with DC Women in Politics (WIN), an organization designed to support women’s political ambitions.

On Nov. 4, Wright-Smith has an upbeat attitude about the general elections that just took place. She rejoiced about the victories of Christina Henderson as an independent at-large councilmember and Janeese Lewis George as the D.C. Council’s Ward 4 representative. The presence of Henderson and George will make the D.C. Council a majority female legislative body and Wright-Smith said that makes her happy.

“I saw it coming,” she said. “Christina has the endorsement of Councilmember David Grosso and we in DC WIN worked to get her elected.

Women will have seven seats on the D.C. Council and that constitutes a majority. We should see real change at the John A. Wilson Building now that there are more of us on the council.”

The new council will take office in January and kick off Council Period 24. WI

President-Elect Biden: ‘The African American Community Stood Up for Me Again’

Black people are sure to remember those remarks that a triumphant President-elect Joe Biden made shortly after taking the stage to celebrate his victory over Republican Donald Trump.

“I said from the outset I wanted a campaign that represented America, and I think we did that. Now that’s what I want the administration to look like,” Biden remarked during his victory speech at the Chase Center in Wilmington, Del. Presidential campaign experts credit the endorsement of Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) which produced a win in the South Carolina Democratic primary that propelled the former vice president to the party nomination. While Trump won more support among Blacks this year than in 2016, Biden got 87 percent of the African American vote, performing better among Black voters than any other demographic group.

The race for the White House was decided in racially diverse urban centers and increasingly diverse suburbs in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, Arizona and the District formerly represented by the late Congressman John Lewis in Georgia. NBC noted that “the Black people who make up 39 percent or more of the population in those areas chose Biden, with some exceptions.”

Biden and U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, the vice president-elect, will be sworn on Jan. 20 at the U.S. Capitol in what will be a virtual ceremony. A small crowd of people will be at the ceremony, but the Biden inauguration team encourages Americans to view the event on television.

Violence Erupts in Nation’s Capital During MAGA Rally Thousands of white nationalists gathered with far-right militia groups on Freedom Plaza in D.C. on Saturday to vocalize their support of lame-duck President Donald Trump and help bolster his false claims that Democrats stole the 2020 election.

With many of the participants refusing to use face coverings, the pro-Trump demonstrators included members of Boogaloo and the Proud Boys. Police reported at least 20 arrests after many in the crowd lingered into the night, hurling rocks, bottles and other objects at counterdemonstrators and even innocent passersby.

Numerous videos uploaded to the internet showed that appeared to be members of the Proud Boys knocking a man to the ground, stomping on and brutally kicking him as a woman attempted to come to the man’s aid.

New Coronavirus Vaccine Requires ‘Trust of African-American Community’ News that Pfizer/BioNTech have announced that their coronavirus vaccine resulted in a more than 90 percent effective rate in preventing COVID-19, for those without previous infection, comes as the U.S. continues to see record-breaking new cases.

For the first time on Thursday, Nov. 12, the U.S. surpassed 150,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day.

The total number of cases has soared past 10.5 million, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Both California and Texas have recorded more than 1 million total cases, while states like Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey have seen significant rises in COVID-19 infections.

Dr. James E.K. Hildreth, one of the world’s foremost immunologists and president and CEO of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, counts as a recent appointee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s commission responsible for ultimately approving any vaccines including Pfizer’s. Hildreth, an African American, insists that any vaccine must have the confidence of Blacks.

“I’ve made the decision that I’m going to participate in one of the vaccine trials. The trust issue cannot be overstated,” Hildreth said. “We have to have more trusted messengers and more trusted opinion leaders to make this work.”

Efforts are ongoing by public health and some African American leaders for Blacks to take the COVID-19 vaccine despite the history of abuse by the country’s medical system. WI

Thanksgiving Spirit—And Free Food—Are Abundant in Prince George’s County

Allison Canada of Capitol Heights drove to the nearby Peppermill Community Center last weekend to pick up free food for the Thanksgiving holiday, but supplies were exhausted in about an hour.

Her disappointment was short-lived though. Less than five minutes later, she spotted a line of vehicles stretched about a block long to receive free meals outside Impact One Church in Capitol Heights, decided to pull in line and wait.

“I got a turkey, apples, sweet potatoes, potatoes, onions, string beans, macaroni and cheese, canned corn, cornbread. Glad I turned around,” said Canada, a program assistant at The Pathways Schools based in Silver Spring. “With what’s going on, it’s appreciated. I have three kids at home.

This helps a lot. It’s free food. I can save money and get more food. It shows the public people care.”

