The countdown until Christmas Day and other holiday celebrations, including Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, have already begun. It even looks like we may be in store for a bit of wintery snow here in the Greater Washington Area. Shoppers have swarmed their favorite stores or taken advantage of Internet bargains with reckless abandon. Meanwhile, homes, businesses and neighborhood porches have already been decked out with reds, greens, purples and whites.

But before you get too caught up in playing Saint Nick, don’t forget to pay attention to your own health. Be careful not to over indulge in those cakes, pies and meats; beware of consuming too much egg nog, rum punch and other seasonal beverages. And with the onset of the anBY D. Washington Informer The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] encourage Americans to get their shots as soon as possible, rather than skipping vaccinations as many did during last year’s flu season when only 46 percent of the population received the shots.

As CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden warned in a recent press conference, “the flu is serious, unpredictable and rarely gets enough respect.”

“If we could increase vaccination coverage in the U.S. by just 5 percent, it would prevent about 800,000 illnesses and nearly 10,000 hospitalizations,” he said.

But some Americans, especially Blacks, remain leery of such annual practices because of documented incidents from the past where Blacks, to their detriment, were unwillingly subjected to medical trials and experiments with the consent of either government or medical officials. That said, there are still several reasons why a vaccination may prove beneficial.

Older people, very young children, pregnant women and those with certain health conditions are more vulnerable to serious flu complications – another reason for more people to get vaccinated.

Beware of the ‘Holiday Blues’

High expectations, loneliness and stress can lead to the “Holiday Blues” during the season from Thanksgiving to New Year’s.

In most cases symptoms are temporary, but they can be serious if they last for more than two weeks, leading to clinical anxiety and/or depression.

A 2014 survey conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, in Arlington, Virginia, reported that approximately 24 percent of individuals with a diagnosed mental illness find that the holidays make their condition “a lot” worse and 40 percent said their condition became “somewhat” worse. The survey still holds true today.

“For many people, the holiday season is not always the most wonderful time of the year,” NAMI Medical Director Ken Duckworth said.

“What the survey shows is a tremendous need for people to reach out and watch out for each other in keeping with the spirit of the season,” he said.

Despite the fun and enjoyment, the holidays can bring for many, for others, it can be a time of stress, anxiety and depression, according to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center [WRNMMC] chaplains and other behavioral health experts who say the holidays can present a number of challenges, including family demands, spending, shopping, parties, cooking, entertaining, cleaning and more.

“First, society places a lot of pressure around the holidays,” said Army Chaplain (Capt.)

Heather Borshof, a student in the Clinical Pastoral Education program at WRNMMC. “It is embedded in us culturally that there is the expectation that everything needs to be perfect during the holidays. For most that is not the situation.

“Holidays can be expensive and not everyone has the means to buy what our culture says we cannot live without. Holidays can be a lot of work and pressure as other life responsibilities do not stop. Finally, the expectations are that the holidays are a time to be with family and friends.

Those who are without often feel sad and depressed because it reminds them that they are alone,” she said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has similar advice.

“The holidays don’t need to take a toll on your health. Keep a check on over-commitment and over-spending. Balance work, home and play. Get support from family and friends. Keep a relaxed and positive outlook,” Borshof said.

Another consideration often forgotten is many of the holidays are religious in nature, she said.

“Focusing on a higher power or higher cause may help to restore perspective. Whether it is going to a service, or engaging in community service, it can move the focus in a more positive direction,” Borshof said.

Regarding the little ones, she said, “Children learn from what they witness firsthand. If kids see their parents stressed out and depressed, they are going to feel that way as well. However, if parents and adults keep things in perspective, children will learn from that as well.”

Borshof cautions overindulging and drinking too much as a means for handling stress and depression.

HIV/AIDS: Play It Safe and Know Your Status

World AIDS Day was December 1. All around the world, people showed their support and came together in the fight against HIV/ AIDS. Learning about these conditions and how to treat and prevent them are especially important for individuals in the District of Columbia. This is because Washington, D.C., has some of the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States. It also has the highest lifetime risk in the United States of getting HIV. This is scary information. The good news is HIV rates are dropping. Together, with knowledge and prevention, we can help get this number even lower.

