A Cozy Christmas

Events DC's Cozy Christmas brought joy and smiles to the faces of many Washington youngsters at the Gateway DC campus on Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave in Southeast Washington. In addition to an appointment with Santa and receiving gifts, children and their parents enjoyed a tasty buffet. Kids did face painting, arts & crafts, watched Christmas movies and delighted to the magician's tricks of the Reggie Rice Show. The United States Marine Corps distributed new bicycles to the excitement of all. Greg O'Dell (President and CEO of Events DC) thanked the many volunteers and community activists who participated and helped make the event one that the kids will remember for years to come. You’re already giving yourself an excuse to do something until the end of the year. Some people are able to do that, but I can’t.

Like everyone else, I’m human, and they just usually end up going out of the window after a little while and I hate myself for the rest of the year because of it. I have a project that I intend to get going this year. I may not see it through in 2016, but I’m going to work hard to try to complete it. I intend to follow through on it and stick to it like glue. That’s my resolution for 2016.

My New Year’s resolution is to help more people, to get out of debt and to live a better life. I intend to strive for the best all year. 2015 was a good year – I’m still here. It had some challenges but it was good. I plan to make 2016 my year, because there are so many things that I am focused on achieving.

2003 – Mamie Till Mobley, mother of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Chicago youth who was murdered by racists for whistling at a White woman while visiting Mississippi in 1955, dies at age 81. Her insistence that her son’s casket remain open so that the world could see the brutal injuries he had suffered helped spur the Civil Rights Movement.

January Obama’s Cuba Announcement Rattles Nation’s Status Quo The U.S. isolation of Cuba came to an end in 2015. President Barack Obama ended the 54-year political standoff between the two countries on July 1. Cuban-American citizens who haven’t seen their family members in decades will now be able to travel freely to Cuba. President Obama authorized a number of important licenses to travelers looking to explore Cuba. He also lifted sanctions and embargoes and even sent a letter to the Cuban President Raul Castro. LaRuby May Wins in Hard-Fought Ward 8 Race The run for Marion Barry’s Ward 8 seat was a hardfought battle. At the beginning of the 2015 there were approximately 20 candidates looking to win the coveted Ward 8 seat. Some of the issues faced by Ward 8 were education, gentrification and unemployment. The people of Ward 8 needed a candidate who was able to fill Barry’s shoes and hit the ground running. They found that in LaRuby May. The former campaign staffer to D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser won with 1,955 voters. Since her swearing-in, May has committed herself to the prosperity and growth of Ward 8 and its residents. WI

FEBRUARY DC Exelon-Pepco Merger The Pepco-Exelon saga continues to play out in the District’s seats of power. In October, Mayor Bowser and a number of other former opponents of the merger stood together in support of the new energy company. The change of heart from Mayor Bower came after Exelon re-negotiated the merger. The new agreement Exelon increased their commitment to D.C. from $14 million to $78 million. The agreement would include energy credits, job training programs and a one-time payment of $50 to residents. The D.C. Public Service Commission is the last organization taking a stand against the merger. They rejected the deal citing it not in the public interest, which is the concern of many residents and renewable energy supporters. The saga will continue into the new year as the final decision continues to be debated. WI

FEBRUARY Gov. Larry Hogan Education Shortfall In May of this year Maryland Governor Larry Hogan decided to shortchange schools while increasing the states pension fund. The $68 million which should have been allocated to schools went to fund the state’s pension fund instead.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Hogan said choosing schools over the pension fund would be “absolutely irresponsible, and it will not happen on my watch.” Community activists in the Baltimore called upon Hogan to release the funds in support of education.

Hogan responded by accusing the Baltimore city government of mismanaging funds and citing fiscal austerity in his decision.

