District Says Farewell to Prince Fans Face Long Lines at Historic Howard Theatre By D. Kevin McNeir WI Editor Fans of the artist forever known as Prince paid tribute to the iconic singer, songwriter and trend setter on Sunday, April 23 quickly filling the Historic Howard Theatre in Northwest to its capacity with lines so long that many were only able to say their farewells from the sidewalk. With hundreds of men, women and even children decked out in purple, and with some visibly shaken by the sudden death of the 57-year-old entertainer, the Prince Purple Day Party, streamed live by local radio stations WKYS-FM (93.9) and WMMJ-FM (Majic 102.3), served as a fitting tribute and farewell to one whose mu-

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, with the support of major Black legislatures in Maryland, defeated fellow Rep. Donna Edwards in the Democratic primary Tuesday, April 26. According to unofficial results, Van Hollen received nearly 378,400 votes at 53.6 percent, versus Edwards with almost 273,000 votes at 39 percent. Edwards, 57, of Oxon Hill, gave a stern message to her fellow Maryland Democrats during her concession speech at the IBEW Hall in Lanham.

Just over 100 registered voters showed up at the St. Elizabeths Hospital Auditorium in Southeast for an at-large city council forum that pitted incumbent Vincent Orange against challengers Robert White and David Garber – each eager to secure the endorsement of The Ward 8 Democrats. In the end and after the smoke cleared, Orange, with 128 ballots counted, received 88 votes, equivalent to 69 percent. White took second with 29 percent (37 votes)
while Garber picked up 2 percent (3 votes) in the Saturday, April 23rd event. Two at-large city council seats will be determined in June when voters officially go to the polls. But residents in Ward 8 say they realize that the at-large race has the potential to tip the balance of power on the council, and insist that their concerns are heard and addressed. All Ward 8 residents registered to vote as Democrats were eligible to weigh in at the endorsement forum. The candidate receiving