THE BASICS

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It is a serious condition that attacks the body’s immune system. The immune system is what helps the body fight infections and disease.

The immune system is made up of cells, tissues, and organs that all work together to keep the body healthy. Important cells in the immune system are called T cells. HIV attacks the T cells, which makes it hard for the body to fight against diseases and infections.

AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is the final stage of HIV. When a person has AIDS, his or her immune system is severely damaged. This makes it easier to get sick and for the sicknesses to become much more severe. Life expectancy for people with AIDS is 3 years or less. If a person with AIDS gets sick, life expectancy drops to 1 year if he or she doesn’t seek immediate treatment.

Not everyone with HIV has AIDS. In fact, many people who get treatment for HIV can live long, fulfilling lives. That is why is it so important to get tested and keep up with treatment if you are HIV positive.

RISKS

HIV is not an airborne virus like the flu. You can’t get HIV from just being around an HIV-positive person. You can only get HIV from having contact with certain bodily fluids that come from someone with the virus. The most common ways people get HIV are from having sexual contact with an HIV-positive partner or sharing needles.

You may be able to get HIV if you are exposed to these fluids from

someone with HIV: • Blood • Semen and pre-seminal fluids • Rectal and vaginal fluids • Breast milk

Statistics show you may be at a higher risk for HIV if you are: • A gay or bisexual man (of all races) • African American • Hispanic or Latino

STAYING SAFE

Aside from not sharing needles, the only sure way to protect yourself from HIV is through sexual abstinence. This means not engaging in sexual activities of any sort. But if you choose to be sexually active, the next best thing is to practice safe sex.

You can do this by using condoms with every sexual partner.

It is important to know that different sexual activities carry different levels of risk. For example, oral sex, touching, and kissing have little to no risk of contracting or spreading HIV. But other STDs can be spread through these acts. For instance, gonorrhea and chlamydia can be transmitted through oral sex.

Herpes can spread just by kissing.

High-risk sexual acts consist of anal sex and vaginal sex. Anal sex causes the highest amount of risk for HIV, with vaginal sex closely following.

Using condoms correctly can greatly reduce the risk of HIV for those engaging in sexual activity.

There are also medicines that can help prevent HIV. People who are at a high risk for the virus, such as sexually active gay men with multiple partners, should talk to their doctors about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP is a daily pill people can take to help lower their risk of getting HIV. People taking PrEP should still use condoms to increase protection.

For emergencies, there is post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). PEP is an emergency medicine taken for 28 days to help people recently exposed to HIV. If PEP treatment is started within 72 hours of exposure to HIV, it can help reduce the risk of infection. PEP is not 100 percent effective, but every hour counts.

The sooner you can begin PEP after exposure, the greater your chances of staying HIV negative. If you think you may have been exposed to HIV — for instance, if the condom breaks — talk to your doctor right away.

SYMPTOMS

Unlike some conditions, HIV/ AIDS cannot be diagnosed by

symptoms alone. The only way to determine if you are HIV positive is to get tested.

After contracting HIV, some people may experience flu-like symptoms. Others may not have symptoms at this early stage. The flu-like symptoms of HIV can include: • Fever • An itchy rash • Chills and night sweats • Muscle aches • Feeling extra tired • Sore throat • Swollen lymph nodes (glands) • Mouth ulcers (sores) It can take up to 10 years for some people with HIV to develop symptoms. Even if someone doesn’t show symptoms, the virus is still highly contagious. This is why it is so important to get tested regularly and always practice safe sex.

