Michael Brown Laid to Rest

By Barrington M. Salmon WI Staff Writer@bsalmondc Almost 5,000 mourners packed Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis two weeks after a white police officer shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Impassioned speakers at the

service tied Brown’s death to other black men and women, victims of extra-judicial killings sacrificed on the altar of racism and discrimination. They implored Ferguson’s black residents and other African Americans to channel their anger into political action.

In recognition of The Washington Informer’s 50th Anniversary on October 16, 2014, we are looking back at some of the newsworthy events we covered in the D.C. area over the past 50 years. In late August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans causing the city’s levies to break and flooding that resulted in the deaths of more than 1,800 people and the evacuation of thousands more. It was one of the worst natural disasters ever recorded in U.S. history as it devastated the Gulf Coast from central Florida to Texas. Nearly 400 people from the New Orleans area, including the very young, were airlifted and bused to the Nation’s Capital where many received aid and temporary housing at the D.C. Armory.

Volunteers, coordinated by the Red Cross and DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency provided help in terms of finding permanent housing and jobs for those who had to evacuate their homes. /WI Archives

James Baldwin, Bayard Rustin Remembered Multimedia Event Pays Tribute to Two Freedom Fighters

By D. Kevin McNeir WI Contributing Writer In most cases the accomplishments of individuals whose deeds eventually earned them the distinction of “icon” didn’t begin with them intending to be remembered by future generations.

In fact, those whose names and contributions have been recorded forever in history usually had only one thing in mind: following their intuition in order to change the world in which they lived for the better.

And to honor two black men that helped shape the civil rights movement in the U.S., the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, along with the DC Commission on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, held a multimedia event and panel discussion at the Historic Lincoln Theatre in Northwest on August 18.

“James Baldwin said in the 1940s that to be black in America was to be in a constant state of rage,” said Kevin Brown, founder and director of the Baltimore, Maryland-based James Baldwin Literary Society. “He was an activist before it was popular and years after his death, we’re still celebrating his legacy. His works are part of the core curriculum and he’s still a spokesperson for blacks and gays,” said Brown who also owns a popular Baltimore restaurant, the Station North Arts Café Gallery.

The event, “Bayard Rustin and James Baldwin: Freedom Fighters and Friends,” featured live performances by: Reverb; Princess Mhoon Cooper; S. Xavier Carnegie; Keith

Snipes; SynchroniCity; and Russell Lyles. The artists belted out songs, danced, played music and recited works from Baldwin and Rustin.

In addition, the co-sponsors of the event wrote, produced and presented a documentary on the lives of the two freedom fighters – two black, gay men who exhibited the courage to fight for that in which they believed. More than 200 attended the two-hour event.

“Bayard Rustin isn’t as wellknown as some leaders from the civil rights movement but like Baldwin he was a very gifted man,” said Mandy Carter, a self-described “out, southern, black, lesbian, social justice activist” and the co-founder of the D.C.-based National Black Justice Coalition. “In fact, the March on Washington, which brought 200,000 people together on a hot, August day in D.C. was his brainchild. Rustin led by example – we should too,” said Carter, 65.

Carter and Brown joined Cynthia Brock-Smith, secretary of the District of Columbia and chair, DC Commission on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, as part of a panel discussion on the contributions of Baldwin and Rustin. Denise Rolark Barnes, publisher of The Washington Informer, served as moderator.

“We’ll take the lessons of this film and the conversation that we’ve shared as panelists and with the audience back to the commission,” said Brock-Smith. “The mayor [Vincent C. Gray] chose to reestablish the Commission so that our children learn our history and can gain the skills needed to take this city to the next level. And as Dr. King showed

One Howard University graduate said she was surprised that based on the documentary, so many college-age youth are unaware of either Rustin or Baldwin.

1963 – The historic March on Washington for Black rights takes place. It was the largest civil rights demonstration in American history drawing people from throughout the nation to Washington, D.C. It was at this march that Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

August 29 1924 – Dinah Washington is born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Her powerful voice would enable her to become one of the most influential singers of the 20th century. Washington died of a drug overdose in 1963.

1958 – Michael Jackson is born on this day in Gary, Indiana. The “King of Pop” was the seventh of nine children. He died June 25, 2009 after being given a powerful drug to enable him to sleep.

1962 – Mal Goode becomes America’s first Black network news commentator when he begins broadcasting for ABC Television on this day in 1962.

August 30 1800 – The Gabriel Prosser-led slave rebellion is halted before it can start because of bad weather and betrayal by two slaves who told their white masters of the impending revolt. Prosser had meticulously planned the rebellion and organized an estimated 1,000 slaves to participate in an attack on Richmond, Virginia.

1966 – Prominent civil rights attorney Constance Baker-Motley is confirmed to the U.S. District Court in New York. She thus became the

first African-American female to hold a seat on the federal bench. Baker-Motley had participated in the historic Brown v. Board of Education case which led to the desegregation of the nation’s schools.

August 31 1935 – Frank Robinson, the first African American to manage a major league baseball team, was born on this day in Beaumont, Texas.

Robinson became player-manager of the Cleveland Indians in 1975. He kept the job for about a year. He became manager of the San Francisco Giants in 1980.

2002 – Jazz great Lionel Hampton died on this day at the age of 94. Hampton gained international fame as a “big band” leader and for his amazing abilities playing the vibraphone.

September 1 1975 – General Daniel “Chappie” James becomes the nation’s first Black four-star general and takes command of the North American Air Defense Command. The position made him a key player in the nation’s nuclear defense system.

1977 – Legendary actress-singer Ethel Waters dies at the age of 80 in Chatsworth, California. Waters became the second African American in history to be nominated for an Academy Award.

September 2 1766 – Post-colonial era Black leader James Forten is born on this day in 1766. Little known today but during that period he was one of the most prominent Black men in America. Born free in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania he became a fierce anti-slavery activist, an inventor and successful businessman.

1919 – Lincoln Motion Picture Company owned by African Americans Noble Johnson and Clarence Brooks releases its first featurelength film, “A Man’s Duty.”

But they have drafted very well and have brought in guys like [Bryce] Harper and [Stephen] Strasburg, and they are definitely the team right now to beat in baseball. I love the Redskins and Robert Griffin III, but they’re a ways out. If the Wizards can get Kevin Durant in free agency, then they’ll definitely contend for a title in the next couple of years.

Charles Dickson Mount Rainier, Maryland From what I’ve seen from their games and their win-loss ratio, I feel that the Washington Capitals are probably the closest D.C. team to winning a championship. I don’t want to say too much about the Washington Redskins, so I’ll leave it at that. I have a lot of friends who are into the Capitals and they’re always talking about how good the team is. They’ve always been playoff contenders.

The midday shooting triggered angry but peaceful protests and then nights of unrest that saw businesses looted and burned. Law enforcement’s response of firing and lobbing tear gas and smoke grenades,

shooting rubber bullets and wooden projectiles at protestors and threatening, intimidating and then arresting people is behavior decried by civil libertarians , those in legal circles and others as illegal and unconstitutional.

As the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin did in 2012, Brown’s killing sparked spirited protests and marches around the country. Trayvon, also unarmed, was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida.

Demonstrators in Ferguson are demanding Wilson’s arrest and the appointment of a special prosecutor. Authorities have done neither and Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon refuses to replace State Attorney Bob McCullogh, who residents believe is too biased to conduct an honest investigation.

Blacks’ fear, frustration and anger around the country is palpable.

coward in any way or shape but I’m petrified right now,” said Nicole Lee, a human rights lawyer and immediate past president of TransAfrica, the oldest African-American foreign policy organization. “I’m petrified for my girls that their bodies and hearts will be stolen, destroyed by (this) system.”

“If you’re not scared, you’re crazy. You should be petrified. As I saw coverage (of the disturbances in Ferguson), I was shocked. I could not believe what was happening in this country … regardless of what we think about foreign affairs, it’s not just tanks on the streets or tear gas, it’s how municipalities think they can push us back.”

Panelist and educator Damon Jones’ remarks left the audience speechless.

“I’m black and I don’t matter,” he said. “It doesn’t matter about how many books I read, doesn’t matter that I write and teach or that I’m articulate. None of that matters. I’m a black man in the United States of America. I’m not as important as the person on the screen who may not look like me.”

“It doesn’t matter that my president is black. An officer can say I look like X, Y or Z, I can put up my hands and still be shot,” the Maryland resident said.

Lee, Jones and several panelists spent an afternoon over the past weekend at the Northeast Library in the District to discuss Brown’s death and the circumstances surrounding the case, the festering racial wounds and the relationship between police and black men. The group of young professionals and activists also participated in strategy sessions to devise practicable solutions to issues related

to institutional racism, law enforcement, election reform and human rights violations.

“I’m the mother of two boys, one the same age of Michael,” said Avis Jones-DeWeever. “I know with absolute certainty that it could be my son or anyone in this room. They’re moving through life under the cloak of black manhood.”

Jones-DeWeever cited a USA Today study that found that twice each week in America, a black man is killed by a white police officer. She said her greatest concern and that of many African Americans is that they can’t really protect their children.

Sixty-seven percent of Ferguson’s population of 21,000 is black. There has always been lingering tension between black residents and the majority-white police force accused of harassment, unwarranted traffic stops and the arrest of black drivers. Ferguson’s politics is dominated by whites.

There’s one black on the city council and another on the school board. The rest – nine – are white. Despite white flight, whites have never relinquished control of the levers of political power and the patronage and contracts that come with that.

Independent Political Analyst David Bositis said Ferguson’s problem is a voting rights problem.

“They have their elections when nobody will vote. Even though Ferguson is two-thirds black, on Election Day, more voters are white than black.”

Bositis said it’s dubious to hold elections when Ferguson does.

“With the elections in April 2013, by then, everyone was worn out by politics and voters had very lit-

“The (local) government could really care less about black people.

The whole point of the dates is to maintain white supremacy. I’m hoping that the next time they have municipal elections, blacks turn out, take control and change the election date.”

Harvard Professor Charles Ogletree said he’s distressed by the Brown killing and laments the continued murders of unarmed blacks by law enforcement.

“A young black man who had no gun at all was still shot multiple times by a police officer. It reflects what I’ve seen happening in New Jersey and New York to California,” he said. “This officer should be arrested.

