Pro-Palestinian Protest Brings Thousands to White House Barrington M. Salmon WI Staff Writer@bsalmondc Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched to the White House on August 2 to express their outrage against Israel’s most recent military offensive in Gaza. The vast crowd, many wearing the red, black, green and white colors of the Palestinian flag, spilled out of Lafayette Park and packed the plaza in front of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. They called for peace and an end to the fighting in Gaza. A coalition of Arab-American, Muslim and anti-war groups organized the “Stop the Massacre in Gaza” National March. Organizers estimated that about 50,000 people took to the streets. At the demonstration’s conclusion, the crowd marched to the Washington Post and laid mock coffins in front of the building. President Barack Obama has vigorously supported Israel’s right to defend itself while criticizing the number of civilian deaths. He didn’t see the protests because he was off playing golf and spending time at Camp David. Since June 8, the Israeli military has killed 1,700 Palestinians, mostly civilians and injured more than 9,000. Sixty-six Israelis have died in the conflict, all but two

FLASHBACK

In recognition of The Washington Informer’s 50th Anniversary in October 2014, we are looking back at some of the newsworthy moments we covered in D.C. history. In 1985, Zenani Mandela Dlamini, the eldest daughter of South Africa president Nelson and Winnie Mandela, cheers after receiving a donation of $6,750 from 14 U.S. senators, including Sen. Howard Metzenbaum (D-Ohio), for the reconstruction of her mother’s fire-bombed home and medical clinic. At a press conference held on Capitol Hill, Sen. Metzenbaum, said, “Americans of all political views have a deep sense of hurt and empathy” with the people of South Africa. /PNW-WI Archives

MENTORS continued from Page 4 nation’s capital for the very first time. “My pastor is my role model and he says that our actions, including working hard in school, show others who we really are,” said Michael Floyd, a seventh grader in Tavares, Florida, a city just north of Orlando. “I’d like to be in the NBA one day but if that doesn’t happen I’ll be prepared to develop computer programs,” said Michael, 12, who has eight brothers and three sisters. One of the boys said that since joining the mentoring group, his grades have improved and he’s started to believe that there’s brighter future in store for him. “At first I didn’t want to be in the program because I thought it was dumb but then I saw how our mentors care about us – they don’t want us on the streets or in jail,” said Ty’reek Waters, a ninth grader in Tavares, Florida and

Michael’s older brother. “D.C. and Baltimore are so different from my own city. The best thing has been visiting places that I had only seen on television,” said Ty’reek, 15. Mentors make a difference in the lives of young people who have had few positive role models to encourage them. One chaperone on the trip said he supports taking at-risk youth into more positive environments. “We have 17 boys with us that we refuse to allow to become entangled in the prison industrial complex and by showing them a different way of life we want them to understand that they can do positive, powerful things with their lives,” said Hugh Brown, a Leesburg, Florida resident whose career has focused on developing programs for youth. “When we invest in young people’s lives we all benefit – we need to help them go to college not pay for them to be inmates,” said Brown, 44. his life matters because of the support he’s received from the group. “They make me feel like I’m special and the adults that tell us about their careers have encouraged me to go after my dream of becoming an FBI agent,” said Keyante Tumer, 17, an 11th grader at Leesburg High who lives with his grandparents. One middle school student said he learned a lot after visiting the National Air and Space Museum. “This trip helped me do research for school and for my own personal goals because I want to be a mechanic when I grow up,” said Nick Jones who lives with his grandparents in Lady Lake, Florida. “Our mentors tell us that we have to do things that will help us become better people, better men – every decision matters,” said Nick, 12. Black Facts August 7 1970 – Four people, including the presiding judge, are killed during a courthouse shootout in Marin County, California. A group of Blacks led by 17-yearold Jonathan Jackson stage an assault on the courthouse in a bid to free Jackson’s brother – famed Soledad Brother and militant activist George Jackson. Jonathan was among those who died. Professor and activist Angela Davis was charged with providing the guns for the bloody escape attempt but she would later be found not guilty. August 8 1865 – Explorer Matthew Henson is born in Baltimore, Maryland. Henson would become the first person to reach the North Pole on April 6, 1909. However, it was his boss Robert E. Perry who would receive widespread public recognition and a presidential citation for the feat. August 9 1936 – Sprinting sensation Jesse Owens wins a total of four Gold Medals at the Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Born in Lawrence County, Alabama, Owens gained international fame for his victories in the 100 meters, the 200 meters, the long jump and the 4x100 meter relay.

BUYING RECORDS

1987 – Wall Street attorney and financier Reginald F. Lewis completes the largest business acquisition ever accomplished by an African American when he purchases Beatrice Foods in a leveraged buyout for $985 million. Lewis died at the age of 50 in Manhattan of a cerebral hemorrhage related to cancer in 1993. Considered one of richest men and corporate takeover dealers, Lewis lived in New York and Paris. August 10 1981 – A nationwide African-American boycott of the

giant Coca-Cola products ends after the firm reaches an agreement with Jesse Jackson’s Operation PUSH. Coke agreed to pump at least $34 million into Black businesses and increase the number of African-American owned distributorships.

Reginald Lewis

August 11 1921 – Accomplished writer Alex Haley is born on this day in Ithaca, New York. Haley is best known for co-writing the “Autobiography of Malcolm X” and for “Roots” – a history of a Black family during slavery that became a major television series during the 1970s. Haley died in February 1992. 1965 – The largest, longest and possibly most destructive Black riot of the turbulent 1960s begins in Los Angeles, California. The Watts Rebellion lasted six days, caused between $35 million and $50 million in damages while leaving 34 people dead, more than 1,000 injured and nearly 4,000 arrested. It took place during a “long hot summer” when similar riots were taking place throughout the country. August 12 1890 – This is generally considered the day that the systematic and nominally legal exclusion of Blacks from the political life of the South began. It was the day that the Mississippi Constitutional Convention got underway. Barred by the 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution from excluding Blacks by race, the convention instead adopted a host of strategies including literacy or socalled “Education Tests” specif-

ically designed to prevent Blacks from voting. The tests required reading and proper interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. 1922 – Ophelia DeVore-Mitchell, the founding mother of African-American modeling, is born on this day in Edgefield, South Carolina. Her family would move to New York during the 1930s where she entered the Vogue School of Modeling at the age of 17. Known for her pioneering efforts in the fields of beauty, fashion and modeling according to the New York Amsterdam News, Devore-Mitchell was the first mixed race/African-American high fashion model in Harlem in the late 1940s. Devore-Mitchell died on February 28, 2014. August 13 1881 – The first African American nursing school opens at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. 1892 – The Afro-American newspaper is founded. The first edition is published in Baltimore, Maryland by John H. Murphy, Sr. The newspaper chain would publish papers in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Richmond, Virginia and Newark, New Jersey. It continues to publish today in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.WI

AROUND THE THE REGION REGION AROUND INTERVIEWS AND PHOTOS BY ELTON HAYES

VIEWP INT Mark Pettis Forestville, Maryland I hope two things come out of it: a second summit, and the ability for the United States to get leaders from the African nations to communicate with each other on their issues. Hopefully the summit can be a conduit to make this happen. I hope they see that with a little bit of unity, they can achieve more together. This initial summit has likely convinced the leaders that this is a good idea. Moving forward, I’m optimistic that they’ll work on putting together a more aggressive agenda with policies for the second summit.

Joann King Forestville, Maryland I believe this event – while being the first – will open the line of communications between the leaders of each country. It will also be good for people around the United States to see that Africa is not just this unknown, dark continent without culture. They will see that these countries produce leaders, as well. I hope there will be more summits, such as this one, as a result. It’s surprising that it has taken this long to come together.

THE FIRST U.S.-AFRICA SUMMIT CONVENED THIS WEEK IN THE DISTRICT. ABOUT 50 AFRICAN LEADERS ATTENDED THE HISTORIC CONFERENCE, AIMED AT STRENGTHENING ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL TIES BETWEEN THE U.S. AND AFRICA. WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE SUMMIT?

Noah Cherry Washington, D.C. I think it’s a good forum for leaders to come together and exchange information and find new ways to work together to bring unity to the continent. Hopefully they can build on the success of this first gathering, and ultimately bring in other world leaders to make things better. I think it will yield positive results.

Michael Brown Washington, D.C. I think this is a very positive idea and I hope it brings unity to all of the different African nations involved. I hope they can come up with good economic and environmental plans. I definitely think that this summit will lead to others. I’m very happy that they’re able to do this, but I’m a bit disappointed that the leaders from Sierra Leone and Liberia won’t be able to attend – especially since Liberia is like a little brother to the United States. I wish the presidents from those countries would have been able to attend.

James Wang Takoma Park, Maryland I hope there is increased cooperation in all aspects, including the economic and environmental arenas. I also hope the summit will provide greater awareness to this nation, and the world, of the issues that affect these African countries. I would love to see this summit lead to additional ones in the future.