For those who have AIDS, symptoms can become much more severe. Remember, AIDS occurs when HIV has progressed to its final stage. At this point, the body’s immune system will be extremely weak. This makes it very hard to fight infections and cancers. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you have any of these symptoms, because it could be a sign of AIDS or another serious condition: • Rapid weight loss • Having a frequent fever • Heavy sweats at night • Feeling extremely tired often • Prolonged swelling of lymph nodes (in neck, armpit, or groin area) • Diarrhea that lasts a week or more • Sores of the mouth, genitals, or anus • Red, pink, purple, or brown blotches on or under the skin

Blotches inside the mouth, nose, or eyelids Pneumonia (lung infection) Memory loss or other behavioral health changes

TREATMENT

There is no cure for HIV/AIDS, but there are many different medicines designed to help people with these conditions stay healthy and live longer. The combination of medicines that help fight HIV is called antiretroviral therapy (ART).

ART is recommended for everyone with HIV. Using ART may reduce the amount of HIV in your body.

This can help you fight infections so you can live longer. If taken as directed, ART can help delay or even prevent the onset of AIDS.

KNOW YOUR STATUS

Sharing your HIV/AIDS status with friends and family is a personal choice. It can be scary. But remember, you don’t have to tell them if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

But it is important to get support.

If you want to talk, choose someone you trust. A therapist or HIV support group may help.

Although you don’t have to tell your family and friends, you should always share your HIV/AIDS and STD statuses with your sexual partners. This is vital to help stop HIV

and other STDs from spreading to other people. Open communication is key. Even if both of you believe you are STD free, it is always smart to use a condom during sex.

If you do not know your HIV status, get tested right away. Testing is easy, and most tests are free. To find testing sites in your area, visit gettested.cdc.gov.

District’s Uninsured Rate Drops by Half A new survey by the Center for the Study of Services conducted for the DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority (DCHBX) concludes that the District of Columbia made huge gains during the most recent open enrollment period to provide access to health insurance coverage to people who were previously uninsured. Results from this survey show that more than 25,500 people, who were not previously covered in 2015, gained access to health insurance coverage in 2016 through DC Health Link, the District’s online health insurance marketplace.

“Reducing the number of District residents who are uninsured by half in just three years is a tremendous achievement through strong efforts by DCHBX, DHCF, DHS, DISB, DOH and other sister agencies, as well as our community partners,” said Mila Kofman, Executive Director of the DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority.

• 53% of the people who were determined eligible for Medicaid were uninsured before applying.

• 40% of the small businesses enrolled in DC Health Link did not offer health insurance to their employees prior to enrollment through DC Health Link.

This new survey by DCHBX confirms the results of three recent national studies showing that DC Health Link is having a major impact on reducing the rate of the uninsured in the District of Columbia. These national studies were performed by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Kaiser Family Foundation. The studies conclude that the number of uninsured people in the District has been cut in half since 2013, the year DC Health Link opened for business. These studies also show that the rate of the uninsured in the District is between 3.7% - 4%, which places DC’s uninsured rate as the first, second, or third lowest in the country, depending on the study.

Colorectal Cancer: A Disease Claiming Thousands of AfricanAmerican Lives, Despite Advances in Treatment and Prevention

By Dr. Patricia Maryland Few diseases cause as much pain and suffering as cancer. While survivors, activists, policymakers and healthcare professionals have been successful in raising awareness for some types of cancer, others are not as high profile. Among them: colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men and women combined in the U.S. Even less widely known is the fact that African-Americans have the highest incidence and mortality rates for colorectal cancer.

The disparities are impossible to ignore. African-Americans are about 25 percent more likely than whites to be diagnosed with this

form of cancer, and about 50 percent more likely to die from it. This is particularly troubling when considering that in many cases, colorectal cancer can be prevented and is highly treatable if it’s detected early, according to the American Cancer Society.

While we’re still working to understand why African-Americans are more susceptible to this type of cancer, one of the causes of the disparity in mortality is that minorities lag behind in screening for colorectal cancer. Researchers at the University of Texas have shown that African-Americans are less likely than white patients to receive a colonoscopy — the most common form of colorectal cancer screening — even when controlling for health insurance coverage and access to quality healthcare providers.