I received hundreds of supportive comments from African Americans inside and outside the community of Ferguson. I also received criticism from a lot of whites who thought the police officer acted appropriate-

ly. The recourse is to diversify police forces. If the public saw people who looked like them, that would make a difference. We have to see police as friends not enemies.”

One indication of the racial chasm separating blacks and whites are the protests seeking justice for Brown and rallies for Wilson. Protestors represent people and colors across the spectrum, while Wilson’s supporters are white. Already, his supporters have raised more than $400,000 for Wilson’s legal defense fund and whites have offered unwavering support for the officer who’s on paid administrative leave.

“We really need to understand how to create the change we need when we have a certain sizeable cohort of people who aren’t moved with evidence shown to them,” said Jones- DeWeever, president and CEO of Incite Unlimited, LLC., a local consulting firm.

“I don’t have the answers but we have to think about what we can do about racism. We have to find out where’s that moveable middle so we can produce a fair and equitable society.”WI

The banking industry, regulated by both federal and state governments, has undergone tremendous change and growth since the founding of the Bank of North America in Philadelphia in 1781.

Mega banks like JP Morgan and Bank of America dominate the financial services landscape today, but there’s still room for smaller institutions whose leaders have mastered prudence, forecasting and can instinctively take calculated risks, like those at Industrial Bank which just marked its 80th year of service in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

“Our employees and friends were so excited when the executives visited all of our branches last week [Wednesday, August 20] and treated everyone to cake – it’s just beginning to sink in and it’s both daunting and humbling,” said B. Doyle Mitchell, Jr., president and CEO of Industrial Bank. “I feel very grateful, blessed and realize that God has done a magnificent thing.”

Mitchell, Jr., 52, stands at the helm of the largest minority-owned commercial bank in the Washington Metropolitan Area which in recent years has fluctuated between being the seventh- and sixth-largest blackowned financial institution in the U.S. His sister, Patricia Mitchell, 54, works beside him in their headquarters in Northwest as the bank’s executive vice president. The native Washingtonians remain firmly entrenched in a legacy established by their grandfather, the bank’s founder and then continued by their father.

“I don’t think my grandfather and the eight others who started the initial board could have imagined that the bank they founded would be around 80 years later because many have failed,” Patricia Mitchell said, who first began working at the bank when she was 14 during the summer. “But they were simply trying to meet a need – providing mortgage loans to blacks who couldn’t get loans elsewhere.”

Through its eight branch locations – six in the District and two in Prince George’s County – the bank targets communities that have been historically underserved by large financial institutions. Industrial offers an array of financial products and services, such as mortgage financing for low-income and first-time homebuyers – crucial offerings in economically distressed markets.

“Five hundred banks have failed in the last five years, maybe more, and it didn’t matter if they were minority owned or not,” said Mitchell, Jr. who began his full-time career with the

bank in 1984 after earning a bachelor of arts in economics from Rutgers University. “It takes being prudent in lending but that doesn’t mean you have to be conservative. You simply have to know the people you’re lending to, understand how to protect your company, remain in compliance with the regulations and never go beyond what you know how to do.”

One business leader who lives in Northwest said he’s witnessed firsthand how Industrial Bank has adjusted to the times and succeeded.

“The fact that three generations of black bankers have made such vital contributions to D.C. is nothing short of incredible,” said Harry Wingo, president and CEO of the DC Chamber of Commerce. “The stewardship and leadership provided by Doyle and Patricia have enabled them to overcome adversity and even navigate with success during one of the worst recessions that our country has ever experienced. Industrial Bank has helped to create a vibrant economy in the Washington Metropolitan Area,” said Wingo, 48.

According to most economists, the financial crisis in the late 2000s, triggered by a liquidity shortfall in the U.S. banking system, rivaled the fallout suffered during the Great Depression.

The result: large financial institutions collapsed, key businesses failed, consumer wealth declined in the trillions and many citizens experienced record number evictions and foreclosures.

Mitchell, Jr. said as the rules of business changed, the bank had to develop new strategies.

“Many community banks like ours failed because of new regulatory requirements,” he said. “It’s become more costly to run the back office and many banks like ours have either merged or failed. But my parents and my grandfather had a good work ethic and were modest people. I think that’s rubbed off on me and my sister as

well,” said Mitchell, Jr. On October 26, 2013, the brother-sister duo accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of Industrial Bank from the DC Chamber of Commerce. Barbara Lang, who served as the Chamber’s president for almost 12 years before stepping down last year, presented the Mitchells with the award.

“They [Doyle and Patricia] were here for the African-American community when other financial institutions were not,” Lang said. “I was pleased as the-then president and CEO to present the award at the Chamber’s Choice Awards Gala. They have quite a legacy in our city and [are] fortunately still going strong.”

Patricia Mitchell said she still smiles whenever she thinks about the evening during which she and her brother received their award.

“I think there were over 1,500 people at the gala and they gave us a standing ovation,” she said. “Almost everyone there knew us and I believe they understood what we’ve always tried to do – help people, especially blacks, who may not be bankable to take the steps so they can become bankable. We try to stay away from saying no – we try to say not yet.”

Similar to other financial institutions, Industrial Bank has already incorporated the latest technology into its day-to-day operations.

“We want to make sure we can bank the next generation the way they want and that includes unveiling a new website so that people can open up accounts on line,” Mitchell, Jr. said. “Six weeks ago we launched a new mobile app and we’ll be making use of social media before the year is out.”

“We need to grow so we can lend more money to our customers and do more in the community – that’s part of our future too,” Patricia Mitchell said. WI

Bus Safety Partnership Announced School officials recently joined members of the county’s police department to announce a partnership that promotes safety on school buses.

During a news conference held August 21 in promotion of the School Bus Stop Arm Camera Deployment Program’s operation “Safe Cross,” officials explained how it helps keep students safe as they board and leave public school buses.

“Safe Cross” will also help prevent accidents when drivers fail to stop for school buses that have their stop arms extended.

The press conference also included a demonstration where officials used school buses to show how the stop arm camera operates.

Evening School Registration Students interested in enrolling in “Evening High School” can register by appointment between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., September 2-4 at Crossland High School located at 6901 Temple Hills Road in Temple Hills, Maryland, and at Northwestern High School, located at 7000 Adelphi Road in Hyattsville, Maryland.

By Barrington M. Salmon WI Staff Writer@bsalmondc Thanks to a $49,000 grant from the Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council, Greenbelt police will be deploying a portable automated license plate reader to help fight crime.

The reader, which costs almost $20,000, will be used to complement the efforts of officers to curb criminal activities, locate stolen vehicles, snag drivers who have outstanding tickets and warrants and corral others suspected of committing varied offenses.

“It will be put in ‘hot spots.’ There are certain places based on the number of crimes and kinds of crimes where a license plate reader would be helpful. It’s like having an extra police officer on the street,” said Greenbelt Mayor Pro Tem Judith F. Davis. “It’s stationary but it will be put in different places. We already have readers with police and parking enforcement personnel.”

The reader is capable of scanning up to 1,000 license plates a second and will operate 24 hours a day.

Police department documents recently released to the American Civil Liberties Union through the Freedom of Information Act illustrate the effectiveness of the readers according to department officials.

In 2010, six readers led to 100 traffic arrests, the recovery of 20 stolen vehicles and seven stolen license plates, and the location of two missing persons.

Department officials said its officers and several police agencies were able to bust a stolen car ring which took cars from this area and shipped them overseas from the Port of Newark Sea Cargo Container Terminal in New Jersey.

Davis said she, Mayor Emmett Jordan and other council members discussed different aspects and the implications of acquiring the reader and they were satisfied that license plate data would be protected and not be abused.

The Greenbelt Police Department sends its data to the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center which stores the information for a year.

Davis, who served as Greenbelt mayor for 16 years said the data is then purged.

“It’s not used for any other purposes. That made it more comfortable.”

Yet it’s the very fact that this information is held for so long that makes privacy rights advocates and civil libertarians uneasy. They worry that this type of surveillance can be used by police to track the movements of law-abiding citizens, and there are also

qualms about violations of the privacy of ordinary citizens when police departments hold onto information about drivers’ locations and license plate numbers for more than 30 days.

An investigation by The Center for Investigative Reporting in 2012 detailed the activities of Vigilant Solutions, a California-based private manufacturer of license plate recognition systems. The firm is engaged in corporate data mining, storing drivers’ license plate reader information in a national database called the National Vehicle Location Service and selling this data to police departments. Vigilant isn’t governed by the few privacy regulations public and government agencies use, the report noted, and in addition, the company, by selling drivers’ data is exploiting a loophole the company uses to sidestep the limited regulations that exist to protect people from improper, retroactive police spying.

Questions that swirl around ALPRs is how these agencies gather information, how long the data is stored, when and how it’s purged and the level of success digital surveillance has in locating and arresting those suspected of committing a crime.

Unless these privacy-protective policies are backed by the force of law, ALPR becomes yet another tracking technology, enabling the government to easily see which motorists among us visit AA meetings, activist gatherings, union meetings or pornography shops,” said Privacy Matters staff in an article titled, ‘Who’s on Your Tail? License Plate Technology Lets Law Enforcement Track Your Every Move.’

“Metro D.C. and lower Manhattan are particularly saturated with the systems, but their use is expanding rapidly nationwide, often assisted by large grants from the federal government.”

reasons,” said WHO officials, in a situation assessment released on August 22. “Many families hide infected loved ones in their homes. As Ebola has no cure, some believe infected loved ones will be more comfortable dying at home. Others deny that a patient has Ebola and believe that care in an isolation ward – viewed as an incubator of the disease – will lead to infection and certain death. Most fear the stigma and social rejection that come to patients and families when a diagnosis of Ebola is confirmed.”

Fear has gripped citizens in the affected countries and with the distrust of foreign aid workers and health care personnel that exists, gaining their trust has been difficult.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the public face of the outbreak on the continent, cancelled plans to attend the U.S.-Africa Summit on August 4-6. She’s asked for assistance from abroad and has instituted measures such as establishing quarantine areas, closing most of its borders, placing non-essential government employees on leave and closing all schools.

Africare President Darius Mans, Ph.D., said his organization has been on the ground helping to fight the epidemic.

“We’re very, very actively engaged in the fight against Ebola,” he explained. “In Liberia, we went out and mobilized the support of 10 private-sector companies for protective equipment for workers. And what we’re doing right now is mobilizing resources to deal with the underlying problem of behavior.”