Baltimore’s failing school system and continued layoffs will stretch teaching staff farther than ever before. The English faculty at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in East Baltimore will only have three certified English teachers and one long-term substitute teacher to teach English to 900 students. WI

Schott Report Showcases Growing Achievement Gap The “Black Lives Matter: The Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males” release earlier this year points out a 21-percentage-point difference in national high school graduation rates between black male students and their non-black peers. The report collects national data on four-year graduation rates for black males and compares them with other ethnic groups. Black students in the Washington, D.C. area have a 50-percentage-point-gap in high school graduation rates. The report also showed additional gaps in out-of-school suspensions, Advanced Placement course enrollment and reading and mathematics scores. One way the District is addressing these issues is by partnering with the Urban Prep Academy which has been extremely successful serving boys in Chicago. The all-boys college preparatory academy is set to open in 2016. The District of Columbia Public Schools has also launched a new $20 million initiative centered on mentoring, targeting funding and new partnerships aimed at addressing the needs of black male students. February has been designated Re-Entry Reflection Month in D.C. On Feb. 14, the Court Services and Offender Supervisor Agency co-sponsored the Women’s Re-entry Symposium 2015 which was held at The Temple of Praise in Southeast.

The Symposium addressed the needs of women who re-enter Mona Lisa Gaffney society from short or long stints in prison. “For so long, women / 64 have been ignored in the criminal justice system, so [we] decided to commit some of our resources to them because of their unique needs,” said Nancy Ware. “We will have yearly events that uplift women and unite staff around both their challenges and potential for success.” Women who are often caregivers in their homes face harder challenges when coming home. They face discrimination in securing jobs and housing. Voter ID Laws Challenged by Black Caucus On Feb. 10 members of the Congressional Black Caucus [CBC], the League of Women Voters, the Hispanic Federation and other groups stood on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court urging justices to hear a case filed by the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Advancement Project against what they call Wisconsin’s restrictive voter identification law. “We cannot afford to stand by and do nothing while historical advancements in equality and fairness are reverse with laws such as Wisconsin’s discriminatory voting practice which, if allowed will open the floodgates across the country to silence many American voices by making it increasingly harder for all citizens to vote and have a say in America’s democratic process,” said CBC Chair G.K. Butterfield (D-NC). The Supreme Court upheld the decision that required Wisconsin voters to present a valid photo ID when voting. The law specifically affects Black, Latino and young voters from having a say in local and national elections. WI

Marijuana Legal in D.C. but Future Remains Unclear Initiative 71 went into full effect on Feb. 26 at 12:01am. Mayor Muriel Bowser fought back against Republican Congressmen Jason Chaffetz and Mark Meadows who wrote a letter to Bowser threatening imprisonment if she allowed the initiative to become law. “I’m the duly elected mayor of the District of Columbia. I know that D.C. residents spoke loudly last November,” she asserted. Initiative 71 allows D.C. residents to legally possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana. It also allows residents to grow up to six plants in their homes, but they aren’t allowed to purchase or use marijuana in public. In two years District residents will be able to sell marijuana, according to the U.S. House of Representatives. WI

My Brother’s Keeper Exceeding Goals President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative has raised over $300 million as of March 2015. The initiative kicked off on Feb. 27, 2014 with five District of Columbia Higher Education Readiness Opportunity Scholars who joined the president for the launch. The initiative has money pledged from allies like AT&T and the National Basketball Association. The initiative uses investments from businesses, foundations and community groups to come up with or support programs that help young men of color. According to Administration officials, nearly 200 mayors, tribal leaders and county executives across 43 states and the District are participating in the initiative. “We’ve got to make sure that every American shares in that [economic] growth, not just a few, and that means guaranteeing every child in America has access to a world-class education,” said Obama via a news release. Layoffs Roil Howard University Staff Last year, Howard University announced 2,000 cuts to its staff. This year Howard cut an additional 84 staff positions. In the wake of economic challenges due to the Great Recession, Howard has come under significant financial pressure. Cuts to federal allocation, cuts to Pell Grants and an ever-changing economic landscape has seen Black wealth drop by 30 percent between 2010 and 2013.