Both patients and providers bear some responsibility for the lower rates of colorectal cancer screening among African-Americans. On the patient side, African-Americans may not know that they are at a heightened risk of experiencing colorectal cancer earlier than other groups. In the African-American community, the share of colorectal

cancer cases that occur before the generally recommended screening age of 50 is almost twice as high as among whites. That’s why experts advise African-Americans to begin screening at age 45, five years earlier than other demographics.

But encouraging early and proactive screening is complicated. The invasiveness of the procedure, coupled with fears of pain, often causes African-American patients to rule it out as a preventive measure. What’s more, a lack of access to a physician they trust leads many members of the African-American community to delay this important procedure until it’s too late.

In addition, healthcare providers sometimes contribute to the low colorectal cancer screening rates among African-Americans. A recommendation from a physician has been shown to increase the likelihood that a patient will get a colonoscopy, but according to the American College of Gastroenterology, African-Americans are roughly one-third less likely than whites to get such a recommendation.

These racial and ethnic disparities illustrate the need for a patient-centered, culturally competent ap-

proach to healthcare. As with many diseases, a broad range of factors determine a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Genetics, family history, personal medical history, diet, weight and physical activity all can have an impact.

That’s why healthcare providers must treat each patient in a way that takes into account all of the influences on their health. This includes their race and ethnicity, which in the case of colorectal cancer is a critical factor in determining whether a physician should recommend a colonoscopy, when a patient’s screening should start and concerns a doctor should address about the procedure.

Training healthcare professionals to understand the unique colorectal cancer risks of African-Americans, as well as the unease with which many view colonoscopies, is an important step toward increasing screening rates and catching more cases in their early stages. There’s also a need for a broader conversa-

tion about increased risk and the need for prompt, diligent colorectal cancer screening in the African-American community.

This disease is expected to claim the lives of over 7,000 African-Americans this year alone.

It’s time to make sure the impact of colorectal cancer is just as widely known as that of other forms of cancer. And it’s time to replace misperceptions and fear by embracing a culture of health that puts awareness and prevention first.

Fortunately, incidence and mortality rates for colorectal cancer have been on the decline among both African-Americans and other racial groups across the board, but substantial gaps in health outcomes remain. Healthcare providers and the African-American community must work together to ensure that all patients have and take advantage of the opportunity to access a colonoscopy or other screening procedure that could save their life. I was born November 26, 1990 with Alport Syndrome, a hereditary kidney disease that I received from my mom. I am one of six kids, four of which have kidney disease. Living as a kidney transplant recipient is something that you have to take one day at a time.

My siblings and I have been hit with everything you can imagine: kidney disease, Down syndrome, heart problems, cancer, detached retinas. When it comes to the body, we’re pretty much experts. I drew the short straw and in the fall of 2004 my kidneys started to fail. I experienced everything from faulty blood tests to significant weight loss. By early 2005, life seemed like a burden. I didn’t know if I was going to wake up the next day and I didn’t necessarily look forward to waking up.

It was when I was on my death bed with roughly two weeks to live that I realized, ‘Wow, this is really happening.’ It was an eye opening experience and at

that point, there was nothing I could do. It was one of the few times in my life where I felt completely helpless. A few weeks later, I had received a call that a match had been found for me—a member of my church was a PERFECT MATCH. I received a kidney transplant on March 21st, 2005.

The feeling of someone going out of their way to save your life is pretty hard to describe. It’s very humbling, but at the same time from my donor’s viewpoint, it’s something that you would hope someone would step forward and do for you if you needed something of that significance.

