In today’s society, particularly within the Black community, “mental illness” often invokes feelings of fear, intimidation and misunderstanding. Sometimes we feel powerless when someone we love begins to exhibit symptoms and behaviors related to various forms of mental disorders.We want to run from it, avoid it – even ignore it.

Add to that the stigma associated with mental illness and what usually happens is those who suffer from any form of mental illness often face disrespect, contempt and isolation.

When the actor and filmmaker Will Ferrell recently announced plans to play former president Ronald Reagan, portraying the Hollywood thespian turned politician when he had dementia, the outcry was intense. Ferrell said it was going to be a comedy project tackling the life of Reagan who suffered with Alzheimer’s in his later years. But few people could understand the comedic value to such a project.

Reagan’s daughter, Patti Davis, wrote a letter to Ferrell and posted it on her website. In summary, she shared the helplessness she and the rest of her family experienced in those last 10 years of Reagan’s life as he drifted past the memories that marked his life, “past all that was familiar and mercifully, finally past the fear.”

Her words are illustrative of what millions of families face, as the crushing truth comes crashing home – Alzheimer’s is not a joke and certainly nothing to joke about. It can be relentless and overwhelming leaving its victims swimming in waters that are ominously deep, unfamiliar and frightening.

But love has a way of warding off fear and that’s what those who have friends or family members who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other mental illnesses need the most.

As one who lives with this challenge because of my mother’s own mental decline, I know full well what it’s like to greet each day without knowing how much or how little the matriarch of our family will remember or understand.

Sometimes I have no other option but to cloister myself in my room where I can shed tears of anguish and frustration – realizing that there is very little I can do to remedy the situation.

The woman I once knew is no longer here. Yes, there are glimmers of her former self that come forward from time to time. But times are few when compared to the hours, even days, when she can’t remember where she is, what she’s done, when she last had a meal or who certain people are.

But she still remembers me and still has the wherewithal to express how much she loves me.

That’s all I can hope for – and for me, I have learned to accept it.

The child has become the parent – the parent has become the child.And we hold on to each other for dear life – with all the love we can muster.

Caregivers Seek Legislation for More Mental Health Support

Caregivers for those with a mental disability serve an important role in the recovery of a loved one, yet one in four have difficulty finding basic mental health services, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Southeast.

Comprehensive mental health care reform bills in both the Senate and the House recognize that misinterpretation of HIPAA privacy laws by health professionals has contributed to caregivers being unnecessarily shut out of the care conversation, officials said.

According to the health care website MedPage Today, Rosenberg cited Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data that detailed a 25 percent rise in suicide rates over the last 15 years and the spotlight on mental health on the presidential campaign as examples.

“There is attention to mental illness everywhere we look,” she said. “But attention is not enough.”

Rosenberg and other witnesses, including Brandon Marshall, a 32-year-old wide receiver for the NFL’s New York Jets, urged senators to make invest-

To that end, Rosenberg pressed for support of the Excellence in Mental Health Act, introduced by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan).

Marshall also addressed the committee about the need for reforming the mental health services.

Marshall co-founded Project 375, a nonprofit that focuses on integrating mental health prevention services into ev-

ery school in the country. He started Project 375 after being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in 2011.

Marshall acknowledged the limitations of the mental health workforce and said he’s begun advocating for better telehealth services.

“We need technology to be able to [fill in] the gap to help our professionals, our doctors and our government, to get the people the help they now need,” he said. HS

It also brings new challenges. As a result, it is normal to feel stressed once in a while.

And it’s common to feel sad or anxious at times. These are normal emotions. For most people, these feelings pass in a few hours. In serious cases, they may take a few days to pass. But for people living with a mental health condition (sometimes called behavioral health), everyday-life can be a struggle. Over time, this can take a toll on physical health, too.

A person struggling with his or her mental health may experience severe depression, anxiety or frequent changes in mood. These issues can affect

relationships, lower self-esteem and make it hard to function.

This is why it is so important for those with mental health issues to get the care they need.

May is Mental Health Month.