NATIONAL SUMMIT continued from Page 1 be reduced and growth to average 5.4 percent.” “These will not be easy targets but with determination and hard work, we can make it.” Zuma, 72, who is serving a second five-year term as head of state, catalogued his country’s progress over the last two decades. “Our country has come of age in a very short time, but we have made enormous strides,” he said. Zuma said progressive and well-thought-out policies have seen results in the areas of housing, electricity and sanitation, with the number of South African citizens who live in extreme poverty dipping to 16 million. About 600 U.S. companies are investing in South Africa and this year, Zuma said, 130 foreign companies have entered the South African market for the first time or have increased investments. That translates to $8.2 billion, a 100 percent increase from 2012. The tax base has been expanded more than ten-fold, market capitalization has soared and his government

has tamed inflation, Zuma added. “South Africa is open for business,” he said. “… We look forward to the further expansion of trade and other investment opportunities with the U.S. and other key markets.” Zuma reiterated the determination that African problems be solved by African people. Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame agreed. “I think even through a partnership like this one, that this summit provides, Africa needs to continue building our capacity and strengthen our institutions to enable us to avoid over-dependence which has been there for too long,” he said during a panel discussion with Charlie Rose at the U.S.-Africa Business Forum. “But you have to avoid that by building capacity, cooperation and integration and people working together.” “We (must be) able to own up to our weaknesses, our mistakes and own up to our solutions and contribute to our solutions. We can’t even tell our story. We even depend on others to tell our stories which leads to distortions. This is an opportunity in front

of us to leverage this partnership and address particular problems.” The U.S.-Africa Summit, held August 4-6, is seen by Obama as a critical first step to bring all the players on the continent together, discuss core issues like trade, commerce, peace and security but also to delve into corrup-

tion, democracy, the role of civil society, and enhancing the ability of women to participate fully in each countries’ affairs. Throughout the confab, the specter of Ebola hung over the summit. The virus has broken out in three West African countries and so far, the epidemic has taken almost 800 lives and infected more

than 1,300 people. Obama said Africa presents tremendous opportunities for the U.S. What he didn’t say is that America is playing catch up. Africa, with its abundance of mineral and other resources, is the last frontier, which is why

SUMMIT continued from Page 8 China, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia and others are on the ground crisscrossing the continent, making deals and cashing in on the riches. California Congresswoman Karen Bass said total trade between the U.S. and Africa – $60 billion – is dwarfed by the amount of trade conducted by China and the European Union. The European Union transacted $200 billion in trade last year, while China, always searching for mineral resources across the globe, negotiated $170 billion in business. “The importance of this for America needs to be understood,” Obama said during an August 1 press conference. “Africa is one of the fastest-growing continents in the world. You’ve got six of the 10 fastest-growing economies in Africa. You have all sorts of other countries like China and Brazil and India deeply interested in working with Africa – not to extract natural resources alone, which traditionally has been the relationship between Africa and the rest of the world – but now Africa is growing and you’ve got thriving markets and you’ve got entrepreneurs and extraordinary talent among the people there.”

Obama said he’s had conversations over the last several months with a number of U.S. business people from some of the largest American companies in the world, and they said Africa is one of their top priorities. More than 90 American businesses and well over 100 of their African counterparts participated in the summit. “We want to do business with those folks, and we think

that we can create U.S. jobs and send U.S. exports to Africa,” he said. While the administration is approaching trade and commerce with Africa from the macro level, Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) said the city is working just below the ministerial level. “The theme of this summit is ‘Investing in the Next Generation.’ That’s what we’ve been trying to do with our Sister Cities program,” he said during an August 3 opening reception for heads of state at the Willard Hotel in Northwest. “… In addition to working with the people in the summit, we look forward to hosting you while you’re here.” The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., 72, said it’s about time the U.S. shifted its priorities. “Africa is no longer seen as a basket case but a bread basket,” he said following Zuma’s remarks. “It is the world’s most endowed region. There’s world competition for Africa’s resources. China has already invested heavily. The U.S. is joining.” According to published reports, during the Business Forum, private-sector companies announced an additional $7 billion in commitments to promote agricultural development in Africa as part of the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition. The Alliance, in its second year, is designed to bring socially responsible private investment to the African agricultural sector, encourage countries to implement sustainable agricultural reforms and create jobs. Guinea’s Foreign Minister

François Lounceny Fall captured the hopes of himself and fellow African leaders. “I think it’s a good opportunity for America and Africa to open a new chapter,” said Fall, who also briefly served as Guinea’s prime minister in 2004. “The most important thing is to be good partners. We have many things to share. Africa is coming up in terms of democracy and development. We want America to invest in countries outside of South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya.”WI

D.C. Political Roundup By James Wright WI Staff Writer Bowser Celebrates Birthday with Supporters Hundreds of people showed up at the birthday party for D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) on Thursday, July 31 at the home of Daniel and Loretta Neumann Smith in Northwest. Bowser, 42, won the Democratic Party nomination for mayor of the District on April 1 and she used her birthday bash as a political fundraiser in the hopes of winning the Nov. 4 general election. Bowser thanked all of her supporters and reminded them why she should be elected mayor. “I will bring our sense of vitality and hope to the city,” Bowser said. “If I am elected mayor, I will be a regional leader, a national leader and a world leader that our city can be proud of.” The crowd nibbled on Chinese food and fruit and sipped various beverages as they talked politics while sitting in chairs on a perfectly manicured lawn or under a huge green canopy in the Smith’s backyard. A local band provided jazz musical selections for entertainment. D.C. Council members Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5), Anita Bonds (D-At Large), Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7) and Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) attended the party. McDuffie made a major announcement when he addressed the gathering. “Tonight, I proudly endorse Muriel Bowser to be the next great mayor of the District of Columbia,” McDuffie, 38, said to thunderous applause. “I know our city will be in the hands of a trusted leader who will fight tirelessly for every resident in the District because I’ve seen it first-hand. Like me, Muriel was born and raised in Ward 5 and understands how important our good, middle-class Democratic values are; and wants to ensure that more Washingtonians can buy homes, educate their kids and continue to shape our city – just like our parents did.” D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray (D) didn’t attend the event but some of his former supporters stopped by. Former Gray supporters such as Ward 4 political icon Ethel Delaney Lee and past Ward 8 Council member Sandy Allen donned Muriel Bowser buttons. One of Gray’s strongest backers, Barry, hyped up the crowd during his remarks. “I am a longtime friend of Vince Gray’s,” said Barry, 78. “But after the The Washington Informer

primary, I called Muriel Bowser and told her that she has my undying support.” Barry noted that Bowser’s father, Joe, served as his Ward 7 coordinator in his successful 1978 run for District mayor and that he thought that Bowser would be a great mayor. A number of candidates for elected offices also showed up including Lorie Masters and Edward “Smitty” Smith for attorney general; Ward 1 D.C. Council member Democratic nominee Brianne Nadeau; W. Philip Thomas for the Ward 3 Board of Education position; District Statehood Representative hopeful Franklin Garcia; independent D.C. Council at-large candidate Eric Jones; and Ward 8 advisory neighborhood commissioner 8C04 contender Markus Batchelor. Political activists and leaders who are considering council bids in the future such as Walter J. Garcia II, an advisory neighborhood commissioner for 7C04 and entrepreneur and political activist A.J. Cooper, who lives in Ward 4, networked and both talked about their qualifications at the party. The appearance of nationally-known motivational speaker Willie Jolley surprised many at the evening soiree. Jolley, who doesn’t generally attend political events, said he

wouldn’t have missed Bowser’s birthday celebration or the opportunity to lend his support. “I am a Ward 4 resident and Muriel Bowser is my council member,” said Jolley, 57. “I think she will do a great job as mayor.” Bonds Sponsors Crime Solvers Bill D.C. Council member Anita Bonds (D-At Large) wants criminal defendants to pay for their crimes not only by serving time in a correctional institution but by coughing up cold, hard cash. Bonds, with the support of D.C. Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8), has sponsored the “D.C. Crime Solvers Act of 2014” that would assess financial penalties to people who are convicted of crimes other than for traffic, parking or vehicle registration offenses to support the city’s Crime Solvers program. “The Crime Solvers Bill will provide resources devoted to educating and reward the community that forwards relevant information in solving crimes,” said Bonds, 68. “Likewise, the bill extracts a small fee from those convicted. Therefore, the bill is of no cost to the taxpayer.”WI

Back-to-School Basics: Vaccinations and Backpacks Submitted by AmeriHealth District of Columbia (DC)

Make sure that vaccinations (shots) are on your back-to-school checklist. It seems like the summer had just started, but now it’s time for back-to-school again. Students are going to need the basics: pens, pencils, glue sticks, a rubber eraser, highlighters, binders, pocket folders, notebooks, loose-leaf paper, a ruler and a backpack. But there is one last thing that sometimes gets overlooked. While you are gathering school supplies, make sure vaccinations are on your checklist. Students can always borrow a pencil from the teacher, but good health begins with vaccinations. Students’ minds are like sponges, soaking up all the knowledge they can. They study math and science every day. Children are also like sponges when it comes to germs and sickness in the classroom. Just like your child needed vaccinations after he or she was born, he or she also needs shots before starting school. It’s dangerous for children to attend school without being vaccinated — for themselves and others. All students must be vaccinated from certain diseases before the school year starts. This can help prevent them from catching several fatal diseases. Therefore, it’s important to get all necessary shots before the first day of school. In fact, there are laws in the District of Columbia (D.C.) that require certain vaccinations for children. You may never have heard of some of the diseases these vaccinations prevent. Some may seem to have been around only in your grandparents’ time. That’s a good thing — it means vaccinations are doing their job. They help keep diseases from spreading and growing. Before vaccinations were available, it was hard to prevent children from getting diseases, and some of them were fatal. Your child’s doctor will know which shots your child needs. Ask the doctor to explain each one. It will help you understand them. It can also make you more comfortable with the vaccinations.

...because I know my doctor and she knows me. AmeriHealth DC’s HealthCheck Program, provides the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) process, which helps your child get several important check-ups. If your child is an AmeriHealth DC member, he or she is a part of HealthCheck. This program starts at birth and continues until your child is 21 years old. Your child’s primary care provider (PCP) will provide or help your child get HealthCheck services. If you have questions about the shots your child needs, ask his or her PCP.

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY EDUCATION BRIEFS Compiled by Dorothy Rowley WI Staff Writer Transition, Orientation Days In preparation for the 2014-15 school year, school officials will host a transition day on Monday, August 25 for students entering the 6th and 7th grades, and high school students entering the 9th grade. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and students who ride buses will be picked up and dropped off at their regular time and bus stop locations. Orientation will be held for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students on Thursday, August 21 during programs at their respective schools. Staff will provide parents with a schedule of events. Support for New Teachers A kickoff of the “Peer Assistance and Review” program, which provides ongoing support to new teachers to ensure their future success in classrooms, took place the latter part of July. During a special breakfast program on July 30, schools staff and union representatives also welcomed 15 newly-hired consulting teachers to the program. Union Contracts The school system begins the new fiscal year, having successfully negotiated agreements with all four unions representing its employees. The recently-ratified union contracts represent a major collaborative effort between the schools and the Association of Supervisory and Administrative School Personnel, Prince George’s County Educators’ Association, Association of Classified Employees-AFSCME Local 2250, and Service Employees International Union (Local 400). “We were able to complete the negotiation process early because of our joint commitment to offering [our] employees fair and competitive wages and working conditions,” said Board of Education Chair Segun C. Eubanks. “In addition, these new contracts will have a positive impact on the recruitment and retention of high-quality staff.” Cost of Living Allowances Contracts for school administrators and central office staff in the Association of Supervisory and Administrative School PerThe Washington Informer

sonnel units 2 and 3 include a 2 percent cost-of-living allowance and step increase for Fiscal Year 2015. The contracts have also been ratified for a two-year term, and salary increases for Fiscal Year 2016 include provisions for raises as well, contingent upon available funding. Budget Provisions The updated schools budget from July includes funding for a pre-kindergarten expansion grant program, special education programs and construction of an international school. Funding has also been provided for other school capital improvement projects. “We have a bunch of schools that have significant needs,” Kevin Maxwell, schools CEO, said. “We have a $2.13 billion dollar backlog and each high school is in excess of $100 million of construction costs.”