Baltimore Erupts in Riots In April, Baltimore erupted in riots following the death of Freddie Gray.

Gray died in police custody setting off another national debate concerning Black men and police brutality. Gray’s death due to a spinal cord injury resulted in the arrest of six Baltimore police officers. William Porter, the first of the six officers to go on trial has been charged with manslaughter, second-degree assault and lesser charges. Porter’s trial recently ended in a deadlock in deliberations between the jury. Most recently the judge declared a mistrial, which has once again sparked outrage among Baltimore residents. Officials say Porter will be retried. WI

Senate Renews Trade Agreement with African Nations The Africa Growth and Opportunity [AGOA] was reauthorized for 10 more years in May. The extension seeks to expand the trade and investment ties between America and countries in sub-Saharan Africa; and lay the groundwork for great regional cooperation on the continent. Originally introduced by President Bill Clinton in 2000, AGOA allows 6,000 products from sub-Saharan Africa to enter the United State duty-free. “AGOA has led to the tripling of non-oil exports to the U.S. It has created a lot of jobs and has led to increased investment to Africa, clearly, we have not gotten to the point yet where Africa has reached its full potential,” said Florie Liser, U.S. Trade Representative for Africa. Maryland Governor Announces He Has Cancer After being on the job as governor for less than six months, Larry Hogan (R) announced he had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer.

Hogan, 59, underwent about 18 weeks of chemotherapy treatment. During that time, Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford (R) handled some of Hogan’s duties such as being chair of the state’s Board of Public Works meeting in Annapolis, touted job creation at the Maryland Municipal League convention in Ocean City and encouraged youth at a kickoff summer program in Baltimore.

Hogan announced last month he was “100 percent cancer free.”

Informer Editor Dies Denise Wall Barnes, editor of The Washington Informer, died June 18 following a lengthy illness.

Barnes, 58, served as the editor for about six years.

She embarked on a more than 20-year career in journalism working at the now-defunct Washington Star, National Public Radio and the Washington Times. Born in Tucson, Arizona, on Dec. 14, 1956 to parents Sadie and Harold, Barnes grew up in the District and was raised by her aunt and uncle, Fannie and Frank Spencer.

Bowser Gets Tough on Drug Sellers D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed a new law targeting businesses who sell synthetic drugs. The law, known as the “Sale of Synthetic Drugs Emergency Amendment Act of 2015,” allows the police department to shut down a first time offender for up to 96 hours with a $10,000 fine. Repeat offenders face store closings for up to 30 days, a $20,000 fine and have the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) to permanently revoke a retailer’s license. In June, 11 people outside of a downtown homeless shelter overdosed on synthetic drugs. WI

Whitney Houston’s Daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, Dies Bobbi Kristina Brown didn’t live long enough to carry on Whitney Houston’s legacy. Brown died July 26 at the age of 22, six months after being found unresponsive in a bathtub at her home near Atlanta. The incident proved eerily similar to that of Houston, who died three years ago after handlers found her unconscious in a bathtub at a Los Angeles area hotel. Brown’s father, R&B singer Bobby Brown, spoke about his daughter’s death for the first time during an episode of “The Real” and said, “She (ex-wife Houston) was not comfortable by herself, I guess and she just called my daughter with her.” Meanwhile, a criminal investigation continues into whether Bobbi Kristina Brown’s former boyfriend, Nick Gordon, had any involvement in her death. Julian Bond Dead at 75 Civil rights icon Julian Bond, who served as immediate past president of the NAACP, a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee [SNCC] and co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, died Aug. 15. He was 75. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, he attended Morehouse College in Atlanta where he later served as SNCC’s communications director from 1961-66. During that time from 1960-63, he led student protests against segregation in public facilities in Georgia. At the age of 25, Bond was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives.