“There’s the stigma and misinformation. Folks just do not know how it’s spread. People are reacting in a way that helps it spread.”

Mans, who’s headed the nonprofit for more than 40 years,

said something as simple as hand-washing can make a significant difference.

“Burying the dead, and washing bodies is an example,” he said. “We have to teach people to give respect without spreading Ebola.”

Mans also said Sirleaf ’s the right person for the challenge.

“She doesn’t wait on anyone.

Anyone who knows her knows that that’s not how she rolls,” he said. “Do they have a capacity problem? Of course they do. Is there a role for outsiders to increase capacity? Absolutely. We have been strengthening public health at the community level for a number of years. There have been tremendous results.

We want to come out at the other end of this stronger. I’m encouraged by what President Sirleaf is doing. She’s pulling people together, bringing in traditional elders, doing everything they can to manage Ebola. Then, we’re also doing what we can to get private contributions where they’re needed.”

Eleven West African countries have formed a bloc where they are sharing resources and knowledge, and the group pooled about $25 million to bolster the health care infrastructures in their respective countries. The World Bank recently allocated $200 million to fight Ebola across West Africa.

Earlier this month, Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote bestowed $924,000 to establish the National Ebola Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in Yaba, Lagos. Following this, billionaire Tony Elumelu donated more than $617,000 for his foundation to fight the outbreak. Fifty percent of the fund will serve Nigeria and the rest will be distributed to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile, two U.S. missionaries, flown back to America for treatment in Atlanta and given experimental drugs, went home last week.

Dr. Joanne Liu, international director of Doctors Without Borders, describes the battle against the disease as akin to a war.

“The epidemic is still growing faster than efforts to keep up with it, and it will take months before governments and health workers in the region can get the upper hand,” she said recently.

Dr. Liu and others on the ground are saying that they’re hoping to finally begin to get their arms around the epidemic.

The key, they note, is that success in controlling the disease will occur only if sufficient resources are brought in. Weakened and underdeveloped public health infrastructures are overwhelmed by the number of cases.

She said health officials are fighting the epidemic at different levels in each country and Liberia needs to be the focal point of urgent international attention if the virus is to be contained.

“If we don’t stabilize Liberia, we will never stabilize the whole region,” Dr. Liu warned in pub-

lished reports.

Officials said the outbreaks are fast-moving which has created challenges for the international partners providing support.

Whatever staff, equipment, supplies and protective equipment are on the ground, are not nearly enough. There is widespread denial, others fear rejection and the stigma associated with the disease, and more still avoid hospitals and clinics.

Scores of nurses, medical and support staff have died, and countless others have fled. The epidemic has affected the countries’ ability to grow and harvest crops. In response, The World Food Program has delivered food to more than one million people quarantined in the border areas where Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea intersect.WI

Dare to Dream Would you ever allow Charles Koch to mentor your children? A recent article in the Huffington Post, by Christina Wilkie and Joy Resmovits, discussed “How the Koch Brothers Are Buying Their Way into the Minds of Public School Students.” The article states that, Charles G. Koch, the billionaire chairman of Koch Industries, is funding a public high school course designed to turn young people into “liberty-advancing agents.” Instead of criticizing the program and suggesting Koch is engaged in some sinister plot, the question progressive Blacks should be considering is: What’s wrong with teaching teens how to become self-sufficient small business owners?

Politicians of both Democrat and Republican stripe talk about “jobs” as if they magically appear.

For African Americans, the answer is creating more Black entrepreneurs, who will in turn create jobs in our communities and inspire others as well. Is Black antagonism toward Charles Koch so prevalent that if he was willing to help African Americans build a culture of excellence would Black dads and moms turn him down?

Koch-inspired high school or college-level youth who acquire basic principles in economics will provide America new entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs drive America’s economy and account for the majority of our nation’s new job creation and innovations. According to a Census Bureau Survey of Business Owners, self-employed individuals operate three-fourths of U.S. businesses. The Small Business Administration reports that America’s 25.8 million small businesses employ more than 50 percent of the private workforce, generate more than half of the nation’s gross domestic product, and are the principal source of new jobs.

Those Blacks focused on partisan politics don’t have the mindset to seek mentorship from one of the world’s most successful capitalist. Bloomberg News reported that Charles and David Koch have a net worth above $100 billion. The brothers are majority stakeholders in Koch Industries, the nation’s second-largest privately-owned company after Cargill Inc. Those Blacks looking

The organization aims to educate high school students and program alumni to provide them “with business and entrepreneurial education and experiences to prosper and become contributing members of society.” Youth Entrepreneurs was founded in 1991 by the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation as an eight-week course designed to improve the professional potential of at-risk students. Since its founding the organization has produced more than 10,000 Youth Entrepreneurs. Let’s be truthful, the majority of Blacks still look cockeyed at business concepts and enterprise operations. Youth Entrepreneurs’ official mission is to provide youth with “business and entrepreneurial education and experiences that help them prosper and become contributing members of society.”

Except for his father Fred Chase Koch, who could be better mentoring capitalistic principles and processes than Charles Koch? Mentoring is a process for informal transference of knowledge, social capital, and psychosocial support. While the Koch brothers are perhaps best known for their support of conservative political candidates and causes, they have a longstanding interest in education. Charles Koch is no friend of Black Democratic politicians. They have a tremendous disdain for the Koch ideology that proposes radical revision of the American education system. An opponent of big government Koch advocates promote: “the complete separation of education and state … government ownership, operation, regulation, and subsidy of schools and colleges should be ended.”

Do’s and Don’ts of ChargeOff Debts With 19 of the nation’s banks annually selling $37 billion in charged-off debts, the absence of clear guidelines for banks and debt collectors has led to many consumers facing lawsuits, harassing telephone calls and threats over debts that they may not even owe. Even worse, debt collectors have coerced or sued the wrong people, overstated the amount, or even collected illegitimate debts.

Now, thanks in part to the efforts of advocates, a federal regulator has taken an important first-step towards holding banks accountable for the businesses they sell debts to and the threshold information that must now accompany those sales.

On August 4, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) issued guidelines that 1,729 national banks and federal savings associations must now observe. As of June 30, these institutions collectively held $7.76 trillion in assets.

According to the OCC, “Banks that engage in debt sales should do so in a safe and sound manner and in compliance with applicable laws – including consumer protection laws. . . .Banks should be cognizant of the potential for fraud, human error, and systems failures when selling debt to debt buyers.”

At the crux of OCC’s guidance is a trio of concerns: consumer protection, accountability and accuracy.

Banks must provide timely notification to customers when their past-due debts are being sold. And these notifications must clearly identify the dollar amount of the debt that has been sold, as well as the name and address of the debt buyer.

At the time of sale, banks must provide accurate and increased information for each debt.

“This guidance is one of the first actions taken by a federal regulator to address the way banks sell off their old debt,” said Lisa Stifler of the Center for Responsible Lending. “The agency sent a strong message to banks that they must no longer sell debts without proper due diligence, risk management, and attention to the fair treatment of consumers.”

OCC also identified specific types of debt that are not appropriate for sale. The list includes: deceased account holders; borrowers that have sought or are seeking bankruptcy protection; accounts lacking clear evidence of ownership; account holders currently in litigation with the institution; debt that has been otherwise settled or is in the process of settlement; and debt incurred as a result of fraudulent activ-

By advising banks of the dos and don’ts of debt selling, the hope is that consumer harms stemming from these transactions will disappear.

“For years, debt collectors have gotten away with flooding the courts with frivolous debt collection lawsuits and fraudulently obtaining judgments, when they have no proof that the debts are actually owed,” said Susan Shin of New Economy Project. “The OCC’s guidance should help stop this wrongful transfer of wealth from low-income people and communities to debt buyers.”

Instead of debt buyers rushing to courts to sue consumers for debts owed, OCC’s guidelines and ongoing monitoring will stem – if not end — consumers having their paychecks surprisingly garnished, or a court finding in favor of a debt collector simply because the affected consumer never received a notice of the impending action. Unfortunately, many default judgments have been based on inaccuracies, incomplete or outdated personal information or questionable claims.

“The OCC guidance will help bring banks and debt collectors into compliance with federal and state consumer protection, as well as other laws,” said Rob Randhava of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 200 groups.

Push to Recruit Black, Latino Nurses

Heart Association Teams with Macy’s for Scholarship Program

By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer Arihanna Venable enjoys talking with her patients as she performs physical exams, takes their blood pressure and, sometimes administers medicine to help soothe wounds or illnesses.

However, when Venable looks at so many other registered nurses, she finds a glaring and often troubling trend.

“Not many of them look like me,” said Venable, 33, of Southeast. “We just don’t have a lot of black registered nurses and I think if we can somehow change that, a lot of our patients will feel more at ease and they’ll be more likely to come in and see a doctor before they encounter serious health problems.”

Venable counts among the 5.4 percent of African-American nurses in the nation. A small minority, considering there’s an estimated 2.5 million registered nurses in the United States. Latinos also are in the minority as just 3.6 percent hold those positions.

Because of the lack of minorities who serve as registered nurses, the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign and Macy’s Department Store have continued its three-year partnership in which 16 scholarships of $2,500 each are awarded annually to help increase the number of diverse healthcare professionals.

Healthcare officials said the need for the scholarship program can be found in the fact that tuition hikes at colleges and universities and dramatic cuts to graduate medical education funding across the nation have forced many students to find new ways to pay for college.

In an effort to ease the burden and increase the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine, the American Heart Association and Macy’s, the association’s national sponsor, offer aspiring registered nurses the “Go Red Multicultural Scholarship Fund.”

However, there aren’t many blacks or Latinos among them, officials said.

“The numbers speak for themselves,” said Eva Gomez, a registered nurse and scholarship judge for the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign, which has raised more than $50 million since 2004.

“As the demographics change and more ethnically and racially diverse populations grow, there will definitely continue to be a need for healthcare providers who mirror these patients,” she said.

Gomez said having diverse providers makes it possible to deliver healthcare that’s meaningful, culturally appropriate and patient and family-centered.

Deidre Woods-Walton, a registered nurse and president of the National Black Nurses Association in Silver Spring, Maryland, echoed Gomez’ comments about having a diverse pool of nurses.

“The patient’s cultural identification, spiritual affiliation, language and gender can all affect the care they need, and their behavioral responses to illness,” Woods-Walton said.