New Pre-K Curriculum Frog Street, a leading provider of educational curriculum designed to enlighten and enrich the minds of children from ages 1 to 5, will partner with the schools system this fall to provide a pre-kindergarten curriculum for regular education and special-needs classrooms. Head Start classrooms in the county will also use the program. “Frog Street exists to enrich the lives of young learners and we are thrilled to partner with such a distinguished school district,” said Ron Chase, CEO of Frog Street. “We applaud Prince George’s commitment to their early childhood program, and we are committed to supporting the district and its teachers in the implementation of Frog Street Pre-K.” WI

County Moves Closer to Clinching FBI

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

Prince George’s County inches closer to becoming the new home of the FBI after elected officials announced two locations in the county have been included on a short list of sites for the bureau’s new base of operation. Locations in Greenbelt and Landover have been listed on the General Services Administration’s (GSA) roster of sites to serve as the future location. The GSA, which oversees administrative affairs for the federal government, announced the decision last week. In total, 12 sites throughout the region are being proposed as a possible location for the FBI’s headquarters. The GSA has now whittled that figure down to three, including one site in Springfield, Virginia. A decision is expected to be reached in the spring of 2016. The announcement has already caused Renard Development Co., a developer eyeing the Greenbelt site, to announce its proposal to build 1.6 millionsquare-feet of office space, retail, apartments, and a hotel. The development would include five large offices presumably occupied by the FBI. “It’s a game changing opportunity for the county,” said Victor Hoskins, an economic development advisor to County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D). “The benefit comes [with] 11,000 employees that will be consolidated into the county. There will be more retail customers consolidated into the area. It would draw additional jobs to the local economy – a lot of those people are going to want to live here.” County officials said that a large federal tenant like the FBI is sorely needed to help diversify the economy in the county. “This is like winning the primary – now we’re suiting up to win the general,” said U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski (D) of Maryland. “We want GSA to do its due diligence.” Mikulski joined a consortium of state and elected leaders including Baker, County Council President Mel Franklin (D-Dist. 9), U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D), and U.S. Representatives Steny Hoyer (D) and Donna Edwards

(D) during last week’s announcement. All said they had been working together to make Prince George’s County a strong candidate for the bureau’s relocation; in 2013, the Maryland Congressional Delegation sent a letter to both the GSA and FBI pledging their support for the FBI to relocate to the county. “We really had a united Maryland effort to bring the FBI to Prince George’s County,” Baker said. “We have some of the best sites in the Washington region … Prince George’s County is the place to be.” Currently located at the J. Edgar Hoover Building along Pennsylvania Avenue in Northwest where it has stood since the mid1970s, officials at the FBI have said it’s in need of a larger, more modern facility that would consolidate its 20 offices throughout the region into one location. The agency officially began searching for new sites last fall. Snagging the FBI would be a major coup for the county and state. The new FBI headquarters is estimated to be a $2 billion economic development project. According to a Maryland state report, approximately 40 percent of the FBI’s employees at the current headquarters already live in Maryland. The FBI would also generate an estimated $180 million in annual tax revenues for the state. But attracting the FBI and other government agencies to

www.washingtoninformer.com

the county has been frustrating for officials. Earlier this year, the group stressed the need for greater equity in the allotment of federal office space. While 25 percent of the region’s federal workforce lives in Prince George’s County, less than 4 percent of federal office space in the region is leased within the county. For years, the county had more metro stations than any jurisdiction in the region and the largest inventory of land that could be developed. The site in Greenbelt would sit near the Greenbelt Metro station adjacent to the Capital Beltway and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Developers have been circling the proposed site, which would require a 2.1 millionsquare-foot campus. The former site of Landover Mall also makes an appearance on the short list. The property recently competed to be the site of a new medical campus in Prince George’s County – it subsequently lost to a site near the Largo Town Center Metro station. “Both Greenbelt Station and Landover Mall are outstanding options,” said Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D). “Establishing the FBI headquarters at either site would provide phenomenal strategic advantages for the bureau, catalyze sustainable development and bring more jobs and vitality to Prince George’s County and Maryland.” WI The Washington Informer

Prayer Breakfast N

my parents pay, that you pay, finances this.” The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a tough, complex, multi-dimensional issue that has proved to be intractable. Previous wars and skirmishes with neighbors such as Syria and Egypt have sharpened Israel’s siege mentality. Israelis see themselves as being surrounded by many enemies in a hostile region. Much of Israel’s current actions are informed by the Holocaust and Nazi aggression during World War II. It doesn’t help that Hamas doesn’t recognize the state of Israel and one of its goals is to destroy it. Supporters of Israel point to the multiple times Israel has agreed to a ceasefire. Hamas has either rejected them or continued to fire rockets according to Israel. Neither side is blameless. Israel has been criticized for the proportionality of its response to the kidnapping of three Israeli teens in June. Without much evidence, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Hamas and the Israeli military began pounding Gaza. Whatever moral high ground Israel had has been seriously eroded because of the high civilian death count and United Nations’ (U.N.) assertions that the Gaza incursion and the seemingly indiscriminate bombings violate the U.N. and international law. Hamas, meanwhile, have been criticized by Obama for continuing to bomb Israel, thus putting Gaza citizens in harm’s way. The pretext for the Israeli incursion is to destroy the warren of tunnels used by Hamas to infiltrate Israel and bring needed items into the territory. Part of Israel’s mission we’re told is also to take out thousands of rockets and launching pads in and around Gaza. But the subtext is to also weaken and maybe destroy Hamas. But targeting women and children suggests a more sinister goal, several protesters said. “Israel is intent on destroying our next generation,” one man explained. “They are killing our women and children, bombing hospitals, the power plant and U.N. buildings though they say they’re targeting Hamas.” Israel’s supporters say if Israel wasn’t interested in peace,

it wouldn’t have unilaterally moved settlers out of Gaza. But those most critical of the Netanyahu regime look at the severe restrictions imposed on Gaza as evidence that Israel only seeks to repress and crush Palestinians. Israel has, since 2007, maintained an almost total blockade of Gaza. It has restricted access to food, water, electricity, gas, construction materials and other essentials. It also has rigorous control on border crossings and tightly regulates everything that flows into the territory. Israel also continues to build settlements on Palestinian land with impunity in violation of the Oslo Agreement. Eighty percent of Gazans are unemployed and fester in a place activist Angela Davis described as the largest open-air prison in the world. Gabby Churchman, a member of Northern Virginians for Peace and Justice, stood with three colleagues holding up a banner with the group’s name. A Quaker, Churchman said she’s opposed to all wars. “There’s a lot of killing going on largely as a result of U.S. arms dealing,” she said. “I’m a Quaker and I’m mostly against U.S. arms to the Middle East. Qatar gives arms to the Palestinians.” On July 15, the U.S. signed an $11 billion arms deal with Qatar and it recently gave Israeli soldiers access to U.S. stockpiles in Israel to further the Gaza bombardment. Churchman reflected the sentiments of many people. “Will this make a difference? No, I don’t think it will, but we do these types of things because it’s right.” Unfortunately, Churchman added, she sees no end to the Gaza conflict because it’s not in the interest of certain elements in the U.S. or the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) to do so. Longtime organizer James Harris agreed with Churchman. “Whether Obama’s listening or not isn’t the point,” the Northeast resident said. “Demonstrations have a certain symbolism but it’s people coming together, assessing their strengths, beginning to have discussions and figuring out how to build the movement. It doesn’t matter what the U.S. does, it will not be in the interest of Palestine or working people.”WI

Workforce Thrives with Older Americans: D.C. Office on Aging Encourages Candidates to Apply By John M. Thompson, Ph.D., FAAMA Executive Director, D.C. Office on Aging In this featured column, I would like to profile Mr. Shelton Roseboro, one of the District’s most amazing citizens who has benefited from the District of Columbia Office on Aging’s programs and services. In addition to telling you a little about Mr. Roseboro, I would like to increase the public’s awareness, including employers, about the benefits of hiring older adults. Shelton Roseboro is 58 years of age and spent 15 years working at the Library of Congress (LOC) as a microphotographer. In his position, he was responsible for photographing every piece of the library’s collection. You can imagine that with 15 years of experience, Mr. Roseboro became an expert in his job. As a microphotographer, he was a highly effective, dependable employee who performed his daily tasks with pride. In fact, the LOC honored Mr. Roseboro with two incentive awards: one for quality and one for quantity. For the quality award, he was recognized for producing 22,000 exposures in approximately four to five weeks with only two remakes. Yes, you heard it correct! He only made two mistakes out of a 22,000 item production. That is remarkable! For the quantity award, he produced 3,200 images in one day and the standard for production was 1,750. This is very impressive, as well! As the saying goes, “All good things come to an end.” Because of the technology age, the LOC went from microphotography to digitizing all of its collection. Subsequently, this led to a reduction in force and Mr. Roseboro being released from employment with the federal government. For the next 14 years, Mr. Roseboro was not in a career position, but instead, he took various jobs just to pay his bills. He worked jobs in security, retail, and transportation, which were totally different from his work with the Library of Congress. Fortunately, Mr. Roseboro connected with the Office on Aging in 2013 and I referred him to our Older Workers Employment and Training Program. After a short intake process, we put him in touch with our sister agency, the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO), under the leadership of Mr. Rob Mancini. At that time, OCTO was piloting an older workers employment program and was in search of potential candidates who wanted to return to work. The job duties consisted of managing the front desk, greeting customers, scheduling the use of their conference rooms, and addressing facility issues. In essence, these employees were to become the liaisons between the internal stakeholders, OCTO, and its external customers. Although Mr. Roseboro was excited about a fresh job opportunity, he was a bit reluctant to join OCTO because he was intimidated about using technology. However, he knew that this was his chance to return to government work and to be an asset to his employer. Today, Mr. Roseboro has been with OCTO for approximately 18 months and is thoroughly enjoying his job. In a recent conversation with Mr. Roseboro, I learned that he has become very comfortable with using technology as he has started his own blog and website and is now using Facebook and Twitter. It is very amazing to see how Mr. Roseboro has grown professionally and personally in the last 18 months. This is not only a win for him, but also for the government as he is giving the government his talent and strong work ethic. Older workers, like Mr. Roseboro, are a huge asset for their employers. Job Search Training Systems, Inc. revealed that workers 55 years of age and older have a higher motivation rate as compared to individuals 18 to 29 years of age. Moreover, older workers have longer work histories and performance patterns, which are useful for employers to check into their backgrounds. Having had more years in the work world, older workers are more experienced with problem-solving and decision-making and have other transferrable skill sets that are very beneficial to employers. If you are a senior and are looking for employment, you may be able to relate to Mr. Roseboro’s experience. I encourage you to connect with the Office on Aging’s Older Workers Employment and Training Program (OWETP) at 202-724-5626. If you are an employer seeking talented, experienced professionals, I urge you to connect with OWETP, as well. We have a number of older citizens seeking employment and I am confident that they can be an awesome addition to your team!