Mayor Pledges Millions in Response to Homicides The District’s homicide rate tallied at 105 during this month equaling the total number from 2014. In response, Bowser laid out plans to spend $15 million in the “Safer, Stronger DC” initiative to handle the increase in homicides. The proposal included more police officers, increased penalties for crimes committed on public transportation and created an incentive program for business and property owners to install security cameras. A series of town hall were held a month later to discuss ways to decrease crime and improve policing. WI

Wizards, Mystics to Get New Home in Southeast Washington Wizards’ guards John Wall and Bradley Beal, Washington Mystics players Natasha Cloud, Stephanie Dolson and Emma Meesseman and city officials came to Southeast to celebrate a $55 million state-of-the-art sports and entertainment arena that will be built on the St. Elizabeths East campus. The Wizards will use it as a practice facility and the Mystics will host games during the summer. Officials said the joint venture between the city, Monumental Sports & Entertainment and Events DC will produce 600 construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs for both the arena and Phase I infrastructure at St. Elizabeths and $90 million in tax revenue. Congressional Black Caucus Returns to District for Annual Conference The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation held its 45th annual Legislative Conference at the Washington Convention Center in Northwest in September with a conversation on criminal justice reform with this year’s theme, “Liberty and Justice for All?” Thousands of Black elected officials, business leaders and advocates attended and spoke on panels such as restoring trust between the police and the community, jobs and economic opportunity for Blacks and a town hall forum. President Barack Obama delivered the keynote address at the Phoenix Awards Dinner. WI

OCTOBER New Tool Helps Black Women Battle Breast Cancer

One-in-eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

And, for African-American women, instances of death are higher with a survival rate that is the least of any racial or ethnic community. While physicians remain adamant about regular exams, a new procedure has been adopted at Howard University Hospital where doctors are now offering the Sure Touch Breast Exam, a pain-free way to perform a clinical breast exam that can also be done in an office setting. “Patients overwhelmingly respond positively to the Sure Touch exam because there is no pain with a soothing technique,” said Dr. Kevin Smith, the division chief of general obstetrics and gynecology, director of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and associate professor at Howard University Hospital. Because many African-American women forgo or avoid testing, they are more likely to be diagnosed in an advanced stage, which results in a mortality rate that is 40 percent higher than white women’s, according to research performed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Million Man March 20th Anniversary The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan called upon one million men to converge on the nation’s capital 20 years ago. On Saturday, Oct. 10, Black men, women and children from across the country returned to the District to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the landmark event, the Million Man March, and to promote swift but lasting change.

Twenty years ago, 2 million answered the call focusing on the theme of atonement, reconciliation and responsibility. One of the national co-coordinators for the day-long celebration, Minister Ishmael Muhammad, said this year’s march will set its sights on the theme of “Justice or Else.” This year an estimated 1 million men, women, and children descended upon the District to take place in the historic march. Farrakhan’s keynote speech focused on preparing the next generation of civil rights activist who will soon carry the torch of freedom into the next fight for racial equality. WI

State regulations will allow for 94 dispensaries, two per state Senate district and 15 facilities to grow cannabis plants and turn them into medical products such as extracts, oils and pills and available by next year.

NOVEMBER Activists Rally Against Mayor’s Anti-Crime Bill

Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Anti-Crime Bill has been denounced by many political leaders in the Black community as racist and unconstitutional. The bill seeks to provide geo-tracking and allows unlimited-warrantless checks on offenders. The Rev. Graylan Hagler, senior pastor of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Northeast, believes that the content of the bill reflects an “erosion of human rights.” Hagler and a growing number of residents, believe the mayor and local officials have an interest in displacing “undesirables” in order to free up more land for major developers who they say tend to target a mostly-white, upwardly mobile constituency. Ward 5 Council member and head of the Judiciary Committee, Kenyan McDuffie, has introduced his own anti-crime bill, which offers a better alternative. It would provide mentors and resources for community policing and preventative work targeting youth who are most likely to commit crimes. WI

College Scholarships Help D.C.’s Most Vulnerable Founded in 2006 College Success Foundation of the District of Columbia provides scholarships for bright low-income students. When they first opened, the non-profit focused on addressing the critically low graduation rates of students in DCPS particularly in Wards 7 and 8. In 2007 in Wards 7 and 8, one-third of ninth graders graduated high school, and only 5 percent of them earned a college degree. Now high graduation rates went from 33 percent to 97 percent and the college graduation rate went from five percent to 43 percent.