Maryland is a hot-bed for lacrosse, breeding lacrosse players. It’s the lifestyle that I was born into and growing up it’s all I knew and all I ever did. If I hadn’t had a transplant, then I would’ve gone and played lacrosse at the NCAA D1 level. If that had happened, then I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. My kidney transplant changed my perspective of life and it forced me to grow up really fast. At the time of my transplant, all of my other siblings were playing lacrosse

at very competitive levels. Lacrosse was my outlet. Happy, sad, angry… whatever emotion I was feeling, I used lacrosse to unwind and to vent. After I had my transplant, I couldn’t do that. It hurt to watch my siblings play and know that I could never do that again. Then one day, my doctor brought up how there was a chance for me to play lacrosse again. At that point, I was roughly 230 pounds and just a huge, out-ofshape teenager. The opportunity to play lacrosse again was a second chance for me. Lacrosse was all I ever knew, so having the opportunity to play again was like receiving a breath of fresh air.

I ended up attending Liberty University in the fall of 2009 and by the spring of 2010, I had successfully worked with the university in establishing a lacrosse program. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the program and play during my four years at Liberty. During my senior year, our team not only won a conference championship, but we made it to the final four of the national tournament—we ended up losing in OT. I graduated from Liberty with a degree in Communication Studies.

Having a kidney transplant taught me responsibility, respect, maturity, humility and many other traits. It taught me not to take anything for granted and to appreciate the little things in life, because most often the little things are the most important.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center Targets Breast Health – One Ward at a Time Breast cancer screening is a powerful weapon in the fight against breast cancer. One such method, a mammogram, is an X-ray picture of the breast.

Doctors use a mammogram to look for early signs of breast cancer, and regular mammograms are the best tests doctors have to find breast cancer early, sometimes up to three years before it can be felt.

In spite of these benefits, and in spite of having health insurance, too many women in Washington, D.C. are forgoing their annual mammograms out of fear. For the last two years, breast health navigators at MedStar Washington Hospital Center have been working passionately to reverse the trend. After first focusing on women in the District’s Ward 5 neighborhood, the hospital’s Get2Breast CARE program is expanding across the city into Wards 7 and 8, thanks to a generous $100,000 grant from the AVON Breast Cancer Crusade.

“Early detection and early treatment of breast cancer increases the chance of survival,” said Elmer Huerta, MD, MPH, director of the Cancer Preventorium at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. “It is shocking to see that 97 percent of women with advanced breast cancer treated at the Hospital Center have health insurance.

This validates the need to offer breast health education in the community.”

RESEARCH LED TO A SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIP

During Phase I of the program, as part of the Get2Breast CARE (Cancer Awareness & Resource Education in Ward 5) program, which was funded by the Avon Foundation for Women, breast health navigators surveyed 1,091 women over the course of a year. They were seeking information about what women know about both breast cancer and breast cancer services, and they wanted to better understand why women were postponing their mammograms, even though they had insurance that would cover the cost.

During Phase II of the study, also funded by the Avon Foundation, women said that having more access to mammography facilities and more educational programs were important ways to increase the number of women getting checked.

Those successful outreach efforts have led the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade to award another grant to MedStar Washington Hospital Center to provide more education, screening and patient navigation services to women not only in Ward 5, but also in Wards 7 and 8.

The team will host educational events, mammography services and follow-up care, if needed.

“Empowering women with life-changing knowledge about prevention, and teaching them how to use their health insurance coverage will make a difference,” added Dr. Huerta. HS

The D.C. native describes himself as a man of many hats – a banquet cook, an ad-jingle-making musician, and a martial arts enthusiast. His passions have taken him all over the East Coast, meeting many people along the way.

“But what people really remember me for is my smile,” he says.

He credits the friendly dentists at Community of Hope for his smile. Mr. Boone has been a dental patient since Community of Hope opened the doors of the Conway Health and Resource Center in 2014. He is happy that accessible, quality and affordable dental care is in his Bellevue neighborhood.

Mr. Boone has come to Community of Hope for all his oral health needs like annual cleanings, fillings and root canal and wisdom teeth referrals. He looks forward to his visits with our dental team.

Dr. Halima Karim, Community of Hope’s Dental Director, says her team loves to improve smiles.

“The best part of our job is helping patients feel more comfortable about their smile,” she said.