Now in its third year, the scholarship program promotes greater inclusion of multicultural women in medical, nursing and allied health studies to better meet the cultural needs of racially diverse patients, officials said.

Healthcare officials said there continues to be a steady increase in minority medical school graduates. Officials at the Association of American Medical Colleges in Northwest reported that African Americans comprised 1,163 of the 17,341 medical school graduates in 2012.

Asians accounted for 3,721 and Latinos comprised 1,294 of the graduates, all of which are significant increases over previous graduating classes.

“Throughout my 20-year career in healthcare, I’ve learned that having a cultural connection between patients and healthcare providers, impacts the provider-patient dynamic,” Gomez said. “The way in which healthcare providers, who look and sound like their patients, connect with them makes a positive impact on how patients and families respond, consult and accept healthcare guidance and care.”

Building a diverse physician and medical workforce counts as a critical component in the delivery of patient-centered care to the multicultural communities that will enter the healthcare system under the Affordable Care Act, said Dr. Jennifer Mieres, senior vice president in the Office of Community and Public Health, chief diversity and inclusion officer for North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in New York and spokesperson for the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women.”

“The recruitment of talented, young diverse women into the healthcare field is a critical step in the delivery of quality, culturally-sensitive, patient-centered care,” Mieres said. WI

Gray, Partners Shape Anacostia River’s Rebirth Humanities Council of Washington, DC has extended its deadline for the “Who’s a Washingtonian?” Grant program to September 5th. By Barrington M. Salmon WI Staff Writer@bsalmondc When Mayor Vincent C. Gray signed the “Sustainable DC Omnibus Act of 2014” into law, among a number of things, it also marked the official kick off a multi-year, multi-faceted plan to clean up the Anacostia River.

The eight-mile waterway, which runs from Bladensburg, Maryland into the District, is now laden with sediment, trash, sewage, pathogens, toxic chemicals, stormwater runoff and other pollutants. By 2032, Gray said, he anticipates that the Anacostia will be fishable and swimmable.

“I think we all know that the river is more than just water. It’s a resource to support our life,” said Gray during a July 29 signing ceremony at the Anacostia Community Boathouse in Southeast.

“We knew this was once a place where people swam and fished.

Now, our residents are advised against swimming. While there have been many attempts in the past, I’m encouraged.”

Once a thriving body of water supporting a variety of fish and other wildlife, over the past century advocates say, the Anacostia has been severely neglected by Congress, local elected officials and residents. The Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) rates the Anacostia an ‘F’ for water quality and the Natural Resources Defense Council has described the river as the poster child for America’s tragically ne-

glected, abused urban waterways.

But with the prospective measures being prepared to clean up the river, Gray and others are optimistic and hopeful.

Gray said former Mayor Anthony A. Williams accepted his offer to serve as honorary chair of an advisory council comprised of government officials, environmental advocates and community leaders. Williams, CEO of the Federal City Council, said the organization is ready to join forces with a range of partners to effect the cleanup.

The Federal City Council, Williams said, hopes to use its influence to push and sustain lost momentum for comprehensive revitalization of the river area.

“We’re pleased to have received a grant to clean up the Anacostia and continue efforts to remove stormwater,” said Williams during a recent interview. “We’re beginning an effort to remove pervasive toxins at the bottom of the river. We want to create along the river, an inclusive area for people of all neighborhoods and backgrounds. We want to sustain and continue the development of parkland and open spaces.”

Williams said he envisions areas around the river populated with the right balance of sustained development and preservation, economic activity, mixuse services and housing.

“We won’t accomplish goals unless we have standards. Mayor Gray’s bill has a fabulous educational component – environmental education. It’s truly about behavior change. There’s nothing that people are asked to do that will ruin their lives or take them into financial ruin,” he joked. “We’ve gotta get to the next generation.”

One of AWS’s goals is to connect greater numbers of people to the river. A bike path, Foster

said, will be a huge game changer and will offer residents and visitors more access to the Anacostia.

At-Large Council member Anita Bonds said she remembers going on outings to the river with her father.

“I’m a Southeast girl and the river is something I knew a lot about,” she said. “Every now and then dad would bring us down. We always wanted to splash around in the water but my mother wouldn’t want us to because of how dirty she thought the water was. Well, the

water’s getting cleaner and the environment is getting cleaner.

I commend Mayor Gray for almost making D.C. brand new.”

Doug Siglin, executive director of the Federal City Council’s Anacostia River Initiative, lauded the Gray administration for “getting its hands around stormwater runoff.”

“All this investment is going to be worthwhile when we develop a truly great park,” he said. “We need to improve the land so that one day children in Ward 8 and Ward 3 can come down here and play in the water at the park.” WI

ANACOSTIA continued from Page 20 Environment and Tetra Tech, hosted a boat tour along the Anacostia River after the signing to demonstrate how a sediment sample is taken, logged, and placed in a container for lab analysis for the project.The Anacostia River study area consists of the tidal portion of the river from the northwest branch and the northeast branch confluence in Prince George’s County to the Potomac River.

AWS counts as one of the major players which in addition to engaging in activities to assist in cleanup, helps keep public focus on transforming the river. The nonprofit is part of a network of regional and business, civil

society, local and federal partners and it works with all stakeholders, especially the city, federal government and the State of Maryland, to transform the river.

AWS President Jim Foster said the Anacostia is a river of striking beauty and on a scale of 1-10, rated its viability as a seven.

“We talk about it like it’s dead.

There’s a lot of disinformation,” he said. “It used to be so horrible. But that’s old news. I came back from a boat ride (recently) and saw a guy swimming in the river. It’s a degree thing. We still have fecal stuff in the river. Is it dirtier than the Mississippi River? It’s never been Perrier but I’m seeing people boating and making more contact.”

EDUCATION Boundary Changes Approved Mayor Vincent Gray recently approved a task force’s final recommendations to make changes to outdated school boundary lines in the District.

In giving his nod of approval on August 21, Gray – whose term ends in December – said the sole motive of the changes has been to establish a rational way of assigning schools for students.

“I am accepting the advisory committee’s recommendations to continue the tremendous progress we have made in recent years reforming public education in the District,” said Gray, 71.

“While change like this is never easy, it is in the best interest of the District – and especially our children – to move forward with the recommended policies and boundaries.”

With the new changes set to go into effect the start of the 2015-16 school year, boundaries will be reassigned so that each household is designated an elementary, middle and high school. As a result, students will have to attend schools assigned to them.

DCPS Promotes 8 to Principal Roles Eight new leaders, trained through a year-old leadership fellowship launched by the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), have been assigned to principal positions for the new academic term.

The new principals have spent the last 18 months in both training and leadership roles at District schools in preparation for a full-time job as part of the Mary Jane Patterson (MJP) Fellowship.

“DCPS is filled with hard-working, focused, driven and passionate educators, many of whom we know would make great principals given the right training and support,” said Chancellor Kaya Henderson, 44. “To capitalize on this pool of talent, we began a new fellowship to target and build the leadership skills of future school leaders and to keep them in D.C., serving DCPS students. Now, we have eight new awesome principals who are trained, ready and excited in their new roles,” she said. “I am so proud of these inaugural members of our MJP Fellowship and can’t wait to see them in action as principals.”

Eric Bethel, who will serve as principal at Turner Elementary School in Southeast, has worked since 2002 in DCPS as a teacher, master educator and assistant principal.

The native Washingtonian who’s always aspired to become a principal, received his master’s degree in elementary education from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

He said that one of the rea-

sons he pursued the fellowship is because it centers on fulfilling his goal of school leadership.

“It was like training for the Olympics – really intense,” said Bethel.

Afterschool Programs During the 2014-15 term, Afterschool Programs will once again be offered in 57 schools.

The programs, which come under management of the Office of Out-of-School Time Programs, will also eventually offer other schools a variety of afterschool opportunities for students.

Back to School – Mix of Excitement, Anticipation

By Dorothy Rowley WI Staff Writer Like Edward Heff, a senior at Phelps Architecture, Construction, and Engineering High School in Northeast, Maisha Riddlesprigger, principal at Ketcham Elementary School in Southeast, could hardly contain her excitement about returning to school on Monday, August 25.

With the summer break officially over, Edward 17, had started to seriously consider his goals beyond high school, while Riddlesprigger, 35, anxiously looked forward to the tour she’d give Chancellor Kaya Henderson of her newly-spruced up building that included an opportunity to glimpse the instruction methods of some of the best teachers the District has to offer.

“Believe it or not, I was able to sleep a little last night, as I was really excited about beginning my senior year,” said Edward, who wants to attend college in Oklahoma to study architecture.

“Throughout the summer, I was coming over [to the school] to do some volunteer work in the office, and before I knew it, the first day of school had arrived.”

Riddlesprigger, who’s in her second year of leadership at Ketcham, described the first day back to classes as one filled with excitement and commitment.

“We’ve hit the ground running. Our parents are eager about what their children will be learning, our PTA got together and decided that we’d have new school uniform colors,” said Riddlesprigger. “We made great gains in math and reading last year, so we’re just excited to continue those gains as we are about continuing our blended learning model which is computer-based learning.”

Shangla Joseph, who counted among a cadre of Ketcham parents who accompanied their children on the first day, expressed both excitement and hope about the 2014-15 term.

With her son Jerome beginning the 4th grade, Joseph admitted looking forward to a lot of improvements from her son.

“He did pretty well last year, but he knows I expect a lot better this time,” said Joseph.

“I like that the school building looks absolutely great, because it’s important that the learning environments be as good as

the [academics] our children are [provided].”

In making her traditional first day back-to-school rounds at several buildings, Henderson took the time between stepping inside classrooms for an closeup of the interactions teachers had with their students, and their methods of instruction, to high-fived students and asked others about what they hoped to accomplish during the new academic term.

Looking relaxed and ready to forge ahead in her third year at the helm of the 45,000-student system, Henderson, at one point in her friendly banter, shared with Phelps senior Tyner Jackson,17 – who wants to attend Barnard College in New York to study engineering or psychology – that she’s a native New Yorker.

“I’m from Mt. Vernon, just outside [New York] City,” Henderson said, flashing an infectious smile.

Henderson then turned her attention to the handful of reporters who tagged along, for a discussion about her plans for an exemplary academic year.