Africans Come to America As he winds through his second term with high “disapproval” numbers, Blacks are the only people President Barack Obama can turn to. As we enter August, a third of America’s voters think Obama is the worst president since World War II. Except for Blacks providing an upside, the first African-American president of the United States’ image is one of inexperience and ineptness. With his domestic and foreign policy portfolios both in tatters, Obama has turned to Blacks for support. This time it’s leaders from African nations that are “in good standing” with America. As he holds history’s first U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, Obama is hosting 50 African heads of state and more than 100 of their ministers. Recent domestic polls have Obama being viewed as “less competent” and “more dishonest” than George W. Bush. Obama’s approval rating among American registered voters stands at 45 percent, but among Blacks, his job approval soars to 86 percent. Almost nine out of every 10 African American would support Obama no matter what, no matter how far America sinks under his leadership, even if they have no jobs and their own lives are in shambles. Seventy percent of Africans say pretty much the same about Obama. The three-day Summit is the largest event any U.S. president has held with African heads of state and government. Those Africans coming to America for the Summit will be displaying the latest fashions, prints and styles of the continent. But, not much of substance is expected. It’s a “photo-op” to help Blacks, from here and there, feel good and in charge. Truth is, China, which devotes half of its $14.41 billion aid budget to its projects on the continent, regularly hosts individual African heads of state and has far outpaced the U.S. in trade and everything economic, in Africa. The structure of today’s trade relations

By William Reed between the U.S. and Africa is primarily dominated by fuel and fuel-related products. Colonialist countries exploited Africa for centuries. As “the Black President,” Obama gets a “pass” for America’s colonial practices, but little else. These days China is the “most dominate” foreign country in Africa. The Africans are being very polite in coming to America because little else will come of the occasion other than a “Polaroid moment.” Obama has a long way to go to put America on economic par with China among Africans. The African continent is home to more than a billion people that speak more than 2,000 languages. Only a few of Africa’s 54 leaders – Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe, who is still the target of U.S. sanctions and the Sudanese whom the U.S. bombed and assisted in the separation of South Sudan – were not invited to the Summit. U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman is hosting the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Ministerial at the World Bank. Obama’s Power Africa initiative is a key Summit issue item. “Power” is one of Africa’s most pressing challenges. According to the World Bank, only a quarter of sub-Saharan Africa has access to electricity and 10 percent per-year capacity growth is needed to meet electricity demand. A Summit Business Forum will be presented by the Department of Commerce and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs Committees will host a Capitol Hill welcoming reception. The key Blacks on African issues there are U.S. Rep. Operation HOPE Educates Community on Money Management

“How the Poor Can Save Capitalism,” and said financial literary remains part of an untapped but needed resource for many Americans, particularly blacks. “When Andrew Young, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others took up the Poor People’s Campaign [December 1967] 100 years after Lincoln’s failed efforts, their goal was to show those in poverty how the [financial] system works – blacks never got the memo,” said Bryant, a native of Los Angeles, California who dealt with homelessness during his teen years. “We’re going to grow HOPE Inside locations in rapid pace and plan to have 1,000 nationwide in banks like SunTrust by the year 2020. We’ll have another 2,000 in schools.” The two newest D.C. locations, in Northwest and Southeast [Anacostia] both offer services on properties adjacent to SunTrust branches. The bank becomes one of only a handful of financial institutions that have chosen to leverage their branch network in support of financial literacy. “We’ve partnered with John in other programs and so combining efforts and staff members for this new initiative was an easy decision for us to make,” said Scott Wilfong, chairman, president and CEO of the Greater Washington and Maryland Region,

SunTrust Bank. “Financial literacy training, learning the rubrics on how to become a successful entrepreneur, credit management and how to purchase a home are skills that we know are needed in many communities. But with the right tools, anyone can move up the economic ladder and become self-sufficient. It starts one person at a time,” said Wilfong, 64. Bryant said that with greater financial literacy, he hopes to shutter liquor stores, check cashing businesses and pay day loan companies that exist in black communities and replace them with convenience shops and other cash making enterprises. “We have to create a new norm in black and poor neighborhoods,” Bryant said. “Blacks have allowed themselves to be hijacked by today’s culture and environment so that dumb has become the new sexy. But with a bit of financial education, we can change that.” Wilfong said partnering with programs like Operation HOPE make sense because everyone wins. One man from Southeast took advantage of the services provided by Bryant’s nonprofit and found great success. “I wanted to become a homeowner and got needed lessons on mortgages and what to expect as a first-time home buyer,” said Warren Gilchrist, who shared his story during the HOPE Inside event. “I’m still connected with and close to my mentor who works for Operation HOPE and have become both a participant of and advocate for the work that Mr. Bryant and his organization do.” Gilchrist added more to his testimonial. “It may be hard to believe, but I first heard about their efforts while shooting hoops with some friends and I have to admit, I’m very glad I listened,” said Gilchrist, 26, who closed on his home in Bowie, Maryland on April 29 and recently became engaged. WI

Summit planners say the discussions will encourage progress in areas that Africans define as critical for the continent’s future: “expanding trade and investment ties, engaging young African leaders, promoting inclusive sustainable development, expanding cooperation on peace and security, and gaining better futures for Africa’s next generation.”

“Everyone must understand that Africans aren’t looking for people to save them, but for people to partner with,” says Melvin Foote, head of the U.S.-based Constituency for Africa.WI William Reed is publisher of “Who’s Who in Black Corporate America” and available for projects via the BaileyGroup.org

New Partnership with SunTrust Bank Brings Needed Services to D.C. By D. Kevin McNeir WI Contributing Writer The need for greater financial literacy has become apparent, particularly in these days where outsourcing, layoffs and bankruptcies have become more commonplace. Perhaps that’s why hundreds gathered at a local bank branch in Northwest last Wednesday to hear about a unique partnership between a financial institution and one of the nation’s most successful nonprofit organizations. The program, HOPE Inside, offers a host of financial services that according to Operation HOPE founder, chairman and CEO, John Hope Bryant, seek to make individuals feel greater self-esteem. “What we’re doing is not so much about providing education and assistance as it relates to financial management as it is about finishing the work that was started by President Abraham Lincoln when he set up the Freedman’s Bank in 1865,” said Bryant, who started his nonprofit company, Operation HOPE, in 1992 in Los Angeles shortly after riots broke out in the city. “Lincoln knew that freed slaves needed help learning about capitalism and tapping into the system of free enterprise after centuries of dependent bondage. That’s what this program aims to accomplish,” said Bryant, 48. During the announcement on July 30, Bryant shared complimentary copies of his new book,

Cure for Hepatitis C an Open Secret Officials: African-American Baby Boomers Need Educating By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer Psst. It’s an open secret. There’s a cure for hepatitis C, the contagious liver disease that ranges in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, lifelong illness that attacks the liver. “Today, what many people don’t know is that there is a cure. You don’t have to live and die with hepatitis C. You don’t have to get liver disease, you can be cured,” said Pernessa Selle, founder and CEO of the Balm in Gilead, a Richmond, Virginia-based nonprofit which seeks to prevent diseases and to improve the health of individuals disproportionately affected by high rates of health disparities, particularly HIV, cervical cancer, sexual violence

and hepatitis C. Selle, 59, led state and community leaders at a town hall action forum on hepatitis C on July 29 at the Sanctuary at Kingdom Square in Capitol Heights, Maryland. The event also featured Grammy-winning gospel artist VaShawn Mitchell. “It’s the first stop on a tour that we’re taking to Chicago on August 14 to educate people,” said Selle, who has worked with three presidential administrations on issues relating to HIV/ AIDS in the United States and abroad. Selle has been featured on the cover of Time magazine as one of the most influential individuals in the world. “We must help people, particularly baby boomers, know that there’s a cure,” she said. “I have not spoken to

anyone outside of the public health arena who knew the facts about hepatitis C. In fact, I was just speaking with a colleague of mine, who is a Ph. D., a well-educated individual who is in her 60s and she’s never heard the statistics. There are masses of people who don’t have a clue as to what’s going on.”