Now is the perfect time to reflect on your state of mind and find help if you need it.

OVERCOMING BARRIERS Mental health challenges affect millions of people of all ages. Yet, many people are too embarrassed to ask for help.

That’s because mental and physical illnesses are often viewed differently in today’s society.

Sadly, stigmas toward people who have a mental health issues exist today. A stigma uses negative labels to identify a person.

Stigmas cause people to feel ashamed. It can also hold them back from seeking the help they

need.

Stigmas are not the only barriers to care for those who need help. Language barriers and speech concerns can also make people hesitant to seek treatment. These barriers can make people more anxious because they can cause uncertainty. Some people may not know whether a doctor can communicate with them in their preferred language or how they will be viewed as a non-Englishspeaking person. The good news is there are plenty of resources available — regardless of one’s preferred language.

In addition to May being Mental Health Month, May is also Better Hearing and Speech Month. This is important because communication is key to getting help. We are celebrating by informing members about the resources available to bridge the communication gap.

“Educating people on the resources that are out there is important,” said Liliana Martin del Campo Lustig, a behavioral health care manager with AmeriHealth Caritas District of Co-

lumbia (DC). “For AmeriHealth Caritas DC members, all our provider locations have interpreters. Our Member Services department can also translate member materials into any language. Resources are also available for those with speech and hearing impairments.”

Regardless of how you communicate, resources you need are available. But the road to wellness begins with the decision to help yourself. This is true no matter how bad you feel.

WAYS YOU CAN HELP YOURSELF Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Symptoms of mental health issues can be different for each person, so it is important to know how you feel and act throughout the day. Try healthy ways to improve your mood and energy levels. It can be hard, but you can do it. Start slow and use these tips on your journey to wellness: • Talk with your doctors

about your feelings. This as a positive step to start feeling like yourself again. Your doctor can help you get the treatment you need. He or she may suggest joining a program or seeing a behavior health specialist.

Be sure to be open and honest with your doctors.This can help you get the right treatment so you start feeling better faster. n Find support through family and friends. Try not to spend too much time alone.

Spend time with friends or family who support you. It may help to share your thoughts with people you trust, such as a spouse, best friend or religious advisor. If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask. n Be active. Exercise can take your mind off the day-today worries and improve your mood. Over time, it can give you more energy throughout the day. Daily activity can also help you sleep better at night.

Try something new. AmeriHealth Caritas DC members can take free fitness classes at our Member Wellness Center.

Children should be active for at least 60 minutes each day. n Eat healthy. In addition to exercise, eating healthy foods can boost your energy. Be sure to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Also, be sure to drink lots of water instead of sugary drinks. n Don’t use non-prescribed medicines or alcohol. Mental health challenges and substance use are often linked together.

Unfortunately, some people use alcohol to cope with their conditions. Others may use overthe-counter or non-prescribed medicines.

Non-prescribed medicines are medicines not ordered by a doctor. Alcohol and medicines not prescribed to you can make symptoms worse. Only take medicines as

directed by your doctor. n Break down tasks. When it comes to your tasks, breaking them down into smaller parts can help to set priorities. Do a little bit each day, even though you might not feel like it. n Try to stay positive. Push negative thoughts out of your mind. Focus on the positive.

Avoid things you know can trigger your depression or anxiety.

And try to find fun things that you enjoy or that make you laugh.

Too Many DC Women Diagnosed with Late-stage Breast Cancer Submitted by MedStar Washington Hospital Center Screening tests can be a powerful weapon in the fight against breast cancer. Mammography is a breast cancer screening tool used to help doctors pinpoint when a change has occurred in a woman’s breast. In spite of these benefits, too many women in the Ward 5 neighborhood of Washington, D.C. are forgoing their annual breast cancer mammograms out of fear. It’s not just fear,

according to researchers at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, but also personal factors such as having a busy lifestyle and putting other relatives’ health before their own are other reasons why women in the District’s Ward 5 are diagnosed with latestage breast cancer, in spite of having health insurance.