“There are a host of [objectives] happening within the DCPS (District of Columbia Public Schools) system that I’m really proud of,” said Hender-

son, 44.

“We’re going to be offering more algebra, more foreign languages, more extracurricular activities – with more social and emotional supports in those areas,” she said. “We’ve invested quite a bit in our advanced and enriched learning, so there will be more than 150 AP (Advanced Placement) courses this year being taught across the system.”

Henderson added that with the addition of blending learning courses at schools all over the District, more teachers as well as “more different types of teachers” have been hired.

She also noted that because her administration recently invested $350,000 in music instruments, students will have access to better instruments, and that with more than $5 million having been poured in programs to improve student satisfaction, there will be more opportunities for student field trips and travels abroad.

“We’ll be assisting students with more hands-on activities through internships and mentorships so that they can graduate and be ready to move into careers,” Henderson said, adding that overall, “tending to stu-

The All-Seeing Eye

The City of Greenbelt recently joined a growing number of municipalities that plan or have already installed automated license plate readers. The mounted reader, which is capable of scanning 1,000 license plates a second, will operate 24 hours a day.

During discussion about approving an almost $20,000 grant, Mayor Emmett Jordan and Mayor Pro Tem Judith Davis focused on the reader’s ability to help fight crime by identifying stolen vehicles or drivers with drugs, or outstanding tickets and warrants, but civil libertarians and privacy rights advocates have raised concerns about the potential for abuse and invasion of privacy.

Although the technology is relatively new, about 70 percent of America’s police departments use these readers mounted on the back of their cars. The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups are worried that this type of surveillance can be used by police to track the movements of law-abiding citizens and there are also qualms about violations of privacy of ordinary citizens when police departments hold onto information about drivers’ locations and license plate numbers for more than 30 days.

The Greenbelt Police Department is one of those police agencies which sends its data to the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center, which stores the information for a year. The Center for Investigative Reporting conducted a 2012 investigation which indicated that California-based Vigilant Solutions, a private manufacturer of license plate recognition systems, has been storing its own license plate reader information in an enormous national database called the National Vehicle Location Service. This service isn’t governed by the few privacy regulations public and government agencies use. And furthermore, the report noted, Vigilant Solutions sells drivers’ data to police which has created a loophole the company uses to sidestep the limited regulations that exist to protect people from improper, retroactive police spying.

Anyone troubled about the unwarranted intrusion into our lives by various arms of the government should be uneasy about the continued erosion of our privacy. Despite assurances to the contrary, we hope Greenbelt residents will keep pressure on city officials to have appropriate checks and balances in place to eliminate any possibility of the abuse or mishandling of this data.

U.S. in Iraq

As fighters for the Islamic State of Iraq in the Levant (ISIL) continue their lightning-quick invasion and capture of significant sections of Northern Iraq – and their murderous rampage against anyone who’s not Sunni – the U.S. is being dragged back into Iraq.

America recently launched bombing raids on ISIL positions around the Mosul Dam and to free fleeing Yazidi tribespeople trapped by ISIL fighters. Just last week, an ISIL fighter decapitated U.S. journalist James Foley on video in an effort to force America to stop the bombing.

President Barack Obama has vowed to rid Iraq of ISIL, which he described as a cancer that must be removed.

The U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 to remove Saddam Hussein helped plant the seeds for Iraq’s current crisis. And America might not be in this position had it kicked out or reined in former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He’s to blame because he manipulated the political process, marginalized and alienated Sunnis, sidelined anyone he couldn’t control or buy, and purged the military of capable Sunni commanders which left the military weakened and vulnerable. Fortunately, he’s been forced out and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is attempting to form a unity government.

Al-Maliki’s incompetence and greed has left the U.S. to clean up his mess as ISIL threatens to overrun the country. ISIL already controls about one-third of Syria and seeks to form an Islamic state – a caliphate – in areas it controls.

Americans are tired of war so we hope President Obama doesn’t widen the scope of U.S. involvement in Iraq.

Eliminating the Digital Divide

Thanks for the wonderful “Back to School Supplement” in the August 21, 2014 edition of The Washington Informer.

All of the articles proved to be very informative, but two really stood out for me. The first one: “Comcast Commits to Eliminating Digital Divide” by D. Kevin McNeir.

I’ve been hearing about this program for years, but his article was the first I have read with specifics, and I think it’s great. I’m not a big fan of Comcast; I think they charge too much for their services, but I have to give them some credit for this program; it’s definitely needed, especially since some schools are requiring laptops and tablets instead of books for students, and some teachers are requiring homework to be done over the Internet. I hope all parents in need of athome Internet services take full advantage of this program.

The second article was by Stacy Brown, “Academy of Hope offers Second Chance.” I wish this charter school nothing but success. I can’t imagine what it must be like to be an adult and not be able read, or do simple math, or even write a letter. This is something that is needed in the community and I hope everyone who knows someone who would The Washington Informer

benefit from attending such a school tells them about it.

Take Responsibility – Vote!

I am, like so many others, outraged by what happened to Michael Brown, the 18-year-old who was shot down by the white police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. After reading Barrington Salmon’s article, “Unrest Roils Ferguson” in the August 21 edition where he lists all of the young blacks who have been killed recently and stating that the judicial system has not held anyone accountable for those killings, it’s unconscionable that nothing is really being done about it.

Unfortunately for us, things will not change until we change.

I say this because those who have the authority to ensure our lawful rights as citizens will not take us seriously until we take our own lives seriously. I could go on and on about how we as black people are portrayed by the media, the language we use toward one another, and the ideas that permeate our communities that what we have now is all we will ever have.

We can change all of this by using the ballot. Yes, the ballot, the most powerful tool against

any form of injustice, especially in America. We have the right to vote and we must use it, and take that right seriously. I’m not just talking about Ferguson, Missouri, where the population is majority black but has no black elected officials, I’m talking about everywhere, even here in Southeast Washington, where I read that of the 53,000 or so registered voters less than three percent participated in the last local election; that’s what I am talking about, that’s the mentality I’m talking about, and that mentality has got to change!

Residents of Ferguson Need to Make a Change Michael Jackon’s “Man in the Mirror” is very appropriate for the situation going on in Ferguson, Mo. Regardless of what happens during all the legal wrangling, one thing is certain: the residents of Ferguson have had all the power they ever needed to make the change they have been seeking. And they haven’t used it.

Some have argued that Ferguson is symbolic of “inner

city America.” They argue that Ferguson is about racism, hopelessness, structural and systemic discrimination, and Blacks who feel helpless.

Well, it’s kind of hard to make these arguments when Blacks are almost 70 percent of Ferguson’s population. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, there are 14,297 Blacks and 6,206 Whites; 22 percent live in poverty; the mayor is White; there is only one Black on a 6-member city council (.096 percent); three Blacks out of 53 policemen (5.6 per-

cent); and the St. Louis suburb is the sixth most segregated city in the U.S. As a native of St. Louis, I worked closely with my friend, Freeman R. Bosley, Jr. in his successful efforts to become the first Black Circuit Clerk for the 22nd Judicial Circuit in 1983 and the first Black mayor in 1993 (with 66 percent of the vote).

Blacks were a majority of the city; so I thoroughly understand the power of the vote.

Juxtapose this with the voting history of Ferguson. In this

year’s elections, only 12.3 percent of eligible voters actually voted (17 percent White, 6 percent Black). That’s compared to 11.7 percent in 2013; and 8.9 percent in 2012.

How can one argue that Blacks have no power?

A more accurate statement is that Blacks have refused to exercise their power. You can’t blame that on the “White man” or “racism” or the “system.” In the Wizard of Oz, the Lion already had courage; the Tin man already had a heart, and the Scare-

crow already had a brain; but they had all been so psychologically abused that they couldn’t see the power they already had.

The Wizard just simply reminded them of what they already had. Upon the prompting from the Wizard, they then began to actually believe again in themselves and the power lying dormant inside of them.

Many across the country are asking: What do the residents of Ferguson want? Thus far, their

Our Inevitable, Everlasting ‘Racial Divide’ The flurry of polls released last week revealed that sharp disagreements exist between Black and White Americans about the killing of Michael Brown by a White police officer in Ferguson, Mo. on August 9, about the street protests that have followed, and about several issues of how police interact with civilians.

In surveys conducted by, among others, the Pew Research Center for the People & the

Press, by the New York Times and CBS, by the Huffington Post and YouGov, by the Washington Post, and by the Gallup Organization, Blacks were much more likely than Whites to: declare that the shooting of Michael Brown was unjustified; support President Obama’s response to the killing and the protests; believe that the incident raises important racial issues; be sharply critical of the conduct of the Ferguson police since the shooting; and have little confidence in

the subsequent local and state investigations.

All of which, of course, recalls the racial divides of similar or greater dimensions over the Trayvon Martin killing, trial and verdict; over the Jordan Davis killing, trial and verdict, and on and on all the way back down the well of America’s tangled racial history.

But, don’t get me wrong. I’m not one for wringing my hands at the latest display of our racial divide. Indeed, one cannot expect

otherwise of a nation founded and maintained for so long on the stark “racial divide” of Negro Slavery and then a pervasive, brutal legalized segregation that lasted deep into the 20th century. Hallelujah for all the progress that’s been made since the 1960s, though a raft of data show a massive backsliding on the economic progress Blacks made in the 1990s. But a stark “racial divide” on numerous serious questions remains just as it was in the 1960s: as American as apple pie.

And, just as was the case in the 1960s, our stark racial divide on these issues is White America’s doing. Or rather, to be precise, it’s the doing of a diminishing but still significant segment of White Americans who resent the expansion of opportunity to Blacks, other Americans of color, women and gays and lesbians. In that regard, it’s very much worth noting that the Pew survey found that 62 percent of

Differences in Black and White Public opinion polls confirm a fact that has been documented in instances ranging from the O.J. Simpson verdict to recent events in Ferguson: When it comes to race, Blacks and Whites largely view events through a different set of lenses.

Several recent polls provided yet more proof of this disheartening trend.

According to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll,

more than half of Black Americans polled – 57 percent – said the killing of the unarmed, 18-year-old Michael Brown by Ferguson, Mo. Police Officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9 was “not justified.” Among Whites, 25 percent said the shooting death was unjustified.

In addition, 31 percent of White Americans, and 71 percent of Blacks, said they think police are generally more likely to use deadly force against a person of color than a White person.