Impact One Church served as one of the many locations in Prince George’s County that distributed free meals for Thanksgiving on Saturday, Nov. 21.

This year, COVID-19 has presented additional mental, social and physical challenges to the majority-Black jurisdiction that caused thousands of workers to become unemployed and face evictions from their homes.

Even worse: the virus claimed 900 Prince Georgians in about seven months.

Efforts continue in Prince George’s County by churches and social service organizations to provide food to hungry families. WI

Electoral College Seals President-Elect Biden’s Victory On Monday, the nation’s Electoral College officially stamped Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as president-elect and vice president-elect.

A total of 538 electors from every state and the District took part in the critical portion of the U.S. electoral process, voting to affirm the votes cast during the 2020 election. Locally and in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment which granted women the right to vote, women served as the three electors from the District—each casting their vote Monday afternoon for Biden and Harris.

“I represent those who have been undervalued and underrepresented,” said Meedie Bardonille, a District elector who serves as a registered nurse and chair of the District of Columbia Board of Nursing.

A Howard University graduate, Bardonille said she cast her vote with a greater sense of pride with Harris also counting as a Bison.

“It is validation that we cracked not just the glass ceiling, but the concrete walls built to keep us out, and have finally taken our place at the political table,” Bardonille said.

On Jan. 6, Congress will review the Electoral College results and are expected to approve them despite likely Republican opposition to the process.

Metropolitan Police are investigating vandalism directed at four downtown D.C. churches—two of them Black churches steeped in history—in the wake of weekend violence lined to pro-Trump demonstrations that left four people stabbed and 32 people arrested.

With more than a little fanfare and lots of hope, the Bowser administration took possession of the first wave of vaccine to block the novel coronavirus less than three days after the vaccine had received formal federal approval for human use.

Now, District officials, along with the other local, state and federal officials must figure out how, when and where to stage inoculations. And, most critically, who’s first?

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with D.C. Director of Health Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, explained the 5 (WI File Photo) process at a news conference on Dec. 10. The mayor said she realizes District residents want this pandemic to end.

“I know that we are all ready for this pandemic to be over,” she said. “And there is good news: a vaccine is on the way. D.C. Health has been preparing for the eventual arrival of a vaccine since the beginning of the pandemic. Since March, our community has worked hard and sacrificed to save lives and protect our most vulnerable residents.”

Bowser said, “Now we are ready to lead an equitable distribution of a safe and effective vaccine” adding “the next few weeks and months will be critical.”

FICTION

"Anxious People" by Fredrik Backman starts out kind of weird, as if it consists of half-thoughts. Stick around a few more pages, though, and you'll be rewarded with a hilarious, sweet, wild tale of a robbed bank, a real estate open house, and heart. Put this at the top of your list, if you love novels.

Both "Beheld" by TaraShea Nesbit and "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" by V.E. Schwab involve women in situations that are dark and dangerous: In the Nesbit book, a Pilgrim village holds secrets that are not discussed, and the wife of the town troublemaker knows too much.

In the Schwab novel, a headstrong young woman makes a decision she might regret for the rest of her very long life.

There's a hint of feminism in both books, and they'll both give you shivers for months after you finish them.

Fans of thrillers will eat up "The Last Flight" by Julie Clark, a tale of an abusive husband, swapped identities, and murder – or maybe not.

If you like heart-pounding cat-and-mouse tales, this is your book . . . only here, you sometimes don't know which is the cat and there's an extra, menacing mouse.

A wide, sweeping experiment in tolerance is at the heart of "Under the Rainbow" by Celia Lasky.

Acceptance Across America, an LGBTQ organization, is about to see if they can change the hearts and minds of bigots in SmallTown America by moving a handful of gay men and lesbians to Big Burr, Kansas. This novel, told from the POV of the town's residents, is full of humor, love, secrets, haters, strife, and everything else you want in a novel.

"How to Astronaut: Everything You Need to Know Before Leaving Earth" by Terry Virts is fun and lighthearted, and will put you back in touch with your inner child, the one that really wanted to grow up to be an astronaut.

It's filled with inside information, fun facts, a bit of memoir, and it's timely. Space Force, anyone?

Pet lovers absolutely should not miss "Good Boy" by Jennifer Finney Boylan, a memoir of life and family told in seven dogs that Boylan lived with and loved.

What lands this book on the list is that Boylan will make you reminisce about all the Good Boys (and Girls) you've loved and lost, too.

Speaking of books that make you think, "We're Better Than This: My Fight for the Future of Our Democracy" by Elijah Cummings with James Dale is the perfect book to read at the end of a tough political year. Written literally as Cummings was dying, this book is full of calming words that can help heal. If you feel beaten up by the past few months, this book is a balm for your soul.