“Early detection and early treatment of breast cancer increases the chance of survival,” said Elmer Huerta, MD, MPH, director of the Cancer Preventorium, at the Washington Cancer Institute at

“Previous data we’ve collected have shown that health disparities exist in AfricanAmerican women as it pertains to a diagnosis of breast cancer,” said Dr. Huerta. “But I believe empowering women with life-changing knowledge about prevention, will make a difference.”

of Columbia’s Ward 5, which has the highest breast cancer mortality rate in the city.”

A PARTNERSHIP TO SAVE LIVES Breast health navigators surveyed 1,091 women over the course of a year, to find out what they know about breast cancer and breast cancer services, as part of the Get2Breast CARE (Cancer Awareness & Resource Education in Ward 5) program, which has been funded grants from the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. Of the 1,336 personal opinions that were analyzed from the 31-question survey, 22.7 percent noted fear and 23.5 percent noted personal factors as reasons for delaying or skipping routine mammograms, the first line of defense to look for early signs of breast cancer. In their opinions, many respondents indicated fear of cancer, treatment, receiving bad news and abandonment, as well as personal reasons such as a busy lifestyle, no time to see a doctor, laziness and lack of preventative health education in their answers.

The successful outreach efforts have led the Avon Breast

Cancer Crusade to award Dr. Huerta and his team recently another $100,000 grant to provide more education, screening and patient navigation services to women not only in Ward 5, but also in Ward 7 and 8.

Breast health navigators will continue to educate women on the importance of early detection and continue outreach activities with events in the community. The breast health navigators will also offer follow-up care to women who are found to have suspicious findings after obtaining a screening mammogram.

Working to ensure that timely treatment is offered to women is vital.

“Previous data we’ve collected have shown that health disparities exist in African-American women as it pertains to a diagnosis of breast cancer,” said Dr. Huerta. “But I believe empowering women with life-changing knowledge about prevention, will make a difference.”

Celebrating Forty Years: George Franklin’s Transplant Anniversary Forty years ago, The Living Legacy Foundation (LLF) and other organ procurement organizations (OPOs) didn’t exist. Donate Life Maryland didn’t exist. Even the United Network for Organ Sharing(UNOS)didn’t exist. George Franklin, then 21 years old, had just received his second kidney transplant after his first, a few months earlier, had failed to take. “I never expected to see 30,” Franklin says.

This past November, Franklin celebrated his 61st birthday, and his 40th transplant anniversary.

Franklin is the longest-living kidney recipient in Maryland and the second longest-living in the country.

NOVEMBER 4TH, 1975 Diagnosed with Glomerulonephritis, acute inflammation of the kidney, in 1969, Franklin was very ill. He managed to graduate from high school despite frequent absences but struggled with his health, receiving dialysis treatments, undergoing nine surgeries in three years, and falling into a week-long coma after contracting viral pneumonia. The donation and transplantation landscape looked very different in comparisonto present day.

Tissue typing and immune suppressant drugs were fairly new, and the first successful kidney transplant had occurred just 21 years earlier between identical twins. Between 1954 and 1973, only 10,000 kidney transplants were performed, compared to over 17,000 in 2014 alone. “It was a very scary experience,” says Franklin of his transplants.

“My first kidney transplant failed. It was removed four weeks after transplant; it never worked.I went into a deep depression,” Franklin continued. “I was only 21 years old and nearly declined the second transplant that November, but my surgeon, Dr. Glenn W. Geel-

This is your kidney.’” Franklin’s second kidney transplant began to function immediately, and he was quickly able to enjoy life as a healthy 21-year-old, thanks to hisdonor.

GIVING BACK Even before his transplant, Franklin honored his donor’s legacy through his incredible work in the donation community.In March 1975 he volunteered alongside his transplant surgeon, the chairman of the Promotion and Organ Procurement Committee of the Washington Area Transplant Society.

Today, Franklin is an active volunteer for LLF, the Washington Regional Transplant Community in D.C., and the National Kidney Foundation. He is a member of the Patient Affairs Committee with UNOS, and on the Athletes Advisory Council and Minorities’ Advisory Council for the Transplant Games of America. Franklin is also President and Founder of the Quarter Century Club for long term transplant recipients.