They “accomplished this through holistic support including financial, social, and emotional,” said Herb Tillery, executive director of CSF-DC. Between 2008 and 2014, CSF-DC disbursed $32.8 million in scholarships and 6.9 million in 2014 alone. WI

The summer of 2015 saw a large spike in crime in most major American cities. In November, Attorney General Loretta Lynch met with the U.S. Conference of Mayors [USCM] in D.C. They discussed ways to reduce violent crime, strengthen relationships between law enforcement and citizens and create safer communities across the U.S. The primary roles of the USCM are to promote the development of effective national, urban and suburban policy, strengthen federal-city relationships, ensure that federal policy meets urban needs, provide mayors with leadership and management tools and create a forum where mayors can share ideas and information. “In recent months, we’ve been reminded that violence remains a grim reality in far too many neighborhoods,” Lynch said. “We’ve seen the harmful consequences of eroded trust between law enforcement and residents.” Lynch mentioned programs like the National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice and the recommendations of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, that are adopting innovative new approaches to criminal justice and community policing. DECEMBER Body-Worn Camera Program on Fast Track

On Nov. 19 the committee on the Judiciary passed bill 21-0352, the Body-Worn Camera Program Amendment Act of 2015. “Our ultimate goal is to institutionalize the community policing model in our law enforcement agencies in an effort to build trust and accountability,” Chairman of the Judiciary Council member Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5) said.

The proposal prioritizes public access to recordings, requires ongoing analysis and auditing of the program by oversight agencies and researchers and protects the privacy of individuals in their homes. The program will also allow individuals alleging officer misconduct to view the recordings at police stations in which the incident occurred. On Tuesday, Dec. 15, the council approved the bill by an 8-5 vote. By next summer all 2,800 Metropolitan Police Department patrol officers will be required to wear body cameras. Via Twitter Mayor Bowser said, “body-worn camera enhance transparency, increase accountability and strengthen trust between the community and our police force.” WI

A number of District officials agree with allowing Syrian refugees into the District and the country. “I feel strongly that we should be welcoming refugees from all over the world, as is our country’s proud heritage,” said D.C. At-large Councilman David Grosso, an Independent. Recently, the House passed a bill that would suspend the program allowing Syrian and Iraqi refugees into America until key security agencies certify that they don’t pose a security risk. The Congressional Black Caucus [CBC] also weighed in on the situation in support of the bill and allowing refugees to enter the country. “The CBC bolds the safety of our homeland as its number one priority, and we take seriously our humanitarian responsibility to vulnerable populations that are under attack and desperately fleeing severe violence and persecution,” said CBC Chair G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C. The review process for vetting refugees is long and tedious. It requires individuals to be interviewed by a number of U.S. agencies to ensure the applicant is a genuine refugee and is not known to present security threat to the U.S. “I believe that our nation has a moral obligation to help those fleeing oppression and persecution. In fact, it’s a sentiment as old as our country’s founding,” said Ward 6 Democratic Councilman Charles Allen. WI

Metro Fares Will Remain the Same The agency’s proposed fiscal year 2017 budget is $1.7 billion, which is a 3 percent decrease from the current budget. Metro officials look to protect customers and employees, boost ridership and regain trust of the thousands who commute in the District, Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland and Northern Virginia. “My focus is the safety, reliability and fiscal management so [the budget] does that. We are still in the middle of the process, but it’s almost a good time for me to be coming in . . . so I can bring some different thoughts to it,” said Metro’s new general manager and CEO, Paul J. Wiedefeld. Another major focus seeks to improve customer service by having more people ride the train. Metro released a report in October that outlined how ridership on its rail system decreased in the last five years. One idea for attracting new riders is the creation of an unlimited “University Pass” for full-time college students on both buses and trains.