While "The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty, and War" by John "Chick" Donohue & J.T. Molloy may seem like a romp, it's much more. Back when Donohue was a

merchant seaman, he volunteered to take a beer to each of the hometown neighborhood "boys" in Vietnam. Finding them was half the problem; war was the other half. This is the consummate buddy book, and it can't be missed.

Anyone who's a sucker for a good Mother-and-Child book will love "Like Crazy: Life with My Mother and Her Invisible Friends" by Dan Mathews, who renovated a Victorian house and moved his mentally-ill, elderly mother in with him. She's charming and funny, but she's also a handful. Read it. Bring tissues.

Then, older teens will love Stone's "Dear Justyce," a story told in letters from a young man in prison to his friend, who chose another life path.

Despite a year tainted by the impact of COVID-19, there were dazzling moments in sports in 2020 suggesting physical skill, in both individual and team competition, that would not be muzzled by a pandemic.

One instance of that was the National Basketball Association’s “bubble” concept where all the players who agreed to confine themselves in a virus-free environment competed for the NBA championship.

Even with the league watching closely for evidence that the novel coronavirus would extract a physical price from finely-tuned pro basketball players, Los Angeles Laker LeBron James made a case for being mentioned as one of the greatest players of all-time.

James made history yet again, earning Finals MVP honors for the third franchise in his career (one-of-four players in league history) after dominating the Miami Heat in Game 6, 106-93, in the NBA Finals on Oct. 11. He finished with a triple-double performance with 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.

“I think personally thinking I have something to prove fuels me and it fueled me this last year and a half,” said James with a cigar in his hand after a momentous win.

Ron Rivera Takes the Helm for Washington Before the start of the 2020 NFL regular season, Washington was without a name and first-year head coach Ron Rivera had the task of revitalizing a franchise that only won 17 games in the last three years (2017-2019).

Rivera was diagnosed with cancer during training camp but finished his treatments earlier this year while still leading the Burgundy and Gold on the sidelines. His name is being mentioned as an NFL Coach of the Year candidate leading the cellar-dweller Washington Football Team to first place in the NFC East Division.

Rivera has already won the prestigious award twice in his career, showcasing his ability to turn teams around as he did for the Carolina Panthers earlier in his career.

“It’s crazy how the season started; I mean, we were on an uphill start. We are trusting each other every week and I feel like everyone can see that. We just keep rolling and who knows how far we can go,” said Washington Football Team safety Kamren Curl.

Howard University’s Makur Maker sparked a movement for top talent in the nation to transfer from power conference schools and attend Historically Black Colleges and University’s (HBCUs). He became the first five-star recruit to play for the Bison in school history.

The 22-year-old was one of the most highly-touted basketball recruits in the nation, drawing strong interest from Power Five conferences.

Schools interested in him included: Kansas, Kentucky, Auburn, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Memphis and Washington. However, Maker decided that Howard was the best fit.

“I was the first to announce my visit to Howard and others started to dream ‘what if.’ I needed to make the HBCU movement real so that others will follow. I hope I inspire guys like Mikey Williams to join me on this journey. Wall Departs from D.C. After Nearly a Decade The Washington Wizards traded point guard John Wall and gave up a first-round draft pick to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Russell Westbrook on Dec. 2.

In Memoriam Compiled by Dorothy Rowley WI Staff Writer Each year, the Washington Informer pays tribute to our most notable Black brothers and sisters who have transitioned over the past 12 months.

While it’s never easy to say goodbye to those we’ve come to love and admire, it’s always a good feeling to remember the indelible marks of success many have left on this phenomenon we call life, as they strove to inspire others to follow the good examples they have set.

January:

The new year began tragically with the suspected drug overdose death on Jan. 1 of Nick Gordon, who was most famous for his relationship with Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. He was only 30.

NBA legend Kobe Bryant and daughter Gianna passed away on Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash Calabasas, Calif. He was 41 and had played his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association. Bryant entered the NBA directly from high school and won five NBA championships.

Earl G. Graves Sr., who championed the intersection of Black people, the business world and personal finance on his way to founding the seminal Black Enterprise magazine and growing it into a bona fide multimedia conglomerate, died April 7 following complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 85 years old.

May:

Betty Wright, 66, who died on May 10., was an R&B singer, songwriter and background vocalist. Beginning her professional career in the late 1960s as a teenager, Wright rose to fame in the 1970s with hits such as "Clean Up Woman" and "Tonight Is the Night.”