“It’s been incredible,” Franklin says. “You become part of a community. Our lives and the lives of others hang on people understanding and accepting the concept of organ, eye and tissue donation and how it can both enhance and save lives.”

People don’t realize the importance of becoming an organ, eye and tissue donor. You are donating life. And I’m going to celebrate it.” HS

Suicide Poses Other Mental Health Challenges

By Stacy M. Brown WI Senior Writer The rate of suicide in America is increasing, according to officials at the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Southeast.

In the Senate, the Mental Health Reform Act of 2016 has passed committee, but still awaits a vote by the full Senate.

The proposed package of bipartisan mental health legislation calls for same-day mental health and medical treatment, and an expansion in the number of patients that addiction specialists can treat in a given year.

The Act includes increased funding for screening and treatment of first-episode psy-

chosis, clarification of HIPAA laws, integration of mental health and medical records and federal guidance on enforcing existing mental health parity laws. It would also end current restrictions on using same-day mental health and medical services at Medicaid-funded facilities, according to Clinical Psychiatry News.

The Senate action comes after NAMI released its third annual survey of state mental health care legislation which revealed that only 23 states were willing to increase mental health spending in 2015, compared to 36 states in 2013 and 29 in 2014. District officials increased funding for the city’s public mental health system in

2013 and 2014, but decreased it last year.

“The good news is that efforts to improve the lives of people affected by mental illness have continued in 2015,” NAMI Executive Director Mary Giliberti said in a news release.

“Some states have enacted specific reforms that can serve as models for others. And Congress has slowly begun to move forward now with mental health reform legislation,” she said.

“The bad news is that fewer states are strengthening investment in mental health care and Congress has only recently started to act after having been largely absent for two years. In-

Only 11 states have increased investment in mental health care every year in 20132015: Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia and Washington.

Three states cut mental health spending every year during the same period: Alaska, North Carolina and Wyoming.

Warning bells have sounded in four states where, after two years of increase, cuts occurred during the 2015 legislative sessions: Arizona, Iowa, Kansas and Ohio. D.C. is hearing them as well, NAMI officials said.

“Too much of the public dialogue about mental health over the past three years has been framed relative to violence,” Giliberti said.

“The Newtown (Connecticut school) tragedy and other events undeniably have helped to fuel public demand for mental health care reform. At the same time, studies clearly show that the vast majority of individuals living with mental illness are not violent,” she said.

“Tragedies are happening every day: people living with mental illness who end up in emergency rooms, jail or homeless and on the street.

They include young people whose symptoms aren’t recognized early enough to avoid

the worst outcomes. They include deaths by suicide.”

In a report published last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics revealed that the suicide rate in the U.S. has climbed to an all-time high.

From 1999 to 2014, suicide among middle-aged women climbed 63 percent. Men in that same category had a 43 percent jump, with ages 75 or older topping out with the highest rates, despite a decrease in 2014. Overall, the nation’s suicide rate stands at 13 per 100,000 individuals.

In the District, there were 52 reported suicides in 2014 or 7.9 per 100,000 residents, the most recent year with available statistics. One report indicates that suicide is the third leading cause of death in the District for the 15-24 age group. In response, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser last month signed the Youth Suicide Prevention and School Climate Survey Amendment Act of 2016.

“Under current D.C. law, it is mandatory for teachers and school administrators to identity students who have unmet behavioral health needs and refer them to appropriate services,” John Madigan, the vice president of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said in a news release.

“This is especially important in protecting our nation’s most important resource – our children.” HS

Providence Announces Cutting Edge 3D Mammography Services ProvidenceHealth Systemis taking a leading role regionally in women’s health as the first community hospital in Washington, D.C. -- and one of only a handful of hospitals in the region -- to offer three dimensional (3D)mammography, also called breast tomosynthesis.

This highly advanced diagnostic technique, introduced in Providence’s Mammography Center last month, allows doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time, rendering deeper and more accurate readings for breast health.