Dr. Karim said she likes to talk with patients and understand what the patient’s goals are and share treatment options. But, she adds, there’s something more important than a beautiful smile – good oral health.

“I try to remind patients that the mouth is what you use every day, anything you put in the mouth affects your body,” she said. “Our mouths and bodies are connected. People with gum disease may have risk factors for heart disease or diabetes.”

Dr. Karim says that she stresses that routine dental check-ups can prevent a lot of oral health problems.

Many people don’t get routine check-ups because they fear of dental visits. Dr. Karim makes patients feel comfortable while in the dentist chair by talking them through what she is doing. It helps both kids and adults.

Boone says he feels at ease with the Community of Hope dental staff.

“It’s like catching up with long-

time friends – I share my life events with staff, inviting them to my upcoming food shows or band gigs. It’s special to have a place where I can do that,” he said.

Paying attention to his oral health has made Mr. Boone more conscious about his overall health too. He’s now watching the ingredients he puts in his food, especially working in the food industry.

“Community of Hope has shown me what small changes can do – starting with flossing more,” he said.

Last year, Community of Hope provided compassionate healthcare to 9,825 patients. They have enrollment assisters available to sign up people who need insurance and offer a sliding fee scale to patients. HS

So how do you stick to your goals when there’s food everywhere and everyone around you seems to be indulging? Meet the holiday food bonanza armed with a plan. Before going out, have a healthy meal or snack to curb your appetite. If you have diabetes, be sure to eat close to your usual times to keep your blood sugar steady. Whatever you do, don’t skip meals to save up for the impending feast. It will be harder to keep your blood sugar in control, and you’ll be really hungry and more likely to overeat.

But what about those irresistible spreads at the holiday office party or at grandma’s house?

Don’t let that buffet disrupt your blood sugar and blood pressure control or destroy your health and fitness goals. Outsmart it. When you’re faced with a buffet of deliciousness, have a small plate of the foods you like best and then move away from the buffet table.

Move away. Then eat slowly. It takes your brain at least 20 minutes to realize you’re full. Also, try to avoid or limit alcohol, as it can lower blood sugar and interact with diabetes medicines. Be sure to watch the eggnog, too— whether it’s spiked or not—as it’s loaded with fat. Moderation for all food and drink is key.

things to enjoy or have in moderation this holiday season? Don’t fret. There’s a lot of things you can and should do in abundance, such as staying physically active and getting rest. Get moving with friends and family, such as taking a walk after a meal, to help burn off excess calories and reduce stress. Family gatherings, airports, shopping malls and schools are all places germs like to mingle. Protect yourself by getting a flu shot (if you haven’t already) and wash your hands a lot, with soap and warm water. If traveling by air, train or bus, wipe down the armrests, tray tables, seatbelt buckles—anything you might touch— before settling into your seat so that you don’t pick up germs that others may have left behind.

Following these tips will keep you and your family healthy and happy throughout the holidays.

Healthy Holiday Tips from an Ex-Navy Seal

By Stacy M. Brown WI Senior Writer Each year, millions start off the holidays with a large meal on Thanksgiving, followed by several more days of leftover pies, cakes and candies.

Many gain a significant amount of weight – some as much as five to seven pounds during the holiday season, though according to a University of Texas SW Medical Center, most people only gain one or two pounds during the season.

But Stew Smith, a former Navy Seal and fitness author certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, says no matter who you are, the weight-gain cycle can easily continue throughout the winter months.

By spring time, Smith said individuals may have five to 10 pounds to lose.

“Hold that pace for a decade and you will have gained 50 to 60 pounds. This is the way weight gain occurs – slowly, over the years,” he said in a post on Military.com.

The good news: While it can take a few to several years to gain 50 to 60 pounds, it can only take six to 12 months to lose it.

“When I feel the urge to write the annual ‘Holiday Weight Gain Article,’ next year, perhaps I can feature the success stories of last year instead of trying to scare people into exercising and eating from healthy food plans,” the former Navy Seal said.