Another proposal would be to not charge riders who enter and exit station a station within a 15-minute period based on congestion, or a late train. WI

Jury Finds Officer Innocent in Tamir Rice Shooting A police officer who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice, a Cleveland youth, last year, will not be indicted, according to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty. The prosecutor said a “perfect storm of human error” led to the death of Rice who was holding a pellet gun when he was shot by police.

Enhanced video shows that it was “indisputable” that Rice was removing the gun from his waistband when he was shot. It is believed that he planned to hand the gun over to officers to show that it was a toy but that officers had no way of knowing that. WI

Movies have become a great comfort in what has been a tumultuous year. They’ve entertained us. Made us laugh and feel courageous, scared and romantic and educated us too. It’s a perfect time to reflect on the films, performances and black artists that made 2015 special. And might as well get a head start on the high-quality movies that will contend for Oscars and be released in theaters and on DVD/VOD in weeks to come.

Amy (HHH1/2) Amy Winehouse burned bright like a firefly and died just about as quickly. Her jazzy, smooth and tortured Billie Holidayish voice haunts the soundtrack. Her infamous drug addiction and self-destructive relationships are on view.

A brilliant and sobering documentary by director Asif Kapadia.

Black Panthers: Vanguard of a Revolution (HHHH)

Whittling down what must have been countless hours of possibilities (archival footage, interviews, photos) into a thought-provoking and coherent documentary about the Black Panthers was done expertly by director/ producer/writer Stanley Nelson and editor Algernon Tunsil.

Few stones are left unturned.

Creed (HHH) Only an ingenious filmmaker (Ryan Coogler) could fathom a continuation of the Rocky saga that is as much of a crowd pleaser as the original. Michael B Jordan steps up as Apollo Creed’s son Adonis, and he takes his punches with grace. Sylvester Stallone digs deep to render his best performance ever as the aged pugilist Rocky Balboa. A knockout.

The Revenant (HHH1/2) After the success of his Oscar-winning film “Birdman,” one might have thought filmmaker Alejandro G. Inarritu’s night miss a beat. He didn’t. His tale of a frontiersman, who survives a brutal bear attack, is left for dead then seeks revenge for his son’s murder, is a violent and riveting experience. Leonardo DeCaprio deserves the Oscar for Best Actor for sheer brilliance and guts.

Room (HHHH) A young woman (Brie Larson) and her vulnerable son (Jacob Tremblay) have been locked up in a shed and held hostage for years. They plot their escape. A deceptively simple script (Emma Donoghu), directed with skill and restraint (Lenny Abrahamson), turns into an astounding and heart-wrenching film that never loses its dramatic edge.

Sicario (HHHH)

FBI Field agents Kate (Emily Blunt) and Reggie (Daniel Kaluuya) seek revenge when a drug cartel kills their colleagues.

They team up with a smarmy Defense Department “contractor” (Josh Brolin) and a mysterious figure (Benicio Del Toro) to hunt the bad guys.

Imagine “Zero Dark Thirty” tequila style. Genius direction (Denis Villeneuve), perfect screenplay (Taylor Sheridan) and superb ensemble acting.

Son of Saul (HHH1/2) First time filmmaker László Nemes has written and directed a devastating Holocaust drama based on an innovative creative strategy: “The camera is his [Saul’s] companion; it stays with him throughout this hell.” The audience witnesses a very personal story about a man determined to give a dead teenager a proper burial at Auschwitz. The claustrophobic cinematography keeps you astonished.