The Washington Informer

Unfortunately for some, there’s an ongoing belief that ignorance counts as bliss, she said. A recent survey of local baby boomers, those born between 1945 and 1965, revealed that 40 percent of that group would rather admit to driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances than to having hepatitis C, which counts as the leading cause of death among African-American baby boomers, based on statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. For their survey, CDC officials asked baby boomers about their knowledge and perceptions of the disease, a viral illness that leads to inflammation of the liver. The survey found that 62 percent of Washington, D.C. baby boomers have never been tested for the disease despite the CDC’s recommendations and, most recently, on June 25, the United States Preventive Services Task Force also published recommendations that all baby boomers get tested. “There are nearly 1.5 million people in the U.S. who don’t know they have hepatitis C and there are likely thousands in Washington, D.C. who aren’t aware they are infected,” said Dr. Vinod Rustgi of the Metropolitan Liver and Gastro Center in Fairfax, Virginia. Rustgi said about 60 percent feel that they are at risk while the CDC reported that baby boomers are five times more likely than other age group to have the illness. He said one in two District baby boomers think that those with the disease are at fault. “What we hope is that more people will be educated about this,” Selle said. “And, when we come back and do this forum again we’ll have the testimony of those who have been tested and treated and cured.” Officials at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Frederick, Maryland, said those most at risk are in-

dividuals who inject street drugs or share a needle with someone who has hepatitis C. Also, those at risk include, individuals who have been on long-term kidney dialysis; have had regular contact with blood at work; have unprotected sexual contact with a person with the disease; were born to a mother who has hepatitis C; received a tattoo or acupuncture with needles that have not been properly disinfected; and those who maybe recipients of an organ transplant, shared toothbrushes, razors or other items with an infected person or have received a blood transfusion. Symptoms of the disease may include the yellowing of the skin or jaundice, dark urine, fatigue, fever, itching, nausea and vomiting, and the loss of appetite. Doctors usually perform genetic testing which could include albumin level and liver function tests and a liver biopsy. Selle said there’s lots of work to be done to educate everyone about hepatitis C. She said the July 29 town hall event helped to launch the Balm in Gilead’s National Healthy Churches 2020 campaign, during which the organization plans to host forums on hepatitis C in Chicago and Jacksonville, Florida. “So many times we come out as a public health people and we talk about marginalized folks; the drug addicts and those with HIV/AIDS,” she said. “I want to get beyond that. The majority of those with hepatitis C are born baby boomers, they’re not gay; they’re not drug addicts. They are folks walking around every day and it’s important that we educate our community because folks don’t have to have hepatitis C.” WI

Welcome Africa

All week, Washington, D.C. has been Africa Central, as dozens of African leaders are in town for meetings with President Barack Obama. The U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit is the first event of its kind, the largest gathering any American president has held with African heads of state and government. The real Africa rarely makes the news in Western media unless it’s about malnutrition, the Ebola outbreak, coups or natural disasters. But there’s a great deal of good going on across this vast continent of 54 nations. While much of the world has been mired in the economic doldrums, Africa’s economy as a whole has been growing at a 5 percent clip for the past several years. Innovation is popping up everywhere and young people, especially are making their marks in business, technology, the arts and politics. Africa, with its abundance of mineral and other resources, is the last frontier, which is why China, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia and others are flocking there seeking to cash in on the riches. The United States is playing catch up. As Rep. Karen Bass noted recently, there’s a huge gap in total trade with Africa when the U.S. is compared to some of its counterparts. Currently, that stands at $60 billion, while the European Union transacted $200 billion in trade last year. China, in a global search for resources, negotiated $170 billion in business. The Obama administration seeks to strengthen ties that it acknowledges is one of the world’s most dynamic and fastest growing regions and the Summit will focus on trade and investment in Africa. Both sides come to the table with clear needs. African countries lack the broad technical know-how and expertise commonplace in developed countries, but they have the workforce and resources the U.S. sorely needs. America, in search of new markets, can benefit because of a burgeoning middle class in all corners of the continent that wants all the amenities a middle- and upper-class lifestyle demands. We hope African leaders come to the table as equal partners and aren’t here to be lectured to or told what America wants. We hope, too, that in their discussions with Obama these leaders won’t give away their considerable resources for little or nothing. Africans have enormous leverage because the U.S. has what they need. This reality should enable African leaders to negotiate smart, sensible deals that fully benefit their citizens back home.

DC Gun Ban

It’s anyone’s guess if at the end of this latest hand gun saga, D.C. residents and visitors will be free to carry handguns in public. The odds, however, seem tipped heavily in favor of those seeking the right and freedom to carry. Federal Judge Frederick Scullin’s 90-day stay last week means that the gun ban is back in place as elected officials decide if they’ll attempt to fashion a law that conforms to the judge’s ruling. In the meantime, Police Chief Kathy Lanier has cautioned the police force to tread very carefully as members go about protecting the city and its residents. We would tend to agree with Allison Anderman of the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence that all citizens are law abiding until they commit a crime. Two of many pertinent questions to ask include if this change could further endanger the president, Congress and other elected officials. And if people begin carrying guns in public, will we begin to see more misunderstandings or misplaced fears play out in a deadly fashion between seemingly law-abiding people and those they fear, like teenagers Jordan Davis and Trayvon Martin? Some experts and gun advocates pooh-pooh the notion, but in a country where race often provokes such unfounded fears, this is cause for concern. We pray fervently that we’re wrong.

20 Aug 7 - Aug 13, 2014

Remember Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis

Your article, “Judge’s Ruling Upends D.C. Gun Ban,” by Barrington Salmon [July 31, 2014 edition] is just another sign of the gentrification process taking place in Washington, D.C. For almost 40 years while the city was majority black it was almost impossible to own a gun in the District of Columbia. Now that whites are moving back into the city, spending outrageous amounts of money for houses, all of a sudden the law of the land feels the need for them not only to own guns but they need to be able to carry them in public to show their power. Individuals who carry guns in public are trying to psychologically intimidate those around them who do not have guns, nothing more. I am in complete favor of being able to own a gun, but toting them around in public is something completely different. Those who carry guns in public think they have the right to use them when they feel they need to, not when the law gives them the right to. It’s shoot first, then let the law figure out who was right or wrong. Let’s not forget what happened in Florida where similar gun laws allowed young black men to be shot down for eating Skittles and playing loud music. Harold W. Ferguson Washington, D.C.

Wonderful Book Reviews!

I want to thank the Informer for bringing to my attention the book, “Risking Everything: A Freedom Summer Reader,” edited by historian Michael Edmonds and reviewed in your July 24-30 edition by Terri Schlichenmeyer. The book documents the 1964 Freedom Summer project that involved civil rights workers and other volunteers who traveled to Mississippi to fight segregation. Being a history buff whose interests lie in the contributions made to this country, through the blood, sweat and tears of African Americans, I was elated to discover the book and immediately ordered a copy. Please keep up the good work of educating and informing the community, and I look forward to “stumbling across” other great reads among your book reviews.

fact that the president of AFSCME was wrong to end its relationship with the UNCF just because it accepted money from the Koch brothers. Yes, the Koch brothers are rich and conservative and they support a number of conservative groups, but that’s their right, and that’s a whole different story. The money they gave was to support scholarships at the UNCF, and even if it’s for some conservative scholarship, that’s fine; it’s educating young minds. There are black conservatives out here, poor young black conservatives that need help getting an education. Education is the key; if you are educated you have a better chance of being able to understand why one chooses to become a conservative or a liberal. I sincerely hope the president of AFSCME reconsiders his decision and reinstates the union’s relationship with the UNCF. Benjamin King Washington, D.C.

Terrorism and Security in Africa: A Global Challenge Security threats have continued for more than a decade, despite their recent decline, to remind us that the fight against terrorism and organized crime requires constant vigilance. The African Leaders Summit is an opportunity for African leaders and the US to discuss this issue collectively and acknowledge and deepen US engagement. Recent events from Mali to Sudan, Libya to Nigeria, Kenya to Somalia

indicate that this must be addressed as a global issue to sustainably contain and overcome it. Indeed, we are at a historical crossroads in Africa if we want to secure peace and stability for the next generation. Securitizing Development The persistence of such evils in our sub-region imposes on us an even bigger challenge, in addition to the already difficult development issues and the fight against poverty. There is a close relationship between secu-

rity and development which are, each to the other, mutual prerequisites: there is no development without security of persons and property, nor is there viable security without effective development. This dual challenge of securitizing development confronts us today. The devastating consequences of insecurity in the Sahel are clear and obvious without the need of any historical narrative. not overshadow the reality of progress. We must highlight the liberation and the return to constitutional order in Mali, and we can rejoice but must remain vigilant. During the painful events that this sister country went through, we have, like our other Sahelian brothers, ECOWAS and the African Union, supported all efforts to resolve the crisis. In Mauritania, we successfully ensured the absolute inviolability of our territory by armed bands seeking fallback territories and welcomed tens of thousands of

Malian civilians peacefully. A Global Approach with Local Leadership for Resolute Success The renewed freedom of Mali today must, first, be applauded thanks to the extraordinary selflessness of Malians and, second, to the support of sister and friendly states. The commitment for the joint troops mobilized by Sahel countries deserves to be particularly recognized. History

Democrats’ Try Gimmicks to Reach Black Voters In 1984, former UN Ambassador Andrew Young described the inner circle of Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale as “smart a– White boys” who thought they knew everything. Obviously, they didn’t because Mondale lost the general election by a large margin to Ronald Reagan. Knowing that in a president’s second-term, the party in power usually loses 29 House seats,

along with the real possibility of Democrats losing control of the Senate this year, some party leaders are trying to give the appearance they are in control and Democrats will buck that historical voting trend. In an interview with a group of African American reporters last week, for example, Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, described how much better positioned Democrats are this year

compared to past off-year elections. He spoke of the DCCC hiring a diversity director for the first time, adding a national voter training director, creating an Internet platform for vendors of color and allowing resumes to be dropped off in the field. The upcoming mid-term election may be yet another example of Black voters never getting the credit they deserve winning seats for the party but getting an overabundance of blame when Democrats get their heads hand-

ed to them. In the meeting with reporters, Israel mentioned efforts from getting commercials cut by First Lady Michelle Obama to getting Black voters to sign cards committing them to vote in November. As Election Day nears, those cards will be mailed back to prospective voters, hoping that action will get them to turn up at the polls. The most troubling aspect of the exchange with Israel was that he appears to be putting more

faith in such long-shot gimmicks as voter commitment cards than reaching the Black community through the Black Press. In fact, when pressed on the issue of utilizing Black media, Israel said while there may be some Black media buys, “The vast majority of our budget is spent on one thing – that is buying television time. That’s it.” That may be “it” for Democrats in November if they think

of the African American struggle for justice. Actually, there is nothing new in this piece. Those who oppose justice for the Palestinians regularly drag out quotes from various historic African American leaders in order to attempt to make their case. While this may sway some people, it does not settle the matter of whether comparisons of the Palestinian situation and that of African Americans are legitimate. To consider such comparisons you have to look at a few things. Let’s start:

www.washingtoninformer.com

Beginning in 1947, Palestinians, including Christians and Muslims, were removed from land that they had inhabited for thousands of years. The Palestinians, by the way, had not just appeared in that portion of the Middle East in the recent past. It is now clear that, genetically speaking, the Palestinians have their roots in the ancient Hebrews. With the establishment of Israel in 1948, a dual system was implemented that, among other things, permitted the expropriThe Washington Informer

ation of Palestinian land for alleged security reasons. The land was not returned to the Palestinians. A dual educational system was established, with Palestinian citizens of Israel receiving inferior and poorly funded education. Israel has held onto land that it captured in the June 1967 war in violation of international law, resolutions and precedent. It then began a process of settling the land, again, in violation of international law. The Palestinians in the Occu

pied Territories have absolutely no security, with their homes subject to being destroyed or seized, and their land divided. The creation of the so-called Security Wall does not conform to the 1949 Armistice line but goes through Palestinian territory, frequently cutting off Palestinians from their own land. Palestinian citizens of Israel cannot settle in Israel with a Palestinian spouse who comes from the Occupied Territories.