It is another milestone in the ongoing development of Providence’s women’s health services to better serve the needs of our community. Last summer, Providence appointed its first female radiologist, Dr. Jaclynn Powell, who specializes in breast imaging, and has offered monthly

“fast-track” mammography days for Providence associates, as well as their friends and family members in the community.

“Many patients are excited about 3D mammography, and we are as well, because this is more comfortable for them and results in a much better image for screening and diagnosis,” said Gina Peel, director of Medical Imaging at Providence.“We are proud to be the first community hospital to offer this in the District, because our patients deserve the very best at Providence.”

An analogy for understanding 3D mammography compared to traditional mammography is to imagine pages in a book.

In traditional mammography, the pages are condensed into a two-dimensional image as if you are looking at the book from the

top and closed - whereas 3D mammogram technology allows the radiologist to go through the image layer by layer, like looking through the pages of a book.

According to a national study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 3D mammograms may be better at picking up invasive tumors and avoiding false alarms than traditional breast cancer screening methods.Researchers in a study of 13 U.S. hospitals reported last year that 3D mammography, used along with standarddigital mammograms, improved breast cancer detection rates by more

than 40 percent.At the same time, the study found that there was a 15 percent dip in the number of women who had to return for more tests because of a suspicious mammogram finding. Similar findings were reported in a nationwide study published inThe American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR).

“These studies confirm what we see in our daily practice, which is that 3D mammography identifies more invasive, harmful breast cancers earlier – and saves patients from the stress and inconvenience of having to return for an abnormal mammogram when there is nothing wrong,” says Dr. Powell.

Dr. Powell joined Providence most recently from Ohio State University Medical Center, where she completed her fel-

lowship training in Breast Imaging at the Department of Radiology. She has a particular interest in breast interventions and follow-up using the latest in cutting edge technology – including 3D mammography and screening MRI for high risk patients.

In practice, a 3D mammogram will be very similar to a traditional mammogram. The technologist will position a patient just as in a traditional digital mammogram, compressingeach breast under a paddle to take images from different angles.There is no additional compression required with 3D mammography and it only takes a few seconds longer for each view.

Alzheimer’s: What are the Signs? Are there Solutions?

By D. Kevin McNeir WI Editor The Alzheimer’s Association recently released its disease facts and figures report highlighting the disproportionate impact of the disease on Blacks and Latinos.

And the news is not promising.

Blacks are about two times more likely and Latinos about one and a half times more likely to have Alzheimer’s and other dementia than whites.

Additionally, they are less likely than whites to have a diagnosis of their condition, resulting in less treatment and planning. What’s more, the death rate from Alzheimer’s has increased 46 percent in the past few years compared to decreasing rates from stroke, heart disease, breast and prostate cancer and HIV. Some 5.3 million Americans currently live with the disease.

But the Alzheimer’s Association, one of the nation’s leading voluntary health organizations in Alzheimer’s care, support and research, maintains that a world without the disease is possible.

Their mission remains to eliminate Alzheimer’s through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Through their peer-reviewed research grant program, they have invested over $350 million in more than 2,300 scientific investigations since 1982.

The Association has identified 10 warning signs that may help in distinguishing the difference between age-related changes and the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Those who experience any of these warning signs should consult a physician immediately as early diagnosis provides the opportunity for treatment and the development of a plan for the future.

Several Black champions have led the way with groundbreaking preventative research, making strides in care and support while raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease in the hopes of finding a cure.

These medical experts include: Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller, the first known Black psychiatrist in the U.S. and a native of Liberia who has pioneered revolutionary research on the physical changes in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s; Dr. Monica Parker, a family physician who received a National Institute of Health Minority Supplement award to study dementia in ethnic persons in the Emory University Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center; Dr. Goldie Byrd, a professor of biology at North Carolina A&T State University who has published extensively and presented her findings on the genetic epidemiology of Alzheimer’s disease in African Americans; and Dr. Warachal Faison, a geriatric psychiatrist who has studied the impact of Alzheimer’s on the Black community including minority recruitment for clinical trials.