Legendary rock n’ roll pioneer Little Richard (right) died May 9 at the age of 87. The reports of his death followed that of the death of iconic hip-hop executive Andre Harrell, who discovered Sean “Diddy” Combs. Harrell was 59 and died May 8.

Fred L. Davis, the former longtime Memphis city council member and civil rights activist who marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., died May 12 following an illness.

He was 86 years old.

June:

Famed actress Ja’Net DuBois, who played the role of Willona Woods on “Good Times,” died Feb. 18 at the age of 74. DuBois reportedly unexpectedly died in her sleep while at her Glendale, California home.

July:

Katherine Johnson, the pioneering “Hidden Figures” NASA mathematician who died Feb. 24 at 101 years old. “She was an American hero, and her pioneering legacy will never be forgotten,” NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine wrote in a tweet when announcing her death.

March:

Georgia Congressman John Lewis (right), a civil rights activist and leader who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death on July 17. He was chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee from 1963 to 1966. Lewis died on July 17 at the age of 80 following a battle with Stage IV pancreatic cancer that he announced late last year.

Rev. C.T. Vivian, a civil rights leader whose close association with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped fuel efforts toward achieving racial equality, died July 17 at the age of 95. Click here to read more about his life.

Legendary soul singer Bill Withers was 81 years old and had recorded several major hits, including "Ain't No Sunshine", "Grandma's Hands", "Use Me", "Lean on Me", "Lovely Day", and "Just the Two of Us". Withers won three Grammy Awards and was nominated for six more. He died on March 30.

The Rev. Dr. Joseph Echols Lowery, who was also known as the dean of civil rights, died March 27 at age 98.

Lowery was widely regarded as the top lieutenant for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and contributed to the civil rights movement in the most profound ways that include working to end segregation on buses in Mobile, Ala., before Rosa Parks as well as being a co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain died on July 30 following a brief battle with coronavirus. He was 74. Cain, who was also the former chair of the Kansas City Federal Reserve as well as the one-time chief executive of the Godfather’s Pizza chain, was a loyal supporter of President Donald Trump. He may have contracted the coronavirus after attending a heavily attended rally for Trump without wearing a mask.

Bishop Barbara Harris...the world’s first ordained Episcopal bishop who is a woman, died March 13.

April:

Cheryl A. Wall, an award-winning scholar of African American literature and a Board of Governors Zora Neale Hurston Professor of English at Rutgers University, died April 18. She was 71 years old and had planned to retire at the end of this school year, according to the university.

Bonnie Pointer, the founding member of The Pointer Sisters died at age 69 on June 8. “It is with great sadness that I have to announce to the fans of The Pointer Sisters that my sister Bonnie died this morning,” she told TMZ. “Our family is devastated. On behalf of my siblings and I and the entire Pointer family, we ask for your prayers at this time.”

Wes Unseld, the venerable NBA Hall of Fame player who was the star on the Washington Bullets’ only championship team has died. The Washington Wizards announced that Unseld died June 2 “surrounded by family following lengthy health battles, most recently pneumonia.” Unseld was 74 years old.

February:

Ellis Marsalis Jr. (right) , a legendary jazz pianist who is also the father of accomplished jazz musicians Branford and Wynton Marsalis, died April 1 from complications after contracting the coronavirus. He was 85 years old.

Wilson Roosevelt Jerman, a former longtime butler who worked in the White House, died May 16 following complications from the coronavirus. He was 91 years old. Jerman served 11 presidents, including Barack Obama, the nation’s first Black commander-in-chief.

Fox News reported that “Jerman worked at the White House from 1957 to 2012 as a cleaner, a doorman and butler.”

August:

Former Georgetown coach John Thompson, 78, the first Black coach to win the NCAA title, died Aug. 30. Thompson -- for which no cause of death was immediately given -- had retired in May from the Nike Board of Directors.

Actor Chadwick Boseman (lower right), who inspired millions as a superhero in the iconic movies, “Black Panther” and “42” in which he portrayed baseball legend Jackie Robinson, passed away on Aug. 28 after a four-year battle with colon cancer. He was 43.

September:

Former Temptations singer Bruce Williamson,49, a former lead singer with The Temptations R&B group, from COVID-19 on Sept. 6. Bruce, who joined the band in 2007, died at his home in Las Vegas.

Pamela Hutchinson, 61, a singer in the R&B trio The Emotions, died on Sept.18 at the age of 61. TV One reported that she died following “health challenges she’d been battling for several years.”

Lou Brock, baseball legend, 81, stole the second-most number of bases during his legendary career that spanned nearly two decades and included leading the St. Louis Cardinals to two World Series championships in the 1960s, died Sept. 6.