Straight Outta Compton (HHH1/2)

This isn’t some chump change Sundance indie movie about the rap group NWA and hip-hop culture. This is a full-fledged, big-budget looking homage to the L.A. rap scene, that smartly, emotionally and historically capsulizes the life and times of Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and everyone around them who caused the big bang that popularized West Coast rap music. An Oscar-caliber film.

Timbuktu (HHHH)

We read how Islamic fundamentalists are encroaching on the basic liberties of people in Africa and the Arab world. Veteran filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako (Bamako) approaches this complicated social phenomenon by creating a simple allegorical tale about a sheepherder who comes under the wrath of an Islamic tribunal and the results are deadly. The film is as spiritual as a biblical passage.

Wild Tales (HHHH)

If a past transgression has been eating your soul alive, these twisted vignettes could be your remedy.

Tales of revenge, miscalculations, deceit, unbridled anger and jealousy beyond anything you can fathom are doled out with a wicked sense of humor by director Argentinean writer/ director Damian Szifron. Macabre and hysterical.

He along with his younger brother and cast mate Chance received a spin off due to their popularity entitled “Real Chance at Love.” Real would go on to do several more reality television appearances before being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2013. Real died on Feb. 21 Allen Toussaint was a musician, songwriter, arranger, and

record producer. An influential figure in New Orleans R&B, many musicians recorded his compositions. He was 77.

Alton ‘Ben’ Powers was best known for his role on the hit

70s television show “Good Times” as Thelma’s footballer husband Keith Anderson. On April 6 he died at the age of 64 at his home in Massachusetts.

Anthony Riley, a contestant on season eight of “The Voice,” committed suicide at the age of 28.

Charmayne Maxwell was a member of the ‘90s girl group Brownstone. Her group was signed to Michael Jackson’s MJJ Music label. Best known for their 1994 single “If You Love Me,” she was 46.

C.L. Long, pastor of the Scripture Cathedral Church for more

than 50 years, died at the age of 74. Known as “the radio pastor” he was a dominant voice on radio and television for almost 40 years.

Clark Terry was a jazz musician, educator and star on “Keep on Keepin’ on.” He was the first ever Black house musician with the Tonight Show Band. Terry died at the age of 94.

Cynthia Robinson, co-founder of Sly and the Family Stone, died after battling cancer. Robinson was a lifelong musician. She died at the age of 71.

Darryl Dawkins was an NBA legend most remembered for Augustus Alexander Savage “Gus Savage” served

the second Congressional District of Illinois, representing Chicago’s South Side for six terms from January 1981 to January 1993. Savage founded the Citizen newspapers, which was touted as the largest Black-owned weekly newspaper chain in the Midwest during the 70’s. In 1980 he launched his political career and was often criticized for so-called racist remarks and anti-Semitic views. He was 90.

B.B. King the legendary blues singer, songwriter, music, record producer and actor, died of natural causes. He was 89.

Ben E. King is best known for his hit song “Stand By Me.” He was a soul, R&B singer and record producer. He was also a member of the Drifters in the 50s and 60s. He died at the age of 76.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of the late Whitney Houston and Bobbi Brown, died at the age of 22. She died six months after being found unconscious in her bathtub.

police custody on April 19. Shortly after a video was released of Gray’s arrest, days of civil unrest in Baltimore occurred turning a spotlight on police brutality in the U.S. All six officers involved were indicted for Gray’s spinal injury which led to his death while in their custody.

George Haley was a chairman of the Postal Rate Commis-

sion under President George H.W. Bush and U.S. ambassador to Gambia from 1998 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton. He was a lawyer and served as a senator in the state senate of Kansas. His brother is the prolific writer Alex Haley. George was 89.

Julian Bond was a social activist, politician, professor, writer

and leading figure in the Civil Rights Movement. A graduate of Morehouse College, Bond was the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center. He was 75.