African Leaders Summit in America The importance of President Barack Obama’s U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit held this week in Washington, D.C. should not be underestimated. This is historic event for all Americans, but especially for 45 million Black Americans who all are direct or indirect descendants from Africa. Because of the politically polarized atmosphere in Washington, D.C., whatever initiative

that President Obama attempts to launch is met with the usual conservative or racially-motivated attacks on his leadership, motives or accomplishments. Yet, the sheer magnitude of 45 to 50 African heads of state along with their respective ministers will indeed significantly improve the public perception in America about Africa’s past, present and future. But beyond helping to change some of negative stereotypes of Africa, the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit has the potential to pro-

vide new business opportunities. In fact there were multibillion dollar investment deals on the summit table for consideration. There were also summit-related opportunities to work on sustainable, collaborative business ventures, joint economic development projects, and increased international trade relationships with Africa. It would have been impressive if each Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) had been involved in the conference. According to a

statement issued by the White House, “This Summit, the largest event any U.S. President has held with African heads of state and government, will build on the President’s trip to Africa in the summer of 2013 and it will strengthen ties between the United States and one of the world’s most dynamic and fastest growing regions.” The theme of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit was “Investing in the Next Generation.” President Obama reiterated, “I do not see the countries and

peoples of Africa as a world apart; I see Africa as a fundamental part of our interconnected world – partners with America on behalf of the future we want for all of our children. That partnership must be grounded in mutual responsibility and mutual respect.” Of course mutual responsibility and respect must not just be something that lasts a few days in Washington. The real test will be what happens after each Af-

We Need to Fight for Equality Last week, I had the great honor to receive the Benjamin L. Hooks “Keeper of the Flame” Award from the Labor Committee of the NAACP’s Board of Directors. Both the new president, Cornell Brooks, and Lorraine Miller, who served as interim president before him, were present. I felt humbled by the honor. This is the 105th anniversary of the NAACP. The conference

was a constant reminder of the legacy of those who cut a long path in the fight for equality-not just racial equality-in America. But last year, this year and next also mark important 50-year anniversaries of the civil rights movement. Last year was the March for Jobs and Justice, this year was the Civil Rights Act and next year is the Voting Rights Act. But we should not forget that we also are marking the anniversaries of human sacrifice to justice. Last year, it was the assassi-

nation of Medgar Evers and four young girls, Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley, who were murdered when the 16th Street Baptist church was bombed in Birmingham, Ala., during church services. This year, it was James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, murdered for registering African American voters in Philadelphia, Miss. Next year, it will be to remember the campaign to register voters in Alabama, the Bloody Sunday attack

on marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Viola Liuzzo, who was murdered driving marchers for the march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala. It is important to note these events occurred when the NAACP was already more than 40 years in the struggle for justice. A solid reminder that this is a long struggle and it is marked with the blood and sacrifice of many. The labor luncheon at the NAACP convention is to rededicate the cooperation of two

movements with one goal. The labor movement has a long history of struggle as well, fighting for equality and human dignity. Dignity for many begins with dignity at work. I had a chance to hear from the Rev. William J. Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and a leader of the Moral Monday movement in North Carolina. He coined a new phrase to capture the attack on democracy in North Caro-

Republicans: Please Impeach President Obama Congress has taken its annual August, summer recess. In a last minute show of gumption, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives worked on into the night on immigration legislation which had zero (absolutely no) chance of becoming law, or in any way easing the crisis on the U.S. southern border. That’s because one day earlier, the Senate – which would have to agree to any bill

before it went to the President to sign into law – had already adjourned for five weeks until after Labor Day in September. To say that American leadership – Congress in particular – has “lost its way” is an understatement. They have fallen and cannot get up. But what’s worse is that these “leaders” actually reflect the views of their deaf, dumb, and dumber constituents. At this time, when the wealthiest 1 percent of the U.S. population has more than the poorest 90 percent, you would think the

public would be clamoring for relief. No! In fact, 97 percent of the poorest counties are in socalled “red states,” that is solid, conservative voting blocs. To say I see the picture, nothing these “Repugnicans” say or do makes even a batwing’s worth of sense to me: not concerning immigration, and deporting indigenous children out of the land these Caucasians stole from indigenous people; not concerning voting “rights,” or as they like to characterize it “voter fraud;” not concerning school loans or eduThe Washington Informer

cation funding; nothing, nothing they say makes any sense to me. Let’s take the education debate, for an example. This country now spends on average, about $8,000 per year, per child, educating children, and there is a big argument whenever school funding is on the public agenda. But these loony legislators are as pleased as punch when it comes time to authorize and appropriate on average $40,000 per year to house a prison inmate. That, as they say, is “counter-intuitive.” In addition, there are so many

guidelines and strings attached to education funding, related to tests and pupil outcome, they spend almost as much measuring that measly school funding as they spend on the funding itself. But there is absolutely no measurement or accountability whatsoever imposed on the prison system. Shouldn’t they be expected to make “better” inmates or something? No. The standard is, the drearier, the more miserable, the more punishing, the

By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer This lady doesn’t mind singing the blues. Kathy Sledge of the legendary soul group, Sister Sledge, will bring her Billie Holiday tribute show, “A Brighter Side of Day,” to the Blues Alley and Supper Club in Northwest for four performances on Friday, August 8, and Saturday, August 9. Each evening, Sledge will perform an 8 p.m. and a 10 p.m. show. “I’ve been told that I bring Billie Holiday to life on stage,” said Sledge, who along with her three sisters, Debbie, Joni, and Kim, recorded such iconic hits as, “We are Family,” “Lost in the Music,” and “He’s the Greatest Dancer.” “I want to portray Billie in a way that she’d be proud,” said Sledge, 55, who noted that the production has adopted the name, “A Brighter Side The Washington Informer

of Day,” to show the late Holiday’s outstanding attributes. “I feel that if we don’t tell the story of our icons, someone else will tell [those stories] and we won’t be so proud of [them]. I want to do Billie Holiday in a way that she’d be proud,” she said. As an example, Sledge said the pop icon Marilyn Monroe lived a very challenging life. “But, we’re not reminded of that side of her life, just the glamorous side,” she said. “I think that it is up to us to tell our own stories, of our great artists, and to lift them up for the legendary reasons that we know.” For the Holiday tribute, Sledge reached out to former Atlantic Records president Jerry Greenberg. “She just blew me away,” Greenberg told Billboard magazine. “We decided to form a partnership,” he said. Produced by Stanley Clarke, “A Brighter Side of Day,” takes au

diences on a musical journey of Holiday’s tumultuous life. Most importantly, it’s a tour de force that features such groundbreaking recordings as, “Lady in Satin,” “Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?),” “Strange Fruit,” and “God Bless the Child.” Born Eleanora Fagan in 1915, Holiday grew up in Baltimore and rose to fame in the 1940s and 1950s with a soulful, unique singing voice and the ability to boldly turn any material presented her into her own music. As a teenager, Holiday shared recording studios and the stage with Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. Performing in nightclubs in Harlem, New York, Holiday earned the nickname, “Lady Day.” She became one of the first black women to work with a white orchestra when she joined Count Basie in See BLUES on Page 24

continued from Page 23 1937 and, a year later, Artie Shaw. Despite her lack of technical training and her inability to write or read music, Holiday’s unique diction, inimitable phrasing and acute dramatic intensity made her the outstanding jazz singer of her day. Holiday died in 1959 at age 44. In 1972, Motown Records produced a feature film about Holiday titled, “Lady Sings the Blues.” The motion picture starred soul diva Diana Ross, actors Billy Dee Williams and the late Richard Pryor. The film received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress. At a young age, Sledge said when her mother took her to see the movie, it changed her life. She said everyone, including her family members, said she could imitate Holiday better than anyone else. During many of Sister Sledge’s shows, she’d perform a Billie Holiday routine. “Funny enough, twice the role of Billie Holiday fell into my lap. One time it went to someone else, but I did land the part of ‘Lady Day’ on Broadway, but another producer was brought in so that didn’t happen,” Sledge said. “In a way, I was OK with that because the script was so heavy.” Born and raised in Philadelphia, Sledge began belting out tunes at age 6. Along with vocal coaching and guidance from her grandmother, an experienced opera singer, Sledge’s instinctive ability came from her father Edwin Sledge, of the legendary Broadway tap duo, “Fred and Sledge,” and her mother, singer and actress Florez Sledge, she said. In addition to numerous performances for the congregation at her

local church, Sledge spent her elementary school years performing in clubs and at local talent shows. She and her sisters signed their first record deal with Atco Records, resulting in their first No. 1 hit, “Mama Never Told Me,” in 1973. They went onto record their second international hit, “Love, Don’t You Go through No Changes on Me,” which landed at the top of the Japanese charts. Following that success, Sister Sledge won the prestigious Silver Award at the Tokyo Music Festival. After meeting the sisters, legendary songwriters Niles Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote and produced, “We Are Family,” reflecting their real life family. The song and the album went onto reach the No. 1 position on every imaginable music chart and it earned a Grammy nomination. “We are Family” also became the

anthem and inspiration for the Pittsburgh Pirates World Series Championship in 1979, with the team inviting the sisters to celebrate their title. In 1992, Kathy Sledge signed with Epic Records as a solo artist. Her first album, “Heart,” featured the single, “Take Me Back to Love Again,” and the ballad, “All of My Love.” For the Blues Alley performance, Sledge said everyone can expect vintage Holiday music and reenactments. “We are going to set everything up at Blues Alley to take the audience back to the 1940s with white gardenias, which Billie Holiday wore in her hair and which became her trademark,” Sledge said.WI Tickets for the show are $30 and can be purchased at www.bluesalley.com.