The performance of Gov. Jay Nixon, a Democrat, also received mixed reviews, so to speak. He mobilized the Missouri State Highway Patrol and then activated the Missouri National Guard after declaring a state of emergency and imposing a curfew. Blacks were twice as likely as Whites to say involving the National Guard only made matters worse.

Only a quarter of Blacks nationally are satisfied with Gov. Nixon’s actions, while nearly half said Nixon’s performance The Washington Informer

in the aftermath of the shooting was unsatisfactory. In contrast, Whites were divided: A third were satisfied and a third dissatisfied.

Not surprisingly, Blacks, Obama’s most loyal bloc, continue to back him by large margins.

Sixty percent of African Americans said they were satisfied with the president’s actions; 20 percent said they were dissatisfied. Whites were split, with 35 percent in support of President Obama and 39 percent dissatisfied.

The New York Times poll showed that 10 percent of those surveyed thought race relations have improved since Obama has been in office, 52 percent felt they are about the same as before and 35 percent said race relations have gotten worse under Obama. Of those saying things had gotten worse, 40 percent were White and 21 percent were African American.

From ‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’ to ‘Hands Up, Vote’ Out of every momentous national tragedy that Black Americans have continued to endure in the United States, there has always emerged a redeeming moment to push harder and further on the long journey toward freedom, justice and equality. The continuing unrestrained fatal police killings of Black American males in St. Louis County, Missouri is now described as part of a national “open season” to kill

Blacks in America. What should we do now? What is the redeeming action that should be taken?

In the aftermath of the murders of Michael Brown, Eric Gardner, Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis and so many others, what should be our next course of action? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., writing in his last book, pointed the way.

Writing in Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? Dr. King stated in 1967: “The persistence of racism in depth and the dawning awareness that

Negro demands will necessitate structural changes in society have generated a new phase of white resistance in the North and South.’’

Dr. King’s prophetic words, written 47 years ago, are equally true today. With the “browning of America,” there has been a steady increase in racially-motivated police violence against Blacks and Latinos.

around the world. It is just the latest example of a society that refuses to end racial oppression or acknowledge its racist past.

I remember that Dr. King responded to police brutality in the 1960s by telling his followers: “I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations.

Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the

winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.”

As we say of faith-witnessing in the Black church tradition, “Lord, have mercy, we sure have received a lot of unearned suffering…… now it is time for us to get some redemption.” This bring me to my central point.

The Environmental Movement’s ‘Billionaires Club’ I have often wondered about the zest and ambition of environmental groups such as the Sierra Club, Green Peace, Environmental Defense Fund, etc. In all, there are at least 60 entities that pound the federal government through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Congress who oversees the EPA. They are equally aggressive with state and local governments. They hate industry as well

as farmers, architects, engineers and construction. In fact, they despise anything that advances our economy and improves the quality of life for all of America. They have counterparts elsewhere in the world but they are rather mild when compared to American environmentalists.

I think the rationale for these groups and some political figures has been detected. It is all about the money. I’m talking about big money. Many of the funders are billionaires.

The U.S. Senate’s minori-

ty staff for the Environmental and Public Works has recently issued a report: “The Chain of Environmental Command: How a Club of Billionaires and Their Foundations Control the Environmental Movement and Obama’s EPA.” This 92- page report breaks it all down. It shows how they filter billions of dollars into various environmental nonprofits. They also select their like-minded friends to work at key positions in the EPA and pursue their agendas. These “plants” will play a role in the

funding of nonprofits through the granting of your tax dollars (EPA grants). Some would say that much of the funding can be considered money laundering.

The report said, “This report examines in detail the mechanisms and methods of a far-left environmental machine that has been erected around a small group of powerful and active millionaires and billionaires who exert tremendous sway over a colossal effort. Although startling in its findings, the report covers only a small fraction of

the amount of money that is being secreted and moved around.

It would be virtually impossible to examine this system completely given the enormity of this carefully coordinated effort and the lack of transparency surrounding it.

“The failure to openly acknowledge this force and the silence of the media with whom they coordinate further emphasize the fact that until today, the Billionaire’s Club operated in rel-

Dead, Dumb, Dumber and Dumber There is absolutely nothing that was done by either Eric Garner or Michael Brown on the days they were murdered that would justify their deaths.

Nothing.

Both Black men were illegally executed by White police officers under color of law. Neither man had been arrested, or indicted, let alone convicted of any crime. Had either of them been guilty of the most heinous crime

of which they might have been accused those days, there’s no chance they could have possibly received a death sentence.

Maybe Garner was selling loose cigarettes on the street without a license. Maybe Brown walked out of a convenience store with a handful of cigarillos.

Cigars? Cigarettes?

The sheer pettiness of the alleged crimes indicts the cops involved and renders their victims, martyrs.

But in Ferguson, Missouri the situation is replete with blunders

and stupidity. Let’s start with Michael Brown. I was taught that Black men should never so much as jaywalk, so as to not give race-hating White cops a justifiable excuse for intervening, possibly even making an arrest.

So here’s Michael Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson strolling down the middle of the street, just as big as you please, according to Johnson’s account.

So here come police officer Darren Wilson in his cruiser, and he tells the men in the coarsest language imaginable to get out of

the street and onto the sidewalk, according to Johnson’s account.

That was dumb. Once as a reporter I was covering a riotous situation, walking on the sidewalk holding my press pass aloft when a cop cocked his shotgun and shouted at me: “Just give me a reason, nigger. Just give me a reason.” I guess no one ever told Brown and Johnson, White cops are often itching for Black guys to give them a reason to shoot.

What happened next is in dispute, and Officer Wilson’s story has yet to come out. He has been

in hiding, comforted by other cops and by the Ku Klux Klan which praised him for killing the Black guy, and spearheaded a drive raising a total of $300,000 so far for the murderous cop’s defense.

The Ferguson police continued the tragic farce, their stupidity only exceeded by their cruelty. Apparently no medical assistance was requested for Brown who had been shot six times by Wilson. Apparently no incident report was called

hen it comes to luxury resorts and spas, one of the newest kids on the block has already aced the competition.

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Middleburg, Virginia, Sheila Johnson’s one-year-old and $130 million Salamander Resort & Spa counts as a venture in which she said stands as one of her proudest accomplishments.

“Personally, I’m most proud of raising my daughter Paige and son Brett,” Johnson said. “Professionally, I’m most proud of opening my Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Virginia.”

A hands-on owner, Johnson, 65, wears many hats and those who know or work with the Black Entertainment Television (BET) network co-founder, said she wears each of them well.

A rarity on Wall Street and corporate America, Johnson, an African-American woman, reportedly has a net worth of more than $1 billion.

She owns a stake in three major sports teams, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the NHL’s Washington Capitals.

She’s also produced several films, including a 2010 documentary called, “The Other City,” about HIV/AIDS in the District, and Johnson served as co-producer of the critically-acclaimed 2013 movie, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.”

As Johnson prepares to celebrate the spa’s first anniversary on Friday, August 29, it’s easy to understand why guests, including the former governor of Virginia, have falling in love with the sprawling 168-room compound that sits on 340 densely wooded acres about 35 minutes from Dulles International Airport.

“This will become a resort of choice for the Washington, D.C. market with a focus on health, nutrition, exercise and relaxation and, of course, great food and Virginia wine,” said former Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell shortly before the spa opened.

“We’re excited about the contribution the resort is going to make, and we appreciate people like Sheila Johnson who have the vision to build, grow, create jobs, take risks and continue to foster the wonderful spirit of entrepreneurism,” said McDonnell, who served one term from 2010 to 2014.

With perfectly-manicured lawns accentuated by deep purple and white wild flower meadows, the Grand Entrance to the spa easily attracts with brick and stucco buildings topped with high-pitched roofs.

However, the picturesque entrance proves to be just a teaser for the 22,000-squarefoot spa inside which includes 14 treatment rooms with private outdoor terraces and fireplaces and a couple’s suite.

“After BET was sold, I wanted to start a business that I was passionate about,” Johnson said. “And, I’m passionate about hospitality. So, I founded my own hotel company to provide a warm, welcoming atmosphere for our guests.”

The venue includes a fitness center that would make the owners of Gold’s Gym or any of the country’s top exercise clubs green with envy. It also features a salon where guests can relax while being pampered with a manicure or a pedicure as well as a new hair style.

Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Johnson, a trained classical violinist, received a bachelor of arts in music from the University of Illinois. She also holds 10 honorary doctorate degrees.

In 1969, she married Robert L. Johnson and together the two founded BET, which became the most influential black television network in the world under their watch.

A global ambassador for CARE, a humanitarian organization headquartered in her hometown of Merrifield, Virginia, Johnson relentlessly helps to fight poverty around the globe.

A fervent supporter of education and the arts, she serves on the Board of Governors of Parsons The New School for Design in New York, and as a member of the Leadership Council at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Johnson, who married Virginia Judge William T. Newman, Jr. in 2005, has also rallied support to help overcome the burden of infectious diseases in Africa.

In 2013, in recognition of her entrepreneurial success, Johnson received an invitation to serve as a judge for Ernst & Young’s World Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the only judge on the international panel to represent the United States.

Despite all of the success she’s achieved, Johnson said she never saw any of it coming.

“But, if you don’t dream and strive for the top, you won’t succeed,” she said.

“I have worked hard to attain a level of success and I understand that I am in a fortunate position. Yet, it has often been a struggle to break through the glass ceilings long associated with both African Americans and women,” Johnson said.

Finally, she said it’s important for black-owned businesses to develop a reputation of giving within their communities and, it’s vital to make time for family.

“It can be tough, but I always make time for my husband, daughter and son,” she said.

“My children and I like to build in time together on trips.”

More than 100 girls from across the D.C. metropolitan area enjoyed an afternoon of music, food, and games at the Viva La Girls Spa during its grand reopening celebration last month. In May 2013, the local business opened its doors on an up-andcoming business corridor in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

“It’s essential that the girls have a safe place to build their self-esteem,” said Karima Ball, who co-founded Viva La Girls Spa with her friend LaTasha Resper.

“We want to emphasize that all girls are beautiful. At the spa, they can be girls, play with their friends, make beauty products, and take some of our enrichment courses. This is where they learn to take care of themselves,” said Ball, 37, a Northeast resident.

