Tanzanian Presidential Candidate Promises Economic Reform in Zanzibar

Before thousands of Zanzibaris at Kibanda Maiti grounds in Unguja, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the Zanzibar ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi’s presidential candidate, kicked off his election campaign Saturday with a pledge to carry out economic reform and provide ongoing support for the union between the semiautonomous island of Zanzibar and the Tanzanian mainland at a campaign rally. The campaign was launched following the nominations of 17 presidential candidates by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission. Aspects of the economic reform include increasing the scope of revenue collection and jobs in the Isles. Mwinyi also plans to stimulate economic growth via an increase in the annual number of tourists from 500,000 to 850,000.

He also promised to build a small port as a step toward reinforcing the fishing industry as well as facilitating access to employment for Zanzibaris through gas and oil investments — with the added potential for productive deals in the sector.

Mwinyi also seeks to construct modern ports at Maruhubi and implement the construction of roads and airports as measures to stimulate economic growth.

An extra push will be for the construction of factories in Unguja and Pemba whose production activities will employ locally-sourced raw materials and create numerous job openings for the youth on the Isles. WI

CARIFESTA XV in Antigua and Barbuda Postponed Until 2022

The Caribbean Festival of Arts, or CARIFESTA, the region’s premier cultural festival, which was scheduled to be held in Antigua and Barbuda in August next year, has been postponed to August 2022. Daryll Matthew, minister of Sports, Culture, National Festivals, and the Arts of Antigua and Barbuda, announced the decision on Oct. 8 at a virtual meeting of the Regional Cultural Committee, CARICOM Today reported. The committee comprises directors of culture from the 20 member states and associate members of CARICOM, as well as members of the Interim Festival Directorate for CARIFESTA. Matthew indicated at the meeting that preparations had already commenced in earnest with the establishment of the CARIFESTA Secretariat and a Host Country Management Committee that had been carrying out their mandate with “enthusiasm, zeal and purpose.”

“CARIFESTA provides a platform for our region to showcase to the world the unrivaled prowess of our people,” he said. “As such, Antigua and Barbuda is eager to welcome our Caribbean brothers and sisters to our shores as we demonstrate to the world our capacity for innovation and creativity as we stage this very unique festival.”

In replying to the minister’s announcement, Dr. Douglas Slater, assistant secretary-general in charge of human and social development at the CARICOM Secretariat, expressed CARICOM’s appreciation for Antigua and Barbuda’s enthusiasm and commitment to hosting CARIFESTA XV and support for the decision to postpone the festival. request a mail-in ballot if done before the deadline on Tuesday, Oct. 20. She said voters should receive a ballot prior to Election Day.

Registered voters such as Artis Watkins of District Heights drove to Largo and placed his ballot inside the dropoff box. As of Thursday, he joined more than 236,00 residents who have requested mail-in ballots.

“I came up here to drop mine off because I don’t trust the [Trump] administration with my mail,” he said. “The ballot was easy to fill out, drop off and to choose [Democratic presidential nominee] Joe Biden.”

As of 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, about 11.9 million voters have cast early ballots nationwide, according to the United States Election Project managed by University of Florida professor Michael McDonald. However, just four years ago, the presidential election, as of Oct. 16, only recorded 1.4 million early votes cast.