December:

Olympic gold medalist Arnie Robinson Jr., died at home on Dec. 2 in San Diego, according to The New York Times. He was 72. His son confirmed with the outlet that his death was the result of the coronavirus.

He was described as “one of the greatest long jumpers in history.”

Rev. James L. Netters Sr. died on Dec. 13, according to the Associated Press. He was 93.

Gale Sayers (right), former Chicago Bears star and NFL football legend died at the age of 77 on Sept. 23 after battling dementia since being diagnosed in 2013. He played for the Chicago Bears from 1965-71 after setting records at the University of Kansas and earning the nickname, the “Kansas Comet.”

Country music superstar Charley Pride, the nation’s first Black country music superstar revered for his smash hit, “Kiss an Angel Good Morning,” died on Dec. 12. He was 86. The Mississippi native passed away due to complications from COVID-19.

Sylvester Francis, cultural historian, 73, was the founder of the small but highly respected Backstreet Cultural museum that features an array of exhibits from various aspects of African American culture in New Orleans neighborhoods, died Sept. 2 at the age of 73.

Veteran actress Carol Sutton, whose most recent roles included appearances on the hit TV series “Queen Sugar,” died at age 76 on Dec. 10 from complications of COVID-19.Sutton, who played the role of Aunt Martha on the OWN series, had been hospitalized in New Orleans where she lived.

October:

Tommy ‘Tiny' Lister who played the felon neighborhood bully Deebo in the 1995 film, “Friday,” and its “Next Friday” sequel, died Dec. 10 at age 62. Lister was reportedly found dead Thursday at his apartment in Marina Del Ray, Calif., after friends’ attempts to contact him failed and a wellness check was issued.

Actor Thomas Jefferson Byrd, passed away on Oct. 3. Byrd, who played in several of director Spike Lee's films, was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a play for his performance in the 2003 Broadway revival of “Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.”

Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings, the powerful House Democrat died on Oct. 17 at the age of 68 at Gilchrist Hospice Care. A member of the Democratic Party, Cummings previously served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1983 to 1996.

Johnny Nash, chart-topping singer, 80, whose smash hit song, “I Can See Clearly Now,” went on to become a worldwide anthem, died from natural causes Oct. 6 at the age of 80.

November:

Former NYC Mayor David Dinkins, New York City’s first Black mayor, solidly defeated Rudy Giuliani in the 1989 mayoral campaign. Dinkins’ death on Nov. 23 at his home from natural causes was reported just over a month following his wife Joyce’s passing at age 89.

Natalie Desselle-Reid (left), 53, passed away on Nov. 7 after a private battle with cancer. The beloved actress starred in a variety of Black films and television shows including “How to Be A Player,” “Eve,” and “Madea’s Big Happy Family.” However, it was her role as “Mickey” in “B.A.P.S.,” that made her a Black cultural icon.

Bobby Brown Jr., 28, the son of the R&B icon, found dead at age 28 on Nov. 18. Police say that Brown’s death at a home in Encino, Calif. was not related to foul play.

Marcus Garvey Jr., the namesake son of the famed pan-Africanist who started the Universal Negro Improvement Association and the Back to Africa movement, died Dec. 8. He was 90 years old.

Civil rights activist and noted Memphis Pastor, Rev. James L. Netters, died on Dec. 13 at age 93. Netters was one of the activists who helped lead the sanitation workers strike with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as sit-ins, marches and protests. His cause of death was not immediately known.

Netters served for over 60 years as the pastor of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Bishop Harry Jackson Jr. who served as an evangelical advisor to President Donald Trump, passed away on Nov. 9. While the cause of Jackson’s death remains unknown, he had attended a White House garden party at which coronavirus protocols were not widely observed. Jackson died at age 66.

Bruce Carver Boynton, a respected civil rights activist and Alabama-based lawyer, died of cancer on Nov. 23 at the age of 83. In 1958 while he was a law student at Howard University, Boynton stopped in bus stop restaurant in Richmond, Virginia, where he refused to exit a “whites-only” area after attempting to purchase a sandwich.

Ben Watkins, 14, who captured America’s heart as a contestant on “MasterChef Junior,” a reality-based cooking contest TV show, died Nov. 16. He was just 14 years old. Watkins suffered from a rare form of cancer called Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma that results in soft tissue tumors. He was diagnosed last year.

Drew Days III, a legal scholar who broke barriers during his career as a lawyer and college professor over the course of more than four decades, died Nov. 15. He was 79 years old. The Alfred M.