“Without a lifestyle change, including daily exercise and proper food habits, the annual one to two pounds of weight gain can lead to obesity, which gives you a higher chance of contracting other related health problems such as hypertension, stroke and diabetes,” he said.

So how can people avoid adding holiday weight? Healthy food choices and more exercise, Smith said. Tips include walking more and, when safety is not an issue, individuals should try to walk further than normal when going about their regular routine.

“Burning a few more calories by walking is one of the easiest ways to take off that extra weight.

Just 20 minutes of brisk walking can burn over 100 to 150 calories. That equals a cookie or soda in calories,” he said.

Additionally, it’s important to continue to drink water which will help holiday revelers from eating too much, particularly if they drink a large glass 20 to 30 minutes prior to having dinner, he says.

“Some people confuse hunger with dehydration. If you just drink a glass of water, that will often take care of the food yearning. This is not skipping a meal – it’s just a way to work through temptation,” Smith said.

Additionally, it’s important to eat slowly and enjoy the flavors.

Smith recommends chewing food for at least 30 to 40 times per mouthful which will allow the “hungry-full” response from the brain to signal satisfaction.

“It takes the brain about 20 minutes to let you know you are full,” he said. “Stay away from buffet tables at parties and use smaller plates when selecting food.”

Other tips: Smith includes

brushing teeth immediately after eating and doing cardio workouts like walking, jogging, biking, swimming and rowing.

“The best thing about this part of your workout is that you can do your cardio exercise around your neighborhood, on a treadmill at home, or at the gym if you choose,” Smith said. “So, on days when time is critical, get your cardio done or make those days one of your rest days – once or twice per week.”

In addition to other workouts found on Smith’s website, he said individuals who follow some of his suggestions four or five days a week will burn enough calories to lose weight and inches if they’re not getting too carried away with eating habits.

“Good luck with the Holidays. Try to work off many of the stressors of the Holidays by giving yourself a present of 30 minutes to exercise or walk. You will feel better after any type of exercise compared to not having done any activity,” he said. HS

Tips to Keep Your Family Healthy and Happy This Winter (StatePoint) With colder weather comes an increase in weather-related illness and health issues. From activity levels to mood, diet and more, seasonal weather affects all areas of your life. But, don’t let the winter blues get you down -- follow these tips to help keep your family healthy and happy during the cold-weather months.

“WINTERIZE” YOUR DIET

Some fresh fruits and veggies can be hard to find in winter. The Cleveland Clinic suggests turning to root vegetables like beets, carrots and turnips since they can withstand cold temperatures, making them easier to find. Also on their list of suggested foods are oatmeal, soup (without a lot of salt), sushi, broccoli and cauliflower -- all of which provide essential nutrients to support immunity and boost vitamin levels.

Also, be sure to work vitamin D into your system. It aids bone health and muscle strength, but during shorter, cloudy days of winter, you might not get the necessary amount you need. Harvard School of Public Health recommends daily 15-minute walks outside to get some sun, and eating vitamin D-rich foods such as dairy products, breakfast cereals and fish like salmon and tuna. You may also consider a supplement.

KEEP MOVING

Studies show that daily exercise and activity offer immune-boosting benefits. People who exercise 30 to 45 minutes a day experience a 40 to 50 percent reduction in the number of days they get sick, according to studies at Appalachian State University’s Human Performance Lab. Encourage the family to get active with step or fitness trackers. Daily or weekly step goals and challenges with siblings or spouses are fun ways to keep everyone moving. FitBit, Garmin and Jawbone all make trackers with corresponding mobile apps to help monitor goals.

And, when cabin fever sets in, grab the kids and head outside. Cold weather activities nearby or on a trip away, such as sledding, skiing and snowboarding, can offer additional exercise outside the normal indoor routine.

ALWAYS BE PREPARED

When the weather gets cold, the risk of certain illnesses like cold and flu rise. What’s in your feel-better-fast kit when your family gets sick?