Upon entering the venue and walking through red doors, the tiny guests painted animals on their faces, checked out their peers’ custom wares, listened to remarks from local women entrepreneurs, and grooved to the sounds of Chi Chi Monet and DJ Beauty & The Beatz. The event on July 12 also included appearances from Shannon O’Brien, Miss Maryland International 2013, Crystal Rush, Miss Delaware 2014, Mya Lamp, Little Miss Maryland 2014, and Shenetta Malkia, Ms. Maryland United States 2014.

Malkia said she relished the opportunity to learn about the career goals of some of the young girls who visited the spa that afternoon.

press their beauty among their peers,” said Malkia, 34. “We must encourage them to stay true to themselves at a young age. They need that encouragement to stay away from negative influences. To see this vision for this spa come to light is beautiful,” said Malkia, a Bowie, Maryland resident.

Nancy Holly, an analyst in a federal government agency and mother of a six-year-old, shared Malkia’s sentiments. She chatted with other parents as a nail technician filed and polished her daughter’s nails. Holly said her daughter later frolicked with new friends.

“My daughter’s walking around doing her own thing,” said Holly.

“This is the type of activity that she needs. Things like this give the girls opportunities to network and see how their friends do similar things. I would love to come back,” said Holly who lives in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Some girls like Haven Clay showcased their creations and engaged guests in conversation throughout much of the afternoon. In 2012, Haven, 11, launched Bracelet Haven, her custom jewelry business, with her mother’s help. Bright red, blue, green, and gold bracelets lined the table where the mother-daughter team set up their space.

“You have to be really creative when making bracelets because they really show the personalities of the people that wear them,” said Haven.

“Some people bought my jewelry and it made me feel good. I eventually want to be a photographer, fashion designer, and dancer,” said Haven who lives in Upper Marlboro.

Aspirin is your co-worker. Sodium bicarbonate, your best friend. And stress? It’s your roommate and constant companion.

Maybe it’s the up-and-down of the economy that’s made you feel this way. Maybe it’s the uncertainty that accompanies today’s workplace or perhaps it’s a combination of all of the above, but you’re a bundle of ready-to-scream. You need “The Biology of Beating Stress” by Jeanne Ricks.

Your grandfather was a hard worker.

Your mother is a businesswoman and you’re a Type A person, just like them. You might have their entrepreneurial genes, but genetics are not what drives stress and makes you miserable. Your environment, the people in it, and how you feel about those factors is what makes you seize up and grit your teeth in anxiety and irritation. That also causes belly fat, and it can make you physically sick.

In order to start ridding your life of stress, you need to first acknowledge that you’re fed up. “Be in the moment,” says Ricks, “and not on auto-pilot.”

Next, learn to use the “STOP Technique,” which requires that you tell yourself to STOP whatever you’re doing, “absorb the scene around you,” relax, and breathe.

On that note, learning to breathe properly (which Ricks says “most of us” don’t know

“The Biology of Beating Stress” might seem to fit in the new-agey column. It would be less so without its cheerleader atmosphere and the abundance of exclamation points!! but, that aside, what you’ll find here is sound advice.

At issue, however, is that it’s a lot of common sense and information that’s been heard before. If, in fact, you’ve read anything about stress-reduction, you’ve read this book. Still, author Jeanne Ricks’ instructions are good reminders; they’re accessible, easy to understand, and can be implemented with little-tono money and almost no experience in this kind of self-improvement.

And there, I think, is where the appeal of this book lies: its ease-of-use means quick help if you’re tearing your hair out. And if that’s what you need now, skipping “The Biology of Beating Stress” may be a bitter pill to swallow.WI

Home Transformed into Art Lovers Treasure Trove Margery Goldberg’s Zenith Gallery among D.C.’s Finest

But one homeowner in Northwest decided to do something unique, combining conventional design with an eclectic array of fine art adorning every nook and cranny in order to transform her abode into a veritable gallery.

“Converting my home into an art gallery was actually based on the established tradition of patronism that became popular in places like Europe where artists and potential benefactors shared encounters in a person’s home in efforts to nurture the artist,” said Margery Goldberg who opened her Zenith Gallery in 1978. “We look for exceptional artists at different stages of their careers and feature their work – some have been with us for 30 years and are well-known but others have just arrived on the scene,” said Goldberg, 64, a successful sculptor in her own right.

The gallery has been in several locations before the founder and owner, Goldberg, decided to move it to her home. Along with a consulting service, the Rochester, New York native helps artists from the District and around the globe in their efforts to place their works with corporations, institutions and residences.

“There are three areas in Margery’s home: a sculpture garden in the rear of the home as well as art in the public space in the front yard; a salon on the main floor that blends the necessities of home with various art media and then the second floor where art merges with the bedrooms and bathroom,” said

The basement serves as Goldberg’s office, work space and now through September 6, as a place to showcase the works of three artists who hail from California, Nigeria and D.C: Leslie Printis, Doba Alofabi and Chris Malone, respectively. The show, “The Passion of the Media and the Process from a Global Perspective,” opened in June and has been extended several times due to its success.

“I am on a journey of discovery, using paper in place of paint to do my bidding,” Printis said. “To remove [myself] from the comfort of realism to the unfamiliar territory of abstract design was a huge leap for me.

It took me two years to master a technique that would prolong the life of collage work and it’s this knowledge that sets me apart from other mixed media artists,” said Printis who first established herself as an oil painter.

Goldberg received her bachelor of arts from George Washington University in 1972 but started sculpting with hard woods like walnut and mahogany at the age of 10. Her current 50,000 square-foot complex has an estimated 2,000 pieces of art, the majority of which can be purchased.

“We once had a wonderful art center on Rhode Island Avenue in Northwest but eventually lost it in a zoning dispute with the city,” Goldberg said. “It was a place where artists could learn from one another and provided a safe, open space to show their

One man from Southwest said he always knew that he wanted to become an artist.

“When other little boys in grade school wanted to be policemen, fireman [or] astronauts, I knew that I was an artist,” said Chris Malone. “At an early age I started teaching myself how to sculpt in clay and was lucky enough to have adults that never limited me – they allowed me to follow a creative path.”

Having his work online captured Goldberg’s attention and helped the Nigerian-born artist secure his work at the Zenith Gallery.

“I used to scribble with charcoal that I’d taken from stoves to render faces on walls until a high school teacher took an interest in me, tutored me and filled the void created after the early death of my father,” said Afolabi, a naturalized U.S. citizen who lives in Brooklyn, New York.“Still, the first imprint was my mother – a beautiful, versatile dancer, who danced for the gods. Art is for me not about going after silver or gold or even the bread I put on my table – it’s my totality, my entirety and my entity,” said Afolabi who generally uses acrylics and describes his work as abstract impressionism. Nation’s Football Classic Returns to D.C.

Howard, Morehouse Set to Battle for Final Time

By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer There are sports rivalries that have proven to be legendary.

In baseball, there’s none bigger than the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Basketball has the heated rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics while, locally, hockey boasts bad blood between the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

And, when it comes to college football, particularly in the African-American community, not many rivalries stand out like the competition between the Howard University Bison and the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers.

“Its football at its best,” said Erik Moses, the managing director of Events DC’s Sports and Entertainment Division, the organizer of the annual AT&T Nation’s Football Classic, which pits the Bison against the Maroon Tigers on Saturday, September 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Southeast.

Moses said fans of the historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) might be witnessing the match up for a final time during this year’s fourth annual classic.

“They’ve had three great games in the classic and we’d like to believe that the rivalry has been resurrected and now it’s time to change things up for next year,” Moses said.

He said Events DC will soon provide fans and others an opportunity to participate in the decision on which teams will compete in the 2015 classic.

“Make no mistake, the classic will not stop. The teams may be different because we’re just switching things up and we should have an announcement in January on that,” Moses said.

In the meantime, for Howard, the classic should set the tone for the upcoming season, said Head Coach Gary Harrell, who noted that a lot rides on the big game.

“It is one of those unwritten rules. This game is very import-

ant,” said Harrell, 42, who’s in his fourth season as head coach.

“The alumni want to win and we want to win this game as well. This rivalry goes a long way. We have been successful in it, and we want to make sure we continue to uphold the standards and level of play that are going to give us a chance to win this year’s game as well.”

The Bison scored victories in the first three classic meetings, including two down-to-the-wire wins in 2011 and 2012. “They’ve all been really good contests,” Moses said. “Last year, Howard jumped out to a big lead, but Morehouse came back.”

Morehouse Head Coach Rich Freeman said he’s appreciated the experience his team has gained by playing in the classic.

Despite the losses, Morehouse has come away from each game a little better because of it, Freeman said.

“I really felt the embrace of the D.C. community. People are aware of what Morehouse means and, of course, what Howard means to D.C., what both schools, respectively, mean to our country,” said Freeman, 39, a 17-year coaching veteran who’s guided Morehouse since 2007. “We are very much rooted in academic tradition and excellence and have prominent alums. We felt it when we went out to dinner. We were well received. And, I saw good crowds in the three games we played.”

A staple of the classic has been the various events that lead up to the big game.

This year’s events officially kickoff on Thursday, September 11 and run through Sunday, September 14. Included are a Presidential Symposium, an AT&T kickoff rally, a Pepsi Fan Festival, and a myriad of parties and receptions.

“What happens off the field is just as important with all the events going on,” said Morehouse running back Shelton Hamilton.

“With the fans really involved, it is the biggest game we play each year. It’s a great experience for my teammates and I,”

Integrity is defined as doing the right thing in a reliable way, a moral compass that doesn’t waver, even when nobody is watching. You will always do the right thing; stick with it, because that’s who you really are from within like an orange. Once you squeeze an orange – you get the real thing – orange juice.

This metaphor from Dr. Wayne Dyer fits this principle perfectly. Dyer is an internationally-renowned author and speaker in the field of self-development. He’s the author of more than 30 books, has many audio programs and videos, and has appeared on thousands of television and radio shows.

Over the past few years, I’ve followed Dyer’s lectures. This particular message delivered by him struck a chord in me; it captured my attention and caused me to reflect.

He starts off by talking about how one comes to have unconditional love on the inside, no matter what, why one person may love unconditionally and another doesn’t; he said, “It’s what’s on the inside of them, what’s in you will come out.”

In his video, he talks about how you take an orange and squeeze it – squeeze as hard as you can and ask yourself what will come – orange juice!