Their research and the findings of others, suggests that several steps can be taken to maintain one’s overall health and reduce the risk factors for dementia.

Prevention or control of high blood pressure helps maintain a healthy brain and promotes overall health. Besides a fitness routine, one should eat healthy

foods, not smoke and work to maintain a healthy weight.

Finally, a healthy brain and heart depend on maintaining normal cholesterol levels and taking steps to reduce one’s risk for diabetes. One should engage in regular physical activity and eat

a diet low in saturated fat and high in fiber.

Take care of your heart and your brain and stay socially and mentally active as much as possible so that the brain and body can perform at their best.

Indoor Air Should Be Smoke-free to Prevent Strokes and Improve Heart Health By: Thometta Cozart, MS, MPH, CHES, CPH, Directors of Health Promotion and Education May is National Stroke Month, and strokes, among other factors, can be caused by secondhand smoke. According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), secondhand smoke increases the risk for stroke by 20-30%.

Just 30 minutes of exposure to secondhand smoke can cause heart damage similar to that of long-term smokers, according to the Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights.

“Secondhand smoke exposure is dangerous and potentially deadly,” stated Kelsey Bernstein, anAmerican Heart Association/ American Stroke Association lo-

cal policy manager. “The good news, however, is that it’s also 100% preventable.”

Exposure to secondhand smoke is a particularly prominent health risk in the African American community.African American children and adults are more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke than any other racial or ethnic group. Studies from 2011-2012 show that secondhand smoke exposure was found among 67.9% of African American children aged 3-11 years, 54.6% of African American adolescents aged 12-19 years, and 39.6% of African American adults aged 20 years and older.

National efforts to increase smoke-free environments, especially in public places such as

workplaces, is one of the purposes of the CDC National Implementation and Dissemination for Chronic Disease Prevention initiative, also referred to as Partnering4Health. This Initiative partners together national health organizations, such as the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) and the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE).

The AHA/ASA is leading community efforts around the country to decrease the public’s exposure to secondhand smoke, and

DHPE spreads the word about these efforts, along with other policy, systems and environmental change approaches to address chronic disease disparities, especially in minority communities.

In 2007, Maryland implemented the Clean Indoor Air Act, which prohibits smoking indoors in public places, including restaurants and bars.With all the excitement around the construction of the National Harbor’s MGM Casino, there has been increased concern about the establishment including an indoor smoking area.The MGM Casino’s cigar lounge would have been an exception to the current state laws, making it the only casino in Maryland with a designated indoor smoking area.

Many states across the nation have adopted smoke-free policies to help protect nonsmokers from the dangers of secondhand smoke, which is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States. It kills more than 42,000 Americans annually, and more than 8,000 of these deaths are from strokes.

The AHA/ASA is working to build smoke-free environments to build a groundswell of support to establishcomprehensive smoke-free environments that protect the public from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke where they live, work and play. To address this important issue, the AHA/ASA is working with local community partners within Central Texas and Incline Village, Nevadato build smokefree environments.

DHPE and anti-smoking professionals recommend taking the following measures to reduce secondhand smoke exposure: 1. Promoting and enforcing that workplaces, parks and public areas remain smoke-free.

2. Identifying and recruiting partners to form a local coalition consisting of multi-sector com-

munity leaders.

3.

Supporting family and friends who want to stop smoking.

4. Teaching children to stay away from secondhand smoke and encouraging teenagers to not smoke.

Informed and concerned citizens helped influence the decision to remove the indoor cigar bar from the MGM Casino at National Harbor in Maryland. In honor of National Stroke Month, remember that smoke-free environments affect more than only smokers.There are now 500 smoke-free casinos and gambling venues across the county.

Twenty states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands all require commercial gaming facilities to be 100% smoke-free indoors, including many of the U.S.’s hottest gaming expansion markets, such as Maryland, Ohio, Massachusetts, and New York. You, too, can help decrease the amount of nonsmokers impacted by secondhand smoke in our area by implementing smoke-free rules for your home, car, workplace, and encouraging others to do the same.