You are entitled to change your mind. You don’t have to apologize or admit you were wrong. Just act on your new convictions and, sooner or later, someone will notice your different opinions, improved ideals, and open mind. For most of her life, author Zelda la Grange held beliefs that everyone around her shared. In the new book “Good Morning, Mr. Mandela,” she explains how those tenets changed, and who led her there. Though she was born into a “very poor” family, Zelda la Grange had it better than the black citizens of Johannesburg in 1970: as an Afrikaner “boere-meisie,” she enjoyed legal privileges that came with being white. “We were happy children growing up in apartheid South Africa,” she says, having been taught that blacks and whites never mixed. Blacks were “dangerous.” After receiving secretarial training, la Grange’s first job was with the South African government. It was a “riveting and dangerous” time then; apartheid had ended, whites feared black reprisals, and South Africa had inaugurated its first democratically-elected black president whose office happened to need a typist. Knowing very little about the man for whom she’d work, la Grange applied for the position. The first time she met her new boss, she cried. “It was all too much,” she says; perhaps because Nelson Mandela kindly addressed her in her “home language,” and not his own. Soon, Madiba (his clan name) began to

rely on la Grange for everything. She read to him, helped with speeches, traveled with him, soothed his temper, and protected his time. He called her on her phone, sometimes a hundred times a day. The “same man my Afrikaner compatriots warned me against” became like a beloved grandfather to her, and she fretted over his needs and his health until the end of his life, when his office closed, she was demoted, and was denied access to his sickroom. “I made a promise [to stick with him],” she says. “I was going to be there right to the end, even if it meant I had to stand at a fence outside his farm … when they laid him to rest. Unbeknown to me, that would be close to the truth.” We do love our saints, which is why “Good Morning, Mr. Mandela” is so interesting: author Zelda la Grange gives us a beautiful portrait of a beautiful man, but it’s a picture with surprising exposure. This intimate peek into Mandela’s persona starts out with la Grange’s biography, which stages where we’re going. Get past that, and the pay-off is rich: la Grange describes Mandela as having a keen sense of humor, but who sometimes engaged in mean-spirited teasing. He was generous with his time, but not always respectful of that of others. Mandela couldn’t say “no” to anyone, but was prone to fits of “furious.” In other words, human, which is what makes this book so enjoyable. Yes, “Good Morning, Mr. Mandela” has its first-time-author flaws and yes, it can be repetitive, but catch that hero-as-a-man facet, and I don’t think you’ll mind.WI

GEMINI Your ability to set preconceptions aside comes in handy. Your curiosity about a situation, another person, or yourself can be richly rewarded. Think things through and determine the real issue prior to speaking your mind. A mentor, a partner or a friend can help alter your perspective. Seeking multiple points of view is favored. The more you know, the more your own vision grows. CANCER A certain someone may seem cold as the week begins, but before you get miffed and tell them, consider maybe they’re just not as expressive as you. What seems like an instinct could be more of a knee-jerk, and perhaps oversensitive, reaction. Avoid assumptions – they could cause problems, while clarity could be a question or two away. LEO Save the power plays for an appropriate arena like work. It’s not so much about getting ahead; concentrate more on exploring the unknown and finding a fresh perspective. A certain someone may be a little touchy-feely or wishy-washy, but be gentle – there’s likely more to this situation than meets the eye. The more oddball things you try and weird people you meet, the happier you’ll be. VIRGO Renovations and innovations are favored in all aspects of your life, so make some changes, major or minor. Don’t forget to spend some downtime in your comfort zone. Re-evaluate existing projects, relationships and so forth. Money counts and you may be counting yours – or counting on someone else to do their financial part. Give these matters due consideration in a timely fashion. LIBRA Balance work with fun. You’ve got great intellectual power and some extra oomph in the love department. There’s plenty of time to buckle down and work on ongoing projects and responsibilities. This may not be the time to kick off something new or make a major decision. Confronting an interpersonal angle – good, bad, or to be determined – is best done right away and head-on. SCORPIO If life is less than harmonious as the week begins don’t forget that you’re the author of your own story. A love scene just might be in the cosmic script with an intimate heart-to-heart a distinct possibility. If you’re coupled up, make it happen with your co-star; if you’re single, how about some auditions? A supporting role can be very satisfying now. SAGITTARIUS You’re all revved up as the week begins if the stars have their say, and if you’re open-minded, you just might find a surprisingly great route to take. Feel free to go off the map. Your energy will downshift and you may need a jump-start. Think exercise instead of more coffee – it will certainly center your thoughts. CAPRICORN How about starting a new tradition or trying on another style as the week begins? Thinking differently should be much appreciated. You just might find yourself engrossed in a creative enterprise or an interpersonal one. There are all kinds of delights and satisfaction to be found; give big ambition a rest. Your challenge may be to balance some opposites – work or play. AQUARIUS Let those around you in on your plan – they’ll love it. Some more mundane duties require attention; it may be financial matters or miscellaneous numbers. You may not want to change your focus, but you’ll have major issues later if you don’t. PISCES Certain expectations put on you might mean you already feel like you need a break. Set some limits; don’t push yourself to the point of stress. It’s a gorgeous time to do something creative, something that’ll really change your world. You might be entirely absorbed in something or someone but don’t miss out on something immediately apparent.

Leaders Summit, an unprecedented meeting of 50 African heads of state in the nation’s capital. “This is going to one of the most important weeks in the District and I’m glad that we can kick it off,” said Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) during his remarks. “Our staff has done a wonderful job. I’ve watched this festival grow as we fulfill our commitment to celebrating African culture. I’m glad to be part of a city that recognizes and nurtures the growth of our African population.” The DC Mayor’s Office on African Affairs hosted the fifth annual gathering on Sunday, August 3. More than 16,000 African immigrants – nearly one-tenth of the U.S. African population – call the District home, according to the Migration Policy Institute in Northwest. Most Africans living in the District have roots in Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, and Ghana. Though African immigrants count among the District’s most educated, many members of the community say they face challenges that include unemployment, access to city services, and inclusion into American society. But Sunday’s fete allowed residents to celebrate the African community’s presence in the District. More than 2,800 people converged on the grounds surrounding the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Northwest where throughout much of the afternoon, visitors two-stepped and clapped their hands

to the sounds of contemporary African musical acts that included Sahel, Cheick Hamala Diabeté, and other groups. They later learned interesting facts about each of the 54 African countries during the Parade of Flags. Some guests sampled a host of authentic African dishes including curry beef with rice, peppered chicken, puff balls, and Injera, a spongy flatbread from Ethiopia. Vendors stayed cool under their tents as they sold jewelry, masks, baskets, pocketbooks, and art. Ndimyake Mwakalyelye, Voice of America reporter and native Tanzanian, served as mistress of ceremonies while DJ Underdog kept heads nodding to upbeat contemporary African hits. “I enjoyed seeing products that were made for us,” said Akua Ansah Atei, 54, a vocational development specialist who works for a District government agency, as she sifted through books and took whiffs of custom-made salt scrubs and aromatherapy products. She said the festival allowed her to further explore her African ancestry, a journey she started in the early 1980s. “I hope to move to Ghana one day and stay there for an extended amount of time. I like America but I love Africa because that’s my real homeland,” said Atei who lives in Southeast. For some vendors like Sarah Moore, the festival provided an opportunity to demonstrate the African woman’s entrepreneurial spirit. Moore, D.C. director of Amani Ya Juu, an African fair trade boutique headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, chatted with passersby and sold purses, necklaces, and earrings made from aluminum, bone, grass, and paper beads, many of which originated from Kenya, Liberia, Rwanda, and Uganda. “Our organization equips African women with the skills needed to thrive as business owners,” said Moore, 28. “We help the women get their start and they assist each other economically while learning how to run a business and market their products. Women play a huge role in developing Africa,” said Moore, a Northwest resident.WI

Proof of participation in a government assistance program requires your current or prior year’s statement of benefits from a qualifying state or federal program; a notice letter or other official document indicating your participation in such a program; and/or another program participation document (for example, benefit card). Proof of income requires your prior year’s state or federal tax return; current income statement from an employer or paycheck stub; a statement of Social Security, Veterans Administration, retirement, pension, or Unemployment or Workmen’s Compensation benefits; a federal notice letter of participation in General Assistance; a divorce decree; a child support award; and/or another official document containing income information. At least three months of data is necessary when showing proof of income. In addition, the Lifeline program is limited to one discount per household, consisting of either wireline or wireless service. You are required to certify and agree that no other member of the household is receiving Lifeline service from Verizon or another communications provider. Lifeline service is a non-transferable benefit. Lifeline customers may not subscribe to certain other services, including other local telephone service. Consumers who willfully make false statements in order to obtain the Lifeline benefit can be punished by fine or imprisonment, or can be barred from the program.