Apple juice or grapefruit juice will never come out of an orange.

Why does only orange juice come out? He said a little girl sitting up front said; “Well that’s dumb!

That’s what’s inside, it has to come out!” Now that’s the truth, the reason that orange juice comes out

when you squeeze an orange, is because that’s what’s inside.”

Let’s extend the metaphor and someone squeezes you? What’s inside of you when someone says something about you, and you don’t like it, someone behaves toward you in a way you find offensive, somebody does or says something to you, and you feel hurt by it? Then out comes anger, hatred, bitterness, tension, fear, anxiety, or stress. When you waver, and change, you lose your integrity. You no longer are keeping the commitment you made to yourself to show love despite the situation.

Immediately you say the reason that comes out of me is because of how he said it, but the reality is, that what comes out, is what’s inside.

Human beings can change what’s inside. You’re not an orange. The Holy Spirit makes each of us new, born again! Scripture says, “Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

What comes out when someone squeezes you the wrong way?

Suppose you are a Christian and you show love at all times, until one day, someone is speaking to you in a negative tone. Do you lose it?

We’re not perfect, it may happen, get back on track. We serve a forgiving God. Does the love you possess fully fill you from within, or do you still have seeds of bitterness left behind. When we keep our com-

response has been “justice;” meaning they want the White policeman who killed Michael Brown, Darren Wilson, indicted, convicted, and sent to jail. Well, that is out the control of any one person. The facts of what happened must be established and then let the justice system function.

The fact that Blacks have the power of the vote is undeniable.

They have the power to control the political climate in Ferguson – that is no fairytale. The question is do they have the courage to look at the man in the mirror and make that change? Do they have the heart to change their apathetic approach to voting as a perpetual tribute to Michael Brown? Do they have the brains

There’s a great deal about the surveys’ findings that makes them all worth pondering. So, too, does one extraordinary event that occurred last week outside of Ferguson that should be used as “reference reading” to them.

That event involved a Kansas City police officer, Marc Catron, who, to support the Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, posted a photo of someone he thought was Michael Brown on his Facebook page.

But it was the wrong person.

Catron’s careless mistake represents the vile compulsion that drove him to do what he did: He wanted to strike out at the

that race relations have improved over the last half century, including attitudes toward interracial marriages. Amid such progress, however, there is undeniable evidence that Blacks and Whites look at racially-tinged events from a different perspective.

A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that 80 percent of African Americans say the shooting in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson raises important issues about race that merit discussion. By contrast,

Just like the Wizard did nothing to change the conditions of Dorothy and her friends, there is nothing America needs to do for Ferguson that they can’t do for themselves. They have everything they need. Maybe the death of Brown will be the reminder of what has been lying dormant in the residents of Ferguson all along.

Maybe after all of the marches are over, they will be, as Fannie Lou Hamer put it, “sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

Ferguson has non-partisan elections, meaning no votes are cast based on party affiliation, but vote for the individual. The residents of Ferguson need to begin to run – and vote for – candidates who can best repre-

sent their interests. The government can provide tax credits and other tax incentives for businesses to locate to Ferguson. Social service agencies can provide job training programs. And the federal government will even help provide much needed training of their police force.

But in the end, Ferguson will have to look at the man – and the woman – in the mirror and make that change.WI

It showed a young Black man with a wad of dollar bills in his mouth and a smug look on his face, pointing a gun at the camera. Catron then wrote beneath it this caption: “I’m sure Michael Brown is innocent and just misunderstood. I’m sure he is a pillar of the Ferguson community.”

However, the person in the photo wasn’t Michael Brown, but a 20-something Black Oregon resident who’s now under arrest for a vicious murder.

Marc Catron’s mistake was the more revealing because police officers, one would think, are trained to see far better than ordinary civilians an individuals’ distinguishing facial and bodily features. That Catron didn’t make the distinction indicates he really wasn’t using his eyes to search for a photo of Michael Brown. Instead, he subcon-

sciously fastened on a photo of a Black youth who “fit” his racist imagination.

In other words, Catron’s “mistake” exemplifies, as even a cursory scan of conservative opinion columns and conservative reader responses in the blogosphere shows, several themes of the “old” racist impulse that rise to the surface every time White police officers unjustifiably beat or kill Blacks in questionable circumstances: The most important of these involves criminalizing not only the victim but also Blacks as a group, while declaring the perpetrator of the violence as the victim.

Fiercely challenging that kind of a response is worth being “divided” over. WI

only 37 percent of Whites – less than half the ratio of Blacks – feel that way. In addition, among Whites, 47 percent feel race is getting more attention than it deserves in the Michael Brown case. But only 18 percent of Blacks share that view.

According to the poll, 65 percent of Blacks feel police have gone too far in reacting to Michael Brown’s death and 20 percent feel the response was about right. Again, Whites had a different reaction, with 33 percent saying police had gone too far and a roughly equal proportion, 32 percent saying authorities had acted properly.

More than half of all African Americans – 54 percent – reported they were following events in Ferguson very closely. Less than half of Whites –25 percent – and Latinos – 18 percent – said they were closely following the events in Missouri.

There was a political divide as well, with 68 percent of Democrats feeling the Michael Brown case raises important issues while only 22 percent of Republicans contending it raises racial issues that need to be discussed. Also, 61 percent of Republicans say the issue of race has gotten too much attention in the case; only 21 percent of Democrats

The 1996 murder trial of O.J. Simpson exposed this raw divide. A CNN/USA Today Poll showed that 62 percent of African-Americans supported the jury’s decision to acquit the former football star. However, only 20 percent of Whites agreed with the jury. There was a similar split in polls taken during Hank Aaron’s campaign to break Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record and Barry Bond overtaking Aaron.

Even on a supposedly race-neutral issue such as federal aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina, racial views were split. According to a CNN/USA

Today poll, six in 10 African Americans said the federal government was slow to rescue residents of New Orleans because many of them were Black. However, only one in eight Whites concurred.

We should be preparing right now in every voting precinct in every congressional district and in every state where we live to have an unprec-

edented high voter turnout this November. We did it in 2008 we did it in 2012 and we can do it again in 2014.

Too often we live in communities where we have the potential margin of victory for local, congressional, statewide and national elections, but we simply do not go to the polls and vote, even though so many of our people died, bleed, went to jail, and “suffered” for us to get the right

to vote. Having a right to vote is not enough. We all must exercise the right to vote not once but in every election. It’s extremely important that we do so this year because people expect us to because Obama’s name will not be on the ballot and mid-term voting is traditionally lower than in presidential years.

Voting our political, economic and spiritual interest is not only “redemptive,” it is also the right thing to do. Very often police officers are not prosecuted for acts of racial violence against Black Americans because locally “elected” prosecutors and district at-

torneys get elected and stay in office because we do not vote at the rate that we should. Citizens in Ferguson, Mo., a community that is at least 2/3 African American, only vote at a rate of about 12 percent – about a third of their representation in the population.

That is a terrible reality that must now change. Understand, I am not saying that voting in record numbers will solve all the problems that we face in America.

But what I am saying clearly is that our failure to understand the power of the vote holds back our progress in the United States.

I was so proud to see thousands

of people marching nonviolently every day in Ferguson in protest to Michael Brown’s murder. The unified chant, “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot,” captured the energy and aspirations of millions more throughout the country and indeed around the world. Let’s keep that energy going strong. Let’s remain vigilant, vocal and visible.

As we move forward over the next 60 days, let’s also organize and mobilize to register to vote and to massively turnout the vote everywhere. Election Day should be Pay Back Day. Let’s also begin to chant “Hands Up, Vote!” Let’s make the difference. WI

This is very, very scary. They are using the environmental movement to control our nation. By doing this, they will control the world. It would be a shame if we let them do this. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a fine example of this group. He is a billionaire and he loves the environmental movement to a very big fault.

The National Black Chamber of Commerce has a passion for fighting these environmentalist zealots or should I say “buy outs.” Many are doing it for the big money and the limelight their activities provide. We lock horns with them and most of the time

we win. If you paint the real picture of their lies, misdeeds and propaganda, reasonable people will wake up and stop them. One of my proudest moments was the defeat of the cap and trade bill. That proposed legislation would have badly hurt America and would have devastated Black communities throughout the land. According to Senator Jim Inhofe [R-Okla.], “When the National Black Chamber of Commerce came to the Senate committee and testified about the terrible effects hidden in the Cap and Trade Bill, the oxygen left the room and the beginning of the end for the proposed legislation was begun.” Our office got about 10,000 emails from supporters after that.

The lesson I got from reading this report is that there is a vast conspiracy to control our lives and deny us freedom. WI

One cop – a lieutenant from a neighboring jurisdiction – has been relieved from duty after being caught on camera pointing his semi-automatic rifle at demonstrators and violently cursing and threatening them. Other White cops actually escorted a tiny contingent of provocative pro-shooter demonstrators through the thick of the seething, angry Black crowd.

Those police officers and others – wearing ordinary uniforms, not any special riot gear – inconveniently left their name tags off their uniforms. Was Captain Johnson really in charge? The officers ostensibly under his command made it appear that he was just a figurehead, chosen to placate angry Black folks while someone else made the important law enforcement decisions.

And in the dumbest move of all, Captain Johnson was photographed with one of his Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity brothers, flashing a secret

sign. Right-wing analysts accused him of flashing a criminal gang sign.

Black folks in the know had to take to the air to explain. Why? No one had to ever explain Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s membership in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, or the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s membership in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which like the Kappas are predominantly Black frats.

The reason, not because racist, right-wing haters of Black people will mock him (and by extension us), but rather because the governor put him in charge to represent ALL the people of Ferguson, not just the Kappas, not even just the Black folks, but his job was public safety for all the people. And that’s something Officer Wilson clearly ignored.

One man dead, and a parade of law enforcement officials who acted progressively dumb, and dumber, and even dumber. WI

Understandably, there was a furious, violent reaction from the Ferguson community, 70 percent of whom are Black, served by a police force that’s 95 percent White. The dumb police response was like a SWAT team on steroids: a military lockdown. Dumber.

The Gestapo response failed and the situation quickly boiled out of control. Mayhem was rampant.

There was looting, Molotov cocktails were thrown, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon then tried to calm the situation by appointing a Ferguson native, and Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson.

Johnson did some good things.

He told officers that the subjects of their patrols were their fellow citizens, not enemy combatants.