Items that doctors recommend to have when a cold or the flu hits include: pain and fever relief (ibuprofen, acetaminophen), tissues, fluids (especially cool water), soup and tea, throat lozenges and a digital temperature monitor.

Maryland Health Connection Illness and accidents can be like a holiday guest – sometimes they just show up uninvited. And you need to be prepared. SUCCESS STRATEGY #1: EAT WITHIN THE FIRST HOUR OF AWAKENING

When you are at rest, your body wants to conserve energy, so your metabolism slows down. Just as you shut off the lights when you sleep, your body turns down many of the processes involved in metabolism. When you wake up, you want to turn everything up and start burning calories and fat as soon as possible. That’s why I recommend eating breakfast within one hour of waking up.

By eating a nutritious, energy-revving breakfast, you are jump-starting your metabolism. When you feed your body healthy food, you prime your “engine” getting it ready to go for the day, so you can do everything that you have to do as well as those things you want to do, while feeling energetic.

Despite what you may have heard, skipping breakfast sets you up to feel tired, lethargic, and irritable. Even if you don’t feel like having breakfast, push yourself to have something—an apple, an orange, some yogurt, maybe a glass of vegetable juice.

Something is better than nothing.

SUCCESS STRATEGY #2: EAT EARLY AND OFTEN

Many people either skip breakfast or have a small bite in the morning. They go light on lunch. Then their hunger roars like a starved lion in the middle of the afternoon, at which point they start eating sweet/salty junk food. Then at dinner, thinking they didn’t really eat much during the day, they help themselves to giant portions of their evening meal, followed by dessert and bowls of ice cream and chips while sitting and watching TV for a few hours before bed. This is a surefire way to blow your plan.

Instead, eating early and often means having a healthy, lean, green breakfast; a morning snack to keep your metabolism humming; a healthy lunch; an afternoon snack; and a dinner that’s smaller than you’re probably used to, with a small snack in the evening.

Ideally you should eat the bulk of your calories at breakfast and lunch.

SUCCESS STRATEGY #3: GET 7 TO 8 HOURS OF SLEEP PER NIGHT

We Americans are an exhausted bunch of people. Although sleep researchers recommend 7 to 8 hours per night, studies show that 30 percent of us get fewer than 6 hours of sleep a night. Being chronically tired truly interferes with your health. Lack of sleep is associated with higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, depression, obesity, and cancer. In fact, studies show that getting fewer than 5 hours of sleep per night is associated with a higher body-mass index. The more sleep-deprived you are, the higher your risk of obesity.

Insomnia causes hormonal changes and cravings for carbohydrates. And when you deprive yourself of adequate sleep, fatigue lowers your ability to resist trigger foods. Instead of eating, try taking a power nap for a bigger, more effective payoff.

SUCCESS STRATEGY #4: EAT SNACKS THAT ARE NO LARGER THAN YOUR CLOSED FIST

Incorporating snacks into your daily meal plan is a helpful way to prevent hunger. But in order to stay on track, you have to make sure your snacks are a reasonable size. One of the easiest ways to do this is to eat snacks that are no larger than your closed fist.

The exception to this is free foods (leafy green vegetables, which contribute few calories) and calorie-free beverages, such as coffee and tea. For example, a closed fist holds about half an ounce (1 tablespoon) of nuts. But remember, I’m talking about a closed fist, not an open palm.

SUCCESS STRATEGY #5: DRINK HALF YOUR BODY WEIGHT IN WATER

Drinking water helps fill your stomach and boosts your body’s metabolism, so fool yourself into drinking more water. It also keeps you hydrated, which is important because often we mistake thirst for hunger, leading us to eat high-calorie snacks when all our bodies really want is a glass of water.

To figure out how much water to drink, divide your weight in half. If you’re 160 pounds, aim for about 80 ounces (10 8-ounce glasses) per day.

Liquids such as unsweetened coffee, tea, and seltzer can also count in your daily tally.

Make the water ice cold, because drinking cold water revs up the metabolism even more.