Kyle Jean-Baptiste was a Broadway actor who became the

first Black and youngest actor to play Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables.” He was 21.

Marcus Belgrave was a jazz trumpet player who recorded with musicians such as The Temptations, The Four Tops and Dizzy Gillespie. He died of heart failure at the age of 78.

Marque Lynche the former “All New Mickey Mouse Clubstar” was found dead at the age of 34 in his New York apartment.

He also appeared as a Musketeer from 1993 to 1995 and made it to the semi-finals of “American Idol’s” third season.

Marvin F. Wilson, a former Prince George’s county coun-

cilman and native of southeast D.C. died at the age of 81. He served his community for more than 40 years in many capacities including mayor of Glenarden, Maryland.

Meadow George Lemon III affectionately known as “Meadowlark,” gained popularity as the “clown prince” as a member of the Harlem Globetrotters Basketball team. In 2003 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Later on in life he became a minister and served in that position until his death on Dec. 27 at the age of 83.

Moses Malone was an NBA Hall of Famer who went pro

directly out of high school in 1974. Malone played for the ABA as well as the NBA. He was 60.

Percy Sledge, the R&B singer best known for his 1996 hit

song “When a Man Loves a Woman,” died in his Baton Rouge, Louisiana home after a battle with cancer. He was 73.

Randolph ‘Ornette’ Coleman an innovator of the free jazz movement in

the 60s was a world renowned musician and composer. In 1994, he received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship Award and in 2007 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music for his album “Sound Grammar.” Coleman died from cardiac arrest on June 11 at the age of 85 in New York City.

Reynaldo Rey died at the age of 75. He was an actor, comedian and TV personality. He is best known for his acting in “Friday” and “White Men Can’t Jump.”

Sam Eastman was the press secretary for the District’s first elected mayor, Walter Washington. He started his career in Washington as a copy boy for the Washington Star in 1946 before reporting on Capitol Hill and covering D.C. politics. Eastman worked with Washington from 1967 until Marion Berry took over the seat in 1968. He served the District government until his retirement in 1998. He was 89.

Sandra Bland beckoned the nation’s attention when she was found dead in her jail cell at the age of 28 on July 13. Dash cam video released posthumously showed Bland and a Waller County Texas Police Officer engaging in a conversation before she was met with physical force. Many on social media and beyond believe the ruling that Bland committed suicide was suspicious which garnered national interest.

Stuart Scott, a sportscaster and trailblazing ESPN anchor,

gained fame in the 90s with his knowledge of professional sports, unique commentary and witty catchphrases such as “boo-yah” and “holla at a playa when you see him in the street!” Before becoming a household name, Scott attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill where he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. In 2007, his battle with cancer began. After several years of fighting and remission, Scott lost his fight on Jan. 4 at the age of 49.

William Guest is best known as an original member of the R&B singing group Gladys Knight & the Pips. He died on Dec. 24 in Detroit at the age of 74.

Minnie Minoso was a Cuban-born MBL legend. He was the first Black player of the Chicago White Sox. Minoso also won the Gold Glove award in three different seasons. He was 83.

Plaintiff Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. filed a Complaint alleging among other things, that a deed recorded as Document Number 2002058312 transferring the property known as 5451 B Street SE, Washington, DC 20019 to the Defendant Martha Green was signed improperly by Mary B. Staunton as an individual instead of Mary B. Staunton in her capacity as trustee of the Defendant Mary B. Staunton Living Trust and therefore Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.’s recorded deed of trust granted by Martha Green may be ineffective. Plaintiff has shown that Mary B. Staunton is deceased and therefore personal service is not possible.

WHEREFORE, it is this 23rd day of November 2015, hereby, ORDERED, that notice shall be given by insertion of a copy of this order in the Daily Washington Law Reporter, a legal newspaper or periodical of daily circulation and The Washington Informer, a newspaper or periodical specifically designated by the Court once a week for three successive weeks.