Lupus’ Disproportionate Impact on Women and Minorities Must Be Known

May is Lupus Awareness Month and on May 20th specifically, health advocates and those directly or indirectly impacted by the disease called lupus will Put On Purple to raise awareness and to support the millions of people who are affected by the disease. Many Americans are unaware that more than 1.5 million people, mostly women, are affected by lupus, and that lupus is the leading cause of kidney disease, stroke, and heart disease.

Sadly, many in the communities of color that are mostly affected are far less educated about the signs and symptoms of lupus.

Lupus has been called “a mystery disease” by researchers and physicians. It is a chronic, autoimmune disease with no cure that can damage any part of the body, including skin, joints and organs. It can even lead to death. It can take up to six years to diagnose if the medical provider is not familiar with its symptoms. There is no cure for lupus but there is hope!

With early detection, managed care, and following a healthy diet, individuals with lupus can strive for optimal health.

The Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE), along with four other organizations, was funded by the Office of Minority Health, US Department of Health and Human Services, to address lupus health disparities nationwide. This May, DHPE wants to be sure that lupus gets just as much attention as other chronic medical conditions that disproportionately affect women and minority populations. In the same way that we support awareness and the funding of research for other diseases, we need

many more community leaders and health professionals to rally around this effort to raise funds and support lupus awareness activities.There is also a need for increased participation of racial and ethnic populations in clinical trials so that we can better understand; more effectively diagnose; and treat lupus.

DHPE calls on women of color and health practitioners to join us on Put on Purple Day on Friday, May 20th, to raise awareness about lupus and in particular how women of color are disproportionately impacted by this disease.

Prince George’s Kicks Off Fitness Program

After warming up, Baker led a group to run while the county’s Health Officer Pamela Creekmur led others to walk from Oxon Hill Manor to a trail along the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

The purpose: kick-off a free health program called the “Step it Up Family Fitness Club” organized by the county’s Health Department and Maryland-National Park and Planning Commission’s

The fitness campaign, which will last until November, seeks to encourage families and friends to walk, or run, with county officials at various parks and start a health revolution with hopes in making this an annual program.

“Part of wellness is exercising and eating right,” Baker said before he ran a 5K, or about three miles. “It also helps relieve mental stress.

This gets everybody started in that direction.”

The county’s looking to combat obesity, which in the last 20 years increased from 19 percent to 35 percent: Some of the statistics include: n 67 percent of adults are classified as obese; n 17 percent of children ages 2 to 4 who participate in federally funded health and nutrition programs are classified as obese; and n 15 percent of those ages 12 to 19 are classified as obese.

Besides obesity, the county’s death rate for diabetes and heart disease from 2011 to 2013 ranked higher than the state average.

The county has a nearly three-year-old partnership with Doctors Community Hospital of Lanham for an “On the Road” diabetes program for residents to receive free information and screen-

ings. The next one takes place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. May 20 at the Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex in Fort Washington.

Ronnie Gathers, director of the county’s Park and Recreation, said the department wants to introduce 75 percent of its physical fitness programs throughout the county.

Some of the activities held throughout the county are: swimming at the Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, ice skating at Tucker Road Ice Rink in Fort Washington and free outdoor yoga sessions at various parks.

“There are studies that have been done across the nation on how physical activity improves health,” he said.

“That’s why we have various types of opportunities throughout Prince George’s County to keep our citizens active.”

Several residents such as Jimmy Jennings left after working in Annapolis and drove directly to Oxon Hill Manor to get his walk on.

“Anything that promotes a health initiative I’m all for it. I can’t run and jump, but I can walk,” said Jennings, 50, of Upper Marlboro. “We have sedentary jobs. We’re not moving around. We got to get it in and be more active.”

The “Step it Up” activity will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 14 for a 5K walk/run at the Bowie Town Center in Bowie with Sisters4Fitness, a nonprofit organization that provides activities to create a healthy lifestyle among Black women.

The schedule will then run from 6-7 p.m. every first and third Wednesday of the month starting in June.