For the past five weeks, I’ve been recounting the principles that lead to greatness, shared in the book “It’s Not Over Until You Win” by my mentor, and world-renowned inspirational and motivational speaker Les Brown. This week, let’s discuss Principle No. 6: “Mutual respect, the fundamental element of human relations.” The term respect is defined as “a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements;” therefore, mutual means the feelings you have for and show toward one another. Scripture shares ways to build mutual respect in numerous ways; examples include: The Holy Spirit can help you build respect when you learn to keep conversations confidential. Who wants to tell a Christian a secret, only to learn that practically the entire church knows? The Holy Spirit can help you build respect as you speak the truth in love. Assure people that you care for them and encourage them to voice their concerns objectively. The Holy Spirit can help us build mutual respect for each other when we trust Him to help us focus on one another’s strengths rather than their weaknesses. God has given each person special strengths, abilities, and gifts which are unique to that individual. Rather than focusing your attention on what a person lacks, trust the Lord to help you highlight their positive attributes. My radio show scriptural theme focuses on Paul and his words: “Think about things that are pure and lovely, dwell on the fine and good things in others, think about all the things you have to praise God for and be glad about.” (Phil. 4:8 -

Phillips). Ask the Lord to help you make the choice to speak to others about their strengths rather than what you may find irritating. The Holy Spirit can help you build respect by excelling in your relationships and ministries. Peter, James and John were respected because of their excellent rapport with others and their effective ministry skills. Luke wrote, “Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled because they had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13) Ask God for help to excel in your relationships and ministries with the power of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit can help you build respect when you make it known that you refuse to manipulate others. Ask the Lord for a more gracious attitude to serve one another as Christ would minister to them. Resist any temptation to use people, coerce individuals or try to influence others for your own selfish interests. Helen Keller once said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” Remember, character counts. A special meaning given to our class by my pastor, the Rev. Dr. James Coleman about character – and one that I personally embrace goes this way: “Character is who you are when there is nobody looking!” Mutual respect is built on honesty, and goodness! Treat others well, it will come back to you, the Bible tells us so. We do indeed reap what we

with Lyndia Grant

sow! If you want others to respect you, then show them the respect they deserve. Luke 6:32 reminds us, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” And Matthew 7:12 says it this way: Therefore all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” The Staple Singers got it right when they penned the song: “Respect Yourself.” Let’s take a look at the chorus, which says “Respect yourself, respect yourself. If you don’t respect yourself. Ain’t nobody gonna give a good cahoot. Respect yourself, respect yourself.”WI Lyndia Grant is an author, inspirational and motivational speaker, radio talk show host and columnist; visit her new website at www.lyndiagrant.com and, send emails to lyndiagrant@gmail.com; call 202-518-3192. AZIZ continued from Page 21 will remember the sacrifices of the courageous Chadian officers and soldiers who dislodged the rebels from their strongholds in northern Mali. History will also remember the French and American support to this truly global effort. We must support all those suffering from terrorist attacks with similar global coordination and resolve, building on these recent experiences. Our progress in the mastery of threats and the outpouring of international solidarity ushered in a new dynamic that we must take full ownership of. No one can deny that the future of our region is primarily our responsibility or that the effectiveness of external support depends on how well they are accepted locally. This is a question of our sovereignty and of our understanding of our environments. States must be in the lead, set priorities and identify responses. However, the cross border aspects of the challenges we face require, an unfailing solidarity of

CURRY continued from Page 21 the best way to reach Black voters is to lump them in with everyone else who watches TV. Even if television reaches more Black voters than Black newspapers, radio stations, magazines and Internet sites, it is not as trusted by African Americans as the Black Press. As a Nielsen study found, “Companies mistakenly believe there are no language barriers, that a general market ‘one-sizefits-all’ strategy is an effective way to reach African-Americans. Just the opposite is true.” If the DCCC is as are as smart as they think, they would recognize that in the Black community, the messenger is as important as the message. And that is not limited to the Black Press. It also applies to the largely White-controlled 527 organizations established in recent elections that

our states; and a joint action plan between our national and regional levels. Our global efforts, collectively deployed, should amplify individual action taken by States. Protecting the Future the Next Generation Ensuring democracy, strengthening the rule of law, and promoting good governance remain, from this point of view, are the best defense against radical temptations. In addition, the pledge of a needed legitimacy for public action is also a necessary condition for an efficient fight against poverty and insecurity. Meeting the youth expectations in this regard is a major priority in this struggle. It is clear, however, that despite efforts in this regard, the outcomes of policies for youth employment still remain below target in many regions where terrorism is planting its roots. The Young African Leaders Initiative, YALI, launched by President Obama, is complimenting other youth initiatives on the continent. These efforts should be seen as acted as though they knew more about our community than grass root organizations that are on the ground every day, yet continue to struggle for funding. Democrats face another hurdle – 67 percent of the Democratic base does not know there is a mid-term election in November, according to polling done for the DCCC by Cornel Belcher, an African American. In addition, a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center in July found: “Currently, 45 [percent] of registered voters who plan to support the Republicans in their district say they are more enthusiastic about voting than in prior congressional elections; that compares with 37 [percent] of those who plan to vote for the Democratic candidate.” Democrats need to give Blacks something to vote for rather than overly relying on Republican calls for impeachment to motivate the Black base.

part of the Trade Africa and Power Africa initiatives in order to ensure that the youth have a clear path to income generation and social empowerment. The African youth must not be reduced to instruments of violence and insecurity in a period when the continent shows much promise. They must embody and be seen as custodians of the hope and opportunity which lies before the continent. Our region has many assets to guarantee its children a bright future worthy of their glorious heritage. The energy of our youth and their entrepreneurial spirit, our natural resources, diverse and abundant, the complementarity of our territories and ecosystems, provide a foundation. The Sahelian, and African rebirth can therefore be sustained, with political will and a concrete vision for dealing with issues of security. More than a duty, it is a responsibility towards our people and history.WI

His Excellence Mohamed Ould Abddel Aziz is President of the Repubic of Mauritania and Chair, The Africa Union. According to an analysis of the Black vote by the Associated Press, African Americans voted at a higher rate than Whites in 2008 and 2012. Obviously, having Barack Obama’s name on the ballot was a key factor. Blacks can vote at high levels again in 2014 if they understand the success or failure Obama’s last two years in office will be determined by who gets elected in November. But if Democrats stubbornly stick to relying on television to reach Black voters, they will lose in 2014 just as they lost 30 years ago.WI George E. Israel refuses to accept the right of return for Palestinians who were driven from their land–or vacated their lands ‘temporarily’ (they hoped)–in the 1948-49 war or the 1967 war. Again, this violates international law. So, the question is really who

or what does this sound like? Does this sound like the workings of a democracy? Or, in the alternative does it sound more like the experience of Native Americans in the U.S; African Americans in the Jim Crow South; and Africans in apartheid South Africa? In a telephone call with reporters, Ben Rhodes, the Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications, said “We chose to do this summit to send a very clear signal that we are elevating our engagement with Africa. We see enormous opportunities in Africa as it continues to advance its own economic development and continues to develop its capabilities as African countries continue to develop their capabilities as security part-

The hijacking of democracy is not lost on North Carolina voters. Only 18 percent approve of the job the legislators are doing. And, because many voters think Gov. Pat McCory is on the side of the legislators, his approval rating of 39 percent sits far below his 45 percent disapproval rating. Our nation is engaged in a huge experiment, pitting low-wage states like North Carolina against states that want to make work pay. In 2012, 67.5 percent of working age (older than 15) poor people in North Carolina held a job during the year, including 8 percent who worked full-time year round.

better. Now, the latest GOP gimmick is to sue President Barack Obama, for not adequately enforcing provisions of the Affordable Care Act – Obamacare – which the Republican-controlled House has voted 43 times to repeal! That’s right, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) – who spent the last two years looking over his shoulder, afraid that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) would lead a mutiny and boot him out of his leadership spot for not being conservative enough, only to watch Cantor go down to defeat against an even more recalcitrant conservative, losing a primary election and his seat in Congress – Speaker Boehner has led his majority to vote to appropriThe Washington Informer

ners of the United States and as democratic partners of the United States.” He added, “What the United States has done in all of our signature development programs — on food and power and health – is not just provide assistance to Africa but build African capacity so that public health sectors are empowered to meet challenges on the continent; so that through our Power Africa initiative we are bringing electricity to the continent in a way that will foster development and integration with the global economy; and through our food security initiative we are building the capacity of the agricultural sector within Africa to

feed populations and also to foster economic growth.” We’ll see what happens next. One thing, however, is certain: The potential today for more economic development opportunity and progress in Africa is tremendous. In the wake of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, I believe Black Americans in particular should independently reach out to Africa to established long term, mutually beneficial relationships.WI

There are now 23 states with minimum wages higher than the federal minimum wage. So far, this year, in the 13 states that raised their minimum wages on Jan. 1, job growth has been faster than in the states that did not raise their minimum wage. This is where the agenda of Rev. Barber’s civil rights meets labor rights. Only 4.8 percent of North Carolina’s workforce is represented by a union. So there is no voice for workers on the plant floor or in the offices of North Carolina. The one place they can have a voice is in the state legislature, to campaign for decent wages. Under Ronald Reagan, voting laws were updated in 1984 to make it easier for people with disabilities and older Americans to vote. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993-the Motor Voter Act-insured greater access to voter registration through

state agencies interfacing with the public. The Help America Vote Act of 2002 aimed to clean up dysfunctional voting processes exposed by the “hanging chads” of Florida’s paper ballots in 2000. And President George W. Bush signed the reauthorization of the 1965 Voting Rights Act after it passed the Senate 98-0. So, after the continued progress on voting rights that was launched 50 years ago, you have to wonder why politicians would now take great efforts to make it more difficult to vote? Reversing democratic progress to silence the 99 percent only helps 1 percent of Americans. So, we must fight. WI Follow Spriggs on Twitter: @ WSpriggs. ate money to take the President of the United States to court and sue him, for not enforcing a law to which he, John Boehner is fundamentally opposed. Then – if the lawsuit scheme doesn’t work because the courts do maintain a modicum of independence since federal judges have lifetime appointments and don’t have to pander for money for election campaigns the way legislators do – then if the lawsuit fails, there is the conservative “nuclear” option. Plan B is to impeach President Obama, because in their minds he has clearly committed a boatload of “high crimes and misdemeanors” (not). This is too real. You can’t make this stuff up. Maybe this is just political theater. After all, the first argument the Tea Party zealots who want to push the House to impeach the President, is because of “his arrogance.” Now if the movement to impeach

President Bill Clinton, whose conduct in office really did shame the White House and embarrass the entire country, could not muster a quorum for impeachment, what right thinking person can imagine that a president can be impeached for his arrogance? More correctly, they want him out because they disagree with his policies? So I say, bring it on. Let’s hurry up and impeach President Obama (not). Maybe if the public sees an administration without one single scandal over moral turpitude, where the economy has improved from near depression levels to near prosperity (for some), then maybe folks will see that the real problem is a Congress which has done more to make this one man in office fail than it has done to make the government work better. But probably not.WI
